Utváření Evangelického zpěvníku Českobratrské církve evangelické / Formation of Protestant Hymnbook of Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren

Formation of Protestant Hymnbook of Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren This diploma thesis presents the history of preparation of the new Protestant Hymnbook of Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB). Four chapters of this work include the work chronology in respectual departments, evolution of opinions and the final publication. The first chapter describes the oldest hymnbooks from 1918 (foundation of ECCB), second chapter studies the beginning of systematical work in departments in the years 1941 - 1950, the third chapter follows the work in the Department of Hymnology of the Synodal Council of ECCB in the years 1951 - 1979, when the new hymnbook was finally published. The fourth chapter concludes the thesis with the summary of reaction of the church after the publication of the new hymnbook, publication of the Appendix of the new hymnbook and describes the situation in present days. The whole thesis is finished with an interview with a contemporary witness, Mr. Jiří Otter, former secretary of the Synodal Council. His task was to superintend the press in Germany and he gave some photos to the author of this thesis (see Appendix). The whole thesis is based on archival materials found in the Archive of ECCB and National Archive in the first half of 2013.

Cette thèse prépare l’édition du corpus des hymnes chrétiennes liturgiques de langue grecque conservées par les sources papyrologiques trouvées en Égypte et datées entre le IVe et le IXe siècle. L’introduction définit les termes du sujet, fixe la terminologie poétique et liturgique et justifie les limites chronologiques et géographiques du corpus. La première partie (vol. I t. 1) expose les étapes de la constitution du corpus de la collecte des papyrus, établit le protocole d’identification et de sélection des papyrus et propose un classement croisant quatre principes, par document entier, par destinataire du culte, par modèle littéraire et par thème liturgique Une deuxième partie (vol. I t. 2) rassemble cinq études préparatoires à l’édition des papyrus, puis une étude illustrant les problèmes d’édition posés par neuf papyrus remarquables et une synthèse destinée au futur Dictionary of Hymnology. Elle comporte trois annexes détaillant l’apport des autres sources anciennes transmises par la tradition manuscrite au travail du papyrologue, les principes de la poésie religieuse byzantine de rythme accentuel et une liste des hymnographes chrétiens anciens de langue grecque, ainsi qu’une bibliographie générale. Un CD-ROM de planches numérisées de 21 papyrus servant à la datation paléographique ou éditées dans les études est joint (non communicable). Le vol. II (t. 1 et 2) contenant les éditions des 209 papyrus (avec présentation matérielle, bibliographie, édition du texte grec, reconstitution en grec normalisé, apparat critique) est communiqué au jury afin de permettre la discussion du classement proposé dans la thèse. / This thesis presents the preparation of an edition of christian liturgical hymns, in greek, on papyrological materials discovered in Egypt, dated between the 4th and 9th centuries. The introduction defines the subject, clarifies the liturgical and poetic terminology and determines the chronological and geographical boundaries of the corpus of 209 hymns. The first part of the first volume describes the steps in assembling the corpus, establishes a protocol for referencing the papyri and proposes four levels of classification: by document, by religious entity, by literary type and by liturgical topic. The second part of the first volume contains five preparatory studies for editions of the papyri, a paradigmatic study of the problems confronted in the editions of nine specific papyri and a general summary destined for an upcoming publication in the Dictionary of Hymnology. This first volume includes three annexes: a list of ancient sources whose texts survived through manuscript copies, a detailed description of the principles of rhythmic accents in byzantine religious poetry and a chronology of early christian hymnographers in the greek language. There is also a general bibliography at the end of the volume and a CD-ROM that contains digital images of 21 papyri that are either included in the preparotory studies or that served as paleographic paradigms for the dating of the materials. The second volume of the thesis contains editions of 209 papyri. These includes editions of the original greek texts, apparatus criticus, normalized editions of the greek texts and bibliographies. This second volume was provided to the jury only, in order to foster and support a discussion of the classification systems determined within the thesis.

Searching for the "Good Song" - Determining the quality of Christian songs within the polarities of worship

This thesis tries to answer the question what Christians should be singing in worship and why. The situation in many congregations is one of conflict around music and worship styles. The question is how these can be bridged and how worship leaders can be guided to make responsible choices about what is sung in Sunday worship. It is argued that what is sung, strongly influences the theology and faith of congregants. The thesis locates the discipline of hymnology within a hermeneutical approach to practical theology and tries to develop a theory to answer the question how to determine quality in Christian songs. The current discussions in practical theology and hermeneutics are examined for their relevance to hymnology, particularly some of the insights of Habermas, Gadamer and Ricoeur. Here particularly the idea of “dialogue” and “fusion of horizons” becomes relevant for bridging the divides in the conflicts around worship music. The dissertation examines biblical and church historical answers to the question of whether and what Christians should be singing. It becomes clear that the answers have varied widely during the course of church history, sometimes swinging between extremes. The next chapter looks at songs in the context of the worship service, their function within various parts of the service, and particularly looks at the dialectical poles of worship which should be kept in balance. Musical perspectives are discussed looking at ways to help people not formally trained in music to evaluate tunes. This theoretical section leads to a catalogue of criteria for “Good songs”: These are criteria for quality, for “Good Text”, such as biblical and theological value, how easily it is understood, whether it takes human experience seriously and its poetic value. Criteria for “Good Tune” include its level of difficulty, how heavily it depends on accompaniment, and its balance between the familiar and the interesting and new. The third category of criteria evaluate the match between text and tune in mood, rhythm and climax. The last category looks at the balance in the song between different polarities, such as, amongst others, the balance of past and present, cognitive and emotive elements, between challenge and affirmation, and between universal and particular emphases. This list of criteria is then tested on three songs each of four different songwriters: two traditional and two contemporary: Paul Gerhardt, Charles Wesley, Graham Kendrick and Noel Richards. In each case a background is given, an overview of their work as a whole and a detailed analysis of each song. In the end the criteria themselves are evaluated as to their usefulness and user-friendliness. The Belhar Confession and liturgy : a hymnological study

Much study regarding the Belhar Confession has been conducted already such as: The Belhar Confession in its historical context Plaatjies-van Huffel (2014), Chronicle of Conference Barman/ Belhar Consultation 18 and 19 October 2004 Hansen (2005), A gift from heaven-the receptions in the Belhar Confession in the period 1982-2000 and its ecumenical significance today Naudè (2003) and On violence, the Belhar Confession and human dignity Koopman (2008) to mention but a few. From preliminary observations and some initial research, it seems that there is still a need to do an indepth study on the liturgical function of the Belhar Confession in Music. The working hypothesis of this study is if the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa URCSA uses Belhar more in the liturgy, especially in singing it will have an impact on the congregations and members. In other words the working hypothesis is that there is a link between liturgy, here specifically hymn singing, and the formation of worshippers. If URCSA is expecting others to adopt this confession it is its responsibility to embrace it during worship in church and to the rest of the society outside church vicinities. The literature survey that will be carried out later in this study confirms this state of affairs and that there is thus indeed a huge research gap in this regard. Les indications musicales dans l’Orient chrétien du VIe au IXe siècle : l’apport des papyrus / Musical Indications on Christian Papyri between the 6th and 9th centuries

Les trois parties de cette thèse forment une unité pour défendre l’hypothèse de la présence de signes musicaux dans la transmission d’hymnes chrétiennes liturgiques durant la deuxième moitié du premier millénaire, ce qui ferait remonter de plusieurs siècles la naissance de la notation musicale chrétienne, ordinairement située au IXe siècle. Dans une première partie, la présentation d’un corpus papyrologique démontre l’existence de trois genres d’indications musicales écrites, les hirmoi utilisés, dès le VIe siècle, comme strophes-modèles dans le canon poétique, les modes de l’octoechos et des signes interlinéaires non identifiés. Dans une deuxième partie, la tradition manuscrite des hirmologia datés du Xe au XIIIe siècle, en grec et en d’autres langues liturgiques, a été rassemblée et étudiée afin d’y retrouver les hirmoi identifiés dans les papyrus et d’en reconstituer les mélodies. Enfin, dans une troisième partie, ces mélodies et leurs notations neumatiques ont été superposées au schéma rythmique des hirmoi et les signes non identifiés y ont été positionnés. Cette suite de présentations de corpus et de comparaisons sémiologiques et musicologiques a préparé l’analyse et les propositions d’interprétation des signes jusqu’alors non-identifiés. / The three parts of this doctoral dissertation combine to support the hypothesis that musical signs were used in the transmission of Christian hymns during the 5th – 10th centuries. In the first part, a papyrological corpus provides evidence of three types of musical indications: hirmoi, which were used as musical models for liturgical canon strophes, modal signs from the octoechos system and un-identified interlinear symbols. In the second part, several hirmoi identified in the papyri are located in hirmologia from the 10th – 13th centuries – liturgical books containing paleo-byzantine and medio-byzantine musical notations. The different versions of the melodies are compared and then transcribed into modern notation. In the final part, the strophe texts and unidentified symbols from the papyri are superimposed on the musical transcriptions in order to analyze and interpret the functions of the symbols.

Verbal Expressions of Reverence for St. John of Nepomuk in Vilém Bitnar's Saint-John- Questionnaire The goal of this thesis is a description of verbal expressions of reverence (legends, songs, prayers etc.) for St. John of Nepomuk in the Czech lands, which were collected by Výbor svatojanský in the questionnaire edited by Vilém Bitnar. This questionnaire was sent out to Czech and Moravian parishes at the occasion of the 200th anniversary of canonization of St. John of Nepomuk in 1929 and now it is deposited in the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature in Bitnar's estate. The mutual points in the questionnaire are seeked as well as regional specifics. These are situated into context of trends in religious life in the Czech lands in 1920s in general and also of relationship between contemporary Czech society and the Roman Catholic Church with reverence for St. John of Nepomuk. Bitnar's questionnaire is also situated into context of other Bitnar's scientific and publication activities. It also consists of knowing the characteristics of construction of this compendium, passing through the presentation of its hymnists profiles and through the assiduous study of its musical structure and literary composition, while being aware of some important constitutive characteristics that are used, such as the theological concepts. Looking for a missiology concept that shows to be more correlated with the theological content of this hymnal and the referral of various examples of incitement to the evangelist practice found within its songs, which leads to the comprehension of the relevancy of the Christian Harp in the liturgical life of confessional pentecostal churches in Brazil, and its bold presence as an efficient developer of missionary practice of these faith communities. / Esta dissertação pretende estudar a Harpa Cristã, um dos principais hinários protestantes nacionais, buscando identificá-la como instrumento de expansão da missão no pentecostalismo do Brasil, no período comprendido entre os anos 1910 e 1970, apreciando a história e a formação deste livro litúrgico na pretensão de compreender sua utilização como elemento motivador para a prática missionária das igrejas pentecostais brasileiras. Consiste também em conhecer as características da construção deste compêndio, passando pela apresentação do perfil de seus hinistas e pelo estudo aplicado da sua estrutura musical e sua composição literária, conhecendo, ainda, algumas de suas importantes características constitutivas, como os conceitos teológicos de que faz uso em seu discurso. A procura por uma conceituação missiológica que se mostre mais identificada ao conteúdo teológico deste hinário e a indicação de vários exemplos de incentivo à prática evangelística encontrados em suas canções conduzem à compreensão da relevante importância da Harpa Cristã na vida litúrgica das igrejas de confissão pentecostal no Brasil e da sua marcante presença como eficiente agente fomentador do exercício missionário dessas comunidades de fé.

The thesis analyzes the non-standard vowel length and shortness in the complete hymn book of Valentin Šubar, as it is presented in the edition published by the Utraquist Jiří Hanuš of Kronenfeld in 1612 (Knihopis K16012). Based on selected transliterated segments, the level of consistency in the marking of vowel quantity is identified, and the outcome is subsequently taken into account when interpreting individual non-standard forms. Consequently, the results of previous research on vowel length marking in the 17th century Czech prints are slightly modified and the incorrect datation of surviving exemplars of the hymn book is corrected.

The Journey Home: A Root-metaphor Analysis of the 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book

In 1840, apostle missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled, printed, and began distributing a hymnbook that eventually would become the basis for all subsequent LDS hymnbooks published in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This thesis, as a contribution to the literature of communication, book history, and hymnology, as well as the intellectual and cultural history of the early years of the LDS Church, focuses on analyzing the poetry of the 1840 Mormon Manchester hymnbook. Using qualitative root-metaphor analysis, the author identified and analyzed expressions, supporting an emergent journey root-metaphor. He then divided the expressions into eight categories, each describing important and distinct aspects of the Journey. These categories include the following: 1) the travelers, 2) the activities on the journey, 3) the way, 4) the destination, 5) the guide, 6) the invitation to come, 7) the motivations, and 8) the lost wanderers. This thesis is based on the assumption that cultures and religions can be understood through the stories they tell. The story of the journey as told through the poetry of the 1840 Manchester hymnbook illuminates one aspect of the religious experience of early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Taken together, the eight aspects of the journey root-metaphor identified in this thesis tell a story about LDS members as travelers on a journey home, who walk on a straight and narrow path, away from a dark and fallen world, through snares, darkness, and other dangers, toward a glorious destination where rest, joy, and other rewards await them. Ultimately the travelers must rise above this world and follow Christ to a place where they may live with God to serve and praise him ever more.

Liturgiese musiek as kommunikatiewe handeling in 'n post-moderne era

Worldwide liturgical music finds itself in a crisis. Liturgical music is made the scapegoat for everything that is wrong with liturgy, whereas the problems rather derive from the worship service as a whole, the theological thinking and the cultural environment in which the worship service is performed. Stereotyped liturgical forms, a cognitive verbalism, the demand for intelligibility, the loss of the poetic form of the liturgy, the disregard for symbols and rituals, the absence of visual and other art forms in the liturgy, the influence of the popular music culture and especially the lack of a profound theological reflection with regard to the essential place of music in the liturgy, are all contributing factors that have a negative influence on liturgical music. The worship service is surrounded by a postmodern culture, aspects of which might provide positive opportunities for the liturgy. A broader notion of rationality that includes the affective, non-cognitive dimensions of being human, opens up possibilities for the aesthetic, as well as the religious experience. The recognition of symbols, images, imagination and metaphors opens up new horizons for the worship service as Gesamtkunstwerk. Anti-foundationalistic thinking demands an open canon with regard to the liturgy and liturgical song. Ecumenicity as an expression of the postmodern 'global village' renders a plurality of liturgical and musical possibilities. Aspects that might influence the reception of liturgical songs and songbooks, such as a spirit of anti-authoritarianism must be borne in mind. The liturgical training of ministers of religion, especially with regard to their aesthetic formation must be given due attention. The reflection on liturgy with regard to the role of art and music as communicative acts, based on new theological insights, must come into full swing. Liturgical music can only be fully appreciated where liturgical renewal takes form in a comprehensive way and where theologically the space is opened up for music as a form of art that has the ability to communicate symbolically, especially that which defies clearcut definition - as such being a communicative act serving the gospel. / Liturgiese musiek verkeer wereldwyd in 'n krisis.
