Alytaus miesto kapinės XX a. II p. - XXI a. pr / Cemetery of Alytus in the end of XX beginning of XXI centuries

Čiginskaitė, Donata 24 September 2008 (has links)
Pasirinktas darbo objektas – Alytaus miesto kapinės XX a. II p. - XXI a. pr. Be to, apie pačias kapines, kapinių elementų bruožus nėra niekas tyrinėjęs, skelbęs publikacijų. Tai ir suponuoja šios temos naujumą ir... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Cemetery – it is a place were you can think about the purpose and aim of your life, as well as concentrate on your spirit and mind. Since the old days cemetery is not just reflection of life eternity , culture, tradition and self conscious to every men and nation, but also a witness of today and past. Cemetery object attracts quite a few kind of scientists like historians and ethnographs, who can see this object from a different point of views. I will be looking at the research object – cemetery, as historical and cultural formation. The object of this research is cemetery of Alytus in the end of XX beginning of XXI centuries. I will be looking just at one part of it which is situated on the left bank of river Nemunas, its Sv. Angelu church and Daugu street cemetery. The reason for that is not just because the history of these two objects are closely related, but also the history of Sv. Angelu church is one of he oldest in Alytus. Another reason – historical heritage that these two places has. The citizens were buried in Daugu street cemetery after the cemetery in Sv. Angelu church cemetery were closed. So as you can see, both cemetery are important part of town and history. A lot of generations who had their own lives and destiny are resting in peace in this soil. It is very important to reveal the history of these cemetery, because there are just few general written studies on these objects. This work is modern and important, because I will try to look further in the... [to full text]

"To Bear All That Comes Upon Us": Resurrecting the Aurora Colony Narrative Through Mortuary Analysis

Kerr, Noah 29 September 2014 (has links)
The gravemarkers of the Aurora Colony Cemetery offer a means of examining identity and change within this early Oregon utopian community. Led by charismatic Wilhelm Keil and composed predominantly of people of German heritage, the members of the Aurora Colony sought to distance themselves from worldly influences through emigration to the Willamette Valley. In existence from 1856 to 1883, they sought to maintain shared cultural practices while, as farmers and artisans, relying simultaneously upon inclusive commerce with the outside world. Contextual analysis of this mortuaryscape provides a venue for understanding the interplay of separatist ideology and extralocal forces among Colony members and the following generation of their descendants. Artifactual data from relationships found among their mortuary objects reflects patterns of change in material, typology, composition, and language spanning the years 1862-1920. Subsequently, such objects express the tide of acculturation and dissolution experienced within the Colony.

"When God Takes Away": Gendered Death Customs in Eighteenth-Century Virginia

Tremper, Kristin 05 May 2010 (has links)
Rituals surrounding death were social in addition to being religious. Virginians conveyed the status of the deceased through funerals, burials, gravestones, commemoration, and mourning. But these customs greatly differed according to gender, both in what they consisted of and who was responsible for carrying them out. This thesis examines wills, diaries, correspondence, grave markers, prints, and newspapers of eighteenth-century Virginians, which demonstrate the differences in the death customs of men and women. Because of men’s involvement in public activities like business and politics, they gave greater forethought into how acts of remembrance would reflect their positions. Women’s duties were centered on the home and family. This resulted in less elaborate death customs as well as greater responsibility for appropriately attending to the remembrance of others. Despite the overwhelmingly private nature of women’s funerals and burials, gravestones, death notices, and the responsibilities of widowhood briefly brought women into the public realm.

The Shadow of Change: Politics and Memory in New England's Historic Burying Grounds, 1630-1776

Hopkins, Caitlin Galante DeAngelis 06 June 2014 (has links)
This dissertation recovers the political histories of New England's historic graveyards. From their early rejection of English burial practices to their modern incarnation as tourist attractions, New England's historic graveyards have been public forums for political posturing and debate. Far from the tranquil sanctuaries of later imagination, burying grounds of the colonial era were places where both the powerful and the relatively powerless could make shows of their strengths and air their grievances.

Begravningsplatser som arkiv : Gravstenar som dokument / Cemeteries as Archives : Gravestones as Documents

Zingmark, Fanny January 2022 (has links)
Introduction This thesis deals with the potential similarities between cemeteries and archives and the potential similarities between gravestones and documents. To give context, a background on the evolution of Swedish cemeteries is provided. The potential similarities are then explored from a practical and an operational perspective, respectively, based on, e.g., the historical development of archives as discussed in Terry Cook’s four paradigms. In addition, abstract and metaphorical perspectives are explored with respect to Michel Foucault’s and Jacques Derrida’s theories of the archive. Method The method consists of qualitative observations from selected cemeteries in Stockholm combined with image analyses of photographs of gravestones taken during the observations. The observations and image analyses are based on the search for possible denotations and connotations. The method section assumes a hermeneutic approach.  Analysis Four observations made at Katarina kyrkogård, Maria Magdalena kyrkogård, Skogskyrkogården and Norra begravningsplatsen are presented. Fourteen image analyses of photographs of gravestones taken at these cemeteries are reported. Results  The results show similarities between cemeteries and archives as well as similarities between gravestones and documents. Conclusion Several similarities can be established by applying different archive-theoretical perspectives to cemeteries and gravestones. On an operational plane, the evolution of cemeteries follows the historical development of archives in several aspects. Abstract and metaphorical similarities are presented, mainly from a power perspective. A discussion on how these similarities provide the possibility of using an archival approach, partly in future research and partly in the preserving work of cemeteries, gravestones and the ecclesiastical activities is provided. This is a two years master's thesis in Archival science.
