Féminisme matérialiste et queer : politique(s) d'un constructivisme radical / Materialist and queer feminism : politics of a radical constructivismNoyé, Sophie 23 June 2016 (has links)
This research addresses the pluralization of feminist emancipation’s forms in France since the mid-1990s in light of the conflict between materialist and queer feminisms. We have taken as our starting point the hypothesis that the linkage between these two political theoretic discourses is possible since it actually takes place in the « queer-feminist » movement’s militant practices. We argue that this combination is meaningful and deserves to be better theorized since it carries with it a message of radicalism and inclusiveness. The alliance of the two approaches questions the definition of the feminist subject, and especially the formulation of a political unity which is not essentialist. We analyze the extent to which both the (counter-)hegemonic approach and the project of a radical, agonistic and plural democracy provide us with tools to answer this issue. Our argument runs as follow : the discourse of radical constructivism that results from the union between materialistic and queer feminisms should develop a hegemonic strategy regarding the conception of the political subject for two reasons. First, this strategy takes into account the plurality of the contingency of the social realm. Second, it aims at unifying and stabilizing the political « Us » in order to reverse the various material domination’s manifestations. Such a constructivist theory thinks of the political realm as an institution of the social realm and develops an understanding of politics as the organization of conflict in a situation of undecidability.

Narrative and soap opera : a study of selected South African soap operasMarx, Hannelie 19 May 2008 (has links)
This thesis is situated within the context of post-apartheid, post-1994 South Africa. Considering that South Africa only recently entered its second decade of democracy, it is not surprising that, within the context of the “New South Africa”, new identities and myths are continuously being constructed. It thus follows that the construction of identities is a contentious issue within South Africa today. The premise that serves as point of departure for this thesis is that narratives contribute to the construction of identities. It is argued that there exists no single, absolute or static identity and that both personal and collective identities are endlessly being negotiated and renegotiated. Within the context of the “New South-Africa” a variety of new voices are being heard and a variety of new narratives are being voiced. Consider as a case in point the far-reaching stories told in the hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The far-reaching political, economic and cultural paradigm shifts South Africa has undergone in the recent past also manifest in the production of meaning in popular visual culture and, more specifically, in the undeniably popular South African soap opera. In the scope of this thesis it is argued that South African soap opera constitute one possible South African narrative and consequently that South African soap opera may be instrumental in the construction of the new identities referred to earlier. The first section of this thesis is devoted to a literature overview comprising an overview of seminal sources on Cultural Studies, the South African context, narrative, identity, soap opera, gender and the other. This is done in order to situate the thesis within the context of Cultural Studies and also to achieve an awareness of the literature and research relevant to this study. Initially the thesis focuses broadly on narrative, its characteristics and the role narrative plays in the construction of identities. Here the theories of Paul Ricouer serve as a basis on which narrative is defined and analysed. Important concepts that come to bear in the relationship between narrative and identity include time, story, history and imagination. In examining narrative I come to the conclusion that narrative can be embodied and that a narrative body implies gender. It is argued that narrative may be gendered as feminine, and consequently that it constitutes some kind of other – in this case, other to the masculine. Although Edward Said’s Orientalism is acknowledged as the unofficial origin of the concept of the Other, and mention is made of Simoné de Beauvoir, it is essentially the concept of the other as theorized by Luce Irigaray that is seminal to this thesis. The focus is narrowed down to soap opera narrative which is again argued to be a feminine, but also female, narrative for a variety of reasons. Soap opera narrative is othered to various hegemonic orders the most important of which is western masculine narrative. An argument is made for the potential of this narrative of the other to give a voice to the other and consequently pose a site where dominant identities and hegemonic orders may be (re)negotiated. The final part of this thesis is devoted to applying all of the above to South African soap opera narrative. Concrete examples from four South African soap operas (Egoli – Plek van Goud/Place of Gold, Isidingo – the need, Generations and 7de Laan) are used to substantiate the argument that South African soap opera may be regarded as other and consequently that it creates a site where new South African identities are created and old identities are being negotiated. / Dissertation (MA (Afrikaans))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Afrikaans / unrestricted

Reflections on the Subtitling and Dubbing of Anime: The Translation of Gender in Perfect Blue, a Film by Kon SatoshiJosephy, Daniel Enrique January 2017 (has links)
Perfect Blue is an anime (Japanese animation) film directed by Kon Satoshi released in 1997. The film revolves around a female idol (a pop star) named Mima who quits her career as an idol to become an actress. She gradually loses her mind, as the pressures from her acting career, her managers, fans and a stalker catch up to her. Perfect Blue touches on the blurring line between fiction and reality, the objectification of women (and idols) as mere products, and the role of women in the idol industry. It is also a stark critique of the hegemonic masculinity and the gender roles that are imposed on women in Japanese society. This thesis presents anime as an important pop culture phenomenon with a massive influence worldwide. The thesis examines the gender stereotypes propagated by this phenomenon and proposes a that Kon’s work is different compared to other anime. This work compares how gender roles are portrayed in the different versions: The Japanese original and the US English subtitles and dubbing. Methodologically, the analysis relies on close observation of the use of the Japanese first and second person pronouns and sentence-final particles in the characters’ language, since “the use of these features is known to be highly gender-dependent” (Hiramoto 2013, 55).
This study comes to the conclusion that the subtitles and the dubbing provide a relatively close rendering of gender of the Japanese text, even if the linguistic resources of English do not allow for the translation of gendered Japanese pronouns and sentence-final particles. This means that the subtitles and dubbings maintain the feminist message Kon wanted to give in his film. The study concludes by stressing the importance of taking into account the use of specific pronouns and sentence-final particles when translating Japanese, as these particles are gender-loaded. It also emphasises the importance of being critical of anime’s hegemonic masculinity, and argues that Kon goes against hegemony by portraying a strong and independent female character.

"They Don't Make'em Like They Used To": Cultural Hegemony and the Representation of White Masculinity in Recent U.S. CinemaSchneider, Matthew 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to illuminate how white male hegemony over women and minorities is inscribed through the process of film representation. A critical interrogation of six film texts produced over the last decade yields pertinent examples of how the process of hegemonic negotiation works to maintain power for the ever changing modes of postindustrial masculinity. Through the process of crisis and recuperation the central male characters in these films forge new, more acceptable attributes of masculinity that allow them to retain their centrality in the narrative.

A principal
The emergence of the Internet represented an information revolution, opening a space for the
flourishing of discussions that break with the dominant powers, and for the spread of groups
that do not have their place of expression in traditional media (TV, radio and press). An
example of this are the “new evangelicals”, identified in the report of the magazine Época of
August 2010 as a movement emerging from various segments of the Brazilian Evangelical
Church in response to the growth of Neopentecostalism and to the institutionalization of
religion. Through digital media, these Christians denounce and criticize the scandals of the
Brazilian Evangelicalism and they propose a return to the “pure and simple gospel”. This
religious and mediatic phenomenon motivated the realization of this research, whose objects
are the major Brazilian “Protestant” blogs, so called because of the religious movement from
which they come (Protestantism), as well as for its critical and reformist character (to protest).
The main purpose of this study is to understand how is the appropriation of the new
communication technologies by individuals and/or groups within the evangelical circles,
which have counter-hegemonic features. This work also contributes to the analysis of some
relevant additional issues: 1) the complex roots of Protestantism in Brazilian soil and its main
branches; 2) ruptures and continuities in the flourishing of reformist religious phenomena; 3)
the current “spring” of the social movements, and the use of the internet as an alternative
media, of resistance and counter-hegemony.

Objetiva portanto analisar as particularidades e tendências dessa política social no âmbito
realizadas no período referido.
estando implicados nesse processo tanto a utilização do potencial dessa política

Transformative Learning and Ideological Shifts: Implications for Pedagogy for the PrivilegedJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: The pace of segregation of races continues to increase as the gap between wealthy people, and the rest of the human race, increases. Technological advances in human communication ironically decrease human communication as people choose news and social media sites that feed their ideological frames. Bridging the sociopolitical gap is increasingly difficult. Further, privileged hegemonic forces exert pressure to maintain the status quo at the expense of greater humanity. Despite this grave account, some members of the privileged hegemony have moved away from their previous adherence to it and emerged as activists for marginalized populations.
Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Pedagogy for the Privileged, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Transformative Learning Theory and Critical White Studies, this study asks the question: what factors lead to an ideological shift?
Fifteen participants agreed to an in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interview. There were four main themes that emerged. Most participants experienced significant childhood challenges as well as segregated environments. Additionally, they possessed personality traits of curiosity and critical thinking which left them at odds with their family members; and finally, each experienced exposure to new environments and new people. Most notably, in an attempt to satisfy their curiosity and to remedy the disconnect between the imposed family values and their own internal inclinations, most actively sought out disorienting dilemmas that would facilitate an ideological shift. This journey typically included copious reading, critically analyzing information and, mostly importantly, immersion in new environments.
The goal of this study was to understand which factors precipitate an ideological shift in the hope of using the data to create effective interventions that bridge ideological gaps. It was revealed that some of the initiative for this shift is innate, and therefore unreachable. However, exposure to disorienting dilemmas successfully caused an ideological shift. Critically, this research revealed that it is important to identify those individuals who possess this innate characteristic of curiosity and dissatisfaction with the status quo and create opportunities for them to be exposed to new people, information and environments. This will likely lead to a shift from White hegemonic adherent to an emerging advocate for social justice. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Justice Studies 2020

Blinded by Angels, Monsters, Mad Women, or Mothers : The Struggling Break from Patriarchy in Romeo and Juliet and Pride and PrejudiceMunde, Sue, Satvinder January 2021 (has links)
This study attempts to shed light on the psychological mindsets of two minor femalecharacters in two fictional stories, Lady Capulet, the mother in Romeo and Juliet (1597), and Mrs Bennet, the mother in Pride and Prejudice (1813). The stories are set centuries apart by two different English authors. Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare and was published in 1597, whilst Pride and Prejudice was written by Jane Austen and was published in 1813. This essay will examine why the authors show the mothers with characteristic attitudes and habitual behaviours that inherently portray them as women affected by patriarchy. Lady Capulet is revealed as a mother who supports her husband in the arrangement of her daughter’s marriage, but as a mother who punishes her daughter for refusing to marry a man arranged by the father. Mrs Bennet is portrayed as a mother driven by materialistic gains, whose ultimate obsession is to find men to marry her daughters, a mother who also punishes her daughter for refusing to marry a man picked out by her. The authors are well renowned, and both tales are amongst the greatest romantic love stories of all times. Nevertheless, these stories do not support the feminist cause for equality of the sexes but instead create a reality of a society that was essentially patriarchal. Psychoanalytical feminist literary criticism reveals that the authors were deeply influenced by a patriarchal culture, which they have reflected and created in the mother characterisations of their stories.
