The Administration of Don Heath Morris at Abilene Christian College

Cosgrove, Owen 08 1900 (has links)
This study is concerned with the administrative and educational contributions of Don Heath Morris to Abilene Christian College. The aim of this investigation is to ascertain the purposes of those who founded Abilene Christian College and to study the effects of the philosophy and work of Don H. 'Morris on the school. Attention is also given to the changes that occurred in Morris' philosophy as he adjusted to the vicissitudes of a growing college during a period when American higher education was making dramatic changes. Perhaps the outstanding quality of Don H. Morris as a college administrator was his persistence and single-mindedness in pressing for the achieving of the school's goals. He had the ability to see a goal clearly and to work toward it tirelessly. He never allowed the burdens of office that might have deterred a less committed and determined person to come between him and his devotion to the purposes of the school. Morris' basic philosophy of Christianity and Christian education was matured and intensified during his years at Abilene Christian College. His life was fulfilled in his work at Abilene Christian College, and Abilene Christian College bears the lasting impression of his personality and philosophy.

Vaccination Policies of Utah Family Practice Clinics

Kohler, Levi R. 01 September 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to collect information regarding healthcare worker (HCW) vaccination policies in Utah family practice clinics. Data sources: The study was conducted in Utah family practice clinics in the most densely populated counties in the state and was a cross-sectional descriptive design. Data were collected from 155 family practice clinic managers. Analyses included frequencies and percentages for quantitative items and a content analysis for open-ended items. Conclusions: HCWs are employed in environments where infectious diseases can be easily spread from person to person, thus, vaccinations can be instrumental in protecting the health of HCWs and patients alike. In Utah, 56.8% of family practice clinics had either no vaccination policy for HCWs or had a policy with no consequences for noncompliance. Utah family practice clinics need to implement changes to create and maintain HCW vaccination policies. Implications for practice: Nurse practitioners can be leaders and change agents by working with their county and state health departments to create state-wide policies that mirror the position statements from the American Nurses Association and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

A Population-based Evaluation of the Delivery of Care for People Living with HIV in Ontario

Kendall, Claire Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
Background: Health care needs to evolve to meet the needs of people living with HIV as they age and become a more diverse population. For HIV and other conditions, physician specialty and experience are often positively associated with disease-specific outcomes but negatively associated with primary care outcomes. The objectives of this thesis were to: 1) assess comorbidity prevalence among people living with HIV in Ontario; 2) describe the type and extent of care by physician specialty; 3) use a theoretical shared primary/specialist care typology to characterize this care; 4) measure the quality of care delivered related to this typology; and 5) assess the independent effect of family physician HIV experience. Methods: Population-based data were used to describe a cohort of 14,282 individuals living with HIV in Ontario. Health care visits to this cohort were categorized by physician specialty, physician HIV experience, and HIV-related versus HIV-unrelated care. A theoretically-based typology of care was developed by linking patients to usual family physicians and to HIV specialists with 5 possible patterns of care. Prevention and chronic disease management adherence, antiretroviral (ART) prescribing, and health care utilization were compared across typology models using multivariable hierarchical logistic regression analyses. The independent effect of family physician experience was also examined. Results: People with HIV had significant comorbidity. Family physicians provided the majority of care. Five patterns of care were described: exclusively primary care (45.4%); specialist-dominated co-management (30.7%); family physician-dominated co-management (10.1%); low engagement (8.6%); and exclusively specialist care (5.3%). After adjustment, HIV patients in exclusively specialist care had lower odds of colorectal cancer screening but higher odds of receiving ART. Odds of having an emergency department visit did not differ among models. Among HIV patients seeing only family physicians, those linked to family physicians with high HIV experience were significantly more likely to receive ART than those with lower HIV experience. Discussion: People with HIV in Ontario have substantial comorbidity. A typology of shared care between family physicians and HIV specialists had a strong influence on the quality of care delivered. These findings have important policy and practice implications and support emerging evidence that multi-specialty expertise is required to address the care needs of this population.

Health Information Barriers, Weight Status, and Health Behaviors among Cancer Survivors: Exploring the Moderating Effects of Race and Ethnicity

Barinas, Jennifer L. 16 April 2019 (has links)
There is an increasing need for research addressing the health concerns faced in cancer survivorship. Research has indicated that racial and ethnic minority cancer survivors are at increased risk for negative health outcomes, and some findings suggest that health literacy may play a role. Yet, few studies have explored how relations among heath information barriers, weight status, and health behaviors may differ by race and ethnicity in cancer survivors. Objectives: 1) To explore whether health information barriers are associated with weight status, cigarette use, and alcohol use among cancer survivors, 2) To explore the moderating role of race and ethnicity on the relationships among barriers to health information, weight status, cigarette use, and alcohol use among cancer survivors. Method: The current study involved secondary analysis of the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data from Louisiana. Results: Bivariate analyses revealed racial and ethnic minority survivors were more likely to report difficulties understanding health-related information. Regression analyses showed that having greater difficulty understanding information from health professionals was associated with higher BMI; however, none of the three health information barriers were associated with either smoking or alcohol use after controlling for demographic variables. In the present study, the causality assumption for moderation was not met, and for this reason analyses were not conducted to test the moderating effect of race/ethnicity. Conclusion: Findings suggest health literacy interventions targeting obesity may help improve health outcomes for cancer survivors, and minimize racial and ethnic disparities in health literacy.

Sulfur Isotope Abundances and Base Metal Zoning in the Heath Steele B-1 Orebody, Newcastle, New Brunswick

Lusk, John 01 1900 (has links)

S^32/S^34 ratios have been determined between some coexisting sulfides from the Heath Steele B-1 orebody and five other stratiform deposits in the Bathurst-Newcastle area, New Brunswick, and in crushed ore samples and pyrites from three across deposit profiles in the B-1 orebody. Zn, Cu, Pb and Ag abundances have been established across the orebody. Fractionations of S^32/S^34 ratios between coexisting sulfides have been determined in heating experiments at temperatures of 350 to 500°C and isotope effects measured in aqueous precipitation and exchange experiments at 25°C. S^32/S^34 fractionations between given coexisting sulfides from all the sulfide deposits are found to show only small variations. Isotope exchange is generally rapid in dry sulfide systems. Metal sulfides in aqueous solutions are slightly enriched in S^32 relative to the H2S with which they precipitate or communicate. It is concluded that the sulfide deposits have been regionally metamorphosed. The origins that have been proposed for the deposits so far are discussed and a model is suggested to explain the sulfur isotope and base metal abundances in the B-1 orebody.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Spatial Pattern Analysis of Tree Species Distribution in a Central Appalachian Upland Heath Barren

Goeke Dee, Gretchen Elise 26 August 2020 (has links)
The spatial pattern of plants reflects biotic and abiotic factors, including interactions with surrounding environmental conditions and other plants. Appalachian heath systems are presently understudied regarding spatial point pattern research, despite representing a unique and biologically valuable ecosystem. In this study, we characterized the spatial pattern of three tree species distributions in the upland heath barrens on Cabin Mountain in Canaan Valley, West Virginia through fieldwork, statistical modeling, and the use of geographical information systems (GIS). The research objectives were to: 1) quantify the global and local spatial patterns of trees to infer biotic process, and 2) identify how tree spatial pattern varies with selected biophysical variables, including ground curvature and topographic wetness index, to understand potential relationships between ambient conditions and spatial pattern. The spatial statistics, Ripley's K-function and nearest neighbor analysis, presented a series of different interaction types reflected across size-growth classes and species where the null hypothesis was rejected for some pairs and supported in others. The selected biophysical variables had no significant relationship to spatial pattern at the site. These findings suggest a range of both intraspecific and interspecific interactions are taking place in the heath barrens of Cabin Mountain, where significant levels of facilitation are occurring among encroaching red maple and striped maple, while red spruce is in competition with both species of maple, and that relationships are formed outside the influence of topographic characteristics of the site. / Master of Science / The spatial pattern of plants reflects biotic and abiotic factors, including interactions with surrounding environmental conditions and other plants. Appalachian heath barrens are presently understudied in regard to spatial point pattern research, despite representing a unique and biologically valuable ecosystem. In this study, we characterized the spatial pattern of three tree species in the red spruce heath barrens on Cabin Mountain in Canaan Valley, West Virginia through fieldwork, statistical modeling, and the use of geographical information systems (GIS). The research objectives were to: 1) quantify demographics and the spatial pattern of trees to assess for ongoing plant interaction, and 2) understand whether tree spatial pattern is affected by selected biophysical variables, including ground curvature and topographic wetness index, to understand potential relationships between environmental conditions and spatial pattern. The results suggested a range of interactions were occurring across the plot, intraspecies, different species-pairs, and size-growth classes. Most notably, encroaching striped and red maple species, had a positive relationship, while red spruce and both maple species had largely competitive relationships. Both topographic wetness index and ground curvature had no significant relationship to spatial pattern at the site. These findings suggest a range of both intraspecific and interspecific interactions are taking place in the heath barrens of Cabin Mountain, indicating the possibility of conversion from red spruce heath barrens to deciduous forest, that this pattern is formed outside the influence of topographic characteristics of the site.

Validating Boyness: How Art Education Allows Male Adolescent Students a Space for Authenticity, Vulnerability, Empathy, and Connection

Behlke-McFarland, Stephanie 12 April 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines societal norms and unwritten rules for boys as they mature. It is hypothesized that most boys deal with emotional suppression or dissociation in varying degrees of severity due to traumas during their developmental years. This dissociation creates an inability to express their own emotions adequately and therefore affects their ability to empathize with others. A lack of vulnerability may also be a common challenge among boys society still considers vulnerability weakness. This pattern continues into adulthood and is then perpetuated through posterity and future generations. This thesis explores through a qualitative case study how using art integration in an English classroom, in tandem with teaching a novel written by Patrick Ness and illustrated by Jim Kay, and an emotional education curriculum produced by Yale's Center for Emotions, can give male adolescent students safe opportunities to reassociate with their emotional selves and emotional expressions. Methodologies I used in addition to qualitative case study are interviews of adult men, lyrical sociology in the form of vignettes, and inspiration from an Indigenous methodology of bringing the relationship between researcher and research to the forefront.
