Mulheres e islamismo: os casos do Egito e da Turquia / Women and Islamism: the cases of Egypt and Turkey

Valdecila Cruz Lima 20 March 2012 (has links)
This research inserts in the field of the studies about the Muslim world, having as object the Muslim women and its presence in Islamist movements, understood here as fundamentalist movements whose political ideology is centered defense of the traditions of Islam and in the criticism of West. The main objective is to investigate to what extent these movements may be contributing to (or blocking) a possible emancipation of Muslim women, this emancipation defined by criteria such as autonomy in social and political participation and presence in public spaces. In this sense, the research is proposed from the perspective of social history, making a comparison between Egypt and Turkey, after 80, and is structured around three main issues: a) Islam and its impact on social and politics life of women; b) the presence of women in Islamist movements c) modernity in Islam: Women and Islamism. Working with the notions of Islam, fundamentalism, identity, gender, feminism, modernity and other the research to turn to relations between women and Islamism, also hopes to contribute to the study of the modernization of Muslim societies.

This thesis aims to analyze the discourse of the main new atheists authors, from a viewpoint that considers new atheism as a current movement that, unlike traditional atheism, has an agenda that is not only philosophical but also decidedly political and cultural. It emerges as a reaction to the terrorist attacks to the World Trade Center in 2001, and particularly in response to the resurgence and increasing cultural and political influence of Christian Neo-fundamentalism in the United States starting in the 1970’s. In the perception of new atheists, religion is becoming a politically organized force on the rise both within and outside the US, and that the evaluation of these actors can be defined as dangerous, destructive and irrational, given the actions of the US religious right, the actions of radical extremists Islamic, and finally, the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. The authors analyzed here understand the new atheist posture as critical and refreshing. In our assessment, however, this stance despite being different from traditional atheism is what we understand to be a "Neo-secularist-fundamentalisms" whose promoters also convey effectively radical ideas in the current North American political-cultural context characterized, as noted by James Hunter, by a real culture war.

This dissertation analyses the phenomenon of the fundamentalism present in the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. Because of the powerful influence of the North American missionaries in the conformation of the Brazilian Protestant Churches, it was verified that these churches were afected by the worldview and the theological conceptions proper to the North American protestant fundamentalism. The isolation of the Brazilian Churches from the Protestant European community, on one hand, and the absence of an enduring dialogue with the kernels of theological reflexion of the North American Churches, on the other hand, consequence of an administrative independence with a nationalist/chauvinist character, therefore badly driven, crystalized into a strict and closed hermeneutics on these Churches. The Presbyterian Church of Brazil is a particular kind of Protestantism which adopted these ideas in such a remarkable manner that they survive at the present time, which can be confirmed by the interviews performed with distinguished personalities from the heart of this institution.

Le Coetus internationalis Patrum, un groupe d'opposants au sein du Concile Vatican II / The Coetus Internationalis Patrum, a group of opponents to the Second Vatican Council

Roy, Philippe 03 November 2011 (has links)
The Coetus Internationalis Patrum (CIP) constituted the most important group of council minority representatives during the Second Vatican Council. In a preliminary chapter, this dissertation sets out with a brief presentation of all the group’s members. Consequently, a first and vast section of our thesis is devoted to a sketch of the more remote origins – i.e. its prehistory – of the CIP. These origins lie both in the counter-revolutionary and anti-liberal Roman education of its members, and in their belonging to catholic intransigent networks on an international level – which we aim to identify and present in detail. This section ends with a study of the positions taken by the main CIP-protagonists on the eve of Vatican II, through an analysis of their preconciliar vota. A following section is devoted to the CIP as such. We will study its establishment, its organization and strategies throughout the subsequent conciliar periods and intersessions. A second part retraces the early formation of a « Study Group » or a « piccolo comitato » during the first council period ; a third part focuses upon the ‘officious’ birth of the CIP and the battles it waged during the first intersession and the second council period ; the fourth part then illustrates the group’s official establishment and its engagement in the council debates of the second intersession and the third period ; finally, the fifth and sixth parts offer a survey of the final battles fought by the Coetus, during the third intersession and the council’s closing period. Our overall study of the CIP-activities during the council combines a chronological study of the events with ample attention to the presentation of the opinions, the positions taken and the battles fought by its members and sympathizers regarding the conciliar drafts (schema’s) discussed by the assembly. It aims at highlighting the impact of the CIP on the evolution of the council documents. Our study closes with an evaluation of the organization, the activities and the strategies of the group, its impact on the council texts, and of the appreciation and reception of the Council by its core members, thus imbedding the story of the Coetus Internationalis Patrum within the larger history of intransigent Catholicism. Finally, we present the limits of our work and outline paths for future research.

Jihad: liberation or terrorism? the thought of sayyid qutb

Mezzi, Mohamed January 2008 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Includes bibliographic references (leaves 184-195)"In this thesis, I contrast Qutbs approach towards jihad with that which is found in the primary sources of Islam and as espoused by the proponents of the four schools of thought, as well as key Islamic scholars. This study also attempts to explore the conceptual confusion between terrorism, jihad, and legitimate defense and resistance by comparing the legislation on jihad in Islam with that which exists in international law and conventions. I then turn my attention to the focal point of this study, the writings of Sayyid Qutb on jihad..."

Paradoxically, in spite of all scientific and technological advancement that is observed in these recent last years, which have given beginning to the twenty first century, Fundamentalism has grown up in all so-called Book Religions: Judaism, Christianism and Islamism. And this is not true only in the religious circles, but also in other society sectors, including the political ones. Regarding to the Biblical Fundamentalism, present in protestant communities, we can observe positive and negative aspects which will be properly analyzed throughout this work. In this perspective, we have tried researching the Fundamentalism´s assumptions, development and dissemination, since its origin within American Protestantism in the late ninetieth century in order to understand its socioreligious implications for the present days. The applied methodology consists of studies and researches, departing from specialized bibliography, based on the academic environment in History, Sociology, Anthropology, Theology, Exegesis and Biblical Hermeneutics area, departathing from protestant and catholic authors who transit thoughout the Sciences concerning Religion epistemological field. Departing from pertinent informations regarding to the present time, we acknowledge that the Biblical Fundamentalism has grown and impacted, day after day, in the ecclesiastical environment which is evident in its praxis in Brazil and in the world. We may conclude that this studies subject reflectes in the relationships concerning family, the communities and society, amid the challenges regarding to the modernity in crises.

From Confederate Deserter to Decorated Veteran Bible Scholar: Exploring the Enigmatic Life of C.I. Scofield 1861-1921.

Rushing, D. Jean 17 December 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Cyrus Ingerson Scofield portrayed himself as a decorated Confederate veteran, a successful lawyer, and a Bible scholar who was providentially destined to edit his 1909 dispensational opus, The Scofield Reference Bible. This thesis offers a multilayered image of Dr. Scofield's life by considering political and regional influences, racial and gender attitudes, and religious views he encountered between 1861 and 1921. This study includes an examination of his participation in the American Civil War including his desertion of the South in 1862. After becoming a Union loyalist, Scofield excelled as a lawyer and Republican politician before corruption rumors radically altered his life in 1874. By 1882, he emerged as a minister in Dallas, Texas where he built an image as a Confederate veteran and Bible scholar. Drawing on Scofield's manuscripts and other sources, this study shows the self-aggrandizing Bible editor consistently adapted his life and rhetoric to his regional and social circumstances.

Christian Fundamentalism, Authoritarianism, and Attitudes toward Rape Victims.

Carr, Christie Arine 06 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study focused on the relationship of five variables: rape myth acceptance, attitudes toward rape victims, sex roles, authoritarianism, and Christian fundamentalism. Also, differences between men and women were compared. The study was conducted at East Tennessee State University, and 100 people participated. Contrary to past research, Christian fundamentalism was not a significant predictor of rape myth acceptance or attitudes towards rape victims, but there were significant relationships between all of the other variables. Men were found to be more accepting of rape myths and had a more negative view of rape victims than did women. Implications of these findings, future research ideas, and possible rape-awareness educational programs are discussed.

Religion, intolerance, and social identity

Walters, Handri 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Political Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Over the past few decades the secular world has witnessed an increasing assault, specifically from the monotheistic religious fundamentalist community, on their beliefs and values. The undeniable intolerance shown by the religious fundamentalist community has often translated into violent terrorist attacks against the secular world. The fact that religious beings can resort to such atrocious acts of violence has certainly baffled many onlookers. It surely comes as no surprise that religious fundamentalism is generally viewed as a ''hard-to-understand‟ phenomenon. This literature review will describe the ''hard-to-understand‟ phenomenon that is religious fundamentalism by employing social identity theory. The social identity of religious fundamentalists is generally derived from sacred texts and what they consider to be absolute truths. These presumed absolute truths not only provide ample opportunity for the development of the ''us‟/''them‟ duality, but also provide a platform for an intense intolerance of the ''other‟, also referred to as the out-group. Of course, the ''us‟/''them‟ duality can be created on many social dimensions, but religion has proven to bring quite an extensive, even murderous, intolerance to in- and out-group characterizations. The ever increasing actions of religious fundamentalist groups over the past few decades have certainly illustrated this point with some conviction. The importance of social identity has been recognised in many major traditions of the social sciences, not excluding political science. Social identity forms the basis of any group‟s actions or reactions. Therefore, its significance stretches far beyond simply providing an identity to a social group. Social identity also acts as a preamble to how a social group, in this case religious fundamentalists, chooses to deal with invidious comparisons. By employing social identity in this particular way we can go beyond investigating how religious fundamentalists act and react to the point of understanding why they act and react the way they do. In this study it was found that although a number of options to deal with invidious comparisons are available to social groups, only a few of these options are likely to be pursued by religious fundamentalists in order to remain a relevant and competitive social group within the social hierarchy. This approach will provide important insights into a formerly ''hard-to-understand‟ phenomenon namely religious fundamentalism.
