Value Assessment For Industrial Heritage In Zonguldak

Kilinc, Aysem 01 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to develop a value assessment method for industrial heritage in Zonguldak, one of the symbolic industrial cities in Turkey where mining has been the leading force since the discovery of hard coal in the mid-19th century. Values to decide what to conserve and why are searched during this process under the light of discussions on industrial heritage and values of the architectural conservation. Focusing on this aim, this study is structured in four parts as the survey on industrialization and industrial heritage, review and discussion of value types, research on Zonguldak, and implementation of value assessment process for the selected study area with the proposed value types. To conclude, value assessment process is a vital step in conservation of cultural heritage. For the industrial heritage, a relatively recent concept in the conservation discipline, existing value types need to be re-assessed. This thesis performs an exemplification of value assessment for industrial heritage over a selected study area in the Zonguldak coalfield and proposes possible decisions under the light of this valuation.

Managing Change: Integrating Cultural Landscape Values and Industrial Heritage Preservation / Integrating Cultural Landscape Values and Industrial Heritage Preservation

Cimino, Stephanie Laura 06 1900 (has links)
xv, 155 p. : ill. (some col.), maps. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis provides new ways to understand preservation theory and management objectives for industrial heritage sites by analyzing existing mechanisms for their preservation through values and practices associated with cultural landscape preservation. In addition to discussing the theory and development of existing preservation approaches to cultural landscapes and industrial heritage sites, the study identifies characteristics and values aimed at expanding the framework of historic industrial landscape preservation practice. Using case studies of western hard-rock mining landscapes as the primary examples, the study argues that management strategies based on traditional preservation practices are insufficient for interpreting the complexity of these historic places, and that historic industrial landscape preservation is best served by attending to the range of values and processes associated with the historic landscape and its protection. / Committee in Charge: Robert Z. The Capital Park Steam and Railway History Museum: Implementing a Holistic Methodology for Contextual Museum Architectural Design - The Rovos Rail Estate

Du Plessis, Tara January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the development of the site in and around Rovos Rail. Rovos Rail is a unique train travel company cut off from the public view. The project context is located in Capital Park adjacent to Transnet Avenue. The primary purpose of the site was to accommodate railway-related workshop facilities that provisioned and maintained the trains and carriages on their way to the industries of Johannesburg. Rovos Rail has done much in terms of the conservation of railway history in Pretoria. This ambition should be celebrated and built upon. It is necessary to promote the conservation of the rich railway history of South Africa and understand the impact thereof on the contemporary landscape. In order to understand the significance of contextualism, research based on philosophical, theoretical and practical lenses will be conducted. The argument relies on understanding the context through these different lenses. The historical significance of the site is celebrated. The dissertation places it within the historical continuum of both the larger context of Pretoria and the smaller context of the surrounding community. Through the design of a Steam Locomotive Museum next to Rovos Rail, a holistic approach, based on contextualism theories and South African case studies is illustrated. The project proposal establishes a physical connection with the historically significant structures of the site and emphasises the historical layers. Inspiration is drawn from the existing railway lines, the existing platform, ecological features and buildings. The chosen function, that of the museum, intends to act as the arbitrator for the diversity of narratives of an ever-evolving landscape, be it manmade or natural. The museum represents a prototype for the methodology proposed. The design aims to facilitate the conservation of railway history, the education of the importance thereof and enticement to develop these sites to represent a prosperous future. / Mini Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Architecture / MArch (Prof) / Unrestricted

\"Nós criamos uma raça\": o discurso identitário na narrativa expositiva do Museu Estadual do Carvão (Arroio dos Ratos/RS) / \"We created a race\": the identity discourse in the exhibition\'s narrative of the Museu Estadual do Carvão (Arroio dos Ratos/RS)

Oliveira, Clarissa Wetzel de 26 September 2018 (has links)
At the city of Arroio dos Ratos on the first half of the 20th century, the coal-mining community saw the rise and fall of the important mining industry of both for Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil. With the end of the extractive activity, the model village built by the companies was dismantled, leaving only ruins, memories and the feelings of loss and pride for all the hard work. The creation of the Museu do Carvão in the remnants of the older thermoelectric plant and coal pit was understood as an opportunity of reconstruction for this community, also acting as a support for a pulsating \"mining identity\". But it wasn\'t just an opportunity for it, also for the mining company and the goverment itself. In this context, these spaces are used as key device for the dissemination of certain messages, including representations of memory and identities. In light of this, the present study investigate museological narratives focused in two distinct moments of the Museu do Carvão: when the museum reopened in 1994 and 20 years later in 2014. We analyse these two ehxibitions discourse in order to identify, evaluate and understand the relationships among identity, cultural memory and museums.

Caieiras: núcleo fabril e preservação / Caieiras: industrial nucleus and preservation

Jeronymo, Vanice 21 September 2011 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the formation of core manufacturing improvements made by the Company in Caieiras (SP). Established themselves as research subjects the buildings erected during the growth period of the nucleus, the daily training of workers and population, the process of dismantling the core and initiatives aimed at preserving the remaining buildings. Analyzes the architecture of buildings and collective household such as housing for workers and managers, churches, clubs, cinema, stores, schools, railway station buildings and workrelated and industrial production. In this analysis we observed the predominance of the eclectic architecture of coated elements of classical language. The main objective of this dissertation is to examine the spatial formation of the core manufacturing and thinking about measures for the conservation of buildings remaining in the current context where the assets of the company rather is embedded in the process of fragmentation and real estate appreciation. Notes the need for further discussion on issues related to the practice and implementation of policies for heritage preservation in Caieiras, highlighting the weaknesses of the current municipal legislation which deals with the need to protect the cultural heritage of the city. The completion of this study was based on literature about the topic, the systematization of the material obtained through research in historical archives, in metric surveys, and the iconographic interviews with former residents and workers in the industrial core of Caieiras.
