January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: The point of this work consists on reading a set of photographs, photoreports and statements about the Bahia’s backland, peering the constructions of landscapes associated to sertão, especially the caatinga. With a specific focus on the geographic production and photojournalism developed between 1946 and 1960, I sustain the thesis that such processes were connected, on one side, to the new aesthetics values stablished by the documentar photography, and on the other side, to the post-war nationalist and developmentalist political conjucture. The sertões baianos, while space and landscape, set up from visual concepts and conventions that went through the language of geographers and photographers. Having this in perspective, my analysis focused on spatial cutting, like São Francisco River and Canudos, and on photographic looks like the ones of Tibor Jablonsky, Stivan Faludi, Pierre Verger and Marcel Gautherot. These photographers had contributed significantly to the construction of a visuality of the sertões baianos associated to the national dimension that, on the other hand, circumscribed Brazil as territorial unit resulted from regional diversity. On the basis of these interpretations, a theoretical board that conceives photography and landscape as cultural artifacts, that have meaning according to certain supports, contexts and social circuits is found. For this, we contemplate both his best-known writings widely studied, as those which have received less attention. We make extensive use of Owald‘s geographical allusions, prevailing metaphors, but also the prospect of further development, which its modernity is impregnated. To carry out this dialogue, we draw on the Hayden Withe‘s historiographical proposal, the John Wright‗s concept of geographical imagination, and Edward Said and Yu-Fi Tuan‘s contributions.

Superman as a Historical Figure, 1938–2022

Andrew Fogel (14202968) 02 December 2022 (has links)

This study charts the real-world impact of Superman and how embedded the superhero is within American culture. Since debuting in 1938 as the first superhero, kids embraced Superman as a heroic symbol to emulate while adults mainly used him as comedic fodder to discuss race and ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Although Superman is a fictional character, he maintains traceable documentary footprints and should be treated as a historical figure. Through sincere and satirical play, the public brought the Man of Steel and his make-believe world to life as an immersive realm and metatopography. This project studies the reception and adaptation of Superman by the populace and the geography of Comicland, a surreal realm mirroring our own modern reality that exists both within the imagination and the material world through pageant, masquerade, and multimedia. The beauty of this fictive universe is its mutability, being a permanent yet intangible place that imprinted itself in the real world. Comics fans do not have to travel to a theme park, even though it is now part of that type of entertainment, to participate in the fantasy. Comicland is, thus, a mental and physical landscape that audiences can inhabit as their own regardless of location and serves as a portal between fantasy and reality. From Superman’s inception, critics dismissed the superhero as a fad and its culture as marginal. However, multigenerational and multidecade engagement with Superman shows that the genre is mainstream and an unfading facet of Americana.

Geographical Imagination in Utopian Fiction (17th and 18th centuries)

Bellemare, Alex 14 December 2017 (has links)
Why were utopian fictions in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries written in the form of a first person imaginary travel ? Most commentators study utopian literature as being a concept ; the form it adopts and the representations it deploys are considered, at best, incidental. Our hypothesis is quite different : these texts should interest the historian of literature precisely because they present themselves in the form of a narrative in which the subjectivity of the narrator is problematic. By their construction mixing factual and fictional elements, these texts can be read in the double perspective of the “world as fable” and the “fable as world”. We will study this duality through the notion of geographical imagination : the texts we analyze are addressing the links between travel and language, territory and society, mobility and subjectivity. The geographical imagination that we will interpret is a process that informs the perception of the world and the possibility of its representation. This doctoral thesis is divided in two parts : we will investigate depictions of space and spatial practices which are both mediations between the utopian traveler and the places he crosses.
