Parental Incarceration and Juvenile Delinquency: The Role of Gender

Weyland, Kirstie S. 09 June 2021 (has links)
Parental incarceration is connected to many negative outcomes for children including negative externalizing behaviors. Most studies are not conclusive in determining whether maternal incarceration or paternal incarceration has a more detrimental impact on children. This study looks at a sample of 2,458 youth from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS) and their parents and compares the gender of the incarcerated parent and that of the child to determine if there are differences in the risk of delinquent behavior among adolescent children. Results found that parental incarceration overall increased the risk of juvenile delinquency and that female children are at greater risk of delinquency if their mothers were incarcerated. Overall, the empirical results suggest that the gender of the parent and child matter in influencing delinquent behavior. Because maternal incarceration appears to be more consequential for female daughters' participation in delinquent acts, there may be a need to have more gendered research when studying juvenile delinquency and parental incarceration.

Creative Becoming(s): The Spiritual Development of Young Muslims in the West Through Literature

Nabavi, Motahareh 04 May 2022 (has links)
Young Muslims growing up in the West face dichotomous narratives that fragment their being, creating internal divisiveness. Islamic spirituality, especially the notion of tawheed, promotes oneness and unity of being. In this thesis, I explore the spiritual development of young Muslims in the West through literature amidst these dichotomous narratives. Using sociocultural theory and narrative inquiry, I first explore the threads of dichotomous narratives throughout history that create a binary of Muslims and the West, proving them insubstantial. Then, I explore the lives of two young Muslims, a male, and a female, growing up in Toronto. I story their lives, rooting their spiritual development in the literature they read, which is socioculturally embedded. Finally, I reflect on the harmonies, and tensions that exist within the stories. Tensions signify third spaces of productive growth, in which young Muslims can contests meaning and open pathways for creative becoming(s).

Violence Risk Assessment through a gendered lens - is there a need to develop gender-specific risk assessment tools

Leven, Lena January 2019 (has links)
Violence risk assessment is important given the impact and consequences it has on offenders, victims and the public. Different tools have been developed to assess an offender’s risk. However, so far these tools are based on male theories of offending and its applicability among female offenders has been questioned by proponents of the gendered perspective. The gendered perspective argues that violence and criminal behaviour emerges based on experiences that are different between men and women. The present systematic review aims to inform about the predictive validity of current risk assessment tools among female offenders to establish whether there is a need to develop female-specific tools. 17 studies have been reviewed and evidence overall supports the gendered perspective by showing that current tools have no, or only a limited, ability to predict future behaviour among women. Some promising results have been delivered by tools that include the ‘central eight’ risk factors which indicates that some of these factors might be relevant for female risk assessment. However, consideration of qualitative and quantitative differences of risk factors should be included in risk assessment among women to improve the predictive validity. The results are discussed in the light of a feminist perspective but also give a critical view on violence risk assessment in general. Overall, this systematic review calls for more research thatfocuses on gender-specific risk factors and that promotes the development of new tools.

"Det sitter i väggarna" : En tematisk analys av Umeå kommunfullmäktige och könade villkor

Rockman, Dylan January 2023 (has links)
Based on a motion submitted to the Umeå City Council, "It's in the walls" A thematic analysis of the Umeå municipal council and gendered conditions aims to investigate and understand the gendered conditions for political involvement in the Umeå City Council. To fulfil the purpose, interviews were conducted with women who chose to leave their political assignment and a survey was sent out to the current municipal council. The results show that mainly young women are vulnerable and that their interests are not equally represented as men's. There also seem to be negative experiences of both the physical work environment and the psychosocial work environment.
