Analysis of Low-Energy Lunar Transfers in a High-Fidelity Dynamics ModelTorchia, Patrick Jason 03 July 2023 (has links)
Renewed interest in returning to the Moon, emboldened by recent directives and missions by NASA, has necessitated the establishment of lunar infrastructure to support continuous human presence. With that, the objective of making this return more cost effective has gained significant importance. Low energy lunar transfers are more efficient ways to reach the Moon than the traditional Hohmann-type transfer. These trajectories leverage the multi-body gravitational effects to reduce overall delta-v requirements, in some cases removing the capture delta-v completely. While the time of flight for these transfers can be much longer than a Hohmann-type transfer, the chaotic design space of these transfers can enable large changes in arrival conditions at the Moon for small changes in initial conditions. Many investigations of these transfers take place in simplified dynamical models, such as the Planar Circular Restricted Three Body Problem, with very few higher-fidelity models being implemented. This approach is good to understand the dynamics of these trajectories as well as provide initial guesses for higher-fidelity models; but approximating the dynamics heavily make these models less applicable to mission design. This thesis aims to investigate the application of a higher-order model to simulate these trajectories. STK Astrogator was used to recreate the NASA GRAIL trajectory; and from the recreated trajectory, a nominal trajectory absent of mid-course corrections was established. This nominal trajectory was used to perform parametric and variational studies of departure and arrival conditions as well as compare to a nominal trajectory in a reduced-fidelity model. An investigation into the post launch correction burn requirements following launch vehicle under-performance was completed. Utilizing low energy transfers proved beneficial to adjusting arrival conditions for low delta-v requirements. All arrival inclinations are reasonably achievable for around 255 m/s. Using 255 m/s as a baseline, right ascension of the ascending node could be reached in a 40 degree range and argument of periapsis in a 50 degree range. Lunar insertion arrival can be varied by 7 hours on either side for less than 80 m/s. Trans-lunar injection epoch can be varied by 7 hours on either side of nominal departure for less than 4 m/s. Orbit radius and initial velocity are the most expensive errors to correct. These trajectories can be tuned to reduce the overall mid-course correction delta-v requirement for differing arrival inclinations if other orbital elements are relaxed. A relationship between placement of post-launch correction maneuver for velocity or radius errors was found. Comparing the trajectory in STK to the Inclined Bi-Elliptic Restricted Four Body problem, revealed that timing of the trajectory is variable while keeping the same arrival and departure conditions. However, solar radiation pressure cannot be ignored for more accurate simulation of these trajectories. This investigation has shown that low energy lunar transfers are a viable method to reach the Moon and their chaotic nature can be leveraged to relax restrictions in the design space. / Master of Science / Returning to the Moon has become a more important goal within the space industry. Traditional ways to reach the Moon required large amounts of fuel to be expended to remain around the Moon after launch. Low energy lunar transfers aim to reduce fuel usage while still reaching the Moon, although they take much longer to reach their destination. Fuel and energy have direct comparisons and are used to evaluate these transfers. These transfers are highly susceptible to changes in their trajectory making them ideal for transferring to the Moon in different orientations. These changes can be made using very little fuel, allowing for more resources to be brought to the Moon. Navigating these transfers to the Moon require an accurate model of space for mission design.

Effects of Simulated Clinical Experiences on Empathy, Self-confidence, and Satisfaction in Nursing StudentsRiess, Dawn 01 January 2018 (has links)
Empathetic communication enhances the nurse-patient relationship and improves patient outcomes and needs to be taught and evaluated during simulated clinical experiences. Experience in healthcare education has shown students' empathy levels decrease over time. The purpose of this quasi-experimental pretest posttest, study was to compare nursing students' empathy levels, self-confidence, and satisfaction with simulation between the use of the high-fidelity manikin simulator (HFMS) and a standardized patient (SP) used during their simulated clinical experience. Kolb's experiential learning theory was used to guide the study through the four phases specific to simulation and learning. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 135 nursing students in the pre-simulation survey; 123 participants completed the post-simulation survey with 64 in the control group (HFMS) and 59 in the experimental group (SP). Data were analyzed using an independent t-test to determine if there were any mean differences between the HFMS and SP groups in terms of empathy, satisfaction, and self-confidence. Empathy was measured using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professions Student and the NLN's Satisfaction and Self-Confidence Scales. Results revealed there were no significant difference in students' empathy levels, self-confidence, and satisfaction. Positive social change through prioritizing nursing students' empathetic communication in patient care may be enhanced in the simulated clinical environment with various approaches. Recommendations for future research are to determine what interventions best develop nursing students' empathy, satisfaction, and self-confidence in patient care .

Detta examensarbete har bestått av utvecklingen av en konceptuell mobilapplikation som ska uppmuntra barn till fysiskt aktiv lek. Arbetets involverade frågeställningar bestod av hur en mobilapplikation kan utformas för att uppmuntra barn till fysisk aktivitet, samt hur en mobilapplikation kan samverka med ett aktivitetsarmband för att förhöja användarupplevelsen. Utvecklingsarbetet har bestått av en produktutvecklingsprocess tidiga del, och har gått från förundersökning fram till skapandet av en high fidelity prototyp med tillhörande användartester. Produktutvecklingen har inkluderat human-centered design vilket har inneburit ett flertal tillfällen där barn, mellan 6 och 10 år gamla, har inkluderats i arbetet. Detta har påverkat de involverade metoderna samt resultatet. Arbetet resulterade i en konceptuell mobilapplikation där användaren kan ta hand om en figur med hjälp av poäng som samlats med fysisk aktivitet. Konceptet innehåller flera olika funktioner så som en affär där insamlade aktivitetspoäng kan spenderas, en garderob med ägda accessoarer, minispel i form av exergames och statistik över utförd fysisk ansträngning. För att förhöja användarens upplevelse av aktivitetsarmbandet skapades ett samband mellan detta och den konceptuella mobilapplikationen. Detta samband innebar att konceptets poäng samlas in med hjälp av armbandet för att sedan överföras till spelet med en synkroniseringsfunktion.

Comparison of selected outcomes based on teaching strategies that promote active learning in nursing educationNicholson, Anita Christine 01 May 2010 (has links)
This study examined differences in the effects of three active-learning teaching strategies (case-based learning, simulation, and simulation with narrative pedagogy) on the outcomes of nursing student performance of intervention activities, performance retention of intervention activities, student satisfaction, self-confidence, and educational practice preferences. Engagement theory of student learning provided the overarching theoretical framework. An experimental posttest-only design incorporating two posttests (first performance and retention performance) was used with a sample of 74 nursing students at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. Students attended a cardiac lecture and completed a cardiac test prior to the teaching strategies. Students were randomly assigned and participated in one of the three active-learning teaching strategies and completed the Demographic Questionnaire, the Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Instrument, and the Educational Practices Questionnaire. Week 3 of the study, after the teaching strategies students participated in an individual performance demonstration in which they implemented nursing intervention activities in response to a cardiovascular scenario interacting with a high-fidelity mannequin. Week 8 of the study, another individual retention performance demonstration was completed by the students using a different case scenario. Both performance demonstrations were digitally recorded and scored using the Student Performance Demonstration Rubric.
Two-way mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant main effect (within-subjects effect) of time, meaning that students in all three teaching strategy groups experienced improved performance of nursing interventions over time, from first performance to retention performance. No significant interaction effect (within-subjects) for time and teaching strategy groups were found. There was also no significant main effect (between-subjects effect) of teaching strategy groups (F 2, 71 = 2.33, p = .105). An exploratory one-way ANOVA on student's first performance rubric scores revealed results approaching significance for the three groups (F 2, 71 = 2.90, p = .06). The simulation with narrative pedagogy group had the highest first performance mean (72.74), followed by the case-based learning group mean (70.68), and finally the simulation group scored the lowest mean (66.16). One-way ANOVA revealed no significant differences across the groups for students' Satisfaction Total scores, Self-Confidence Total scores, and Presence and Importance of Educational Practices Total scores.

<p>There are a vast number of research and studies undertaken within the domain of user-centered design concerning the design process of an artifact, but still there are questions being raised of the relatively new and successful field of mobile design. During recent years mobile technology have surpassed the standardized thoughts of how to prototype and evaluate such a ubiquitous device. The paper addresses this predicament by discussing aspects of fidelity differences in an early design process of a mobile design. The example being presented refers to a design study of an iPhone-application, where two different types of prototypes were created and user tested, a low-fidelity paper prototype and a mixed-fidelity interactive prototype. The paper sets focus on the various differences between these fidelities closely related to the case. It also reflects on how mobile design approaches can mature during the early stages of a design process.</p>

An efficient algorithm for blade loss simulations applied to a high-order rotor dynamics problemParthasarathy, Nikhil Kaushik 30 September 2004 (has links)
In this thesis, a novel approach is presented for blade loss simulation of an aircraft gas turbine rotor mounted on rolling element bearings with squeeze film dampers, seal rub and enclosed in a flexible housing. The modal truncation augmentation (MTA) method provides an efficient tool for modeling this large order system with localized nonlinearities in the ball bearings. The gas turbine engine, which is composed of the power turbine and gas generator rotors, is modeled with 38 lumped masses. A nonlinear angular contact bearing model is employed, which has ball and race degrees of freedom and uses a modified Hertzian contact force between the races and balls and for the seal rub. This combines a dry contact force and viscous damping force. A flexible housing with seal rub is also included whose modal description is imported from ANSYS. Prediction of the maximum contact load and the corresponding stress on an elliptical contact area between the races and balls is made during the blade loss simulations. A finite-element based squeeze film damper (SFD), which determines the pressure profile of the oil film and calculates damper forces for any type of whirl orbit is utilized in the simulation. The new approach is shown to provide efficient and accurate predictions of whirl amplitudes, maximum contact load and stress in the bearings, transmissibility, thermal growths, maximum and minimum damper pressures and the amount of unbalanced force for incipient oil film cavitation. It requires about 4 times less computational time than the traditional approaches and has an error of less than 5 %.
