The influence of the hidden curriculum on professional socialisation of student nurses in a military nursing context

Zägenhagen, Karen 11 1900 (has links)
The South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) Nursing College offers a four-year integrated nursing programme leading to registration as a professional nurse at the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Student nurses assume a dual role when entering the SAMHS to commence with nurse training – that of a soldier and a nurse. Because student nurses have to assume dual roles, hidden aspects of military culture may influence the professional socialisation of student nurses in one way or another. With a view to determining whether the military environment does indeed impose any influence on student nurses’ professional socialisation, this study set out to explore the multifaceted context in which these students find themselves. Given the organisational and locational complexity of the SAMHS Nursing College, its campuses and the three military hospitals in South Africa, the population was narrowed down to an accessible target population comprising nurse educators and student nurses of the SAMHS Nursing College (Main Campus). Included in the two samples were nurse educators at the SAMHS Nursing College who had at least three years’ experience as nurse educators and who were registered with the SANC as nurse educators, and student nurses registered at the SANC for the fouryear Integrated Nursing Programme and who were in their fourth year of training. A qualitative constructivist grounded theory study was conducted based on the researcher’s philosophical assumptions. The researcher made use of focus groups and critical-incident narratives to collect data. In keeping with the constructivist paradigm adopted for this study, Charmaz’s (2014) data-analysis approach was followed. Concepts derived from the qualitative data were used to develop a substantive model to create an awareness of the existence of a hidden curriculum, to guide role players through the impact of the hidden curriculum on students’ professional socialisation and to help them to understand how their contribution could improve the outcome of the professional socialisation process / Health Studies / D. On evangelizing an avatar : an empirical exploration of the expression of faith in virtual reality

Schulte, Steffen Michael 11 1900 (has links)
Mission is a central aspect of the Christian faith and much thought is given to the challenge of proclaiming the gospel in a new context or to a different people group (i.e. contextualization). In recent years, a new context has come to the forefront that has been and is being created through technology, namely virtual reality (VR). The purpose of this study is to explore how contextualization, with regards to evangelization, needs to be done in VR. The proposed thesis is that VR provides a new context in which the Christian faith is, or should be, shared in a contextualized way. Although much thought is given to the question of religion in VR, it mostly focuses on the nature of communities online. This study addresses the issue of online evangelization, which has so far received less attention. This doctoral thesis is structured after the empirical-theological praxis cycle of Faix (2007a), and the Policy Delphi Method (PDM) is the research technique used. Through the PDM, a panel of experts from different backgrounds (theologians, sociologists, and practitioners) discussed the various ways in which VR affects evangelization, the way people form their religious identity, and how contextualization could take place. The aim of this research is to contribute to the field of missiology by investigating VR as a new context in which to proclaim the Christian faith / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Pracovní strategie sester na řídích pozicích / Working strategies of nurses on manager posts

MARKOVÁ, Eva January 2013 (has links)
The thesis "Working strategies of nurses on manager posts" deals with issues of the professional role and manager position of a head nurse. With regard to changes in the area of health policy and health care providing, as well as is the relationship with the issue of professional fulfilment of women on the labour market generally, it is important to know views, ambitions, and motivations of nurses, and their working strategies on managing positions. It includes aspects of harmonizing their family and work roles, as these are the moments determining the position of most women in our working conditions to a significant extent. It is to say, managing of the nursing personnel and health care is a typical feminine position in the Czech Republic, adapting to given rules of the work organization and hierarchical structure of health institutions. The purpose of the thesis is to outline such a frame of reference, which would enable to better understand values and attitudes of head nurses. An indispensable part of this outlook is to understand, how their carriers developed, to identify their managing styles and guiding of the nursing team, as well as to map how their personal and professional roles pervade and affect each other. In this process, revealing long-term working strategies of head nurses is an important source of knowledge and at the same time, an attitudinal reflexion of these contexts by nurses themselves. Therefore, the development of the role of a nurse - manager (specifically, the head nurse and the ward sister) was described as the first item in the framework of the professional live of managing nurses; and conclusions of a series of research studies, focused on these issues, were presented. Additionally, the specificity of management in the nursing conditions was analyzed, including changes after 1989, and possibilities of education of nurses - managers. Finally, an empiric probe into the explored points at issue was carried out. Data acquired by means of semi-structured interviews with selected head nurses in faculty hospitals were integrated with the help of one of classical approaches, through so-called Grounded theory method. On basis of the data analysis, a model of professional paradigm was created, demonstrating several phases of the professional career, through which a head nurse passes, which were called for illustration: Seeking of domain, Circle (changing of nursing lines and sites), Virtue of necessity (situation, where a nurse caring of a child chooses a workplace, which enables such care), and Anchoring in the nursing branch. Then, the manager's career of the nurse unwinds form the "Anchoring in the nursing branch" phase. Life stories of head nurses, built on information from qualitative interviews, include predisposing factors for a managing position. Last but not least, it is also about some imprinting aspects from the childhood and adolescence (e.g., number of siblings, reasons for the selected study). After certain time, a nurse becomes a shift leader and a deputy ward sister, and subsequently, a ward sister and a head nurse. According to circumstances, she uses a combination of several managing styles in this position, like authoritative, democratic, and consultative. The theoretical model of professional paradigm of head nurses, construed on basis of empiric data analyses, opens a trail for further investigations, where it may be possible to examine some consequences in more detail, like the course of the professional career of nurses, their managing styles, etc. The acquired and classified evidences contribute to enriching current state of knowledge of certain segments of nursing issues. For instance, the top management of health institutions may use them in planning and implementation of some policies in the area of human resources, or educational institutions may use it for better and more accurate setting of educational concepts of future head nurses.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Going Cloud_a grounded theory of the transition of work from in-house computing to cloud computing.pdf: 7108554 bytes, checksum: beaade1f863333c52207eb25dd7917ec (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-02-26 / This study pursues the following question: how does the transition of work from in-house computing to cloud computing happens? While seeking for answers, an empirical study was carried out over one year. Its research strategy and method is grounded theory, combined with ethnography as a means for gathering empirical material. The phenomenon analyzed was named going cloud, an expression that refers to the process of shifting the work from local computing to cloud computing. The phenomenon is described, explicated and exemplified from three categories, each one regarding one temporal stage: justifying (temporal stage 1: the implementation and communication of cloud computing results in rethinking how things get done); re-mediating (temporal stage 2: rethinking how things get done results in limiting what can be done in new ways); circumscribing (temporal stage 3: limiting what can be done in new ways results in routinely doing only the managerial work in new ways). The core find is that, at the end of the transition of work from in-house computing to cloud computing, only the managerial work becomes reorganized. The study offers two original contributions to the emerging literature on cloud computing: I) it introduces ‘going cloud’ as a new substantive domain; II) offers a grounded theory, which suggests how and why only the managerial work is reorganized while the organization goes cloud. The study also offers two original contributions to the well-established literature on technology and organizing: III) it advances the theoretical model of the imbrication of human and material agencies; IV) it advances the discussion about the adoption of agential or critical realism while studying sociomateriality. The conclusions indicate how to advance knowledge about the transition from local computing to cloud computing: I) studying how this transition can result in technical attributes performing tasks that do not require expert knowledge; II) studying how organizations and people are developing criteria for deciding what kind of information may or may not go to the cloud. The main implication is to develop longitudinal studies, in order to make comparisons between the work before and after the routine use of cloud computing.

Corporate governance in the nonprofit sector : a grounded theory approach to studying the trustee board

Dexter, George January 2018 (has links)
This thesis uses a constructivist grounded theory approach to investigate nonprofit corporate governance in the UK; using data obtained from participatory observations of board and associated meetings, workshops, and unstructured elite interviews. Open codes are generated and brought together as concepts, which are then iteratively compared and grouped in open categories. These categories are then reassembled using the paradigm model into five axial codes: the clash of orthodoxies; clash of motivations; regulator versus board power; clash of rationalities; and effective board duality. A dialectical approach is then used to create the core category of the ‘clash of neoliberal and public service world views which exists at every level of the nonprofit sector’. This core category is analysed in terms of the subordinate contradictions: at an environmental level - regulatory power versus sector power; at board level - accountability; the SMT; board practices and rituals (professionalism, actual and symbolic authority, boards meetings as theatre, and ethical standards); the concept of challenge as an expression of power relations; and rationality and decision making; and at the individual level - motivations of directors, moral duty and social purpose, social group membership, identification, credibility and trust. The substantive theory is then situated within psychology, governance, and corporate governance theories. The contribution made by the thesis are identified as the: use of ethnography to describe the inner workings of the board; creation of a model of nonprofit corporate governance; identification of the importance of political, ideological, regulatory, and ethical contexts; and concept of power, and the senior management team as a component of the board. Further research is suggested into: (i) a comparison of corporate governance in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors; (ii) challenge within the nonprofit culture; and (iii) the SMT as a major player in governance.

New normal : a grounded theory study of reconciling change in appearance and function for men with head and neck cancer

Rennie, Caroline January 2016 (has links)
HNC incidence and mortality is greater in men and is associated with high risk behaviours and social deprivation. HNC is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages requiring multi-modality treatment which can have a significant impact on appearance and function. Gender can influence health behaviours yet research into male experiences of cancer has primarily focussed on prostate cancer and HNC is an area which is under investigated. The aim of this study was to explore how men with HNC experience appearance and functional change in the first 12 months following diagnosis. Grounded theory methodology (GT) was chosen as the overall purpose of GT is the generation of theory from the data which has explanatory power and advances the understanding of social and psychological phenomena. Retrospective semi-structured interviews were performed with 12 men who were 12 to 24 months post-diagnosis. Key components of GT practice used were simultaneous data collection and analysis, constructing analytic categories from the data, constant comparison, memo-writing and theoretical sampling. Three categories emerged from the data which were inter-related: normalising change; “under siege”: getting through treatment; and reclaiming self. The core category was reconciling change; a new normal which reflects the social and psychological processes involved in accommodating and assimilating change in appearance and function for men with HNC. The substantive theory provides insight into how men with HNC prioritise function and actively distance themselves from concerns regarding appearance. Furthermore, it identifies men who are at risk of social anxiety and isolation due to multiple changes or body incompetence. This study builds on theories of masculinity, body image and disfigurement. The substantive theory developed provides health and social care professionals with new knowledge to support clinical practice and improve care provision.

It develops within the theoretical framework, discussions on the context of the Creative Economy, Creative Industries, creative environment, organizational paradigm of Creative Economy, music as a creative environment and business, design and dynamics of Strategy as Practice and conjecture about the contextualism and other epistemological currents. The study is shaped as an exploratory and descriptive research, utilizing the qualitative method and being characterized as a Grounded Theory. A total of four musical groups of different styles, markets and areas of operation with over ten years of activity were surveyed. The Grounded Theory and simple observation methods were used for both data collection and analysis. The software ATLAS.ti. was used to help with the analysis. The research shows that the bands perceive the specialized expertise in the virtual social media as a strategic differentiator. It also shows that the groups nourish individuation and the differentiation in their relationship with the individual. Finally, it validates that these organizations get teams involved and value the dynamic design of their routines in strategic decision making, paying attention to a strategic social bias. Strategy and Creative Practice is the main category that emerged from the data. This category is explained through the three aforementioned results. It shows that organizations that are part of the Creative Economy perform simultaneously and dynamically creative and strategic making at both artistic and managerial levels. The theory created is validated by the principles of degree of coherence, functionality, relevance, flexibility, density and integration, and it is inserted in the contextualism principle, which points the knowledge as related to the context in which it is placed and discussed.

Caracterização da integração entre as áreas funcionais na perspectiva de tríades : estudos de caso em organizações industriais

Seno, João Paulo 15 May 2014 (has links)
The differentiation between functional areas is necessary for organizations to be able to meet the challenges posed by the environment. This same differentiation, however, requires the functional integration for organization can operate to achieve their goals and use their resources efficient. This paper uses the perspective of triads, an approach of Social Psychology that studies groups of subjects for the analysis of phenomena associated with the relationships between functional areas of an organization. This approach has been used recently in the study of the relationship between organizations in supply chains. Multiple case studies was conducted in three industrial companies in the region of Uberlandia (MG) and six categories of phenomena that help to understand the relationship between functional areas were identified: Urgency, Capacity vs. Demand, Motivation, Challenge and Respect. Existing theories that adopt the perspective of triads, the Theory of Balance of Heider, Theory of Structural Holes, by Simmel and Theory of Coalitions by Caplow were also used for data analysis. Seven propositions were made regarding the phenomena associated with functional integration from the perspective of triads that can contribute to future studies in this research field.
