Experiences and Expectations of an African American Male Veteran Student in Higher Education

Cole-Morton, Gladys S 01 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Since the Post-9/11 GI Bill an increasing number of veterans and military students are seeking to complete degrees online and through enrollment at campuses across the nation (Brown 2011). The increased number of military students in postsecondary education settings presents challenges and opportunities for both the veteran student and institution of higher education. Military students also referred to as veteran students are choosing to pursue postsecondary education for occupational and employment opportunities, personal growth and enrichment, and to use their Post-9/11 GI education benefits. It is expected that military personnel with past military service in Afghanistan and Iraq will become a growing student population enrolled in U.S postsecondary education. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experiences and expectations of an African American male veteran student at an institution of higher education. This qualitative research study included an in-depth interview with an African American male veteran student. Through interviewing the participant, I listened to the experiences and expectations from an African American male veteran student from Iraq War who attended a state assisted predominantly Caucasian university. The collection and analysis of his stories gave me an understanding of his diverse needs, experiences, and expectations.

Tradutores-intérpretes de LIBRAS na Saúde: o que eles nos contam sobre questões éticas em suas práticas / Sing language medical interpreters: what they tell us about ethical issues.

Pereira, Patricia Cristina Andrade 22 September 2014 (has links)
Introduction: The intercultural and interlinguistic service to deaf patients in the health contexts is an overlooked topic by specialized literature. The insertion of the TILS-GI (Portuguese abbreviation for Translator Interpreter of Brazilian Sign Language and Interpreter-Guide) is an important means to enable such service as provided by law. Objectives: Identifying the performance of TILS-GI in health services in the mediation of Portuguese-speaking teams and deaf patients, users of Brazilian sign language. Bringing to light the perception of TILS-GI about ethical aspects related to the communication, autonomy and privacy of deaf patients, understood herein as heath ethical principles, theoretical concepts and guiding analytical themes. Methodology: This is a qualitative, empirical descriptive research, of exploratory character based on the themes of communication, autonomy and privacy. Thirty TILS-GI who work in the Greater São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro areas were interviewed. The instrument of sampling consisted of three parts. The result analyses used the individual testimonials based on hypothetical or lived experiences. Results: the TILS-GIs interviewed were ad hoc. No professional employed by the health department was located. Their performances in the area were eventual, sparse, volunteer, informal and sometimes in high risk situations, dealing with confidential topics and when in lack of family members. In the terms of the communication axis, the challenges of interpretation are related to the lack of specific training and formal education in the area (jargon, intermodal and intercultural challenges), to the inability to cope with health-related issues and to the personal close relation of the professionals with the deaf patients. In the autonomy axis, we identified several degrees of participation of the patient, which heavily depends on the stance of the TILS-GI and the health teams. In the privacy axis, the information privacy was referred to homogenously by the group, which defended that the legitimate informant about the deaf patients processes was the TILS-GI themselves, according to the ethical code of the category. On the other hand, the variety of responses about the physical privacy was revealing of the lesser maturity and consensus among them. Conclusion: The TILS-GI have named ethical problems in their practice in the health area and how deaf people undergo multiple situations that extrapolate the linguistic mediation and unnecessary suffering. They are essential characters in the sense of enabling the rights of this populations. Their potential partnership with 9 all the participants of the interaction, however, would demand a more active process of reflection and exchange.

Conserved function of core clock proteins in the gymnosperm Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst)

Karlgren, Anna, Gyllenstrand, Niclas, Källman, Thomas, Lagercrantz, Ulf January 2013 (has links)
From studies of the circadian clock in the plant model species Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), a number of important properties and components have emerged. These include the genes CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 (CCA1), GIGANTEA (GI), ZEITLUPE (ZTL) and TIMING OF CAB EXPRESSION 1 (TOC1 also known as PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATOR 1 (PRR1)) that via gene expression feedback loops participate in the circadian clock. Here, we present results from ectopic expression of four Norway spruce (Picea abies) putative homologs (PaCCA1, PaGI, PaZTL and PaPRR1) in Arabidopsis, their flowering time, circadian period length, red light response phenotypes and their effect on endogenous clock genes were assessed. For PaCCA1-ox and PaZTL-ox the results were consistent with Arabidopsis lines overexpressing the corresponding Arabidopsis genes. For PaGI consistent results were obtained when expressed in the gi2 mutant, while PaGI and PaPRR1 expressed in wild type did not display the expected phenotypes. These results suggest that protein function of PaCCA1, PaGI and PaZTL are at least partlyconserved compared to Arabidopsis homologs, however further studies are needed to reveal the protein function of PaPRR1. Our data suggest that components of thethree-loop network typical of the circadian clock in angiosperms were present beforethe split of gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Umweltbildung und Geoinformation

Karrasch, Pierre 03 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Information management (IM) has a prominent role in all types of organizations, including the higher education institutions. This highlighted role is derived from the perception of information as a strategical resource that resulted in significant changes in the informational behavior of the associates and in the structures of the organizations. Other factors contribute to the use of IM in universities, mainly when it is observed the growth and expansion of federal higher education institutions, especially due to the employment of the Plan of Restructuring and Expansion of Federal Universities (REUNI), that resulted in significant impacts on their demands, mostly in the management of the administrative activities and the overload of information. Such demands require that universities use tools that better manage searching, selecting, processing, storing, sharing and using information, highlighting practices of information management with more relevance. The problem?s context identified in the Undergraduate Program?s Office of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PROGRAD/UFRN) was to optimize the information management in the process of registering the incoming students utilizing the available electronic tool? This study is justified for the importance that PROGRAD/UFRN has in the institution when it comes to the number of users of its services, volume of processes, activities and documents processing through. Thus, the objective is to propose the optimization in the information management of a strategical process of PROGRAD/UFRN. The specific objectives are: a) identify research on models of IM applied to other HEI; b) characterizing the information management of PROGRAD/UFRN, with basis on the information ecological approach; c) mapping an existing strategical process in PROGRAD/UFRN with the purpose to optimize it. To fulfill such objectives a qualitative, descriptive and applied study was developed, having the research-action as a strategy. The study was divided in four phases: diagnosing the problem?s context, planning the study, intervention and evaluation. To acquire the data, it was conducted a literature review, documental analysis, structured surveys applied, semi-structured interviews, focal groups organized and performed the participant observation. The results obtained indicate that PROGRA/UFRN has been employing partially the principals of Information Ecology regarding the external environments, organizational and informational, thus the information management is not integrated yet. To optimize the information management in this institution it is necessary that the people are taken into account when it comes to productivity, the use and sharing of information. The intervention proposal was built in a collaborative, implemented and evaluated manner that subsidized a more consistent and broad proposition for its use. It is understood that the enhancement of the strategical process of registering incoming students in the institution, utilizing the available functionality in the academic system still faces some obstacles. Finally, it is recommended that other studies are continued for the research of tools that make it possible the information management in public organizations, such as UFRN, become a strategical resource to reach its complete mission and objectives.

A Study of Selected Pedagogical Aspects of Two Intercultural Pieces for Late Intermediate and Early Advanced Students: "Variations sur un thème populaire coréen" by Sung-Ki Kim and "Six Pieces for Piano ‘Nori'" by Chung-Sock Kim

Choi, Yujin 12 1900 (has links)
I contend that young students should be introduced to intercultural contemporary music, as this exposure brings benefits to their artistic development and fosters appreciation of other cultures. Variations sur un thème populaire coréen by Sung-Ki Kim (b. 1954) and Six Pieces for Piano ‘Nori' by Chung-Sock Kim (b. 1940) are effective pedagogical works that fit perfectly into the intercultural mold mentioned above, and both are suitable for late intermediate or early advanced level students. A detailed comparison of these two works can help instructors understand the ways by which these composers incorporate Korean folk materials and blend them with Western contemporary techniques. An analysis of Sung-Ki Kim's Variations sur un theme populaire coréen and Chung-Sock Kim's Six Pieces for Piano ‘Nori' can be divided into three categories: harmony, rhythm, and performance-related aspects. By analyzing these two pieces, these study illustrates in greater depth their intercultural aspects, showing the way by which both composers merged traditional Korean folk idioms through the inclusion of traditional Korean rhythms, and the imitation of sounds of several traditional Korean instruments with Western contemporary technique such as non-traditional sounds and use of sostenuto pedal. Finally, this study provides some practicing suggestions and listing exercise on how to practice musical and technical challenges.
