Influence of clay minerals from lateritic nickel ore in the recovery of this metal.

Eliana Satiko Mano 04 November 2013 (has links)
The nickel lateritic ore from Niquelândia Goiás - is one of the most important and well known Ni lateritic deposits in Brazil. High nickel contents, the deposit dimension and also, their associations with clay minerals are the main reasons for researchers, such as Trescases and Santos, to have studied it in the 1970s. The Cuban and Australian deposits have nickel associated to oxidized ores and serpentine, respectively, but at Niquelandia, nickel is specially associated to smectites and vermiculites. The Caron Process is not the most suitable for treating Ni-bearing clay minerals, as those present in Niquelândia. Consequently, there are many losses related to silicated ore. The reduction temperature used in the Caron process in the reduction step can form minerals, such as pyroxene, amphibole and olivine. These minerals trap Ni inside their structure; hence, the ammoniacal solution can not access this element and solubilize it. The main Ni-bearing clay mineral observed in Niquelândia is smectite. Actually, the silicated ore is composed by a mixture of smectites. One of them is a Ni-trioctahedral one, which is not affected by ammoniacal leaching; however, it has a significant amount of nickel. On the other hand, a dioctahedral Fe-rich smectite, has high Ni recoveries, but its nickel content is lower. Samples composed by a mixture of di and trioctahedrals smectites - Fe-Mg-Ni montmorillonite/stevensite are the most common. Considering all these factors, the losses related to Ni-recoveries can be avoided by a better feed control. The ideal feed should be an oxidized ore + silicate ore composed by dioctahedrals smectites. The Ni trioctahedral smectite should be avoided.

The process of biological invasion by exotic species may lead to replacement of native species. This process is critical when it occurs within Protected Areas (PA). To understand the dynamics of invasion and spread of invasive species is necessary to take into account the characteristics of invasive species associated with abiotic and biotic characteristics of invaded ecosystems, the temporal issue and specific mechanisms to each system. We study by exploratory analyzes and Cellular Automaton simulation models, the expansion process of Brachiaria spp. in Emas National Park (Parna Emas), one of the most important Protected Areas of the Cerrado. We used data from spatial-temporal distribution of this species with a time lag of 10 years among them (2002 and 2012), over 80 km of internal roads of the Parna Emas (25% of the roads) to link the expansion of this invasive grass to environmental variables such as: relative distance along the sideroads inside the park, category of zonation, type of Cerrado vegetation and slope. The results indicate that the most important environmental factors in the expansion process of Brachiaria spp. where: the internal roads of the Parna Emas, whose presence and high frequency of use positively affect the growth of the grass, and in areas with intense vehicle traffic the abundance of Brachiaria spp. was ten times higher than in areas where access is restricted; light availability was the limiting factor to expansion, so that areas of open Cerrado physiognomies as Campo Limpo, proved to be more susceptible to invasion, with expansion up to twenty times greater than forested areas; and the slope, even subtle (about 1 degree), seemed drive the expansion of grass to the lower areas. From these results we point out some management measures such as: restricting the most the use of internal roads of Parna Emas and apply phytosanitary measures in vehicles, boots and clothing of staff and visitors in order to make impracticable the seeds dispersed by them; prioritize management in areas of Campo Limpo, one in particular placed in the center of Parna Emas that may be functioning as internal source of seeds; and we recommend paying attention to the places in declivity, in order to predict the direction of expansion and thus take the necessary preventive measures. We thus hope that our study will contribute to the development of better policies and actions of monitoring, management and control of Brachiaria spp. in Protected Areas, in general, and in Emas National Park in particular / Mestrado / Ecologia / Mestra em Ecologia

Applications of process-oriented design

Whitehead, James Norman January 2014 (has links)
Concurrency is generally considered to be difficult due to a lack of appropriate abstraction, rather than inherent complexity. Lock-based approaches to mutual exclusion are pervasive, despite the presence of models that are easier to understand, such as the message-passing model present in CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes). CSP provides a rich framework for building and reasoning about concurrent systems, but has historically required a change of programming language or paradigm in order to work with it. The Go programming language is a modern, imperative programming language that includes native support for processes and channels. The popularity of this language has grown and more and more people are being exposed to the fundamental ideas of CSP. There is a gap in the understanding of how a restrictive formal model can interact with and support the development of concurrent programs in a language such as Go. Through a series of case studies and analysis, we show how the CSP concurrency model can be used as the basis for the design of a concurrent system architecture without requiring the program to be written entirely as the composition of processes. It is also possible to use the CSP process algebra to build abstract models and use model-checking tools to verify properties of a concurrent system. These models can then be used to guide the decomposition of a system into a more fine-grained concurrent system. This thesis bridges the gap between the development of CSP-style concurrent software and the formal model of CSP. In particular, it shows how it is not necessary for a program or programming language to conform to rigid structure in order for CSP to be a useful tool for the development of reliable and easy to understand concurrent systems.

Do Privacy Concerns Matter in Adoption of Location-based Smartphone Applications for Entertainment Purposes : A Study Among University Students in Sweden

Blagodárný, David January 2017 (has links)
Adoption of location-based services (LBS) was for a long time below expectations, and most of the studies attribute it to privacy concerns of users. However, many new LBS applications are currently among the most downloaded application for smartphones, particularly entertainment applications. Therefore, this research aims to find out whether privacy concerns still matter to users and to explore the role of the privacy in the adoption of LBS entertaining applications. The adopted methodology is qualitative research and data are collected through interviews and additional information from the smartphones ofparticipants. Ten individuals among university students at Linnaeus University in Sweden are selected for this research, and this sample choice is per their experience with two selected LBS entertaining applications, Pokémon Go and Tinder. As a result, six themes have been recognized to answer the research questions. Low privacy concerns about location information, especially in entertainment applications with negligible effect on adoption have been identified. However, author of this research suggests, that developers of LBS entertaining applications should care for retaining their credibility because it can have an impact on the adoption of their LBS services.

Modélisation ontologique des recommandations de pratique clinique pour une aide à la décision à niveaux d'abstraction variables / Ontological modeling of clinical practice guidelines to provide flexible decision support

Galopin, Alexandre 16 September 2015 (has links)
Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are elaborated according to evidence-based medicine principles in order to improve healthcare quality. However, even when they are integrated into clinical decision support systems, recommendations are poorly implemented by physicians. Indeed, CPGs are often criticized for their lack of flexibility, and their inability to handle the singularity of patients encountered in clinical practice. In particular, CPGs are usually elaborated for a single pathology whereas patients usually suffer from multiple pathologies and comorbidities. We have proposed a method based on an ontological reasoning to enable the reconciliation of single-pathology CPGs to support the flexible management of patients with multiple pathologies. Knowledge bases are made of decision rules that formalize the content of single-pathology CPGs. Patient criteria are organized by a domain ontology, which allows the generation of a generalization-ordered graph of clinical patient profiles. The ontological reasoning allows to reason at different levels of abstraction to process clinical cases described with different levels of completeness. This method has been implemented in a decision support system called GO-DSS, and applied to the management of patients suffering from both arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes, on the basis of CPGs produced by the VIDAL company (VIDAL Recos). The prototype and its user interfaces have been qualitatively evaluated by a sample of users including both computer scientists with medical knowledge and physicians with computer skills.

Pokémon GO and the city : How Pokémon GO players in Uppsala use, experience and connect to the city

Cizinsky, Stefan January 2020 (has links)
Pokémon GO hit the world with a bang in the summer of 2016 and has since then set new records regarding revenue on multiple occasions. It has been researched extensively, although first and foremost from a HCI (human-computer interactions) and healthcare/public health perspective. In particular, studies approaching the phenomenon from a human geography and urban planning perspective have been very limited. This study therefore takes an inductive and exploratory approach and explores the ways in which Pokémon GO influences how players use and experience the city and how urban planners can use Pokémon GO in their work. To do this, nine interviews were conducted, six with currently active players and three with completely new players. A number of different themes emerged from the interviews and was subsequently used to structure the results. Physical activity, social interactions and benefits and exploration and discovery were the most prominent themes and also the most frequently mentioned reasons why players enjoy the game. Finally the findings are discussed in relation to planning with a focus on participatory planning practices but also in more general terms regarding urban and spatial planning.

Narrative strategies in the creation of animated poetry-films / Mekgwa ya kanegelo ge go hlangwa difilimi tša theto tša go ekišwa ke diphoofolo

Grobler, Diek, 1964- 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English, with abstracts and keywords in English and Sesotho / This doctoral study investigates the practice of narrative strategies in the creation of animated poetry-film. The status of the animator as auteur of the poetry-film is established on the grounds of the multiple instances of additional authoring that the animated poetry-film requires. The study hypothesises that diverse narrative strategies are operative in the production of animated poetry-film. Two diametrically opposed strategies are identified as ideal for the treatment of lyrical narrative. The first narrative strategy explored is that of metamorphosis, demonstrating how the filmic material originates and grows organically via stream of consciousness and free association. The second narrative strategy entails a calculated approach of structuring visual imagery and meaning through editing from a pre-existing visual lexicon. In both cases, the interdependence is explored between embodied activity and conceptual activity, between tacit and explicit knowledge in the creative act. These two strategies are practically investigated through my creative praxis, specifically the production of two animated poetry-films, Mon Pays and Parys suite. Through these works, the strategies are tested for their effectivity in communicating visual content not contained in the poetry-text, yet adding value to the poetry/animated film hybrid. Animated poetry-film is theoretically contextualised in terms of intermediality and the specific multi-modal nature of the medium. The construction of animated poetry-film is explored through the research study consisting of a thesis and two animated poetry films, with the hope of contributing to research on animated poetry-film specifically, and to animation theory within the South African context. / Dinyakišišo tše tša bongaka di nyakišiša tiro ya mekgwa ya kanagelo ge go hlangwe difilimi tša go ekišwa ke diphoofolo. Pravicový extremismus v Sasku / The right extremism in Saxony

Lisý, Marek January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the right-wing extremism in Federal Republic of Germany, particulary in the Free State of Saxony. The opening part presents the history of the right-wing extremism in the territory of former German Democratic Republic. The following part summarizes briefly the developement of rigth-wing extremism after the german unification. Main attention is focused on the currant course of events. One part is devoted to the strongest and most successfull extreme right-wing political party Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (NPD), especially to its election results. The thesis further monitors the development of the NPDs political strategy and the enforcing of this strategy in to practice. A special attention is paid to the concept of National befreite Zone (nationally liberated zone). Next parts of the text describe the rapidly growing right-wing extremist subculture. The penetration of right- wing extremism into the areas of sport, music and fashion is proved on several concrete examples. There is a separate chapter devoted to the criminal activities commited by right-wing extremists. It also deals with the legislation which is aimed against the expressions of the right-wing extremism.
