Var är kvinnorna i litteraturhistorien? : En komparativ studie av hur kvinnliga författare framställs i två upplagor av Svenska Timmar – litteraturen / Where are the women in the history of literature? : A comparative analysis of how female authors are depicted in two editions of Svenska Timmar – litteraturen

Landahl, Hedvig January 2014 (has links)
This essay examines how female authors are described in the literary canon of two different editions of the Swedish education material on the history of literature: Svenska Timmar – litteraturen. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the depiction of female authors has changed from the first edition (1991) to the last edition (2012), and how these changes correspond with the curriculums Lgy70 and Lgy11. The study is quantitative as well as qualitative. The quantitative part of the study shows that the percentage of female authors has increased in the 2012 edition. A greater number of female authors are also portrayed with pictures and headings. This increase is partly explained by the new curriculum, Lgy11, which demands that female authors should be included in the history of literature. This was not the case with Lgy70. The qualitative part of the study contains a feminist and gender analysis, examining how a “gender system” produces and reproduces a dichotomy and hierarchy between the sexes, where the male is norm and the female deviates from this norm. This section shows that, despite the increased number of female authors, their portrayal still differs from that of the male authors. For example, the literary work of women is likely to be categorized as “female literature”, which signals that it is not considered as general as the men’s work. This is, in my conclusion, a way to reproduce the gender system of the literary canon. Kvinnornas civilstånd fokuseras i större utsträckning än männens i båda upplagorna.

The Xenophon’s Cyropaedia, written in the fourth century B.C., it is a work of hybrid character, in which fiction and history mingle with a lot of freedom. Because of this, it has been discussed what would be the best genre classification for the work: biographical novel, work of historiography, historical novel. This dissertation investigates the extent to which Cyropaedia Xenophon's narrative has elements that allow us to recognize aspects of her romance genre, specifically the “Novel of Education” (Bildungsroman), genre whose paradigm is in the work Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (1795-1796). First, we looked to define to what extent we can read the Cyropaedia as a work of fiction, and not as a work of historiography, from reflections on the relationship between Literature and History, and mainly through a comparative analysis between the narrative of Cyropaedia and the narrative of Herodotus’ Histories. We realize that Xenophon fictionalizes the narrative established by Herodotus, whether taking up subjects, or alluding to the Herodotus' narratives. Then, starting from the Bakhtin's notion that every genre preserves, in the structure, formal elements of archaica, that not only characterize the genre in the form distinctive, but also allows its renewal every new literary manifestation, we tried to define which essential elements present in modern novel of education we can find in Cyropaedia. We analyze scenes where are evident the action of mentors, the presence of an educational institution, the theological view of education. Moreover, an important characteristic essential of the “Novel of Education” is the presence of a dynamic and evolutionary character, that get formation in the course of the narrative. We analyzed the construction and evolution of the main character of the narrative... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The research examined how these three elements appear in the stories of Primeiras Estórias e Tutaméia-Terceiras Estórias. We also analyzed his interviews, as well as letters exchanged with friends, relatives and family, and notes recorded in diaries, notebooks and studies for the work. This research aims to demonstrate that the historical culture of an individual is not formed only by the school or academic knowledge, but by a wide range of knowledge and interests that lie beyond the historiography and history itself. This dissertation considers that there is, in Guimarães Rosa´s work, a constant need of evasion of time. The author criticizes the history in that it favors the study on momentary and deeply desecrated events. Memory becomes, in his work as a literary resource whose purpose is to restore the sacred dimension to events. This study is linked to the research line "History Teaching and Historical Knowledge" of Paraíba Federal University Post Graduation Program, with a major in History and Historical Culture , and intends to analyze the readings and experiences that guided the statements made by Guimarães Rosa, throughout life, "against the story."

O surgimento do comércio de romances ingleses nas lojas do Rio de Janeiro: dos requerimentos à Vossa Majestade aos armazéns de \'commodo preço\' / The emergence of trade English of novels in Rio de Janeiro stores: of the requirements the Your Majesty to the warehouses commodo preço

Daniela Montenegro de Souza 02 July 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the circulation of English novels in Rio de Janeiro in the first three decades of the nineteenth century. The documents of the Mesa do Desembargo do Paço (the institution responsible for the censorship and liberation of books) in Rio de Janeiro will be used in order to bring light to the booksellers who were responsible for the importation of English novels as well as to highlight which of these novels were bestsellers. For an overview of the trade of English novels in Rio de Janeiro, the advertisements of two of the most important newspapers of the beginning of the nineteenth century will be taken into account: the Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro (1808 1821) and the Diário do Rio de Janeiro (1821 1831)

« Le sentier de l’exemple » : morale et moralisation dans la nouvelle tragique en France de 1559 à 1630 / “Le sentier de l’exemple” : morality and moralisation of the tragic short story in France between 1559 and 1630

Catel, Thibault 09 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to show how exemplarity allows for a fresh analysis of the morality of tragic short stories, known as “histoires tragiques”, between the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th. The ”histoires tragiques” are neither just “histoires de loi” nor sensationalistic stories, and exemplarity helps us find a middle way between the former’s moralism and the later’s immorality. The morality of the “histoires tragiques” essentially works through examples: on this basis, we first put into perspective the crisis that exemplarity is thought to be going through during the Early modern period. We then argue that, through moral exemplarity, we can understand how the “histoires tragiques” take after the two moral “genres” of history and tragedy. Lastly, we study the limits of this exemplarity, which mainly proceeds from the seduction of bad examples and extraordinary cases that seem to be in contrast with commun moral. As the “histoires tragiques” don’t rely anymore on the repetition of similar exemples, this singularity of cases can be seen as a mean to renew exemplarity.

Daughters of the book: A study of gender and ethnicity in the lives of three American Jewish women

Sigerman, Harriet Marla 01 January 1992 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of the religious and ethical influences on the lives of three American Jewish women: Anzia Yezierska (ca. 1880-1970), immigrant-born author from the Lower East Side who gave poignant voice in her fiction to immigrant Jewish women's lives; Rose Pastor Stokes (1879-1933), immigrant-born political activist and an early member of the American Communist party; and Maud Nathan (1862-1946), an upper-class, American-born Jew who fought for female enfranchisement and better working conditions for store clerks and sweatshop women. In a thematic approach drawing comparisons among the three women, this study explores the role and impact of Jewish religion and values on their personal and professional life choices. Related to this main question are the following secondary questions: As deviant women--women who did not fulfill traditional gender and religious prescriptions for home-bound domesticity--how did these women negotiate their deviance within the Jewish and larger American communities? In their autobiographies, how did they present their lives, and to what extent did they reveal any awareness of the impact of their Jewish birthright upon their life choices? And how did their relations with the significant people in their lives--friends, families, and mentors--influence both their gender and Jewish consciousness? Through close reading of their writings, especially their autobiographies, augmented by selected theoretical work in the presentation of self, I examine how they each defined their Jewishness in ways consonant with their personal and professional aspirations, and how they all drew on their cultural, religious, and class values to play an active public role in their time.
