Role náhody v novo-mediálním umění na příkladu tvorby Zdeňka Sýkory / The role of randomness in new media art on the example of Zdeněk Sýkora

Poliaková, Karolína January 2018 (has links)
The paper maps the use of the principle of randomness in artistic activity with a focus on visual art and the placement of Czech art into the world context. It examines the hypothesis whether randomness in the hands of the artist becomes an instrument to objectify his or her work and to approach the general principles of the natural world, which, according to the assumption, add novelty and consequently increases its artistic value. The text begins with an etymological interpretation of the concept of randomness, further observes the randomness as phenomenon in various social spheres, and eventually presents the artistic movements and artworks that systematically use randomness. An overview of avant-garde art and abstraction of the first half of the 20th century will allow the author to interpret the principles of randomness used in computer art. The work concludes with a detailed analysis of Zdeněk Sýkora's work, in which, according to the author, the development line of precomputational art is mirrored, along with a breakthrough to digital tools. The conclusion of the work reveals the diversity of the application of the principle of randomness in the art world and finds a common divisor in the objectivizing function, respectively the rising aesthetic value. Through this interpretation, Zdeněk...

Poesiemaschinen - Maschinenpoesie

Link, David 20 January 2005 (has links)
The present dissertation analyses text generators from the early times of computer history, since the 1970ies, starting from their source code. Variable scripts, Joseph Weizenbaum''s "Eliza", Kenneth Colby''s "Parry", early adventure games and Terry Winograd''s "SHRDLU" are investigated regarding their metaphorical and arithmetical structure. These programs can be traced back to the belief of the formal-logic tradition that language and the knowledge about the world represented by it can be fully explained and even be formalised, like it culminates in Ludwig Wittgenstein''s "Tractatus". Technically, optional elements are arranged in tree-like structures and generate seemingly endless variance. A second line of tradition is opposed to this, that works on operations rather than on options. It is linked to the dadaist Tristan Tzara, the re-discovery of the Russian mathematician Andrei Markov by Claude Shannon and the cutup-experiments of William S. Burroughs. As a continuation, the computer program "Poetry Machine" is described in detail, which was developed within the framework of the present dissertation. This interactive text generator is based on semantic networks and acquires its information autonomously from the internet. The translation of the fundamental text "An Example of Statistical Investigation of the Text ''Eugene Onegin'' Concerning the Connection of Samples in Chains" by A. Markov into German is given in the appendix.

Finck-Beccafico, Barbara 08 1900 (has links)
DNA Poetry is an artistic project rooted in an interdisciplinary approach, combining programming, biotechnology, sound and visual creation, esotericism as well as participatory and performative art. This thesis reviews the different stages of reflection and creation around this project, first of all by placing it in its historical and artistic context, first off within the bioart artistic movement, then more precisely within the use of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the arts. We'll see how DNA Poetry fits alongside visual and audio genetic artworks, as well as portraiture, while showcasing the artistic and aesthetic influences that inspire my work. Then, this thesis addresses three questions which are at the heart of the conceptual development of this project: 1) the tensions between algorithm and subjectivity, that is to say the constant negotiation between the artist's control and autonomy of the machine; 2) data interpretation, in order to establish meaning in what is received and brought to the material; 3) and finally the bioethical considerations raised by this project. Then, the thesis details the technical process and the tools used, as well as the creative process in which the esoteric approach is fundamental. Finally, we will see the impact of DNA data on the audio and visual outcome, as well as the portraits that result from them. DNA Poetry is an artistic project that brings together both the development of an application whose algorithm and mappings make it possible to generate audiovisual material from DNA data, as well as the composition of portraits, through the human, esoteric and artistic interpretation of this material, in order to create individual videomusic art pieces.
