Figueiredo, Arlan Pacheco January 2017 (has links)
Duplex stainless steels (DSS) are materials widely used for a variety of applications from the chemical, food, petrochemical, marine, pharmaceutical, nuclear industry and other fields due to the combination of their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Particularly in the petrochemical industry, the DSS’s steels are extensively used as structural materials for the construction of gas pipelines that carry high volumes of CO2 and making the inner layers of flexible pipes (pipelines offshore) used in offshore oil production. The arc welding of DSS's can lead, depending on cooling rates involved, the formation of second phase precipitates which degrade their mechanical properties. An alternative method to avoid the problem of precipitation of unwanted phase is to use the welding process Friction Hydro Pillar Processing (FHPP). The aim of this work is the metallurgical and mechanical characterization of joints welds of UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel obtained through FHPP processes and Friction Taper Stitch Welding (FTSW). In FTSW welding, the objective of the study was to verify the influence of the welding step on the formation and alteration of structures and mechanical properties. The test results were compared with the properties of the obtained base material "as received". From the welds joints obtained by friction welding, specimens for microtensile testing and charpy were extracted to evaluate the mechanical strength and toughness. Microstructural analysis in optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microhardness profiles along the weld region were also performed. It was found that the welding process FHPP and FTSW causes an intense grain refinement in bonding zone, modifying the lamellar structure of elongate grains of matrix ferritic/austenitic, caused by action of heating and plastic deformation arising from the welding process by friction. The results of the microtensile tests indicate that the welded joints increased their mechanical resistance with respect to the base material, due to the increase in the amount of the ferrite in the thermomechanically affected zone (ZTMA), the formation of chromium nitrides in the center of ferritic grains and grain refining. The increase in the amount of ferrite in the ZTMA occurs due to the high cooling rates involved in the welding process and verified by thermal analysis. The high cooling rates difficult the nitrogen diffusion, which plays an important role in the phase equilibrium of the duplex structure (ferrite-austenite) in welding. The nitrogen trapped inside the ferritic grain produces chromium nitrides ceasing to act as gamogenic element by increasing the amount of the ferrite phase. The welds joints verified also had acceptable ductility and toughness according required by standard ASTM A923.

Etude de la toxicité cutanée et respiratoire des alcools dans les produits hydro-alcooliques d’hygiène des mains / Study of the cutaneous and respiratory toxicity of alcohols in hand hygiene alcohol-based hand rubs

Manche, Monique 15 December 2017 (has links)
Hand hygiene (HH) is a key factor in preventing healthcare-associated infections. Current practices favor the use of alcohol-based hand rubs (AbHR), generally formulated with ethanol, propan-2-ol and/or propan-1-ol, in the presence of co-formulants for a better skin acceptability. The antimicrobial efficiency within a short time, essential because of the frequent situations of HH practice, is achieved by high levels of alcohols which can exceed 80% w/w. This raises the question of dermal and respiratory toxicity associated with the use of AbHR. The assessment of dermal toxicity based on published data and in vitro skin irritation (OECD 439) and phototoxicity tests (OECD 432) conclude to non acute dermal irritation and phototoxicity risk linked to dermal exposure to these alcohols, even in the presence of co-formulants, as provided in the AbHR. We encountered in our trials the possible lack of specificity, already described in the literature, of the reconstructed human epidermis (RhE) models for some substances, which should be kept in mind in the context of the evaluation of skin irritation in vitro. Additional investigations and an assessment using the Weight of Evidence approach may be useful before concluding the irritant properties of a test item. In terms of genotoxicity, a difference between the alcohols emerges from the bibliographic review, with genotoxic properties described only for ethanol. To a certain extent, our tests confirmed a difference in profile. Propan-2-ol and propan-1-ol tested in a battery of in vitro tests to explore the various genotoxic mechanisms (Ames test and micronucleus test (MN) on p53 competent human cells: lymphoblastoid cells TK6 and pulmonary cells NCI H292) gave negative results, even in the presence of co-formulants, or administered as vapors on air-liquid interface (ALI) NCI H292 cells. For ethanol, the same battery of tests gave equivocal results only in the MN test on TK6 cells with ethanol alone. An additional MN test on TK6 cells co-cultured with a RhE mimicking the existing skin barrier gave negative results. In addition, no significant systemic exposure to alcohols induced by HH practices is apparent from published studies in humans, with indiscernible levels of existing endogenous values for ethanol and isopropanol. All of these data support the absence of an increased systemic genotoxic risk resulting from the use of AbHR and the absence of local pulmonary genotoxicity due to exposure to alcohol vapors. In conclusion, during AbHR use for HH, no risk to human health in terms of acute skin irritation, phototoxicity and genotoxicity is apparent from this research.

This hydrographic basin is of great importance to the national scenery of Brazil (since it is located between the two largest cities of the country). It was choosen as the focus of this study because it was a pioneer experience in implementing a Management System of Hydro Resources in rivers of Union domain, having as background the complexity of Brazilian federalism and the lack of tradition in participative processes of making decisions in this field. This study shows how the fact of charging for the use of water was an agglutinative factor for all the actors in the basin, how the accumulative social capital was fundamental for the negotiation process, and finally how the use of technical information, contrary to what was expected, led to significant advances in methodology and criteria proposed for implementation of this important instrument of water management.

Couplages thermo-hydro-mécanique et localisation dans les milieux de Cosserat : application à l'analyse de stabilité du cisaillement rapide des failles / Thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings and strain localization in Cosserat continua : application to stability analysis of rapid shear in faults

Rattez, Hadrien 30 November 2017 (has links)
When materials are subjected to large deformations, most of them experience inelastic deformations. It is often accompanied by a localization of these deformations into a narrow zone leading to failure. One particular case of strain localization is the formation of shear bands which are the most common patterns observed in geomaterials. In geological structures, they appear at very different scales, from kilometer scale for subduction zones, to micrometric scale inside fault cores. Studying their occurrence and evolution is of key importance to describe the failure of geomaterials and model seismic slip for mature crustal faults. The pressure and temperature conditions in these faults and the interaction with the pore water inside a highly fractured materials highlight the importance of different physical processes involved in the nucleation of earthquakes. In this thesis, we study the occurrence and evolution of shear bands inside fault gouges taking into account the material microstructure by resorting to elastoplastic Cosserat continua and also the effect of thermo-hydro mechanical couplings. The use of Cosserat theory introduces information about the gouge microstructure, namely the grain size, and permits to regularize the mathematical problem of in the post-localization regime by introducing an internal length into the constitutive equations. Two approaches are used to study the coupled non-linear partial differential set of equations: linear stability analysis and finite element simulations. Linear stability analysis allows to study the occurrence of localized deformation in a mechanical system with multi-physical couplings. Considerations on the dominant wave length of the perturbations permit also to determine the width of the localized zone. This shear band thickness is confirmed by numerical integration in the post-localization regime for a certain range of deformation. The obtained widths of the localized zone are key parameters for understanding fault behavior, are in agreement with experimental and field observations. Moreover, numerical finite element computations enable to model the mechanical response of a fault gouge during seismic slip and give insights into the influence of various physical couplings on the energy budget

Ribeiro, Ricardo Feyh January 2014 (has links)
Corrosion impacts annually in environmental risks, loss of human life and high financial costs. Thus, the prevention and the control became mandatory for safe and profitable operation of metal structures. Therefore, the maintenance of acceptable levels of corrosion depends essentially on a greater understanding of the corrosion phenomena and investments in new technologies. The petroleum industry often relies on the UNS S31803 stainless steel in their structures, due to the good mechanical and corrosion resistance of this material. Even though it is considered to be an alloy of good weldability, it is still possible to have heterogeneities, defects and formation of deleterious phases after the welding, which may result in the weakening of the corrosion resistance of the joint. Friction hydro pillar process, arise as a good and recent alternative to the offshore industry, due to its inherent qualities. Therefore, the aim of this study is to individually evaluate the corrosion resistance of the main regions (base materials from the pin and from the subtract and the thermo-mechanically affected zone) of the duplex stainless steel UNS S31803 joint welded by FHPP, against synthetic seawater in the naturally aerated condition, in order to identify potential impairment of the corrosion resistance of these joints. For this, it was developed a three electrode electrochemical cell with reduced dimensions (microcell). This way, the main regions of the welded joint could be analyzed separately with cyclic potenciodinâmica polarizations. It was obtained the corrosion (Ecor), pitting (Eq) and protective (Eprot1 and Eprot2) potentials, along with the Tafel slopes (ba and bc) and corrosion (icor) and passivity breakdown (iq) current densities. Based on these observations, it is believed that the welded joint present good electrochemical behavior in all its regions.

Analysis of criteria to the remaining flows definition in hydroelectric plants.

Luciana de Deus Melo 01 April 2011 (has links)
Worldwide, the demand for energy has been increasing. In Brazil, with the economy warming up in the last years, the demand for energy supply further increased. The Brazilian power generating facilities are heavily based on hydroelectric generation, which represents 77,6% of the total generated electricity. Among the environmental impacts caused by the construction of dams and reservoirs are the changes on downstream discharges, known as the remaining discharge. This discharge should ensure the appropriate conditions to the survival and perpetuation of ecosystems, linking human and wild life needs of each region. In this respect, two case studies are taken as object of analysis: (1) a small hydroelectric power plant Santa Gabriela, located in Correntes river, in the limits of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul States; (2) the hydropower plant Batalha, in São Marcos river, in the limits of Minas Gerais and Goiás States. Although its been observed that this issue is widely discussed by technical and academic communities, no legal framework or an explicit definition, or criteria, or limit values has been identified for the establishment of the remaining discharge in hydroelectric power plant projects. Generally, values have been defined based on criteria adopted in states water use rights acts that define minimum discharge parameters based on time series frequency analysis such as Q90%, Q95% or Q7, 10. These methodologies imply on a single value discharge throughout the year, which does not reflect the variability of natural hydrological regime. Current studies lead to an, so called, ecological hydrogram, which would represent discharges variability during drought and flood periods. The methodology of analysis in which the discussion presented in this master dissertation was based, involved the comparison of values obtained by different water use rights criteria adopted in some states like Q90%, Q95% and Q7, 10 and, methods quoted in the literature to define the ecological discharge (Tennant, Texas, Base Flow and Wetted Perimeter), as well as National Water Agencys (ANA) declarations related to the Water Availability Reserve Statement (WARS) which specifies remaining dischargesflow for the reservoir filling and operating phases. It was observed that the application of the different methods in the two case studies resulted in significantly different values for the definition of the remaining discharge. However, its worth to note that the publication of the Guidelines for Water Availability Study for Hydroelectric Power Plants (ANA, 2009) that aims the standardization of documents to obtain WARS and granting the use of water for energy generation purposes in federal jurisdiction represents an advance in these matters. By that, the developer may propose and negotiate water demands for wild life needs with the involved authorities, which should be discussed in the initial technical meeting that will count on the National Electrical Energy Agency (ANEEL), ANA, the related environmental agency, the developer and the organization/agency responsible for the environmental studies.

Reconfiguração de redes de distribuição em situações de contingências considerando operação ilhada de PCH / Reconfiguration of distribution network in contingency conditions considering islanded operation of small hydro power plant

Lopes, Guilherme Stivanin 22 August 2014 (has links)
One of the main concerns of the power utilities is secure, continuously supplying electric power to customers, thus meeting so satisfy these as to regulatory requirements. Thus, the proposed paper presents a method of restoring the electric power supply applying the concepts of automatic reconfiguration of the aggregate distribution networks the possibility of islanded operation of small hydro (SHP), since the use of PCH so islanded in certain circumstances, or becomes only, or the best solution to be adopted in a contingency situation in order to reduce the impact of unwanted interruptions. Since the intrinsic decision making process of reconfiguration of distribution networks involves multiple objectives and constraints, the proposed methodology uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, which is a very useful tool for issues involving multicriteria decision taken. Additionally, case studies for analysis and validation of the proposed methodology are presented.

Analysis of long-term closure in drifts excavated in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone : roles of anisotropy and hydromechanical couplings / Comportement différé de galeries dans l'argilite du Callovo-Oxfordien : rôles de l'anisotropie et des couplages hydromécaniques pour le dimensionnement des ouvrages

Guayacan Carrillo, Lina María 09 December 2016 (has links)
The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) began in 2000 the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) with the main goal of demonstrating the feasibility of a geological repository in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Several research programs have taken place to improve the knowledge of the rock properties and its response to the excavation progress. A network of experimental drifts has been constructed with variations on: excavation method, structure geometry, supports system and orientations with respect to principal stresses’ directions. In each drift different sections have been instrumented to monitor the hydro-mechanical behavior of the rock mass formation. Continuous monitoring of the excavated zone around the drifts in the main level (-490 m) revealed the development of a fractured zone (extensional and shear fractures) induced by the excavation. The extent of this fractured zone depends on the drift orientation regarding the in-situ stress field. Accordingly, the convergence measurements showed an anisotropic closure which depends also on the drifts’ orientations. Moreover, marked overpressures and an anisotropic pore pressure field around the drifts have been also observed. The approach proposed in this work is mainly based on a direct analysis of the convergence measurements, for studying the anisotropic response of the rock formation during and after excavation. The convergence evolution is analyzed on the basis of the semi-empirical law proposed by Sulem et al. (1987) [Int J Rock Mech Min Sci Geomech Abstr 24: 145–154]. The monitoring and analysis of convergence data can provide a reliable approach of the interaction between rock mass and support. Therefore, the anisotropy and the variability of the closure are analyzed taking into account different field cases: drifts excavated in two different orientations (i.e. influence of the initial stress state), different methods, sizes and rates of excavation and different supports systems with different conditions of installation. This broad range of cases permits to refine the analysis for reliable predictions of the convergence evolution in the long term. This approach can thus be used for the design of various types of support and the evaluation of its performance in the long term.On the other hand, the pore pressure evolution induced by excavation of drifts as recorded in situ has been analyzed. The anisotropic response observed in-situ suggests that the intrinsic anisotropy of the material plays a key role in the response of the rock formation. To understand these phenomena, an anisotropic poroelastic analysis of the pore pressure evolution induced by the drift excavation is performed. The main goal is to simulate the main trends of the pore pressure evolution with a simple model taking into account the inherent anisotropy of the material. Finally, an analysis of the onset of failure shows the key role of the hydro-mechanical coupling on the extension of the failed zone around the drifts

Impacts morphologiques des aménagements hydroélectriques à l'échelle du bassin versant / Morphological impacts of hydropower and hydraulic structures in river

Alcayaga, Hernan 26 September 2013 (has links)
A literature review shows that this subject is one of the main issues in fluvial geomorphology today. It reveals the constants of different conceptual models that have been developed and in particular i) the dependence of geomorphological dynamics on hydrological flow regime and sediment supply conditions, ii) the ability of the system to adapt, in case of alteration in hydrological flow regime and sediment supply, and iii) the spread of these disturbances with the gradual attenuation of the effect of alteration downstream. In particular, we chose to study the effect of disturbances introduced by hydroelectric structures on the river morphology at the watershed scale by developing a conceptual river morphology model. The model outline was based on a, deliberately limited, description of hydrological regime and -sediment supply alterations, and on expert knowledge to predict the morphological evolution in alluvial rivers. The objective of this work was to determine the direction of evolution trajectories of the river morphology, trough representative variables that evolve from one dynamic equilibrium state to another. We tested the model on a representation of the Isère watershed, upstream of Grenoble, France (5818 km2), incorporating a description of the complex pattern of hydropower structures, built during the second half of the XXth century. The modelled changes in river morphology give results that are consistent with the observations. However, the model is limited by two strong assumptions: i) the initial equilibrium of the system and ii) the synchronisation of the disturbances. In the final section, we described the development of a simplified numerical model which aims to take into account the transient period between the dynamic equilibrium states. This model is used to evaluate the duration of the relaxation period for a river reach and validate the use of the channel-forming discharge concept that was used in the conceptual model. The model simulates the overlay of the disturbances, but in the current state it is not capable of modelling the kinetic propagation of the disturbances downstream into the watershed. fluvial morphology, watershed, hydrological flow regime, sediment supply, hydropower structures

[en] DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF A THERMO-HYDRO-MECHANICAL-CHEMICAL ITERATIVE COUPLING SCHEME AIMING THE GEOLOGICAL STORAGE OF CO2 / [pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO E APLICAÇÃO DE UM ESQUEMA DE ACOPLAMENTO TERMO-HIDRO-MECÂNICO-QUÍMICO ITERATIVO VISANDO O ARMAZENAMENTO GEOLÓGICO DE CO2

GUILHERME LIMA RIGHETTO 10 May 2018 (has links)
[en] Considering the increasingly complex scenarios of energy extraction, the study of coupled phenomena in porous media - notably thermal, hydraulic, chemical and mechanical - has been considered as essential in order to predict the behavior of geological media with regard to radioactive waste storage, CO2 geological storage, geomechanics of geothermal reservoirs and reservoir geomechanics. Thus, this work aims to develop a thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical iterative coupling scheme in order to simulate the geological storage of CO2, employing a compositional flow simulator (GEM) and a stress analysis program (ABAQUS or CHRONOS). The idealization of the coupling methodologies was carried out through the processes hydro-mechanical, thermo-hydro-mechanical and thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical, as well as the validations and applications in real cases. The validation cases, performed employing simplified single-phase models, presented satisfactory results regarding the hydro-mechanical and thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviors. Additionally to the validations, the thermo-hydro-mechanical and thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical schemes were applied in two real cases of CO2 geological storage reported by the literature, In Salah project (Algeria) and Utsira aquifer (Norway), respectively. In general, the results found, in both cases studied, accurately represented the behavior observed in the field, which in turn highlights the accuracy, robustness and applicability of the coupling schemes proposed in this work.
