Reinvigorating landscapes: using natural environments to enhance quality of life in assisted living facilities

Holzum, Andrew January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Hyung Jin Kim / The senior population within the United States has increased by 1.5% from 2010-2014, whereas other demographics have either stayed the same or have decreased (US Census Bureau, 2014). Assisted living facilities focus on sustaining and enhancing the quality of life for the residents, and their physical and social environments should be modified to stimulate this focus. Studies have shown that is can be accomplished by increasing access to nature. Additionally, a diminished physical activity level among senior citizens is an additional research problem as it contributes to their quality of life. With these research problems in mind, the two research question being addresses are: How does access to nature affect physical activity levels of senior citizens living within assisted living facilities; and how can indoor and outdoor landscapes assist in promoting physical activity? To answer the research questions, the following aims were established in support of the research and design objectives of this study: (1) identify barriers limiting use, and (2) idenify how access to nature affects phyisical activity levels in senior citizens within assisted living facilities, (3) to improve access to nature, (4) to improve quality of outdoor spaces, and (5) to encourage outdoor activity. Research Methods include (a) focus group interviews and (b)an environmental audit to investigate user’s preferences of activities, existing access to nature, and barriers prohibiting the use of the natural environments, (c) literature analysis and research to identify relevant design strategies that have been used in similar studies, and in the design phase, this study synthesizes how design principals can be utilized to solve the identified issues. The findings were then used to create a matrix for design and to also develop design goals and solutions for Homestead. The result of this study identifies strategies used to overcome barriers limiting outdoor use. The focus group and staff interviews along with the environmental audit and the literature analysis findings were used for developing a framework for design. The design framework and research methods this study used could be applied at similar facilities based on the ability ranges of the residents to produce a design solution that encourages outdoor use and physical activity, and thus, enhance the quality of life of the residents in the assisted living facilities.

A question of whitewares : consumer behaviour and ceramics at Clark's Crossing, Saskatchewan

Gibson, Denise Patricia 16 September 2010
Clarks Crossing, FbNo-24, is a farmstead site occupied during the late nineteenth century by John Fowler and Maggie Clark. It was during the excavation of this site during the Department of Archaeology Historical Archaeology Field School (2002-2005) at the University of Saskatchewan, under the direction of Dr. Margaret Kennedy, that interesting patterns in the ceramic assemblage were observed. There seemed to be a preference in the assemblage for moulded relief decorated white granite ware ceramics. This research was undertaken to explore that preference and possible meanings behind it. Three avenues of study are undertaken to accomplish the goal of learning more about the relationship between ceramics, consumer behaviour and the sociocultural landscape of the nineteenth century west. These avenues are as follows; a historical and archaeological study of the Clarks and the site of Clarks Crossing, a discussion of white granite ware ceramics and the issues regarding its classification, and an analysis of the ceramics at Clarks Crossing including an examination of the ware types, the makers marks, and the decorative technique and images found on the ceramics.<p> The behaviour of consumers can be influenced by several factors, including marketing and group membership or identity. Marketing can be a separate influence but it can also be seen as a factor in creating a perceived group identity. This thesis explores the influences on consumer behaviour in ceramics, specifically the ceramics of Clarks Crossing. It will discuss the implication that the ware type and decorative images on the ceramics act as the material manifestation of such influences.

The financing of education in homestead areas

Turnbaugh, Lester 01 January 1935 (has links) (PDF)
Some explanation is necessary of the method of procedure in compiling material for this thesis. The first step was really taken seven years ago. At that time the writer interviewed state officials at Sacramento, California, in the hope of obtaining state aid for educational finance in the Tule Lake section of the Klamath Irrigation Project. The Governor, the department of education, and the finance department were all consulted, but no legal way was discovered of using state money for the erection of school buildings in the district mentioned. Some county money was available for payment of teachers’ salary, but none for building purposes. Chapter V will relate in some detail how that particular problem was solved. The main study began in the fall of 1934 and was carried on up to mid-summer, 1935, Letters of inquiry were sent to all states that had or still have homestead lands. These letters contained a statement of the financial problem peculiar to homestead areas during the period of “proving up” on homestead entries. They requested information as to whether any study of similar nature had ever been completed in the United States. They also requested a list of sources of information. Without exception, replies to these letters indicated that no such study had been made. While some replies contained suggestions as to sources of information, none gave any direct solution to the problem, or pointed to any source that did. These letters of inquiry were sent to state departments of education, to state universities, to historical societies, to the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, and Office of Education, and to individuals noted as specialists in school finance. WHile awaiting these letters, the writer searched general histories, stories of pioneering in the West, histories of education, and periodicals of magazine articles relating to homesteads. In this research the librarians of the College of the Pacific and of the State Library at Sacramento gave all the assistance possible. At no time, however, during the whole years’ study did the writer obtain any information dealing absolutely and directly with the problem at hand. It seemed best, therefore, to obtain as accurately as possible a general picture of methods of financing education in homestead states during those periods most likely to have been affected by lack of finances for a building program. IN addition to this general study, a specific study was made of homestead areas now going through those five difficult years. This was done by means of personal visitation, by assistance of pamphlets and letters from superintendents of irrigation projects, and from educators now struggling with the perplexing difficulties of financing education in homestead areas. It was from these school men and from the writer’s own experience that information was received dealing directly with this special problem. The writer regrets that he could not visit the great homestead states east of the Rockies to obtain first hand a more direct knowledge of how the problem was handled there forty to sixty years ago. It is likely that pioneers still living could tell how the problem was solved, or was not solved, as the case might be. Also private letters, school minutes preserved, and similar unpublished documents might give valuable information. It is to be hoped that this research may be made and the material found summarized before available sources have passed out of existence.
