Alberto Ginastera's Harp Concerto, Op. 25: A Synthesis of Argentine Nationalism and Neo-Expressionism

Green, Rachel Kay, Green, Rachel Kay January 2017 (has links)
The Harp Concerto, Op. 25 by Alberto Ginastera holds an important place in the harp repertoire, as it is one of the longest and most virtuosic concerti, and yet even the most prominent Ginastera scholars have not included it in their analyses. This study examines Ginastera's musical styles and how they are combined in the Harp Concerto to create a piece that both portrays Ginastera’s Argentine heritage and appeals to an international music audience through the use of contemporary compositional techniques. The overarching styles used in the Harp Concerto are Argentine Nationalism and Neo-Expressionism. Argentine Nationalism is seen in Ginastera's use of the malambo rhythm, special effects that mimic guitar writing, the guitar chord, and specific melodic figures and orchestral textures. Aspects of Neo-Expressionism include the replacement of traditional harmony with large clusters, the prominence of the (0167) tetrachord, the presence of a twelve-tone row, an overall increase in chromaticism, and the use of extended harp techniques. Argentine traits are present throughout several of Ginastera's Neo-Expressionistic compositions; however, the Harp Concerto stands out because of the clarity with which each style is incorporated, as well as in the unique way in which they are combined.

Establishing Editorial Principles to Create a Performance Edition of Selections From Appunti Op 210 By Mario Castelnuovo-tedesco

Lee, Chris 05 1900 (has links)
This paper examined editorial methods used in producing published versions of the music of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968). From this examination, I established some editorial principles to create a performance edition of five movements from book two of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Appunti op. 210. This paper includes a discussion of the sources and methods used in establishing editorial criteria. at the request of the Milanese guitarist Ruggero Chiesa (1933-1993), Castelnuovo-Tedesco set out to create a collection of didactic pieces for young guitarists. the pieces were to be collaboratively edited and fingered by Chiesa, and then given final approval by the composer. Unfortunately, the composer died before finishing the work. the pieces and sketches that survive exist in four volumes published by the Italian house, Suvini Zerboni, containing the pieces that Chiesa edited with the approval of Castelnuovo-Tedesco. the published edition also includes unedited pieces that did not undergo the collaborative process. with the goal of maintaining an unadulterated portrayal of the composer’s intentions, Chiesa presented these pieces as they appear in the manuscript. Much of the music is unidiomatic and either impossible or highly impractical to play. My study established some editorial principles for use in creating a performance edition of this work. the edition includes my engraving of the original unedited manuscript as well as ossia measures containing solutions to performance problems. the suggested solutions balance the perception of the composer’s intentions, established editorial practices, and idiomatic concerns to creating a playable edition.

Transcription of Baroque Works for Classical Guitar: J S Bach's Sonata in D Minor (Bwv 964) As Model

Lang, Matthias 05 1900 (has links)
Continuing the common practice of composers of the Baroque period to transcribe their own or other composers' works for a different instrument, this dissertation contributes to studies of J. S. Bach's repertory as the source of program material for the classical guitar. It is from differences revealed through a comparative analysis of Bach's Violin Sonata No. 2 (BWV 1003) and his harpsichord arrangement thereof – Sonata in D minor (BWV 964) – that principles of transcription are derived and organized according to descriptive categories. Emulating the composer-transcriber with knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the instruments involved, the arrangement procedures are applied to the classical guitar. In so doing, this study addresses the emerging challenges and complexities in creating an idiomatic arrangement.

Renberg, Gustav January 2021 (has links)
In this project, Gustav Renberg has explored new methods of integrating different musical influences into his compositions. He examines how incorporating rules and criteria can affect the creative process, as well as the result. Some of his main goals with the project has been to broaden his perspective and to strengthen his own musical voice. Renberg describes the creative process of each composition, as well as the methods he used. He also conducted two separate interviews with two established and renowned musicians to dwell even deeper into the subject. Furthermore, he describes the process of putting his group together and the results of his final concert. Renberg concludes that the project has given him new tools for composing, and that it has strengthened him as a writer, as well as a musician in whole. He has created a method that has expanded his frame of reference, and he expresses how he looks forward to further develop it in the future. / <p>Medverkande musiker: </p><p>Gustav Renberg - gitarr</p><p>Sebastian Jonsson - saxofon</p><p>Britta Virves - piano</p><p>Tomas Sjödell - kontrabas</p><p>Jonas Bäckman - trummor</p>

Fällman, Pontus January 2022 (has links)
In this project, I wanted to explore how I could broaden my improvisational and compositional skills by analyzing existing music. I worked with ingraining new transcribed material from some of my favorite musicians in four new compositions. I give examples of the methods I used and discuss how I incorporate them. I discuss how my improvisation has developed and improved by practicing my compositions and the new concepts they involve. I discuss the connection between my improvisational development and the study of these new musical concepts and how my improvisation skills got affected by playing my original music. In conclusion, this project has given me a more straightforward path in how I want to develop my improvisational knowledge. My new compositions have guided me in my practice and showed me new areas to develop. This project has shown how transcribing and analyzing small fragments of music can affect a musician’s improvisational and compositional approach. I also reflect upon how this work can be developed further. / <p>Repertoar: </p><p>Mr B - Pontus Fällman</p><p>Singing Walley - Pontus Fällman </p><p>4535 - Pontus Fällman</p><p>Panic station - Pontus Fällman </p><p>Ohio - Pontus Fällman</p><p>For someone - Pontus Fällman</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>medverkande musiker:</p><p>Piano - Kalle Johansson</p><p>Kontrabas - Olle Lannér Risenfors</p><p>Trummor - Henrik Jäderberg</p><p>Gitarr och komposition - Pontus Fällman</p><p>Trumpet - Linnea Jonsson</p><p>Altflöjt - Kleer Suurskild</p><p>Trombon - Elias Fridolfsson</p><p>Trombon - Elias Ukkonen Widding</p><p>Basklarinett - Astrid le Clerq</p><p>Sång – Selma Pinton</p>

Hanes, Samuel January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this project has been to develop the interplay between guitar and piano in a jazz ensemble context. There are a lot of great examples of interplay with these instruments but there are also well-known issues when guitar and piano share a musical context. Examples of these issues can be rhythmic, harmonic, register of the instruments, the time it takes for changes in the music to happen or the direction of the music. The project is based on exercises for guitar and piano as well as specific exercises for guitar.    I discuss the different challenges and opportunities that present themselves throughout the progress of the project and how the exercises I constructed affect the different aspects of interplay. The discussion is partially based on the result of my exam concert. I also debate whether the exercises have a big impact on the result or if there’s other factors to consider.    The conclusion is that the exercises are less important than the discussions and reflections that this project has led to. The project shouldn’t be seen as a solution but rather a reflection that can give insight on the subject. / <p>Medverkande: </p><p>Samuel Hanes (Elgitarr), Eskil Larsson (Tenorsaxofon), David Stener (Piano), Jakob Ulmestrand (Kontrabas), Henrik Jäderberg (Trummor).</p><p>Framförda verk: </p><p>Untitled 06, Sorry Tom, Slip-Up, Untitled 02, Trippy Tilly. </p>

Phase Locked Loop and Modulo Games, The Dogma Loops; and “Finding Ibrida”

Stewart, Kenneth David January 2016 (has links)
<p>This dissertation consists of two independent musical compositions and an article detailing the process of the design and assembly of an electric guitar with particular emphasis on the carefully curated suite of embedded effects. </p><p>The first piece, 'Phase Locked Loop and Modulo Games' is scored for electric guitar and a single echo of equal volume less than a beat away. One could think of the piece as a 15 minute canon at the unison at the dotted eighth note (or at times the quarter or triplet-quarter), however the compositional motivation is more about weaving a composite texture between the guitar and its echo that is, while in theory extremely contrapuntal, in actuality is simply a single [superhuman] melodic line.</p><p>The second piece, 'The Dogma Loops' picks up a few compositional threads left by ‘Phase Locked Loop’ and weaves them into an entirely new tapestry. 'Phase Locked Loop' is motivated by the creation of a complex musical composite that is for the most part electronically transparent. 'The Dogma Loops' questions that same notion of composite electronic complexity by essentially asking a question: "what are the inputs to an interactive electronic system that create the most complex outputs via the simplest musical means possible?"</p><p>'The Dogma Loops' is scored for Electric Guitar (doubling on Ukulele), Violin and Violoncello. All of the principal instruments require an electronic pickup (except the Uke). The work is in three sections played attacca; [Automation Games], [Point of Origin] and [Cloning Vectors]. </p><p>The third and final component of the document is the article 'Finding Ibrida.' This article details the process of the design and assembly of an electric guitar with integrated effects, while also providing the deeper context (conceptual and technical) which motivated the efforts and informed the challenges to hybridize the various technologies (tubes, transistors, digital effects and a microcontroller subsystem). The project was motivated by a desire for rigorous technical and hands-on engagement with analog signal processing as applied to the electric guitar. ‘Finding Ibrida’ explores sound, some myths and lore of guitar tech and the history of electric guitar distortion and its culture of sonic exploration.</p> / Dissertation

Jältfors, Katarina January 2017 (has links)

Romão, Paulo César Veríssimo, 1982- January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation has the Classic Romantic Guitar as a theme. This instrument is the immediate antecedent of the modern guitar. Our aim is to verify, through a bibliographic research, the process of birth and transformations suffered by this instrument. Therefore, we adopted a methodological background from the French historiography, called History of Mentalities. The present research starts gathering the most meaningful questions for a nineteenth century persona, more precisely in the period between the French Revolution and the First World War. Thus, the first part of this essay seeks to comprehend questions like the frontiers between the public and the private aspects of live, and the perception of an individual as a social actor. In the next moment, we quest to unravel the procedures of construction of the Classic Romantic Guitar, as well as identify the people involved, and most closely, the Methods written for this instrument. Through the evaluation of these Methods, we look for understanding on the ideas that guided the composition and the guitar performance during the nineties. The final part of the essay is more reflexive, and analyses the desertion of the publications of Methods from the twentieth century, the creation of the "extended technique", and reflects about the terms "school", "technique" and "tradition". This research is justified by the necessity of a historical establishment for the most frequently found instrument in all Americas, and by the possibility to comprehend the means through which an instrument, a performer or a Method resists to time, and become part of History. Finally, this research extends itself to the field of historical musicology, since the last concert presented as part of this Masters will be performed on a replica of a classical-romantic guitar / Mestre
