Batallas ciudadanas, comunidades del margen. Las Narrativas de Diamela Eltit y Guadalupe Santa Cruz

Chapple Clavijo, Juan January 2005 (has links)

José Guadalupe Posada: um estudo da sociedade mexicana pela ilustração / José Guadalupe Posada: a study of the mexican society by illustration

Camila Pôrto de Aguiar 30 March 2015 (has links)
This dissertation presents the transformations in Mexican political culture of the late 19th century to the early 20th century, aiming to focus on the imagery collection of one of the greatest Mexican illustrators: José Guadalupe Posada. The theoretical-methodological procedures were guided up by the contributions of cultural history and documentary sources, mostly illustrations, which were found in digital public archives and libraries. The illustrator lived in Mexico between 1852 and 1913, being considered one of the responsible artists for the strengthening of the graphic arts in Latin America, besides standing out as one of the most important intellectuals of his time and eyewitness of the events that led to the Mexican Revolution. Through the illustrations, it was possible to analyze the historical context of Mexico over the government of Porfirio Díaz. Furthermore, the political cultures that guided the country's path were highlighted: the first, between the half and the end of the 19th century and the other, in the first decade of the 20th century. The works of José Guadalupe Posada are one of the richest historical sources about the period, which have contributed to the spread of ideas and political values in Mexico, during the Porfiriato.

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: From Impossible Angles Towards Strategic Ones: Narratives of Death, Life, and Disability in La Muerte me Da and El Huesped The glamour of single-handedly overcoming adversity, sidestepping obstacles, or defying the odds makes for great mystery or adventure fiction, but fails to do justice (poetic or otherwise) to lives that are both physically and conceptually "marked" by more complex challenges. From a theoretical view, a similar desire to escape or maintain the perceived "dividing line" between fact and fiction, nature and nurture, mind and body, is confronted by a diverse set of human experiences, all of which have come to be defined, and continue to define themselves, along both sides of such a divide. Disability, typically viewed as an "emerging" branch of literary and cultural critique, is perhaps the most pervasive. Hidden under the covert language of the "grotesque", "monstrous", "doppelgänger", "freak", "eccentric" or "queer", disability has historically represented something other than itself. Two texts that attest to both the real and imagined possibilities of resignification and new modes of articulation surrounding disability are La muerte me da (2007) by Cristina Rivera Garza and El huésped (2006) by Guadalupe Nettel. From different points of departure, both texts offer a narrative approximation towards the disabled mind, body, and perceptual experience. In ways that are both similar and different, these narratives question one's perceived access to that which is otherwise understood to be the physically and conceptually "inaccessible" or "illegible" space of disability. Such approximations towards, and articulations of, the disability experience are processes that move, largely unnoticed, both within and beyond texts. As this construct continues to transform itself from both within and outside itself, disability acquires intellectual and practical value while requiring the "experts" in fields beyond the narrow scope of medicine, education, and rehabilitation to (re)consider their own approaches to, and apprehensions of, disability in order to redefine what or who is accessible or viable for literary and cultural debate. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Spanish 2014

Loyola Contreras, Alejandra Andrea January 2010 (has links)

Faith and politics: The socio-political discourses engaged by Mexican ex-voto paintings from the nineteenth-century and beyond.

Hamman, Amy 05 1900 (has links)
The Universalis Ecclesiae of 1508 authorized Spanish colonization of the Americas in return for the conversion of native populations to Christianity. From its inception therefore, the Mexican nation lived an alliance between Church and State. This alliance promoted the transfer of Castilian Catholicism to American shores. Catholic practices, specifically the ex-voto tradition, visualize this intermingling of religion and politics. The ex-voto is a devotional painting that expresses gratitude to a religious figure for his/her intervention in a moment of peril. It is commissioned by the devotee as a means of direct communication to the divine. This project analyzes 40 Mexican ex-votos for their reflection of political issues in Mexico. I assert that the Mexican ex-votos engage discussions of social politics. To support this argument, visualizations of socio-political discourses such as the Virgin of Guadalupe as a national religious symbol, police action and economic disparity were examined.

The Virgin of Guadalupe Comes to Mississippi: Social Stressors and Ways of Coping Among Hispanic Im/Migrants

Read, Mary Rebecca 08 August 2009 (has links)
This mixed-methods study uses ritual analysis, key informant interviews, and a semi-structured questionnaire to explore stressors and coping among Hispanic im/migrants to rural Mississippi. The study applies Turner’s model of ritual analysis to the procession of la Virgen de Guadalupe for insight into the values, concerns, actions, and motivations of the community. Results from ritual analysis suggest the precession of la Virgen de Guadalupe unites the multi-national community and empowers the participants through their faith in God and la Virgen de Guadalupe. Results from the semi-structured questionnaire identify stressors among the Hispanic community relating to separation from family and friends, job shortage, transportation barriers, and language barriers.
