CD31(-) HipOps - A Highly Osteogenic Cell Population From Mouse Bone MarrowMcKenzie, Kristen Penny 04 December 2012 (has links)
Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), found in many adult tissues, may be useful for regenerative medicine applications. Their identification and purification have been difficult due to their low frequency and lack of unambiguous markers. Using a magnetic micro-beads negative selection technique to remove contaminating hematopoietic cells from mouse bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs), our lab recently isolated a highly purified osteoprogenitor (HipOp) population that was also enriched for other mesenchymal precursors, including MSCs (Itoh and Aubin, 2009). To further enhance enrichment, we positively selected BMSCs and HipOps for CD73, a putative MSC marker, which resulted in no significant additional enrichment for osteoprogenitors when the population was tested in vitro. However, we also found that HipOps were enriched in vascular endothelial cells, and that removing these cells by further negative selection with CD31/PECAM resulted in a CD31(-) HipOp population with higher osteogenic capacity than HipOps in vitro and in vivo.

Communications with 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling at the Receiver: Benefiting from Inter-Symbol-InterferenceKrone, Stefan, Fettweis, Gerhard 25 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
1-bit analog-to-digital conversion is very attractive for low-complexity communications receivers. A major drawback is, however, the small spectral efficiency when sampling at symbol rate. This can be improved through oversampling by exploiting the signal distortion caused by the transmission channel. This paper analyzes the achievable data rate of band-limited communications channels that are subject to additive noise and inter-symbol-interference with 1-bit quantization and oversampling at the receiver. It is shown that not only the channel noise but also the inter-symbol-interference can be exploited to benefit from oversampling.

Static Partial Order Reduction for Probabilistic Concurrent SystemsFernández-Díaz, Álvaro, Baier, Christel, Benac-Earle, Clara, Fredlund, Lars-Åke 10 September 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Sound criteria for partial order reduction for probabilistic concurrent systems have been presented in the literature. Their realization relies on a depth-first search-based approach for generating the reduced model. The drawback of this dynamic approach is that it can hardly be combined with other techniques to tackle the state explosion problem, e.g., symbolic probabilistic model checking with multi-terminal variants of binary decision diagrams. Following the approach presented by Kurshan et al. for non-probabilistic systems, we study partial order reduction techniques for probabilistic concurrent systems that can be realized by a static analysis. The idea is to inject the reduction criteria into the control flow graphs of the processes of the system to be analyzed. We provide the theoretical foundations of static partial order reduction for probabilistic concurrent systems and present algorithms to realize them. Finally, we report on some experimental results.

Efficient information leakage neutralization on a relay-assisted multi-carrier interference channelHo, Zuleita K.-M., Jorswieck, Eduard A., Engelmann, Sabrina 22 November 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In heterogeneous dense networks where spectrum is shared, users privacy remains one of the major challenges. When the receivers are not only interested in their own signals but also in eavesdropping other users' signals, the cross talk becomes information leakage. We propose a novel and efficient secrecy rate enhancing relay strategy EFFIN for information leakage neutralization. The relay matrix is chosen such that the effective leakage channel (spectral and spatial) is zero. Thus, it ensures secrecy regardless of receive processing employed at eavesdroppers and does not rely on wiretaps codes to ensure secrecy, unlike other physical layer security techniques such as artificial noise. EFFIN achieves a higher sum secrecy rate over several state-of-the-art baseline methods.

Zoning of the commercial poultry industry in Ontario as a method of avian influenza mitigationLabelle, Heather Elise 01 1900 (has links)
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) is the international reference body for international trade standards for live animals. Zoning is a method of controlling certain infectious diseases, including avian influenza, recommended by the OIE for use when appropriate. Avian influenza outbreaks have been extremely costly to the poultry industry throughout the world.
In order to assess whether this approach was possible in Ontario, data on poultry industry production sites were provided by the Ontario poultry marketing boards. Zone borders were formed based on two criteria. The first criterion was the supply of essential products and services such that within-zone commercial poultry production could be maintained. The second was the contiguity of the zone’s territory. Four associated industries were identified which provide essential products and services: feed mills, abattoirs, hatcheries, and egg grading stations. A product flow analysis was completed to understand the direction of product movements between the poultry production sites and the sites of the four associated industries. This analysis was used to create a database of input requirements and output production capacity from each type of poultry production site. Using ArcGIS, this information was merged with geospatial data from Statistics Canada on Ontario and Quebec to create the database used for zoning scenarios.
Seventy-two scenarios were completed; of these, four were chosen which minimized production loss over the whole industry. These scenarios demonstrate that the method used for the zoning study can identify the production deficits and surpluses of the commercial poultry industry in Ontario. These scenarios can serve as a starting point for discussion among industry stakeholders, as cooperation and communication are essential to the success of zoning.

Information Leakage Neutralization for the Multi-Antenna Non-Regenerative Relay-Assisted Multi-Carrier Interference ChannelHo, Zuleita, Jorswieck, Eduard, Engelmann, Sabrina 21 October 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In heterogeneous dense networks where spectrum is shared, users' privacy remains one of the major challenges. On a multi-antenna relay-assisted multi-carrier interference channel, each user shares the spectral and spatial resources with all other users. When the receivers are not only interested in their own signals but also in eavesdropping other users' signals, the cross talk on the spectral and spatial channels becomes information leakage. In this paper, we propose a novel secrecy rate enhancing relay strategy that utilizes both spectral and spatial resources, termed as information leakage neutralization. To this end, the relay matrix is chosen such that the effective channel from the transmitter to the colluding eavesdropper is equal to the negative of the effective channel over the relay to the colluding eavesdropper and thus the information leakage to zero. Interestingly, the optimal relay matrix in general is not block-diagonal which encourages users' encoding over the frequency channels. We proposed two information leakage neutralization strategies, namely efficient information leakage neutralization (EFFIN) and local-optimized information leakage neutralization (LOPTIN). EFFIN provides a simple and efficient design of relay processing matrix and precoding matrices at the transmitters in the scenario of limited power and computational resources. LOPTIN, despite its higher complexity, provides a better sum secrecy rate performance by optimizing the relay processing matrix and the precoding matrices jointly. The proposed methods are shown to improve the sum secrecy rates over several state-of-the-art baseline methods.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-24 / The scope of this study is to evaluate the implementation process of the Compulsory License in the case of the antiretroviral efavirenz. This research is descriptive in nature and the medium of investigation was the case study. It was conducted during the months of October through December 2009 with semi-structured interviews containing open-ended questions with a group of Public Health policy makers and managers residing in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and the Federal District who participated in the compulsory license process. These individuals were allowed to express themselves without any constraints in such a way that they could produce discourses. The Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) technique was then used for analysis of the discourses. The results revealed that Brazil has the technological capability to develop and produce antiretrovirals within a reasonably short period of time. The results further showed that the Compulsory License helped to curb spending on antiretrovirals and that the measure can be used to ensure access by the public to high-cost and strategic antiretroviral drugs for the Brazilian public health service (Unified Health System – SUS) in an environment with limited funds, whenever an impasse is reached in negotiations for price reductions with transnational pharmaceutical laboratories.

Evaluation of antiretroviral therapy program in primary health care settings of LesothoNyangu, Isabel 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antiretroviral therapy program in primary health care settings in Lesotho. Mixed methods research using a convergent parallel mixed methods design was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data which were analysed during the same phase of the research process. Two groups of participants participated in the study, the registered nurse group was composed of registered nurses/midwives/nurse clinicians involved in ART service provision and the second group was composed of adults aged 18 years and older who were HIV/AIDS positive.
Quantitative data had a compliance rate of 92% and it were analysed using SPSS (23). Qualitative data were analysed using constant comparison analysis and seven themes, fourteen categories and twenty two sub-categories emerged from the data analysis. Findings of the study revealed that the majority of PHC facilities were staffed by registered nurse midwives and nurse clinicians who were qualified, confident, knowledgeable and competent in the execution of duties. Generally there were a large number of patients that sought ART services which were offered on a weekly basis although there was variation in the actual number of days the services were provided. The time patients spent seeking ART services varied across the facilities and ARVs and other drugs were usually available. Challenges in the delivery of ART services included unsatisfactory staffing resulting in the provision of inadequate services and work overload, lack of knowledge of some patients, use of incentives by some partners and too many partners being involved in ART, inadequate documentary evidence and stigma pertaining to the HIV status of individuals. Furthermore, ARVs were reported to make patients feel hungry hence resulting in lack of satisfaction in ART services, ART services were inadequate due to dysfunctional equipment and some patients had been lost due to inability to screen for cancer and there was incomplete monitoring and evaluation of the ART program. However, participants in this study generally showed their acknowledgement of the ART services as they generally improved their health status despite the many challenges that were being faced. / Health Studies / D.Litt.et Phil. Role of knowledge management enablers in facilitating knowledge management practices in selected private higher education institutions in BotswanaMakambe, Ushe 02 1900 (has links)
This research was set out to investigate the role of knowledge management as a coping strategy for PHE institutions in Botswana, especially given that they operate in a highly regulated environment. One of the major drivers of volatility in the educational sector is
intensely volatile regulatory environment in which the institutions operate. Further, a large portion of the stakeholder community of these institutions hold a strong believe that these institutions offer poor quality education to maximise profit. The primary objective of this
study is therefore to determine the role of knowledge management (KM) enablers in facilitating KM practices in selected PHE institutions in Botswana that operate in this highly regulated environment and to develop a model for effective KM in these institutions. The study adopted a survey research design and collected quantitative data through a structured self-administered questionnaire and document reviews. The subjects comprised all five degree-awarding PHE institutions, which were strictly regulated by the Tertiary
Education Council (TEC). The population surveyed came to 670 and sample size was 350. Data was analysed through various statistical measures such as Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) in the form of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), multiple regression analysis, and Chi-square test. The results of the study revealed that KM enablers were playing an insignificant role in facilitating KM practices in selected PHE institutions in Botswana. Results of the study can be generalised to similar institutions elsewhere operating in similar environments. In order to enhance KM practices in PHE institutions, it is recommended that the institutions adopt a systematic approach to KM, establish an organisational culture and structure that promote KM practices, and enhance the quality of their human capital including leadership. It should be noted that the state of KM in organisations operating in an uncertain environment can be enhanced if the leadership carefully controls the family-owned setting and organisational culture as these factors can detract from the organisation’s effective practising of KM. However, strategic leadership, organisational structure, and the role played by stakeholders played positive deterministic factors in ensuring an enhanced KM drive. / Business Management / D.Admin.
