The impact of social networking sites on socialization and political engagement: Role of acculturation

Kizgin, Hatice, Jamal, A., Rana, Nripendra P., Dwivedi, Y.K., Weerakkody, Vishanth J.P. 18 September 2018 (has links)
Yes / This research examines the extent to which immigrant consumers' use of social networking sites affect their socialization and political engagement in the Netherlands. The study uses self-administered questionnaires to collect data from 514 Turkish-Dutch respondents of various ages, occupations, levels of education and locations in the Netherlands. The study finds that the propensity to share information, the intensity of use, and privacy concerns positively impact socialization on online social networking sites. In addition, a significant positive relationship between socialization and political involvement positively impacts voting intentions. The study also examines the interaction effects of enculturation and acculturation orientations on the relationship between socialization and political involvement. The study's findings point to a positive moderating role of acculturation in this relationship but a negative one for enculturation. The study is the first to investigate simultaneously the drivers of socialization on social networking sites in the context of immigrant consumers and the impact of their socialization on political involvement and voting intention. The research further contributes to the scholarly work by exploring the interaction effects of acculturation and enculturation orientation. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Impact of acculturation, online participation and involvement on voting intentions

Jamal, A., Kizgin, Hatice, Rana, Nripendra P., Laroche, M., Dwivedi, Y.K. 08 August 2019 (has links)
Yes / This study examines the extent to which acculturation and enculturation orientations affect online political participation, political involvement and voting intentions among a sample of Turkish-Dutch immigrants. The study uses data from Turkish-Dutch participants. Structural Equations Modelling (SEM) is employed for assessing the relationships in the conceptualized model. The findings show that enculturation and acculturation influence online participation and involvement, which in turn, are related to voting intentions. The study further examines the mediating role of political involvement and online political participation. Political involvement mediates the relationships between enculturation and acculturation and voting intentions. The results further indicate the effect of online participation on voting intentions is mediated by political involvement. The study findings provide insights into offline and online cultural and civic engagement tendencies among an important immigrant segment that policy makers should consider in the future.

A case study of college student political involvement

Wilson, Katherine R. Bryant 12 1900 (has links)
xiv, 120 p. A print copy of this title is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The purpose of this dissertation study is to explore and describe the development of political attitudes and behaviors in current undergraduate academic life. By undertaking this study, I sought to add to the understanding of student learning as it pertains to college student development through political involvement. I employed an embedded case study design comparing two groups of highly politically involved 18-24 year old college students at a large, public, urban university. Selective sampling resulted in the identification of two case study groups. One group (n=3) was highly politically involved in high school. The other group (n=3) became highly involved once in college. By selecting groups based upon high school political involvement, this study began to examine what experiences influence the development of this important college outcome. This study generates a conceptual model that combines Astin's (1970a) Theory of College Impact, Verba, Schlozman and Brady's (1995) Civic Voluntarism Model, CIRCLE's (2003) Index of Civic and Political Engagement. This model proposes that if students have available resources and something engages their interest in politics, experiences such as work, academic experiences, co-curricular involvement, service participation and church participation may be avenues for the development of both civic skills and social connections that lead to political involvement. For students in this age range, concurrent processes of cognitive development and socio-cultural identity development may also contribute to the development of political involvement. Political involvement can take the form of electoral and campaign behaviors, political voice activities and attentiveness to current issues and political news. Differences between the two groups studied yielded few findings all of which occurred in pre-college factors. Although the small sample size and the limitation of the study to a single institutions suggest the need for more research to confirm these findings, this study affirms the strong influence that intentional college experiences may have in developing positive political attitudes and behaviors. / Committee in charge: David Conley, Chairperson, Educational Leadership; Diane Dunlap, Member, Educational Leadership; Gerald Tindal, Member, Educational Leadership; Wesley Wilson, Outside Member, Economic

"Det sitter i väggarna" : En tematisk analys av Umeå kommunfullmäktige och könade villkor

Rockman, Dylan January 2023 (has links)
Based on a motion submitted to the Umeå City Council, "It's in the walls" A thematic analysis of the Umeå municipal council and gendered conditions aims to investigate and understand the gendered conditions for political involvement in the Umeå City Council. To fulfil the purpose, interviews were conducted with women who chose to leave their political assignment and a survey was sent out to the current municipal council. The results show that mainly young women are vulnerable and that their interests are not equally represented as men's. There also seem to be negative experiences of both the physical work environment and the psychosocial work environment.

We understand education as a political act, and assuming that teachers, when they have clarity of their pedagogical practice regarding the environmental theme, act in an intentional way for the transformation of society. The qualitative perspective was seen as more appropriate to the study, and the instrument for producing the data was the in-depth interview. For the analysis we take as theoretical reference the Dialogical analysis of the discourse (BAKHTIN, 2006). We tried to identify the experiences that approached the teachers both aspects related to the environmental theme and the political dimension of the environmental theme. With regard to the environmental theme in the school context, experiences such as field trips, the remembrance of teachers that involved more broadly the environmental issues in their classes and the experiences at the university were highlighted. In the non-school context, playful experiences during childhood, family practices, and participation in religious communities were cited. Regarding the political dimension in the non-school context, the reference to parental political participation in unions and mobilizations, participation in grassroots ecclesial communities and groups of friends were cited as important experiences. In the school context, contact with teachers who proposed the debate of ideas, higher education participation in Student Movements, conflict context of the public university and contact with scientific research were experiences that sensitized them to the political dimension of education and of environmental issues. Thus we identify the motivations for the work, as well as the contents, resources and didactic procedures that teachers use when trying to include the environmental theme in their classes. In addition to listing the possibilities and limitations for working with this theme in school.

A practical-theological evaluation of the contextualization of theological education by extention in Southern Africa : a Wesleyan perspective

Lo, James 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this research project was to explore whether or not the TEE programme of The Wesleyan Church in Southern Africa is effectively contextualized to help churches to experience numerical increases in church attendance and in new congregations being started. Three aspects of contextualization were examined in relationship to The Wesley'.3-n Church's TEE programme: ( 1) Content, focusing upon the theme of "liberation"; ( 2) Methodology, focusing upon the theme of "conscientization"; and (3) Structures, focusing upon the theme of "involvement in context". At the outset of this research project, I hypothesized that The Wesleyan Church's TEE programme in Mozambique was being effectively contextualized, while the TEE programme in South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe was not. Data was collected by means of four different questionnaires, interviews, and observations made as a participant observer in different TEE classes. A letter was initially sent to 175 individuals who had been, or still were, still involved in the TEE programme of The Wesleyan Church in Southern Africa. A.total of 132 individuals responded and stated that they would be willing to participate in my research project. The data analysis indicates that when TEE helps its students to adhere to the following three principles of contextualization, the church is able to experience numerical growth; (1) Both the clergy and the laity have a vital ministry; (2) It is important to minister to the spiritual needs of people, as well as to the social and political needs of the people; and (3) Christians must be helped to think and act critically and creatively about the contexts in which they live and work. The conclusion seems to be that the Mozambican TEE programme, because it is being contextualized, is helping its churches to grow. On the other hand, the TEE programme in South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, because it has not been effectively contextualized, seems to be powerless in helping its churches to do the same. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / Th. Transforming Africa : the role of the church in developing political leaders

Banza, Kabuaya 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis reflects on how to develop an African leadership that can contribute to the effective transformation of the African continent. After analysing the concept of leadership and categorising it for better understanding, the mission of the church as a developer of leaders par excellence has been examined and its potentials and limits assessed. Then, the thesis studied the specific extent of poor African leadership and its dire socio-political consequences in a sub-Saharan African country; so, the context of DR Congo was analysed. After that the contribution of the notion of African Renaissance to the whole debate of leadership development in Africa was assessed and the social, economic and political climate of the continent analysed. The poor and deficient African leadership has been identified as the main cause of rampant conflicts and wars, a slow economic development and lack of transformation in the continent. Given that church leadership seemed so poor and inefficient, the thesis has recommended that the African church needed primarily to transform its own leadership to be able to effectively develop transformational political leadership. The analysis of African institutions already involved in the development of an African leadership for socio-political transformation has shown that Christianising African leadership and socio-political institutions alone was not enough. So, the thesis has proposed a comprehensive socio-political discipleship for the transformation of both individuals and their communities. In a nutshell, the discipleship includes a socio-political intercession1, a four-dimensional discipleship, a socio-political psychotherapy and a church involvement project for socio-political transformation. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D.
