Avaliação de desempenho de reator anaeróbio-aeróbio com recirculação da fase líquida no tratamento de água residuária proveniente de abatedouro de aves / Performance evaluation of an anaerobic-aerobic reactor with recycle of the liquid phase for treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater

Pontes, Ana Flávia Vieira 27 April 2009 (has links)
This work aimed to evaluate the performance of an up-flow fixed bed reactor, operated in a continuous way, using expanded clay and polyurethane foam as supports for immobilization of the biomass, for treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. Initially, the reactor was operated under anaerobic and anaerobic-aerobic conditions for the treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. However, the COD removal efficiency was related to adsorption and not to biodegradation processes. In this way, the operational periods were short due to solids retention in the system. In the second part of this work, trying to reduce the lipids and solids concentration in the reactor\'s affluent, the wastewater was collected after a pre-treatment installed at the poultry slaughterhouse. This pre-treatment was constituted of a dissolved air flotation (DAF) system. As a result, the operational longevity of the reactor was increased and the COD and total nitrogen removal efficiencies were 90 \'+ OU -\' 4% and 44 \'+ OU -\' 10% respectively, and the denitrification efficiency was 89 \'+ OU -\' 6% under an anaerobic-aerobic condition with a recycle ratio of the liquid phase of 1,5. Therefore, the reactor showed a good performance in reducing the organic matter and removing nutrients simultaneously, since it is preceded by a pre-treatment for the partial removal of solids, oils and grease.

Graxa de poliuréia - estudo da compatibilidade da poliuréia, polialfaolefina e politetrafluoretileno irradiado para melhoria da lubricidade e estabilidade / Development of high performance lubricant through the compatibility of polyalphaolefin, polyurea and irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene

Ratão, Natalia Torres 11 December 2013 (has links)
Lubricants are gaseous, liquid, semi solid or solid (powder) materials those form a film between two parties preventing friction. High performance lubricants are designed to work under severe conditions of temperature, pressure, and contamination. The most used are liquids (oils) and semi solids (greases). Greases are applied where oils can drain or in inaccessible places and are divided generally into two classes, soap and no soap. The most used non soap grease is polyurea, obtained by the reaction between amine and isocyanate, has highly thixotropic, high dielectric strength and excellent anticorrosive property, so it is widely used for lubrication of electric motors and shipbuilding machinery. For a grease with high performance, in this study was used a synthetic lubricant fluid, polyalphaolefin, and was also employed solid lubricant additive polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) due its lowest coefficient of friction, is found commercially irradiated in air to obtain smaller particles and to produce oxygenated terminal groups those are more compatible with the metal surface. The tests conducted were comparatively between pure polyurea grease and with PTFE additive. The characterizations were made by infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis of C, N and H and Free NCO index, proving the formation of four carbons polyurea (tetraurea). The functional analysis of drop point and oil separation showed high stability and compatibility between the polymers increased when PTFE was added. The excellent resistance of pure tetraurea grease to wear and extreme pressure were demonstrated by four-ball and practical bearings tests, characterizing this grease as a high performance lubricant, when compared to most used greases in the market.

Design, testing and analysis of journal bearings for construction equipment

Strand, Henrik January 2005 (has links)
Grease-lubricated journal bearings present a common challenge for construction equipment manufacturers in the world. The common design methodology is based on empirical data and has worked very well historically because the market and governments have accepted that bearings in construction equipment need frequent lubrication and exchange of worn parts. Legal and market requirements will soon demand lower environmental impact and increased machine efficiency. These requirements call for better methods of designing grease lubricated journal bearings. The goal of the outlined work was to develop better design methods for grease lubricated journal-bearing design used in heavy-duty construction equipment machines, in order to prolong life and lubrication intervals. The research approach of the project can roughly be divided into three phases: 1. Development of test apparatus and test methods for journal bearing studies. 2. Bench tests of grease lubricated journal bearing design. 3. Verification between bench tests and computer simulations. In the thesis the current state of the art in bearing design for construction equipment is discussed and summarized in the form of design guidelines. The suggested design steps are just a mean to get to the starting point of design. The simple guidelines do however serve a purpose when collected since most published bearing design guidelines are aimed at the bushing material or at continuously rotating bearings. The influence of housing, environment and load cases can not be ignored when designing a bearing. Long term field-testing and experience can not be replaced until better design criteria have been established. Paper A deals with the design of the bearing test apparatus that was built and evaluated. Comparisons between theoretical contact and contact elements in Finite Element program have been made and discussed in paper B. In paper C a replica technique for measuring wear of large field specimens was evaluated. A case study of bearing housing design was performed in paper D utilizing Finite Element program and then validated in paper E in the bearing test apparatus. The influence of grease groove design on bushing life was tested and evaluated in paper F. Wear simulation of a plain bushing has been performed with a Finite Element program and presented in paper G. / QC 20100930

Feasibility and emissions of compression ignition engines fueled with waste vegetable oil [electronic resource] / by Morgan H. Crawford.

Crawford, Morgan H. January 2003 (has links)
Title from PDF of title page. / Document formatted into pages; contains 39 pages. / Thesis (M.S.)--University of South Florida, 2003. / Includes bibliographical references. / Text (Electronic thesis) in PDF format. / ABSTRACT: Research and experience has shown that vegetable oil can be processed, by transesterification, into a useable fuel for compression ignition engines. Earlier research examined using straight vegetable oil as a fuel, but found it to cause detrimental engine problems. Trial and error has shown that heating the vegetable oil prior to injection, is a viable option. A diesel vehicle engine was operated for over 188 hours or approximately 7,000 miles, using waste cooking oil as fuel. The longevity of the vehicle engine was limited by an undetermined engine failure. Using stationary testing, with no engine load and various power settings, engine emissions of several engines operating on waste cooking oil were compared to emissions from two other fuels, diesel and Biodiesel, and found to be very positive. Waste vegetable oil (WVO) had lower overall emissions than diesel and lower levels of nitrogen species than Biodiesel. / ABSTRACT: Agricultural yield predictions estimate that currently only 5% and at most 20% of all diesel fuel needs can be met with vegetable oil. Currently WVO is a disposal problem. It is primarily used as a feedstock. / ABSTRACT: WVO is not a commodity and has disposal fees associated with it. If WVO is used as a fuel, it would not only provide another source for disposal, but it may also increase the value of WVO making it a commodity instead of a disposal burden. / System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader. / Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Field Development and Performance Evaluation of a Constructed Wetland System in the Tropics

Hummel, Adelaide Pereira 08 November 2013 (has links)
This study is part of a project that was conducted by Florida International University (FIU), which designed, built, and characterized a constructed wetland (CW) wastewater treatment system in El Salvador, Central America. This study focuses on the detailed performance of a field-scale CW in the tropics, consisting of a subsurface flow wetland (SSF) and a surface flow wetland (SF). The SSF had a total area of 151.2 sq. m., filled with gravel and planted with Phragmites, Thalia, and Brachiaria, along three independent cells operating with a flow in parallel and receiving the influent domestic wastewater from a facultative lagoon and preceded the SF. The SF was a shallow open basin containing alternating regions of open water (195 sq. m. total) with submerged aquatic plants (Elodea) and regions of shallower water (605 sq. m. total) filled with emergent wetland vegetation (Typha, Thalia, and Cyperus). The design, construction, startup and operation phases of the field scale CW in that tropical setting are thus described with detail, including both SSF and SF characterization of influent and effluents. The SSF average hydraulic detention times during the wet and dry season were 2 days ± 0.9 days and 4 days ± 0.4 days, respectively; and the SF average hydraulic detention times during the wet and dry season were 20 days ± 11.1 days and 77 days ± 19.5 days, respectively. Brachiaria/Cyperus presented better results during the wet season with average BOD5 residuals of 36% ± 25%, and Thalia/Thalia during the dry season with average BOD5 residuals of 33% ± 22%. Phragmites/Typha presented better results during both seasons with average TSS residuals of 2% ± 3% (wet season), and 2% ± 2% (dry season). Residuals are also presented for COD, Oil & Grease, Total Fecal Coliform, Total Phosphorus, and Total Nitrogen. In addition, an assessment of the empirical models used in the design of the system is completed, having the EPA methodology as the preferred for BOD5 removal and three methodologies for TSS removal under tropical climate conditions. A comparison of the differences in treatment associated with each one of the selected plants and their combinations is also discussed. In summary, results strongly suggest that the CW system can effectively reduce contaminants in wastewater to levels that are comparable with the objective levels (i.e., secondary treatment levels).

Antonia LucivÃnia de Sousa Monte 12 April 2006 (has links)
In this study, the relative composition of the commercial cuts of the carcass and the tissue composition (muscle, bones and fat) of the thigh, loin and shoulders of half-blooded Boer, Anglo Nubian and undefined-breed kids (SPRD) were evaluated. The SPRDâs were used as control group. Forty-four pieces were used, of which 20 units of mixed-blooded Anglo Nubian x SPRD (13  Anglo Nubian x  SPRD and 7  Anglo Nubiano x  SPRD), sixteen Boer x SPRD (07  Boer x  SPRD and 09  Boer x  SPRD), and the remaining 8 heads being SPRDâs. The animals were slaughtered at the average age and weight of 12 months and 30 kg respectively live weight. After cooling the carcass at 2 degrees centigrade for 24 hours the following commercial cuts were set apart: thigh, loin ( front and hind ) shoulders, breast, ribs, neck, sirloin and the proportional weights were figured out in relation to the total weight of the cold carcass. Next, the thigh, loin (front and hind) and shoulders were dissected and the relationship between the weight of the cold carcass and yield was determined, setting apart the muscular, bone and grease tissues. From the weights of such tissues the relations muscle/bones (RMB) and muscle/fate (RMF) were estimated. The experimental scratch was designed in an entirely random way and the data was analyzed according to the GLM procedures in the SAS statistics package in the which the measurements were compared according to the Tukey test. The average yield of the cuts was: tight 29.8%, loin 24.7% ( front 18.3% and hind 6.4%), shoulders 20.8% , breast 5.0%, neck 7.16%, ribs 3.3%, sirloin 5.8%. No significant differences (P>0.05) were found among the genetic groups studied except for the neck and ribs. In the Boer mixed blooded animals higher yield (P>0.05) in the muscular tissues (64.88 %) and in RMB (5.40%) were absorbed. The Anglo Nubian mixed blooded animals showed a higher yield (P<0.05) in the grease tissues (9.46 %), whereas the SPRDâs showed a superior yield in the bone tissue (21.35%) and in the RMF (10.5). The conclusion was that in the cuts of greater commercial value, the carcass of Boer mixed shows a better yield of muscular tissue than the Anglo Nubian and SPRDâs half breeds

Auregan, Gilles 25 January 2016 (has links)
The planetary roller screw (PRS) mechanism is used in the aeronautics industry for electro-mechanical actuators application. It transforms a rotational movement into a translation movement, and it is designed for heavy loads. The main components are made of martensitic stainless steels, and lubricated with grease. Like most usual rolling mechanisms, smearing and jamming can occur before the theoretical fatigue lifetime, especially in poor lubrication conditions. The actuated load is carried by small contacts between the threads of the screw, the rollers and the nut. The static single contact can be described as an ellipsoid on flat contact with high contact pressure (3-4 GPa). The motion consists of rolling with spin associated with side slip (up to 10 %). The aim of this PhD work is to investigate the wear behavior for different operating and design parameters of PRS such as load, speed, slip ratio, lubrication and material structure, in order to improve behavior and lifetime of PRS. The contact is experimentally simulated by a free rolling roller loaded on a rotating disk. A specific tribometer is used to create a contact with a side slip component, i.e. perpendicular to the rolling direction. The roller rolling speed and the tangential force generated by the slip ratio are measured. Also, an optical device is set on the tribometer to make a film of the evolution of the track outside of the contact. Steel on steel wear behavior is first presented. Then, several aspects of the greased lubricated contact are studied such as the feeding mechanisms related to the specific kinematics, and susceptibility to smearing in relation with tests input parameters. The feeding mechanisms are mapped as a function of input parameters (contact pressure, rolling speed, and sliding ratio). The wear behavior of hard carbon-based coatings with and without grease is also investigated. It shows good performance for the roller-screw application. The coating lifetime is governed by a three-body wear mechanism, but the experiments also reveal a progressive cracking in the rolling direction, i.e. perpendicular to the sliding direction. Lastly, a wear mode map is proposed to illustrate the competition between the two damage modes depending on the tests input parameters. The analysis of experimental results allows us to propose ways to improve the design and the selection of materials in order to increase the behavior and the durability of PRS.

Návrh systému pro testování valivých ložisek s proměnnými parametry mazání / Development of a testing system for evaluation of rolling bearings with variable lubrication parameters

Škoviera, Jozef January 2017 (has links)
The presented diploma thesis deals with the design of a test system for rolling bearings, which allows the change of the lubrication parameters (e.g. changing of the relubrica-tion interval). In the document, the reader first learns about the meaning of lubrication of rolling bearings, the possibilities of lubricant supply to the bearing (specifically for the supply of grease) and the possibilities of dosing control. Subsequently in the document is described the present state of experimental stations for testing rolling bearings, which is available at the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design. The end of the part about current state of knowledge is also mentioned the possibility of speeding up fatigue tests. In the next part, the author describes his own solution. The result is the design of an experimental station (for option to relubricate with grease), the creation of a lubrication control platform and the creation of a basic program. Part of the work is also verification experiments and drawing documentation.
