Through an Open Window

Bingham, Christie 05 1900 (has links)
The poems in this collection are elegiac; celebrations of losses and failures, tributes to the daily doldrums that are at the center of human experience. They threaten to expose the uncertainty that exists and refuses to exist in our everyday lives. They explore the otherness associated with the individual and often turn to the universal formulas of music and physics to make order of the world around them. Often times the Speaker finds that the seeming chaos manifests within her already orderly life, the daily routines of work and family. Poetic magic, so to speak, weds this ordered chaos to the laws of nature and its routines, especially birds, which makes a recurrent appearance throughout the manuscript.

The Impact of E-scooters in Stockholm Public Spaces / Konsekvenser av elsparkcyklar i Stockholms offentliga miljöer

Rachmanto, Adinda Smaradhana January 2020 (has links)
One of the most popular types of micromobility is an electric scooter (e-scooter). An emerging phenomenon occurred in many places, including Stockholm. Regardless of some positive claims about e-scooters in urban areas, e-scooters also contribute to new urban problems. Some of the problems occurred in public spaces, and those issues are widely discussed among inhabitants. Therefore, this thesis will investigate how the presence of e-scooters affected the sidewalk environment around Stockholm captured from the experience of pedestrians and e-scooter users. The experiences will be captured through a survey and follow-up interviews with pedestrians and e-scooter riders and analysed from an urban design perspective and under sidewalk design criteria. The findings showed that pedestrians and e-scooter users have various perspectives while experiencing e-scooters in the sidewalk environment. Some of the experiences also affected pedestrian decisions to walk on the sidewalks. The recommendations of this study could be used further to minimise the clash in the sidewalk environment, by integrating not only the design aspects but also policy and user behaviour.

Barretta, João Paulo F 28 November 2007 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joao Paulo F Barretta.pdf: 1027000 bytes, checksum: 00e7b78fd29fddd5e78195ac9fcc37ae (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-11-28 / The main aim of this work is to iluminate Heidegger s ontological criticism of the freudian theory, which was collected by Medard Boss in the Zollikon s Seminars (1987). This criticism can only be understood in the light of the developments made by the philosopher in relation to Husserl s phenomenology. The main point is that Heidegger had investigated, in the 1920 s, the way of being of human beings, in order to have access to the fundamental question of the meaning of being in general (Seinsfrage). Such a procedure brought Heidegger to the development of a fundamental ontology which has psique as its subject matter. Therefore, he is able to approach phenomenologically something which is only implicit in the freudian theory. This one is concerned itself explicitly with certains pathologicals (neurotical symptoms) and non-pathologicals (dreams, misbehaviors, lapsos linguae etc) psiquic processes, on the base of which it developed a model of the mental functioning. Based on this common subject matter, Heidegger will criticize Freud for not having understood correctly the meaning of being of the psiquic, for having done an objetification, that means, for having understood it in the light of the unproper category of substance. Notwithstanding, both the philosopher nor the specialists after him, succeeded in identifying which substance is the psiquism in Freud s theory. What we intend to show is that for him it is an irritable substance. This is a caracterization that comes from the XIX century s physiology. Such a substance should further be understood in the light of physical (physicalism) and biological (darwinism) concepts. With this caracterization we were able then to contrast Freud s way of conceiving psiquism with Heidegger s proposal, that is to say, to contrast the concepts of irratable substance and fundamental openness. This can only be properly understood thou on the base of the differences in the way each one of the autors here in question understands what does it means to have an experience. The concept of experience plays, therefore, a decisive role, as we tried to show, in the determination of the being of the psiquic / Este trabalho teve por objetivo fundamental explicitar a crítica ontológica de Heidegger à teoria freudiana, compilada por Medard Boss nos Seminários de Zollikon (1987).

Batista, Luís Otávio 23 May 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T18:22:31Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Luis Otavio Batista.pdf: 3084032 bytes, checksum: f8686ad7def8ac760f86885bebcf938c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-23 / This study aims at describing and interpreting two phenomena of human experience: developing-operating an online course based on the Complexity Theory and reflection on the teaching and learning of the English Language. These phenomena were investigated, from a course entitled Virtual Classroom: English teachers are (in)-formed on the teaching profession, broadcast by the platform TelEduc, from August to December 2009 and involving 18 students of Arts/English, from a public state university, located in Midwestern Brazil. Considering this study was based on the Complex Thinking (MORIN, 2000, 2007, 2008), which assumes that the knowledge, events and phenomena are woven together, I had the concern to build a coherent work based on this new epistemological dimension with a new methodological approach which was also complex. Moreover, I had the task of producing activities, using the cognitive operators of Complexity, since they helped me to put the complex knowledge into practice. So, I resorted to a qualitative methodological orientation, whose object of study is the human experience. This methodological alternative is called Hermeneutic-Phenomenological Approach (FREIRE, 1998, 2007, 2008) and aims at searching for the essence of one or several human experiences through the identification of hermeneutic-phenomenological themes. This methodological orientation uses texts as a comprehension procedure, because they capture lived experiences. Thus, to interpret the two phenomena, in order to come to their themes, the designer, teacher-educator and researcher s journal, as well as textual activities produced by the students, using some tools from the TelEduc environment, served as textual records. The contributions of this research to the area of teacher education are enormous, especially because it takes innovative and contemporary methodological and epistemological constructs, which break with the models of teacher training based on the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm and privilege the homogeneities, the centralities and the lack of difference (GIMENEZ, 2011, p. 52), as well as the bias, the objectivities, predictabilities, the neutralities, the linearities and certainties. On the other hand, from such a perspective, the investigated phenomena were understood from a systemic, dynamic, nonlinear, unpredictable, recursive, hologramatic and dialogical point of view / O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever e interpretar dois fenômenos da experiência humana: a elaboração-operacionalização de um curso online com base na Teoria da Complexidade e a reflexão sobre o ensino e aprendizagem de Língua Inglesa.

Being storied; a lived experience in time : an exegesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Day, Catherine January 2009 (has links)
Being storied; a lived experience of time discusses selected aspects of the research and studio practice undertaken in the course of the year 2008. Central to the process has been attending to the mundane acts of everyday life in the rural environment in which I live. It discusses actions such as walking, listening, collecting and documenting as well as experiments with a waste material, used baling plastic that is installed in various ways into the landscape. Parallel to this are investigations with sound and text, which have drawn on my varied musical background. There is an exploration of time - the idea of durée, human experience of time, quality of attention through intense focus, and memory as it accumulates over time. Art of the everyday has also been a key area of research. Life changing events have occurred during the course of the year. The death of parents has substantially influenced the work. The practice described is multi-faceted, involving the use of text, sound, photography and film.

Proclaiming the Glory of God. A Homiletical approach

De Kiewit, Charles 22 June 2007 (has links)
The intention of this research is to develop a homiletical approach that will better equip the preacher in proclaiming the Glory of God. The study comes in a context where there has been a legitimate shift in emphasis in the direction of the listener, but it is the contention of this study that the pendulum has swung away from the pre-eminence of God that should permeate sermons being preached. Having established the need for a renewed apprehension of God in preaching the writer examines the general preaching landscape leading up to and including the 21st century. This part of the study includes some of the influences on the present day understanding on the role of knowledge and the questioning of God’s ability to communicate truth to man. The study also shows how these influences have led to a focus in preaching on human feeling and experience. The weight of Gods glory is then examined with the consequent implication of God’s passion for His own glory and the need for all preaching therefore to be Theo-centric. This is reinforced by an examination of the transcendence of God, unfolding the dangers of domesticating God by eliminating a sense of mystery as to the infinite nature of God. An overview of more recent developments in homiletical theory is examined demonstrating the conspicuous absence of the pre-eminence of God in preaching. A summary of the following three preaching models is presented; expository, narrative and topical, to provide a basis for later comparison. Key theological convictions and practices necessary to proclaim the Glory of God are then identified from the literature study. These are then used in a questionnaire compiled to be used in churches where the listeners are exposed to the three identified preaching models. The results from the empirical study is then analysed in the light of the theory presented in the literature studies. On the basis of these outcomes the following guidelines were recommended: -- Guidelines on determining the content of the sermon. -- Guidelines on the focus of the sermon. -- Guidelines on the content of the sermon. -- Guidelines on believing that God is primarily concerned about Himself leading to greater confidence in God’s grace to sinful people. And then finally, concluding that if the desired goal of proclaiming the Glory of God is to be consistently accomplished, then the expository model of preaching is best suited to the task. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Attefall-house - Greater than the sum of its parts?

Granat, Jacob January 2015 (has links)
Attefall-house: Greater than the sum of its parts? I am exploring how to create a small scale space which is more than just a functional space, a space that also provides an architectural experience. I am using the Swedish Attefall-house as a case study. This small, permit-free construction comes with a frame and it has clearly defined rules and limitations. The smallness of it allows for experimentation and in the normally hard-regulated Swedish building climate, it provides an opportunity to try out ideas without having to be too serious. I am trying to create this sensory experience by fusing function and context together with selected architects’ and artists’ ideas. What happens when these seemingly disparate ingredients combine? Will the whole be greater than the sum of its parts?

Lifetime

Kuchenbecker, Emily E 01 January 2019 (has links)
Time is my bully. Time marks the start of something, as well as the end. We are all carrying out the inexorable passing of time as it relates to our impending mortalities. I do not fear death. The awareness of my body’s impermanence employs me to feel that much more connected to the vessel containing that of which I am. But what am I? Am I my body- or is it much deeper? Through the work executed during my graduate research, I have attempted to quantify my existence through the archiving my time and body. This document ushers you through my perception, my relationship to nature, and how it manifests through discovering answers to what I believe it means to be human.

A Holistic Approach to the Ontario Curriculum: Moving to a More Coherent Curriculum

Neves, Ana Cristina Trindade 14 December 2009 (has links)
This study is an interpretive form of qualitative research that is founded in educational connoisseurship and criticism, which uses the author’s personal experiences as a holistic educator in a public school to connect theory and practice. Key research questions include: How do I, as a teacher, work with the Ontario curriculum to make it more holistic? What strategies have I developed in order to teach a more holistic curriculum? What kinds of difficulties interfere with my practice as I attempt to implement my holistic philosophy of education? This dissertation seeks to articulate a methodology for developing holistic curriculum that is in conformity with Ontario Ministry guidelines and is also responsive to the multifaceted needs of the whole student. The research findings will serve to inform teachers who wish to engage in holistic education in public schools and adopt a curriculum that is transformative while still being adaptable within mainstream education.
