This work aims to analyse Max Weber's perspective in relation to the socialism. This great classic of the social thought argued against the feasibility of the socialist project from a very critical point of view. More precisely, this work delineates and analyses the double biased Weberian criticism towards socialism: Weber not only opposes the idea that the human emancipation would be reached in an established socialist society, but also criticises the possibilities of success of a social revolution that could lead to that sort of society. Unveiled the arguments that underpin Weber's criticism, the subsequent critical discussion of the author's reasons is addressed in the light of the historical background in which the German thinker has come up with them. The chain of values that guided the author, which provides the basis for his political-ideological position, seems to exert great influence on the view he holds on socialism, which he has only seen as an extensive form of the bureaucratic domination, something that has already existed in its predecessor, the modern capitalism. Taking that very idea as pivotal, that negative view of socialism, Weber has considered there was no way out for the cage of iron of bureaucracy, thus claiming it was something inexorable in modern times, either in capitalism or in socialism, capitalism's supposed antipodal. Finally, even though some historical developments of the socialist experiences give reason to Weber's arguing, the Weberian theorisation and his arguing, whose strength and influence are undeniable, are questioned here based on some critical elements. In order to do so, a wide range of Weber's works are browsed and analysed; the famous Conference on Socialism, though, proffered by Weber in 1918, is here taken as the fundamental document for research

The concept of solidarity in anarchist thought

Nightingale, John R. January 2016 (has links)
This thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge by presenting an analysis of anarchist conceptions of solidarity. Whilst recent academic literature has conceptualised solidarity from a range of perspectives, anarchist interpretations have largely been marginalised or ignored. This neglect is unjustified, for thinkers of the anarchist tradition have often emphasised solidarity as a key principle, and have offered original and instructive accounts of this important but contested political concept. In a global era which has seen the role of the nation state significantly reduced, anarchism, which consists in a fundamental critique and rejection of hierarchical state-like institutions, can provide a rich source of theory on the meaning and significance of solidarity. The work consists in detailed analyses of the concepts of solidarity of four prominent anarchist thinkers: Michael Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin, Murray Bookchin and Noam Chomsky. The analytic investigation is led by Michael Freeden s methodology of ideological morphology , whereby ideologies are viewed as peculiar configurations of political concepts, which are themselves constituted by sub-conceptual idea-components. Working within this framework, the analysis seeks to ascertain the way in which each thinker attaches particular meanings to the concept of solidarity, and to locate solidarity within their wider ideological system. Subsequently, the thesis offers a representative profile of an anarchist concept of solidarity, which is characterised by notions of universal inclusion, collective responsibility and the social production of individuality.

A century of IsiXhosa written poetry and the ideological contest in South Africa

Mona, Godfrey Vulindlela January 2015 (has links)
The central argument of this inter-disciplinary study is that IsiXhosa written poetry of 1912 – 2012 is a terrain of the struggle between the contending dominant ideologies of Segregation, Apartheid and Charterism (post-Apartheid); and the subordinate/ subaltern ideologies of Africanism, Charterism (pre-democracy), Pan- Africanism, Black Consciousness Movement and other post Apartheid ideologies. The study highlights the mutual relationship between the text and the context by focussing on the ideological contest which manifests itself in both form and structure (i.e. aesthetic ideology) and the content (i.e. authorial ideology) of the poetry of different epochs between 1912 and 2012. The study is located within the framework of Antonio Gramsci’s theory of cultural construction. Gramsci postulates that ideology and culture play a significant role in the process of asserting hegemony. Important concepts that constitute Gramsci’s theory of praxis are: ideology, culture, hegemony, organic intellectuals and both ideological and repressive state apparatuses. The first chapter presents the problem, the objectives, the methodology, and the scope of the study. The second chapter presents Gramsci’s theory of cultural construction and the work of scholars who developed his theory further. The tool that is employed for analysis and interpretation of textual significations of IsiXhosa written poetry is the revolutionary aesthetics, which is proposed by Udenta. The third chapter analyses and interprets literature of the epoch of 1912-1934 and exposes the contest between Segregation and Africanism ideologies. The fourth chapter contextualises and analyses the literature of 1934 – 1948, the second phase of contestation between Segregation and Africanism. The fifth chapter deals with literature of the first and second halves of the Apartheid epoch (1948 - 1973). The Apartheid ideology contested with the Africanist ideology which transformed into the Charterism ideology in 1955. In 1960 Pan-Africanism ideology and in 1969 Black Consciousness Movement ideologies entered the contest. The sixth chapter examines literature of the period 1973 – 1994 which is the second phase of the Apartheid epoch that ends with the “glasnost” period of 1990 - 1994. The seventh chapter studies literature of the democracy period of 1994 – 2012. The eighth chapter is the summary and general conclusion. The illumination of the nexus between culture and ideology during the past century (1912 - 2012) will provide insights that will assist us in addressing the challenges we face during the democracy period, and in the development on Arts and Culture in general, and literature in particular

'Dobraia Staraia Angliia' in Russian perception : literary representations of Englishness in translated children's literature in Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia

Goodwin, Elena January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores Englishness and its representation in translated children’s literature in Russia during the Soviet period (from 1917 until 1991) and the post-Soviet period (from 1992 until 2015). It focuses on Russian translations of English children’s classics published between the late-Victorian period and the Second World War. It studies how Russian translations of English children’s literature construct literary portrayals of Englishness in varied socio-cultural and historical contexts. It investigates the complex processes involved in re-creating national specificities of English literary texts in Russian culture. The Anglo-centric essence of Englishness – or ‘dobraia staraia Angliia’ [good old England] – is expressed to a greater degree in the classics of English children’s literature. It is this particular idealised Englishness that is represented in the Russian translations. This thesis demonstrates that various manifestations of Englishness are modified in Russian translations and that the degree of modification varies according to changes in the political climate in Russia. A significant role is played by ideology – of a prevailing political nature during in the Soviet Union and a commercial ideology in post-Soviet Russia. The first chapter lays the theoretical foundation for the whole thesis and outlines the methodology adopted. Chapters 2 and 3 set out the contextual background for understanding Englishness by focusing on the question of Englishness perceived from English and Russian perspectives, and discussing the main tendencies of representing Englishness in both cultures. Chapter 4 presents the historical background by highlighting the political and cultural circumstances in which Russian translations were made. The second half of the thesis (chapters five, six and seven) focuses on the analysis of the representation of Englishness in Russian translations. Chapter 5 discusses which English children’s books, published between the late-Victorian period and the Second World War, were selected for translation and at what point between 1918 and 2015. Chapters 6 and 7 present the case studies in this thesis. These provide an analysis of how different manifestations of Englishness were translated and, taking into account the Soviet and post-Soviet historical contexts, examine why they were translated in certain ways.

Líderes e motivadores profissionais : novos trabalhadores a serviço do capital (dimensões ideológicas, disciplinares e cooptativas) /

Vieira, Rodrigo Moreira. January 2012 (has links)
From the mid-70s, the restructuring process initiated in several countries of the world reconfigured some elements related to the practical and subjective control of workers. Such elements were manifested in strategies such as participatory management, the Quality Control Circles (QCC) and all its counterparts in order to readjust the work force around the new production strategies. To break the resistance of workers in the implementation of such elements, new techniques were developed to co-opt workers, among which is the object of this work: the professional motivation. To operationalize it, both in intrafactory and extrafactory context, was established the leading figure of the motivator, who has occupied the role of ideology motivating articulator. The objective is to architect and implement mechanisms for pseudo psychological identification between workers and their respective duties, in order to motivate them to adopt a approaching stance in the production process in order to expand the exploitation of labor in name of the capital accumulation. However, indeed, by promoting a "motivation" fetishized by mere abstract categories distant from concrete reality, this kind of ideology only expanded - and has expanded - the distance between the worker and the element that effective him as generic being: the free and self-conscious work / Mestre

This present study aims to promote a discussion on the ideological aspects that involve the individual labor contract.
