William James et la psychologie des états seconds / William James and the psychology of altered states of consciousness

Trochu, Thibaud 10 March 2015 (has links)
William James (1842-1910) is a well-known figure in modern history of philosophy. Yet, the recently completed critical edition of his Complete Works and Correspondence (1985-2004, 28 volumes) has opened a path for fresh interpretations. In this respect, the author‟s archives housed at Harvard University unveil a "hidden part" of this figure. A historical analysis based on these sources enables us to draw novel hypotheses based on three main axes, namely: 1) The necessity to appraise this scientist‟s deep religious concerns which he partly inherited from his particular cultural and intellectual background; 2) The centrality of the “psychological” dimension of his early career, coupled with James‟s cardinal importance in the institutionalization of “scientific psychology” in late 19th-century Europe and America; 3) The idea of a subterranean "research program" which he put forth, dealing with the so-called “psychology of altered states of consciousness". From these three points of views, James emerges as a crucial actor within an international movement focused on the scientific study on "subconscious" phenomena centered on themes of “hypnotism", somnambulism" and trance phenomena. We suggest exploring his thinking about what he called the "most important discovery made by psychologists" throughout his career, while considering his numerous works as well as his voluminous correspondence with foreign scientists and physicians such as G. Stanley Hall, Pierre Janet, Edmund Gurney, George Croom Robertson, Frederic W. H. Myers, Joseph Delboeuf, Théodule Ribot, Carl Stumpf, Charles Richet and Théodore Flournoy. In other words, this monograph is an international history of the “psychology of the subconscious” written from William James's point of view..

Intra-uterine experiences: manifestations and the treatment of identity problems in adolescents

Meyer, Elsie 25 August 2009 (has links)
The goal of this study is to point out the influence of earlier experiences, and in particular the experiences in utero, on the identity formation of the adolescent. Although the identity problem is generally associated with the development during the adolescent years, the researcher strives to point out the relation between identity problems as they manifests in later years, and the intra-uterine experiences. The research view this problem from three different angles: i. A study that examines the identity problem as it occurs during adolescence, as well as the causes of the problem. This study points out the main characteristics of the identity problem, as well as the way it manifests during the adolescent years. ii. A study of psycho-neurobiological models offers an explanation of the influence of memory on behaviour. This study gives the neurological explanation of how and why the very first experiences that are encoded in memory, have a distinct and prevailing influence on the behaviour of the individual. The encoding of memory takes action as soon as there is sufficient neurological development - this occurs at some stage in the development of the fetus in utero. The behaviour is not controlled by the past experiences, but by the perceptions and associations that are formed during encoding of memory. iii. A description of regressive therapies that enable the researcher to retrieve the memory from the subconscious mind, and reframe the perceptions and associations that were formed through earlier experiences, in order to change the behaviour. Two types of therapies are discussed - hypnosis and kinesiology. A qualitative study is performed on three respondents. This study points out the significance of the intra-uterine experiences on the development of the identity problem as it manifests in later years. It also indicates the fact that, although the past experiences can never be changed, the perceptions and associations that were formed during the encoding of the memory of the experience can be changed through reframing. The reframing of the experiences and the reformation of perceptions and associations have a definite and positive effect on the behaviour of the individual. / Educational Studies / D.Ed.

Van Zyl, Jacob Daniël 28 February 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine the meaning that psychotherapeutic patients associate with their self-esteem in order to contribute to a better understanding of what these patients' views of low and high self-esteem entail. A study of literature was conducted to expose different aspects of the term 'self-esteem' from several theoretical approaches. Furthermore, the substructure of the hypno-therapeutic approach (of which the medical hypno-analytical model was the main approach) was especially analysed to ground the psychotherapeutic treatment received by the research participants. Eleven research participants were involved in the study according to the extreme, as well as the confirming and disconfirming case methods of sampling. They were selected on the basis of homogenous characteristics, namely: white, Afrikaans-speaking men in the low to high average socio-economic sphere. This study was done within a qualitative or interpretive paradigm - the study therefore focuses on the understanding (verstehen) of the meaning individuals attach to their self-esteem and not on the explanation (erklärung) thereof. The data gathering techniques were the basic individual interview, the self-esteem induction and observation. The textual data, transcribed from audiocassettes, was analysed qualitatively with the help of the ATLAS.ti-program according to the principles and procedures of grounded theory (including open, axial and selective coding). Data analysis led to, amongst other things, the co-construction of 23 categories (with numerous subcategories) of which the central phenomenon was identified as 'low self-esteem'. Relations could be drawn between the core category and other categories and the following storyline, which could suggest a possible theory, was conceptualised: -Negative suggesting in the patient's past leads to low self-esteem, which is unhealthily handled within his emotional problematics by means of a negative thinking scheme for which therapy is received from a medical hypno-analytical perspective to treat the negative labels in order to facilitate attachment of positive meaning to his self-esteem. The meaning(s) ascribed by psychotherapeutic patients to their self-esteem seem to be, in accordance with the post-modern spirit of the age (Zeitgeist), holistic in nature.

Dick, Karien 31 July 2003 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The aim of the study is to describe the ecology of ideas in a family after the traumatic experience of a child. The focus is on developing a new context through which set meanings can expand. Therapeutic conversations and flexible hypnotic techniques, as part of a co-constructured process, are the "instruments" through which new ideas can be formed. The epistemological and theoretical framework of the study is postmodern, social constructionist ideas. Modernistic explanations are provided to fit in with the postmodern "both/and" focus of the study. A social constructionist position implies that the focus is placed on the multiple trauma perceptions of the family and social-cultural domain. Symptoms are viewed as part of the meaning systems in the family. The interconnection between dominant and non-dominant trauma stories is explained. Themes and relationship patterns are exposed and described according to the researcher's own epistemology, reflections and interpretations of the literature. / Clinical Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

A hypnotherapy (ego-states) model for survivors of sexual crimes : a psycho-educational perspective

Fourie, Anna Margaretha 28 February 2003 (has links)
Dissociation is commonly associated with sexual crimes or other forms of trauma where a person experienced a threat to the existence or survival of the self. During dissociation the ego may split in such a way that ego-states (subselves or segments of the greater personality) form to encapsulate feelings of guilt, pain, fear, and anger. If dissociation is severe, sufferers will have no conscious recollection of the sexual trauma as it is deeply repressed in the subconscious. This may result in symptoms/pathology later in life. Research indicated that hypnosis (due to its dissociative nature) is favourable as treatment modality for pathology/symptomatology associated with trauma and dissociation. This research study investigates the development of ego-states during experiences of sexual trauma and hypnosis (especially Medical Hypno-analysis and Ego-State Therapy) as effective treatment modality within the field of psycho-education. It proposes a hypnotherapy model where the diagnostic tools as indicated by the Medical Hypno-analysis model, are being used to determine the existence of repressed memories related to sexual trauma. The therapeutic processes as indicated by the Ego-State Therapy model, are being used to resolve and work through the core repressed traumatic experiences through the mobilization of associated and related ego-states. This study presents four case studies and discusses their clinical diagnostic procedures and therapeutic processes. The case studies illustrate that certain symptomatology/pathology experienced later in life may be the result of repressed memories and the formation of maladapted ego-states earlier in life when sexual trauma was experienced. Highly charged emotional and negative beliefs were set in the ego-states and could only be disarmed from their destructive content through regressions and hypnotherapy. A detailed discussion of the proposed hypnotherapy model and its application and concerns regarding its application within the field of psycho-education are also presented. The results of this study indicate that the proposed hypnotherapy model (the combination of Medical Hypno-analysis and Ego-State Therapy) can be used effectively and successfully when working with survivors and symptomatology/pathology associated with sexual crimes. / Educational Studies / D. Guide lines for educational psychologists in the therapeutical application of the medical hypnoanalysis with anxiety clients

Roets, Susanna 06 1900 (has links)
People's inability to cope with the demands of modern life, has led to a significant increase in the incidence of anxiety being experienced by people from all walks of life. People are suffering from anxiety without knowing the root cause of it and it was found from the anxiety cases studied that its origin can in many cases be traced to the birth experience where specific negative suggestions were imprinted on the subconscious. In this study the influence of the birth experience as the underlying cause of anxiety and the effect of it on the formation of the self-concept and self-actualisation have been explored. The research shows that a subconscious origin exists in the development of anxiety. In the research for this study, Medical Hypnoanalysis, which is based on a process of diagnosis and therapy, was used as therapeutic method with several clients suffering from anxiety symptoms. In this research the perceptions formed in the subconscious during the birth experience were examined and related to the anxiety experienced during childhood and later life. The case studies, their diagnoses and the follow-up therapeutic sessions relating to the birth experience were investigated and discussed. Educational Psychologists show a specific interest in and a tendency to get involved with, or implement Medical Hypnoanalysis in therapy. It became obvious from this study that Medical Hypnoanalysis supplements the needs of the Educational Psychologist as a tool in therapy. In this study guide lines have been presented to the Educational Psychologist for the treatment of anxiety originating from the birth trauma by regressing the client back to this traumatic experience. Suggestions on how to conduct the birth regression sessions have also been presented and clarified. Through the case studies the identification and removal of the highly charged emotional and negative beliefs that were responsible for the anxiety symptom have been demonstrated. The case studies have furthermore demonstrated the successful utilisation of positive and healing suggestions to achieve the therapeutic goals. The results of this study show that Medical Hypnoanalysis can be used effectively in the treatment of the root causes of anxiety. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Hipnose as terapeutiese hulpmiddel by Wiskunde-angs / Hypnosis as therapeutic aid with regard to Mathematics anxiety

Theron, Gesiena Catharina 11 1900 (has links)
Mathematics as the language of science and technology is one of few subjects used as entrance requirement to certain fields of study. Mathematics anxiety prohibits certain pupils to reach their full potential in Mathematics and thus to obtain their rightful place in the world of work. The aim of this study was to determine whether hypnotherapy can be used to lower Mathematics anxiety levels to such an extend that pupils can optimally achieve in Mathematics. The nature, causes, extent, recognition, explanation, consequences, incidence and measurement of Mathematics anxiety, its relationship to achievement in Mathematics, as well as the help that can be rendered by teachers and treatment programmes were studied. Hypnotherapy was then examined to determine whether its use was pedagogically justifiable. A hypnotherapy treatment programme was introduced which was found to be to some extent beneficial to all the subjects used. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Voorligting)

Hypnotic analgesia in obstetrics : an ecosystemic description

Markman, Andrea 02 1900 (has links)
In this study, hypnotic analgesia in obstetrics is explained in terms of ecosystemic thinking, as opposed to traditional conceptualisations of hypnosis. Five case studies were used. Each case is described in detail, as well as the therapeutic rationale behind each case, in order to present the reader with an understanding for the thinking behind the doing of ecosystemic hypnotherapy. The study utilises a new paradigm approach to research which is explained and is in keeping with ecosystemic epistemology. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)
