Les résultats présentés dans cette thèse s’articulent autour de la synthèse d’observateurs de type grand gain pour des classes de systèmes non linéaires multi-entrées, multi-sorties non uniformément observables. Dans un premier temps, la classe de systèmes considérées est telle que la dynamique des variables d’état est décrite par la somme de deux termes. Le premier correspond à une partie affine en l’état décrite par le produit d’une matrice, dont les entrées (fonctions non linéaires de l’état) ont une structure triangulaire, par le vecteur d’état. Le deuxième terme est composé par les non linéarités du système qui ont aussi une structure triangulaire. Le gain de l’observateur proposé est issu de la résolution d’une équation différentielle ordinaire de type Lyapunov.La convergence exponentielle de l’erreur d’observation sous-jacente est établie sous une une certaine condition d’excitation persistante dépendant de l’entrée du système et de l’état de l’observateur.Dans un deuxième temps, la synthèse de cet observateur est étendue à une classe plus large de systèmes non linéaires où des états peuvent intervenir de manière non triangulaire.La notion d’indices caractéristiques associés à ces états est alors introduite et elle a permis de définir une structure triangulaire étendue pour la quelle la synthèse de l’observateur a aussi été effectuée.Enfin, il a été établi que les observateurs proposés peuvent être utiliséscomme observateurs adaptatifs pour l’estimation simultanée de l’état et de certains paramètres et une forme adaptative de ces observateurs a été générée.Les performances des différents observateurs proposés ont été illustrées à travers des exemples en simulation / The results given in this thesis deal with the design of high gain observers for some classes on Multi Input Multi Output non uniformly observable nonlinear systems. In a first step, the class of considered systems is such that the dynamics of the state variables is the sum of two terms. The first term is affine in the state and is composed by the product of a matrix, whose entries are nonlinear functions of the state with a triangular structure, by the state vector. The second term describes the system nonlinearities which also assume a triangular structure. The gain of the proposed observer is issued from the resolution of a Lyapunov ordinary differential equation. The exponential convergence of the underlying observation error is established under a persistent excitation condition involving the system inputs and the state of the observer. In a second step, the observer design has been extended to a larger class of nonlinear systems where some state variables may intervene in a non triangular way. The notion of the characteristic indices associated to these state variables is then introduced and it allowed to define an extended triangular structure for which a high gain observer has been designed. Finally, it has been established that the proposed observers can be used as adaptive ones to jointly estimate the system state together with some unknown parameters and an adaptive form of these observers has been derived. The performance and main properties of the proposed observers have been illustrated in simulation by considering many examples throughout this thesis.

Global finite-time observers for a class of nonlinear systems

The contributions of this thesis lie in the area of global finite-time observer design for a class of nonlinear systems with bounded rational and mixed rational powers imposed on the incremental rate of the nonlinear terms whose solutions exist and are unique for all positive time. In the thesis, two different kinds of nonlinear global finite-time observers are designed by employing of finite-time theory and homogeneity properties with different methods. The global finite-time stability of both proposed observers is derived on the basis of Lyapunov theory. For a class of nonlinear systems with rational and mixed rational powers imposed on the nonlinearities, the first global finite-time observers are designed, where the global finite-time stability of the observation systems is achieved from two parts by combining asymptotic stability and local finitetime stability. The proposed observers can only be designed for the class of nonlinear systems with dimensions greater than 3. The observers have a dynamic high gain and two homogenous terms, one homogeneous of degree greater than 1 and the other of degree less than 1. In order to prove the global finite-time stability of the proposed results, two homogeneous Lyapunov functions are provided, corresponding with the two homogeneous items. One is homogeneous of degree greater than 1, which makes the observation error systems converging into a spherical area around the origin, and the other is of degree less than 1, which ensures local finite-time stability. The second global finite-time observers are also proposed based on the high-gain technique, which does not place any limitation on the dimension of the nonlinear systems. Compared with the first global finite-time observers, the newly designed observers have only one homogeneous term and a new gain update law where two new terms are introduced to dominate some terms in the nonlinearities and ensure global finite-time stability as well. The global finite-time stability is obtained directly based on a sufficient condition of finite-time stability and only one Lyapunov function is employed in the proof. The validity of the two kinds of global finite-time observers that have been designed is illustrated through some simulation results. Both of them can make the observation error systems converge to the origin in finite-time. The parameters, initial conditions as well as the high gain do have some impact on the convergence time, where the high gain plays a stronger role. The bigger the high gain is, the shorter the time it needs to converge. In order to show the performance of the two kinds of observers more clearly, two examples are provided and some comparisons are made between them. Through these, it can be seen that under the same parameters and initial conditions, although the amplitude of the observation error curve is slightly greater, the global finite-time observers with a new gain update law can make the observation error systems converge much more quickly than the global finite-time observers with two homogeneous terms. In the simulation results, one can see that, as a common drawback of high gain observers, they are noise-sensitive. This thesis demonstrates that the composite cascode differential stage, operating in the subthreshold region, can form the basis of a high gain (113 dB) and low-power op amp (28.1 µW). The circuit can be fabricated without adding a compensation capacitance. The advantages of this architecture include high voltage gain, low bandwidth, low harmonic distortion, low quiescent current and power, and small chip area. These advantages suggest that this design might be well-suited for biomedical applications where low power, low noise bio-signal amplifiers capable of amplifying signals in the millihertz-to-kilohertz range is required.

FAULT DIAGNOSIS AND FAULT-TOLERANT CONTROL OF CHEMICAL PROCESS SYSTEMS

<p>This thesis considers the problem of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control (FTC) for chemical process systems with nonlinear dynamics. The primary objective of fault diagnosis discussed in this work is to identify the failed actuator or sensor by using the information embodied in a process model, as well as input and output data. To this end, an active fault isolation method is first proposed to identify actuator faults and process disturbances by utilizing control action and process nonlinearity. The key idea is to move the process to a region upon fault detection where the effect of each fault can be differentiated from others. The proposed method enables isolation of faults that may not be achievable under nominal operation. This work then investigates the problem of sensor fault isolation by exploiting model-based sensor redundancy through state observer design. Specifically, a high-gain observer is presented and the stability property of the closed-loop system is rigorously established. A method that uses a bank of high-gain observers is then proposed to isolate sensor faults, which explicitly accounts for process nonlinearity, and to continue nominal operation upon fault isolation. In addition to fault diagnosis, this work addresses the problem of handling severe actuator faults using a safe-parking approach and integrating fault diagnosis and safe-parking techniques in a unified fault-handling framework. In particular, several practical issues are considered for the design and implementation of safe-parking techniques, including changes in process dynamics, the network structure of a chemical plant, and actuators frozen at arbitrary positions. The advantage of this approach is that it enables stable process operation under faulty conditions, avoiding the partial or entire shutdown of a chemical plant and resulting economic losses. The efficacy of the proposed fault diagnosis and FTC methods is demonstrated through numerous simulations of chemical process examples.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Les observateurs et la régulation de sortie sont deux thèmes centraux de la théorie des système non linéaires. Bien que de nombreux chercheurs ont consacré leur attention à ces questions depuis plus de trente ans, il y a encore de nombreuses questions ouvertes. Dans la théorie des observateurs un rôle clé est joué par les observateurs à grand gain. Le but de la première partie de la thèse est d'etudier nouvelles techniques qui permettent de surmonter ou au moins d'atténuer les principaux problèmes qui caractérisent cette classe d'observateurs. Nous proposons une nouvelle classe d'observateurs à grand gain, appelé "low-power", qui permet de surmonter les problèmes numériques, d'éviter le phénomène de peaking et d'améliorer les propriétés de sensibilité aux bruit de mesure à haute fréquence. La deuxième partie de la thèse aborde du problème de la régulation de sortie, qui a été résolu pour les systèmes linéaires au cours des années 70, par Francis et Wonham qui ont énoncé le célèbre «principe de modèle interne". Des solutions constructives ont aussi été proposées dans le cadre non linéaire mais sous des hypothèses restrictives qui réduisent la classe des systèmes auxquels cette méthodologie peut être appliquée. Dans la thèse, nous nous concentrons sur le problème de la régulation de sortie en présence de perturbations périodiques, et nous proposons une nouvelle approche qui nous permet de considérer une classe plus large de systèmes non linéaires. La technique obtenué est robuste au sens défini par Francis et Wonham. / Observers and output regulation are two central topics in nonlinear control system theory. Although many researchers have devoted their attention to these issues for more than 30 years, there are still many open questions. In the observer theory a key role is played by the so called high-gain observers. The purpose of the first part of the thesis is to study novel techniques which allow to overcome or at least to mitigate some of the main drawbacks characterizing this class of observers. We propose a novel class of high-gain observers, denoted as ``low-power'', which allows to overcome numerical problems, to avoid the peaking phenomenon and to improve the sensitivity properties to high-frequency measurement noise. The second part of the thesis addresses the output regulation problem, solved for linear systems during the 70's by Francis and Wonham who coined the celebrated ``internal model principle''. Constructive solutions have also been proposed in the nonlinear framework but under restrictive assumptions that reduce the class of systems to which this methodology can be applied. In this thesis we focus on the output regulation problem in presence of periodic disturbances and we propose a novel approach which allows to consider a broader class of nonlinear systems. The resulting design is robust in the sense defined by Francis and Wonham.

Contribution à la conception d'un système d'identification et de classification de véhicules par les ondes électromagnétiques / Design of a vehicles identification and classification system by using electromagnetic waves

Les activités de transport de passagers et de marchandises augmentent sans cesse dans le monde et en particulier dans l'Union Européenne, entre autres au bord des péages. Afin d'améliorer la fluidité et réduire les risques d‘encombrements, une des solutions consiste à rendre les péages plus performants. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'améliorer la performance des systèmes d'identification de véhicules et de contribuer à la conception d'un système de classification des types de véhicules par ondes électromagnétiques pour application au télépéage. Ce système permet un paiement automatique sans arrêt des véhicules. La première partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'étude de deux systèmes d'identification de véhicules : RFID UHF et DSRC. Notre recherche s'est focalisée sur l'augmentation de la distance de communication ainsi que sur la réduction de la taille et du prix du système grâce à 5 nouvelles antennes à bas coûts, très directives et faciles à industrialiser. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l'étude d'un système de classification à distance des différents types de véhicules, basé sur les ondes diffusées par les véhicules. Il détecte la présence d'un véhicule et mesure la distance entre ce véhicule et le système avec une bonne précision. Ce système est basé sur la technique de radar Ultra-Large-Bande. Le signal émis est une impulsion monocyle de très courte durée. Dans cette partie, nous proposons et testons trois méthodes de classification de véhicules dans un environnement proche du milieu routier. / The activities of passenger and goods transport are constantly increasing worldwide and especially in the European Union, including the edge of tolls. To improve the fluidity and reduce the risk of congestion, one of the solutions is automatic toll payments. The objective of this thesis is to enhance the performance of vehicle identification systems and to contribute to develop a design of a classification vehicles system by using electromagnetic waves for free-flow electronic toll collection system application. This system allows an automatic payment without stopping vehicles. The first part of this thesis deals with the study of two vehicle identification systems: UHF RFID and DSRC. Five new antennas were realized with the purpose to increase the communication range as well as to reduce the size and cost of the system. They are high gain and easy to be industrialized. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the study of a classification of different types of vehicles from the scattered waves captured by the system. Three methods of vehicle classification are proposed and tested in the road environment. Such system detects the presence of vehicle and measures the distance between vehicle and itself with a good accuracy. The principle of the system is based on Ultra-Wideband radar technology in which transmitting signal with a very short duration pulse is used.

Design and Analysis of an adaptive λ-Tracking Controller for powered Gearshifts in automatic Transmissions

To meet the continuously increasing goals in vehicle fuel efficiency, a number of measures are taken in automotive powertrain engineering, such as the combination of electric drives and conventional combustion engines in hybrid vehicles or the increase in gear ratios. This development leads to more complex powertrain systems, such as automatic transmissions. At the same time, the need for complex control systems is increased to achieve this desired functionality. Automatic transmissions are controlled by an electro-hydraulic control unit that governs all operations such as gear shifting and starting. Since most of the control software is designed in the form of open-loop control, most of the operations have to be calibrated manually. Thus, there exists a large number of calibration parameters in the control software that have to be tuned individually for each combination of engine, transmission and vehicle model. This process is therefore time-consuming and costly. Hence, it would be advantageous to reduce the need for calibration and in the end shorten the development process for automatic transmissions by reducing software complexity while maintaining functionality and performance. The goal of this thesis is to replace parts of the control software responsible for conducting the gearshifts that require extensive tuning by implementing control systems that have no need for calibration: adaptive high-gain λ-tracking controllers. In order to obtain the control parameters, i.e., the feedback gains, without calibration, an adaption law is implemented that continuously computes these parameters during operation of the controller. Thus, calibration is no longer needed. Since the system has to be high-gain-stabilizable, an extensive system analysis is conducted to determine whether an adaptive λ-tracking controller can be implemented. A nonlinear model of the clutch system dynamics is formulated and investigated. As a result, high-gain stability is proven for the system class and validated in simulation. Following the stability analysis, the devised adaptive controller is implemented into the control software running on the series production transmission control unit. Extensive simulations with a comprehensive vehicle model running the extended transmission software are conducted to design and to test the adaptive controllers and their underlying parameters during transmission operation in order to evaluate the control performance. The control software containing the adaptive controller is then implemented in two distinct vehicles with different automatic transmissions equipped with series production control hardware for the purpose of hardware experiments and validation. The resulting reduction of calibration efforts is discussed.

New quasi-TEM waveguides using artificial surfaces and their application to antennas and circuits

Research interest: In recent years we have seen the emergence of commercial applications at high frequencies, such as the top part of the microwave band and the millimeter and sub-millimeter bands, and it is expected a big increase in the coming years. This growing demand requires a rapid development of low-cost technology with good performance at these frequencies, where common technologies, such as microstrip and standard waveguides, have some shortcomings. In particular, existing solutions for high-gain planar scanning antennas at these frequencies su er from the disadvantages of these technologies giving rise to high-cost products not suitable for high volume production. Objectives: The main objective of this thesis is to study the feasibility of a new proposal to improve existing solutions to date for low-cost high-gain planar scanning antennas at high frequencies. This overall objective has resulted in another central objective of this thesis, which is the research of new quasi-TEM waveguides that are more appropriate than current technologies for the realization of circuits and components at these frequency bands. These guided solutions make use of periodic or arti cial surfaces in order to con- ne and channel the elds within these waveguides. Methodology: The work follows a logical sequence of speci c tasks aimed at achieving the main objective of this thesis. Chapter 2 presents the proposed guiding solution and shows its performance numerical and experimentally. The optimized design of high-gain antennas based on waveguide slot arrays requires the development of e cient ad-hoc codes. The implementation and validation of this code is presented in Chapter 3, where a new method for the analysis of corrugated surfaces is proposed, and in Chapter 4, which extends this code to the analysis of waveguide slot arrays. The process design and optimization of a two-dimensional array is described in Chapter 5, where a preliminary experimental validation is also described. Moreover, the proposed guiding solution has inspired the development of a new guiding technology of wider bandwidth and more versatile for the realization of circuits and components at high frequencies.
