Parasitic helminths of 15 undulated tinamous (Crypturellus undulatus), from Mato Grosso do Sul State; 15 spotted nothuras (Nothura maculosa) and 15 small-billed tinamous (Crypturellus parvirostris) from São Paulo State were investigated. The helminths morphology was studied and, after that, descriptors of helminth infection, such as prevalence, mean intensity and abundance were elaborated. The fourty-five birds were parasitized by 15 species of nematodes, with a total worm burden of 2,851. The undulated tinamous showed 1,526 worms of nine species: Ornithostrongylus almeidai, Strongyloides oswaldoi, Subulura strongylina, Heterakis alata, Heterakis valvata, Odontoterakis multidentata, Tetracheilonema quadrilabiatum, Cyrnea apterycis and Procyrnea buckleyi. The higher value was of C. apterycis, representing 48.0% of the total number of worms and 73.3% of prevalence. From spotted nothuras were obtained 841 nematodes of three species: Subulura olympioi, T. quadrilabiatum and Procyrnea cameroni. S. olympioi showed the highest values, with percentage of 92.3% of the total number of worms. From small-billed tinamous, were obtained 484 worms of six species: S. olympioi, S. strongylina, Strongyloides avium, Lutznema lutzi, Heterakis gallinarum and Procyrnea crypturi n. sp., this last one described in this study. S. olympioi showed the highest values of mean intensity (28.1), abundance (18.7) and percentage of total number of worms (58.1%).

This study aimed to evaluate the composition, structure and diversity of helminth communities components of Notothenia coriiceps may vary on a local and temporal in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Fish were collected at five different locations named as Arctowiski, Ipanema, Punta Ullman, Refuge I, and Smok Point, totaling 126 individuals. Once captured, fish were necropsied and the parasites found were collected, quantified, identified and fixed. All fish were infected with at least one species of helminth parasites. Of the 13 helminth species found, five were larvae (2 cestodes, 2 nematodes and 1 acanthocephalan) and eight adults (five digenean and three acanthocephalans). The dominant species and with greater intensities at all sites were adults of Macvicaria georgiana, Aspersentis megarhynchus and cistacanth of Corynosoma sp., with emphasis on Arctowiski and Smok Point places. The species G. bowersi, Pseudoterranova sp., Contracaecum sp., Metacanthocephalus johnstoni and Tetraphyllidae larvae showed a relatively similar pattern of infection. The local species richness ranged from 9-11 species, followed by 13 and 11 in the first and second summer, while the wealth of the entire bay (regional) species was 13. The diversity index and evenness had little variation among locations, while the bay (regional) and between the years virtually had no differences. Communities based on diversity components showed little variation among the areas studied, demonstrating that the helminth species are distributed almost equally in Admiralty Bay. Despite the distance between the sites have from 2 to 9 km, this does not influence this diversity, but to be a key factor for the variations in the levels of infection among... Atividade anti-helmíntica in vitro e in vivo de compostos fitoquímicos para o controle de nematóides gastrointestinais de ovinos /

Katiki, Luciana Morita. January 2011 (has links)
Oils were analysed by chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The oils presented high anthelmintic activity by comparison of LC50, being C .schoenanthus is the most active. The oils were tested withWistar rats artificially infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis at 1.5 mL/kg and 2.3 mL/kg. The essential oils didn't present a significant anthelmintic effect measured by fecal egg count and worm burden when compared to albendazole. The oil of C. schoenanthus had the best anthelmintic activity against sheep trichostrongylids and were evaluated in vivo in lambs artificially infected with Haemonchus contortus at doses of 0.2 and 0.4 mL/kg. Its activity were evaluated by fecal egg count and worm burden and the toxicity evaluated by kidney and liver profile. C. schoenanthus did not show toxic effects at the doses tested and although without significant reduction in parasite infection, it led to a higher packed cell volume and total serum protein and small reduction in larval development in feces. An improved methodology of in vitro test employing the free living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans raised in sterile liquid medium was described as well the toxicity to the major solvents used in preparation of plant extracts / Orientador: Alessandro Francisco Talamini do Amarante / Coorientador: Ana Carolina de Souza Chagas / Coorientador: Jorge Freire da Silva Ferreira / Banca: Michiko Sakate / Banca: Helder Louvandini / Banca: Regina Kiomi Takahira / Banca: Cecília José Veríssimo / Doutor

The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare efficiency of three diagnosis techniques and cost benefits of four strategic control measures against helminths of naturally parasitized sheep on a farm with modest technology. 48 ewes were selected, predominantly crosses of Santa Inês and Dorper breeds, at reproductive age, with average counts of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) superior to 400 detected by the McMaster method. Therefore, collection of fecal samples and evaluation of ocular conjunctiva were conducted every 14 days for performing the Mini-FLOTAC, McMaster and FAMACHA© techniques. Animals were divided in four experimental groups and treated strategically. In GI, treatment was performed on animals which obtained EPG counts superior to 1000 on the Mini-FLOTAC test. Treatment at GII followed similar propositions to GI, but was based on the McMaster test. GIII consisted of treating all sheep at 56-day intervals. Animals at GIV were dewormed only when presenting FAMACHA© degrees 3, 4 or 5, in two evaluations. For comparison, all three diagnosis techniques were repeatedly conducted in all groups. In order to calculate costs, expenses with product acquisition and treatments, as well as expenditure with laboratorial exams and other fact... Além disso, o nematódeo Pterygodermatites (Paucipectines) andyra n. sp. foi descrita como uma nova espécie / Brazil has one of the highest diversities of chiropteran of the world, however despite the large number of species distributed throughout the national territory, little is known about some aspects of the biology of these mammals. Researches related to parasitic fauna of these animals, especially helminths, are still scarce in the country. Thus, the present study aimed to identify the helminth fauna of bats, from Midwest Region of São Paulo State. For this, biometric and morphological analyzes were performed in the different groups of helminths, collected during the necropsy of 340 bats of various species, previously collected by Municipal Disease Control Services of this region for rabies epidemiological surveillance. Twelve of helminths were identified, which eight were nematodes, three of digeneans and one of cestodes Six species of helminths analyzed had new host records in the Neotropical region and five in Brazil. Two species were recorded for the first time in the country and three in the state of São Paulo. Also, the nematode Pterygodermatites (Paucipectines) andyra n. sp. was described as a new species

Zucatto, Anaíza Simão. January 2013 (has links)
A nPCR revelou positividade de 15% e o sequenciamento foi possível em 19 amostras, com detecção das espécies: C. xiaoi em 15 amostras, C. ubiquituim em três, e C. meleagridis em uma amostra, sendo estas duas últimas consideradas espécies zoonóticas / Abstract:The objective of this research was to determine the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites and molecularly characterize the species of Cryptosporidium spp. in stool samples from lambs under one year old in the city of Alambari, São Paulo. / To investigate the immune response and physiopathology of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections in Santa Inês lambs, thirty sheep were grouped into 10 classes of three animals each according to their liveweight. From each class, one animal was randomly selected to constitute the group artificially infected with 2500 T. colubriformis larvae three times every week for 13 weeks and fed ad libitum; another animal included the non-infected group fed with the same quantity consumed by the infected animal of the same class on the previous day; and one third animal constituted the non-infected group fed ad libitum. Leftovers were daily weighed to assess food consumption for each lamb. Every week, the animals were weighed and blood and fecal samples were collected for hematological, immunological and coproparasitological tests. At the end of this study, lambs were euthanized to detect worm burden and collect intestinal mucus and tissue samples for histopathological and immunological analyses. The immune response partially prevented the establishment of infective larvae in infected lambs. However, there was a reduction in the productive performance of these animals independently of their worm burden. The Infected Group had the worst feed conversion (88.81 ± 21.19 g in body weight for each 1000 g food consumed), this it was significantly lower (P<0.01) than that of the other two experimental groups. Deleterious effect in the lambs were due to pathological changes caused by adult nematodes in the intestinal mucosa and to immunopathological changes resultant of the contact with infective larvae. The high nutrient demand for the development and maintenance of the immune response and the repair of damaged tissues during infections also contributes in the low performance presented infected animals.

(16,9%), Toxocara canis (8,7%), Tnchuns vulpis (7,1%), Isospora spp. (3,5%), Sarcocystís spp. (2,7%) e Dipy!idium caninum (2,4%). / The sedimentation and flotation procedures for concentration of fecal specimens and the commercial device TF were used, in an epidemiological investigation of gastrointestinal parasites of dogs in São Paulo state. Fecal samples from 129 stray dogs and 125 dogs with an owner were collected from October 2004 to September 2005. AlI samples were concentrated by the sedimentation and flotation methods and by TF-Test® device. The following parasites, and their respective frequency were diagnosed in fecal samples : Ancylostoma spp. (38,2%), Giardia sp. (16,9%), Toxocara canis (8,7%), Tnchuris vulpis (7,1%), Isospora spp. (3,5%), Sarcocystis spp. (2,7%) and Dipylidium caninum (2,4%). Fifty-three out of 132 infected animais had mixed infection with two or more parasite genera. The prevalence of Ancy!ostoma spp., 1 canis and Giardia sp. as well as the occurrence of mixed infections were significantly higher in stray dogs (P <0,01) than in dogs with an owner. No effect of gender, breed and anti-helminthic treatment (P> 0,05) on the parasite frequency was observed, but the frequency of T. canis was higher (P < 0,05) in young animais. Giardia sp. cysts were more frequently detected from October to March. The centrifugation-flotation method was generally more accurate in the diagnosis of ali intestinal parasites of dogs, but only for Ancylostoma spp. this difference was observed in terms of prevalence. The species of parasites found in the studied region make the zinc sulfate flotation the most appropriate method not only to epidemiological studies, but also to individual diagnosis, speciaily in subciinical infections.

Abstract: There is concern about environmental pollution caused by the disposal of urban waste, mainly sewage sludge (LE). An alternative would be to use it in agriculture as fertilizer. Resolution No. 375 of CONAMA defines criterias for the agricultural use of LE in relation to its contamination by pathogens. The objective of this work was to determine the viability of the helminth eggs investigated in crude sewage sludge (LB) and litter (LC), soil with sludge and lettuce fertilized with this soil. The sewage sludge was obtained from the Belém Sewage Treatment Plant (ETE-Belém) in four samples (spring, summer, autumn and winter). The lettuce was cultivated in greenhouses in pots with three types of soil: control (soil + worm humus); soil + LB; soil + LC, with five replicates each. The soil was analyzed in three depths: 5 cm; 10 cm and 15 cm after harvesting lettuce feet. For the detection and viability of helminth eggs was utilized the Yanko method modified by Thomaz-Soccol et al. (2000). The lettuce was also analyzed by the method of Oliveira and Germano (1992). Statistical analysis was performed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney method. No helminth eggs were found in the lettuce samples grown in any of the soils, in both methods. In the sewage sludge collected in the summer, a greater number of helminth eggs per gram of dry matter (24.08 eggs/gMS in LB and 6.02 eggs/gMS in LC) and greater variability of helminths were detected: Ascaris lumbricoides (18, 86 in LB and 4.86 in LC), Hymenolepis diminuta (2.24 in LB and 0.02 in LC) Toxocara canis (1.64 in LB and 0.24 in LC), Trichuroidea (0.5 in LB and 0,36 in LC); Trichuris vulpis (0.45 in LB and 0.28 in LC) and Trichuris trichiura (0.4 in LB and 0.26 in LC). However, the highest percentage of viable helminth eggs was in winter (33,3% LB, 31,5% LC), followed by spring (16,7% LB, 23,1% LC), autumn (27,5% LB, 3,57% LC) and summer (14,46% LB, 2,99% LC). There was no statistically significant difference between the mean number of helminth eggs found in the soil + LC and control, at no depth, for both viable eggs and total helminth eggs, in any season of the year. In the soil + LB the mean number of helminth eggs was 0,260 eggs/gMS, being significantly higher (p = 0.008) to the soil + LC (0,033 eggs/gMS). In the control soil, there was no statistical difference when comparing the depths, however, in the summer and autumn is observed an increase in the number of eggs as the depth increases. In autumn, in the soil + LB, the total average of helminth eggs at depth 15 cm (0,359) was superior and significant to the depth of 5 cm (0.185). In the soil + LC, in the spring, in depths 10 cm and 15 cm, the means of viable eggs (0,151 and 0,172) and total (0,289 and 0,304) found were significantly higher than those found in the depth of 5 cm (0.005 viable, 0.099 total). In the other stations the same pattern was not found. Under the conditions established for this work, the greater the soil depth (15cm), the greater the chance of finding helminth eggs. We can conclude that although in the summer we found more eggs of helminths, it was in winter that the highest percentage of viability occurred. With this work, we can not conclude that lettuce fertilized with sludge does not represent a risk, even though no helminth eggs were found in it. Further research is needed in field conditions to add data that allow, after extensive discussion of the researchers, to analyze the impact for environmental contamination and Public Health. Key words: Sewage sludge, Helminths, Lettuce.
