Cette thèse porte sur les pratiques funéraires royales et privées dans le royaume de Napata, entre les VIIIe et IIIe siècles av. J.-C. Elle constitue une synthèse de l'ensemble des connaissances ayant trait aux structures funéraires ainsi qu'aux rituels qui avaient lieu lors de l'enterrement du défunt ou après. Commençant par l'architecture funéraire, elle présente les traces des cultures locales et celles de la tradition égyptienne de manière à faire ressortir le fait que les éléments indigènes sont plus enracinés chez les communautés les plus isolées et probablement non sédentaires, alors que les tombes royales, d'inspiration pharaonique, témoignent d'une appropriation d'éléments décoratifs et de textes largement utilisés dans les nécropoles élitaires de Thèbes Ouest. Ensuite , cette thèse classifie les objets du mobilier funéraire afin de fournir la base d'un régionalisme culturel par le biais des emprunts des deux traditions. Dans la dernière partie, elle dresse une étude des coutumes funéraires napatéennes, en traçant un essai de hiérarchisation des sépultures selon leur contenu et le type de tombe, pour aborder finalement les rites funéraires et le phénomène de l' "acculturation" analysé dans ses différents aspects à travers les composantes funéraires étudiées précédemment. / This PhD thesis deals with the royal and non royal funerary practices in the Napatan Kingdom between VIIIe and IIIrd century BCE. It consists of an overview on the funerary architecture and of the rituals performed along or after the funeral. Starting from the funerary architecture, it presents the cultural traces coming from local cultures and those of the Egyptian tradition, suggesting that the indigenous elements are more rooted among the isolated groups perhaps non sedentary, while royal tombs, under the pharaonic inspiration, testify the adoption of decorative elements and texts widely used in the elitist necropolises in Western Thebes. Then, this research classifies the objects coming from the funerary equipment such to offer the outlines of a cultural regionalism by the loans of both the two cultures. In the final part, an investigation on the funerary customs of Napatan Period has been made, offering an attempt of a hierarchical organization of the burials on the basis of the contents and of the type of the tomb, to finally discuss the funerary rituals and the phenomenon of "acculturation" analyzed within different aspects by the funeray components discussed before.

Necrogeography matters : the powers of governing Indian and Chinese dead and their bodily remains in Great Britain, 1812-2012Jassal, Lakhbir Kaur January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the historical and contemporary cultural politics of funeral and body disposal among Indian and Chinese residents of Great Britain. The sanitation episteme launched in Britain during the eighteenth-century resulted in new systems for governing things deemed to be polluting or a threat to human health. This included the corpse/dead body and its bodily remains governed by an all-embracing state technique that I call ‘necropower’. Inspired by a Foucauldian approach to biopower, I examine how the governing of the dead is implicated in the formation of state power over non-Abrahamic ethnic groups. More specifically, in this thesis I analyze how the funeral and disposal practices of two ethnic minorities in the UK have been and are governed by the contours of state necropower. I argue that these bodies became the quintessential matter out of place in a state-regulated episteme. Beginning with funerary practices they have historically been deemed polluted and subject to state-based sanitary order, and they have emerged today through a new environmental and sanitary episteme inside a necroregime of power that is mediated by industry professionals. Drawing upon documented historical and contemporary material from the nineteenth to twenty-first century, interviews with state officials, professionals from the Death Care Industry, and Indian and Chinese minorities in Great Britain, I elaborate the various ways that these minorities seek to respond to, negotiate, and avoid expectations and regulations with respect to body and remain disposal.

Ethnoarchaeological perspectives on the mortuary practices of Jordanian BedouinWhiteway, Autumn 13 October 2016 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to enhance the archaeological visibility of mobile pastoralists in the southern Levant, accomplished through an ethnoarchaeological study of Bedouin mortuary practices in Jordan. Qualitative data, collected via 136 ethnographic interviews, and quantitative data, collected from 20 Bedouin cemeteries, are analyzed to distinguish the material residues of Bedouin funerary practices. Patterns in these data are investigated using a multi-scalar spatial model, to improve archaeological interpretations and produce a predictive model for locating the material signatures of mobile pastoralist mortuary practices in the southern Levant. This research yields results of high archaeological visibility, demonstrating that Bedouin mortuary practices leave behind a detectable material signature on the landscape. / February 2017

"When God Takes Away": Gendered Death Customs in Eighteenth-Century VirginiaTremper, Kristin 05 May 2010 (has links)
Rituals surrounding death were social in addition to being religious. Virginians conveyed the status of the deceased through funerals, burials, gravestones, commemoration, and mourning. But these customs greatly differed according to gender, both in what they consisted of and who was responsible for carrying them out. This thesis examines wills, diaries, correspondence, grave markers, prints, and newspapers of eighteenth-century Virginians, which demonstrate the differences in the death customs of men and women. Because of men’s involvement in public activities like business and politics, they gave greater forethought into how acts of remembrance would reflect their positions. Women’s duties were centered on the home and family. This resulted in less elaborate death customs as well as greater responsibility for appropriately attending to the remembrance of others. Despite the overwhelmingly private nature of women’s funerals and burials, gravestones, death notices, and the responsibilities of widowhood briefly brought women into the public realm.

Les rites funéraires pratiqués dans le royaume téménide et ses environs au cours de la période archaïque témoignent de l’usage de pratiques standardisées en lien avec de fortes croyances locales. Les nécropoles pouvaient regrouper un grand nombre de tombes dont le mobilier, souvent riche, était composé de différentes catégories d’objets tels que des vases, des pièces d’armement, des parures, et des miniatures. Des ornements en feuille d’or couvraient les vêtements des défunts et pouvaient orner certains objets. Dans le cas des tombes les plus riches, des masques en or étaient présents. En analysant les informations publiées, nous pouvons mettre en évidence des assemblages d’objets, des thèmes récurrents ainsi que des caractéristiques communes à l’ensemble des nécropoles étudiées tout en soulignant les particularités de chaque site. / The funerary practices used in the Temenid kingdom during the archaic period testify of the use of standardized practices linked to strong local beliefs in the afterlife. In some cases, cemeteries could be particularly vast, and display a variety of funerary artefacts, often richly ornated, like vases, weaponry, jewellery and miniature objects. The wealthiest tombs could also contain funerary masks. If we analyze the data that has been published, it is possible to determine patterns in the selection of objects, recurrent iconographical themes as well as common features linking together these different cemeteries. It is also possible to determine local characteristics present in each site.

Inca Funerary Practices at Sacsayhuamán: Ceremonial Burial and Funerary ComplexExcavations in the Inca site of Sacsayhuaman, Cuzco, show at least two kinds of Inca burial practices. Archaeological studies conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Cultura (INC) in 1999 in the Suchuna sector revealed a specific cemetery area. This complex of about 80 graves was designated for the disposal of the ordinary people. More recently, in 2001 the Instituto Nacional de Cultura has conducted excavations in the Muycmarca sector. Fifteen funerary contexts were found, which were associated with architectural structures and offerings. It seems that the practices associated with burials at Muyucmarca were of a ritual character. This paper presents the comparative analysis between the Suchuna and the Muyucmarca burials with the goal of advancing our understanding of various distinctive Incaic funerary practices and burial patterns. / Excavaciones recientes realizadas en el complejo de Sacsayhuamán, Cuzco, evidencian la existencia de, por lo menos, dos tipos de prácticas funerarias incaicas. Los trabajos de investigación realizados en 1999 en el sector de Suchuna, subsector Cementerio, a cargo del Instituto Nacional de Cultura (INC), permitieron delimitar un área que tenía el uso específico de complejo funerario y que fue destinada al enterramiento masivo de la población común. Además, excavaciones realizadas durante 2001 en el sector de Muyucmarca sacaron a la luz 15 contextos funerarios, así como restos de numerosas ofrendas. En este último caso se trata de entierros asociados a estructuras arquitectónicas y eventos ceremoniales. En el presente artículo se hace un análisis comparativo entre los hallazgos de Suchuna y Muyucmarca con el objetivo de avanzar en el entendimiento de los distintos patrones funerarios incaicos.

Previous issue date: 2011-03-25 / Esta pesquisa objetivou estudar as práticas funerárias realizadas nos nove enterramentos evidenciados no sítio Toca da Baixa dos Caboclos/PI. Fundamentada em uma perspectiva conservadora, este estudo defendeu a hipótese de que a manutenção do sítio como espaço funerário poderia apontar a manutenção das próprias práticas funerárias dispensadas aos enterramentos nele evidenciados. Buscando validar esta hipótese, este trabalho se utilizou de uma metodologia ordenada e sistemática que permitiu reconstituir o Perfil Funerário do Sítio Toca da Baixa dos Caboclos, a partir da reconstituição dos seus respectivos Perfis das Unidades Funerárias. Segundo esta metodologia foi possível tecer considerações sobre as práticas funerárias dispensadas particularmente a cada enterramento e, ao mesmo tempo, entre todos os enterramentos estudados. Concomitantemente, o estudo da distribuição crono-espacial dos enterramentos possibilitou inferências acerca do aproveitamento do espaço interno do sítio, em distintos momentos cronológicos. Como resultado, foram identificadas recorrências relacionadas às práticas funerárias e também ao próprio agenciamento do espaço funerário. / This research aimed to study the funerary practices realized in nine burials evidenced in the archaeological site Toca da Baixa dos Caboclos/PI. Based on a conservative perspective, this study supported the hypothesis that maintaining the site as a burial space could point to maintenance of their own funerary practices. Seeking to validate this hypothesis, this study used a methodology systematic and ordered to reconstruct the Funerary Profile of site Toca da Baixa dos Caboclos, from the reconstitution of their respective Profiles of Funerary Units. According to this approach it was possible to comment on the funerary practices dispensed to every burial and at the same time, among all burials studied. At the same time, the study of chrono-spatial distribution of burials allowed inferences about the use of internal space of the site at different moments chronological. As a result, recurrences identified were related to funerarypractices and also in their own funerary use of internal space of the archeological site.

Au cours des dernières décennies, la multiplication des fouilles d’ensembles funéraires a entraîné un renouvellement des connaissances sur les pratiques funéraires médiévales et elle a permis de réaliser des synthèses sur le sujet à l’échelle locale ou régionale. Dans l’espace méditerranéen nord-occidental, un territoire n’avait encore jamais fait l’objet d’une telle étude : la Corse. Cette recherche se propose de pallier ce constat par une analyse archéo-anthropologique du matériel issu des fouilles récentes de trois cimetières, à l’époque associés à des sièges épiscopaux : Ajaccio, Mariana et Sagone. Ces ensembles funéraires se caractérisent par une longue durée d’utilisation et une diversité des types de sépultures. L’objectif principal étant, à travers l’analyse des pratiques funéraires, d’approcher la composante culturelle des populations, les permanences et les évolutions au cours du temps. Il s’agit ainsi de mettre en évidence les spécificités relatives à chaque période et à chaque site et de les replacer dans le contexte plus général du bassin méditerranéen nord-occidental, afin d’en souligner d’éventuelles influences culturelles ou la formation de traditions locales. Cette première échelle d’analyse est couplée à une étude biologique des populations inhumées dans le but de caractériser le recrutement funéraire des cimetières, la reconnaissance de groupes familiaux ou sociaux ainsi que l’état sanitaire des populations. L’ensemble de ces éléments est dans un troisième temps replacé à l’échelle de l’espace funéraire, de manière à caractériser son organisation et sa place dans le paysage. / For several decades, the multiplication of the excavations of burial sets led to a renewal of knowledge on medieval funerary practices and allowed to operate syntheses on the subject at the local or regional level. In the North-Western Mediterranean area, a territory had never yet been the subject of a study on the topic: Corsica. This research proposes to overcome this observation by an archaeo-anthropological analysis of the archaeological material from recent excavations of three cemeteries associated with episcopal seats: Ajaccio, Sagone and Mariana. These cemeteries are characterised by a long period of use and a diversity of burials’ types. The main objective is, through the analysis of burial practices, to approach the cultural component, its permanencies and its evolutions over time. It is as well to highlight the specificities relating to each period at each site and to replace them in the larger context of North-Western Mediterranean basin, in order to underline any cultural influences or the formation of local traditions. This first level of analysis is coupled with a biological study of populations who were buried in order to characterize the funeral recruitment of the cemeteries, the recognition of the family or the social groups as well as the health status of the populations. All of these elements is, in a third step, replaced at the scale of the funerary space, so as to characterize its organization and its place in the landscape.

By the Head of a Spirited Horse: A Biocultural Analysis of Horse-Depositions as Reflections of Horseman Identities in Early Britain (Iron Age to Early Medieval Period)Cross, Pamela J. January 2018 (has links)
Horse-depositions were examined to explore the development of human-horse relationships in early Britain using a multidisciplinary approach (osteological,
archaeological, historical and ethnographical) to interpret these relationships as part
of Horseman identities in the Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods. Medieval
Horseman-burials are an established phenomenon and considered an Anglo-Saxon import in Britain which expressed a general elite-warrior male status. However, Horseman-burials form an exclusive minority which suggest not a general warrior elite but specific subgroups and/or traditions potentially rooted in earlier practices.
Husbandry, transportation-use and ritual practices were also investigated. Horses and horse-use were evaluated via stature and correlations with sex. The results
indicated sexual dimorphism should be considered when interpreting horse stature.
It is hypothesised that generally females were pastured breeding-stock while males
were transportation-stock which received supplemental nutrition and care. Males
were/are generally larger than females, and size disparity was probably heightened by such gendered horse-use practices. Overall, it appears females were 1.3m or
less, and horses over 1.3m were males. Horse-depositional patterns in human,
particularly funerary, spaces were analysed. Horse deposition often had ritual
components and practices changed over time reflecting changing Horseman
identities, particularly during the Roman period. Roman-British interactions, the
destruction of native-elite chariot-warfare identities and the development of native-auxiliary groups refocused Horseman identities on mounted-warfare. This change
from driver to rider, a more intimate relationship, appears reflected by the
development of human-horse burials and Horseman identities linked to auxiliary-native cultural groups which incorporated Roman equites ideals with native-auxiliary

Étude de l’orientation cardinale sud dans les sépultures mayas de la Période ClassiqueLessard, Sandrine 12 1900 (has links)
Ce mémoire porte sur l’étude de l’orientation des sépultures mayas de la Période Classique (250 - 900/1000 de notre ère). Il s’agit d’une recherche visant à comprendre le choix d’une orientation sud des défunts dans la vallée du Belize et ses environs. L’intérêt porté à cette région vient du fait que l’orientation sud des défunts est un phénomène que l’on retrouve rarement sur le territoire maya, sauf à cet endroit. Alors que la présence de la cardinalité en lien avec la cosmovision maya est attestée dans l’architecture, le plan des sites, la forme et la fonction des divinités, dans l’agriculture, etc., il est plutôt rare qu’elle soit analysée dans les études du traitement funéraire. Ainsi, le but de cette recherche est de saisir l’ampleur de la pratique de l’orientation sud des défunts sur le territoire maya, de comprendre son origine et sa ou ses possible(s) signification(s). Les données des sépultures de la Période Classique de cinq sites de la vallée du Belize (Baking Pot, Barton Ramie, Blackman Eddy, Cahal Pech et Xunantunich), de quatre sites du Plateau Vaca (Minanha, Pacbitun, Mountain Cow et Caracol) et de trois sites situés à l’ouest (Holmul) et au nord (San José et Altun Ha) de ces deux régions sont compilées. Les résultats révèlent que le coeur de cette pratique se trouve dans la vallée du Belize, bien qu’une orientation sud des défunts ait été retrouvée partout. Cette pratique semble apparaitre à la fin de la Période Préclassique et les analyses ne révèlent pas de lien entre l’orientation sud et certaines variables (âge, sexe, position du défunt). Finalement, on arrive à la conclusion qu’il est possible que cette orientation sud des défunts soit en lien avec le passage des défunts dans l’inframonde et que cela forme un choix culturel local en lien avec le statut et l’identité du défunt. / This thesis focuses on the study of the orientation of Classic Maya burials (AD 250 - 900/1000). The research is directed towards the understanding of the presence of the south orientation of burials in the Belize Valley and its surroundings. While the presence of the cardinality of the Mayan worldview is established as reflected in the architecture, settlement patterns, form and function of divine agents, agriculture, etc., it is rarely analyzed in funerary treatment studies. Thus, the aim of this research is to understand the extent of the practice of the south orientation of the deceased on the Mayan territory, to understand its origin, and its possible signification(s). Data from the Classic burials of five Belize Valley sites (Baking Pot, Barton Ramie, Blackman Eddy, Cahal Pech, and Xunantunich), four Vaca Plateau sites (Minanha, Pacbitun, Mountain Cow, and Caracol), and three sites located west (Holmul) and north (San José and Altun Ha) of the two previous regions have been compiled. The results reveal that the heart of this practice lies in the Belize Valley, although a south orientation of the deceased was found everywhere. This practice seems to appear at the end of the Preclassic Period and analysis revealed no link between south orientation and certain variables (age, sex, position of the deceased). Finally, it was found that it is possible that south orientation of the deceased is connected with the passage of the deceased in the underworld, and that it is a local choice in connection with the status and the identity of the deceased.
