Student Perceptions of Environmental Quality While Attending Accelerated Medical Technology College Courses

Westbrook, Ralph L. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Regional weather patterns in the southwestern United States frequently test the engineering involved in indoor air handling equipment in college facilities. Although an adequate indoor thermal environment has been found to affect student learning, little is known about students' perceptions of classroom heating and ventilation and impacts on learning. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how students in accelerated medical technology courses perceived the environmental quality in their classrooms and discern whether these conditions affected overall gains in knowledge, persistence, and retention in their learning. Fourteen participants from 2 local community colleges were interviewed using purposeful sampling. Guided by Nicol and Humphrey's adaptive heat model along with the theories of Maslow, Bandura, and Bronfenbrenner, the research questions centered on how students perceived the classroom environmental quality and its effects on their learning and well-being. Thematic analysis was used to reveal concerns about the operational state of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, their effect on classroom environmental quality and the student's ability to attend class. Interview responses indicated that positive indoor environmental conditions are essential to students' learning. Project study results led to the development of a white paper for collaborative use at each development forum. Positive implications for social change include increasing staff members' knowledge about improving and maintaining adequate indoor environmental quality to support overall student achievement.

Successful Transfer of Phi Theta Kappa Students into Institutions of Higher Learning

Carmichael, Stacy E 14 August 2015 (has links)
The study was conducted to identify characteristics that are associated with successful transfer to institutions of higher learning from 3 Phi Theta Kappa chapters at a large multi-campus Mississippi community college. The study examined participation rates and transfer rates of Phi Theta Kappa students. The current study also identified student characteristics that predict the successful transfer of Phi Theta Kappa members. A correlational methodological approach was employed. The Phi Theta Kappa chapters in this study have significant differences in membership, yet the factors that predict transfer to a 4-year university or college are few. The factors include age at transfer, cumulative grade point average, type of major, and associate degree completion. The analysis resulted in a model that may be used to predict the probability that a Phi Theta Kappa student will be a successful transfer. The model was able to predict the transfer of these students with significantly higher probabilities than the baseline model.

Graduate perceptions of customer service in institutions of higher learning

Walters, Danny D. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Education / Department of Educational Leadership / W. Franklin Spikes / The purpose of this basic interpretative qualitative study was to discover and understand graduates’ perceptions of customer service from their chosen college or university. How graduates perceive customer service of institutions of higher learning may induce some educational institutions to pursue continuous improvement and performance excellence. Graduates from the master’s level or higher have spent more than the average time in the educational setting compared to undergraduates or bachelor’s level students and are more likely to have greater awareness concerning the customer service attributes. These perceptions could give rise to process improvement techniques and programs that would be useful for a variety of institutions. The method used to acquire the data was interviewing individuals who had completed at least their master’s degree. The results of these interviews were analyzed by consolidating, reducing, and interpreting what the interviewees had to say and what the researcher discovered. Triangulation through reflection and field notes was utilized to ensure credibility of findings.

Knowledge-sharing management in the context of higher education institutions

Al Kurdi, Osama F. January 2017 (has links)
Competitive advantage does not depend solely on the creation and storage of existing and new knowledge. Rather, it requires sustained exploitation and production. The challenge becomes driven towards maintaining some mechanisms to help in producing new, and sharing existing knowledge. Harnessing the power of managing and sharing knowledge enabled companies like Apple and IBM to gain competitive advantage over their competitors. While such challenges have been closely examined in the extant literature, the context of knowledge management and sharing in higher education institutions (HEI) has only been lightly considered. However, considering the highly unique features of HEIs context in terms of autonomy, climate, distinct leadership and role of academics as knowledge workers, it can be argued that examining knowledge-sharing in the context of higher education is greatly needed. The literature has shown fragmented nature of examining academics' KS determinants in contemporary research. Thus, the need to comprehensively examine those influencers is essential. This thesis seeks to address the research gaps and contribute to the literature by asking What antecedents influence the process of knowledge-sharing (KS) between academics in HEIs, and how can the process of KS in HEIs be improved? Through the use of a quantitative research methodology, the research has developed eleven hypotheses to investigate the above-mentioned question. The findings in this study revealed to a very great extent that academics themselves can contribute towards influencing knowledge production and management, and determine the levels to which the universities will be able to share knowledge internally. The research reveals that organizational factors (affiliation, innovativeness, fairness represented by organizational climate and HEI leadership) were stronger predictors of academics' knowledge-sharing than individual (perceived loss of knowledge power, knowledge self-efficacy, perceived reciprocal benefits and trust) or technological ones.

Att utvecklas inom sitt yrke : Om den högre utbildningens inverkan på den erfarna pedagogen

Qvist, Andreas January 2012 (has links)
This work is based on qualitative interviews with four educationists who before their university studies lack education in their own field of work. The study aims to explore how higher learning influenced and affected these people. As a theoretical point of view the concept of implicit learning and Aristotle’s epistemological approach was used. The study gives an idea that the concept of knowledge is advanced and can go from practical experience to more theoretical understandings. The result of the study shows, despite some criticism on the standard of the education, that the subjects proved to have developed understanding in reflection, communication and personal awareness. In addition this kind of comprehension can be hidden from us and therefore difficult to understand and explain.
