MAC and Physical Layer Design for Ultra-Wideband Communications

Kumar, Nishant 25 May 2004 (has links)
Ultra-Wideband has recently gained great interest for high-speed short-range communications (e.g. home networking applications) as well as low-speed long-range communications (e.g. sensor network applications). Two flavors of UWB have recently emerged as strong contenders for the technology. One is based on Impulse Radio techniques extended to direct sequence spread spectrum. The other technique is based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. Both schemes are analyzed in this thesis and modifications are proposed to increase the performance of each system. For both schemes, the issue of simultaneously operating users has been investigated. Current MAC design for UWB has relied heavily on existing MAC architectures in order to maintain backward compatibility. It remains to be seen if the existing MACs adequately support the UWB PHY (Physical) layer for the applications envisioned for UWB. Thus, in this work we propose a new MAC scheme for an Impulse Radio based UWB PHY, which is based on a CDMA approach using a code-broker in a piconet architecture. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with the traditional CSMA scheme as well as the receiver-based code assignment scheme. A new scheme is proposed to increase the overall performance of the Multiband-OFDM system. Two schemes proposed to increase the performance of the system in the presence of simultaneously operating piconets (namely Half Pulse Repetition Frequency and Time spreading) are studied. The advantages/disadvantages of both of the schemes are discussed. / Master of Science

Detail Preserving Filters for Impulsive Noise Removal in Color Images

Jelavic, Simon 01 January 2006 (has links)
During the acquisition and transmission of images, it is important that the information is retained with the highest quality. Occasionally noise from various sources can corrupt an image. In this case, various image processing filtering techniques that are effective in removing noise can be used. Noise removal filters are designed to remove specific types of noise. However, they also degrade the image and detail is lost. This is particularly troublesome in cases where there is very little noise. A number of detail preserving filters have been proposed in the past, but most of the work was focused on monochrome images. With today's technological advancements, most of the images used are in full color, and detail preserving filters that have been designed for monochrome, cannot be directly applied for color. In this work, several detail preserving filters that have been designed to remove impulsive noise from color images are first surveyed and compared. We then consider the extension of detail preserving median filters to color images. At the end, we propose new filters that are capable of removing colored impulsive noise with minimum image degradation. Two user adjustable parameters can vary the strength of the filter for best results. Several comparisons with other previously proposed filters will be presented. Finally, in order to make the filter user friendly, an Adobe Photoshop plug-in is to be developed.

Positioning of UE in 6G Radio Networks Using CNN with Simulated Training Data

Engström, Gunnar January 2024 (has links)
Lately, models utilizing channel impulse response (CIR) data for training deep neural networks used for positioning in radio networks have shown promise, particularly in simulated indoor environments. Research has extended to real outdoor setups as well. In this study, deep neural networks originally designed for image classification were employed to estimate positions using both real and simulated outdoor CIR data. A ray tracing simulator was utilized to generate a simulated dataset which corresponded to a real-world dataset. Models were trained and tested on both datasets. To facilitate training on simulated data and testing on real data, a generative adversarial network (GAN) was employed. The thesis concludes that deep neural networks can effectively be used in real outdoor scenarios, but dense data sampling is likely necessary to achieve satisfactory performance across an area. Additionally, it was found that the simulated data used in this study differed significantly from reality, and the employed GAN could not effectively bridge this gap. Consequently, models trained on simulated data performed poorly when tested on real data. However, it was found that deep neural networks significantly outperformed the baseline K-nearest neighbor algorithm when trained and tested on simulated data. However, this was the only case where such a significant advantage for the deep models was observed.

Les mécanismes de l'expérience d'achat impulsif : analyse du rôle central du contenu de l'expérience vécue par le consommateur à l'intérieur du lieu de vente / The mechanisms of the impulsive buying experience : analysis of the central role of experience content lived by the consumer inside the place of sale

Abbes, Intissar 27 April 2012 (has links)
As part of an approach by the content of experience, this research aims to assess the level of the influence of the consumer‘s experience inside the place of sale in the realization of an impulse buy-inducing need to reexperience. The ultimate goal of this approach is to identify techniques that could be adopted by managers of retail outlets in view of balancing immediate profitability (ie frequency of impulse buying) and future profitability (ie intention to return to the same store). The thesis seeks to attempt to open the black box of the consumer experience inside the point of sale and offer a dynamic conceptualization of impulsive buying experience by combining different methodological ways, quantitative and qualitative ones. From an extensive investigation from consumers of clothing and accessories stores in the “Géant Casino” shopping mall in Tunis, we succeeded in proving that the content of the consumer’s experience inside the place of sale is a subsidiary construction of three dimensions: pleasure, sensory-awakening and immersion. This global construct explains the formation of a positive attitude towards the store products, the appearance of impulses of purchase, the mitigation of the anticipated regret of buying and the accentuation of the anticipated regret of not buying (internal mechanisms of negotiation) and therefore the realization of impulse buying. This construct also affects the need of reexperience that the consumer felt at the time of the experiment and also after 15 days. The latter could thus be seen as a powerful tool for monitoring the level of interactivity with the consumer experiential contexts set up by brand stores, a way to customer loyalty and an instrument of strategic action for strengthening their competitive commercial’s advantage.

Klein, Carmen 28 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Carmen Klein: Lung Sonography and Analysis of the Respiratory Mechanics by means of Impulse Oscilloresistometry in Healthy and Pneumonic Piglets and Porkers Institute of Bacteriology and Mycology Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Leipzig Germany Federal Institute for Health Protection of Consumers and Veterinary Medicine Jena Branch Germany submitted in May 1999 (157 pages, 52 figures, 34 tables, 285 references, appendix with 62 pages, 15 figures, 50 tables) Two non-invasive diagnostic methods, i.e. lung sonography and impulse oscillometry, were examined for the first time with regard to their applicability and evidence in clinically healthy as well as pneumonic weaned piglets and porkers of up to ca. 50 kg b.w. A total of 45 healthy or pneumonic swine was subjected to lung sonography. For this purpose, the animals were sedated with 2.0 mg/k b.w. diazepam. Six clinically healthy swine were studied to establish the lung area accessible to sonography in this animal species. Sonography was found to cover well the cranioventral sections of the lung often affected by pneumonias. The findings established by lung sonography in the swine showed a good coincidence with results described in literature for other species. The findings in swine revealed the following picture. ? No changes: sonography NAD ? Low-grade changes: little pronounced comet-tail artefacts ? Moderate changes: Comet-tail artefacts and consolidations or echogenic basic pattern including comet-tail artifacts ? High-degree changes: basic echogenic pattern or basic echogenic pattern plus abscess or necrosis Lung sonography findings in 34 swine were assigned to the corresponding pathological-anatomical findings. Tissue considered as unchanged from the pathological-anatomical angle was found to be without or with only minor sonographic changes, with a probability (sensitivity) of 95.65 %. In tissue exhibiting pathological-anatomical changes, sonographic findings showed pictures of moderate and high-degree changes, with a probability (sensitivity) of 74.62 % A total of 49 tissue samples was subjected to histological examination. It was not possible to infer, from the sonographic findings, the type of pneumonia diagnosed histologically in the swine. Nevertheless, a statistically confirmed correlation between the degree of pronouncedness of the histological changes and the sonographic findings was established. The pronouncedness of the histological changes was, like other factors, directly related to the air content of the lung tissue. Impulse oscillometry being a method used to analyze respiratory mechanics was applied to swine either sedated by means of diazepam (1.5 - 2.0 mg/kg b.w.) or non-sedated by medication but trained correspondingly. The animals were fixed in a canvas sling with openings for the limbs, avoiding stress, and the measuring system was adapted to the animal using a rigid face mask hermetically fitting to the animal's head. A total of 26 animals was included in the studies to examine a variety of factors influencing the IOS parameters. The following parameters were considered: Respiratory rate (Af), tidal volume (Vt), the spectral parameters resistance (R), reactance (X) and coherence (K) at 5, 10, 15 and 20 Hz each (R5, ...R20, X5, ...X20, K5, ...K20) as well as the model parameters, central (Rz) and peripheral (Rp) resistance, lung compliance (Cl) and central inertance (Lz). A variability analysis involving five non-sedated, clinically healthy swine served to examine the reproducibility of the results of three IOS measurements either performed consecutively within a few minutes, or on three consecutive days at the same time of the day. During the brief period of a few minutes, the variability of the results of measurements, for most parameters, was due to inter-individual factors while in the case of an analysis over several days, the intra-individual share of variability increased. In the context of the IOS measurements performed in eleven clinically healthy, sedated swine over a period of 62 days, development in terms of age and body weight could only partially explain the variations of the IOS parameters taking place with growth. The influence of the time of the day on IOS parameters studied in eight clinically healthy, sedated swine was found to be small; coincidence with data given in literature, however, was seen as a tendency. The influence of diazepam sedation on the IOS parameters was examined in 16 clinically healthy swine. This medication resulted in a significant reduction of Af and Vt and improved quality of IOS measurements (K5, K10, K20). In seven clinically healthy, non-sedated swine, defined respiratory situations, i.e. bronchospasm and bronchodilatation were generated by aerosol inhalation of pharmacologically active substances such as carbachol and fenoterolhydrobromide and demonstrated by IOS measurements. This state of the bronchial system is characterized by the changes in IOS parameters found at the time of the bronchospasmic reaction, in particular the vehement rise of resistance in the lower frequency range (R5), the obvious drop in reactance, especially at 5 Hz and the noteworthy rise in the model parameter, Rp. Nine clinically healthy, sedated swine were examined first with their heads in a physiological and then, in a vertical position of their heads. The severe bending in the head-neck area produced an extrathoracic obstruction. Spectral resistance (R5 - R20) and the model parameter, Rz were significantly higher at a vertical position of the head. An experimental infection of seven sedated swine with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae served as a model to study the course of respiratory disease. The animals were subjected to regular IOS measurements over a period of 23 days. The results of IOS measurements performed 3 days p.i. (elevated resistance over the entire frequency range, vehement rise of Rz and Lz) reflected, above all, an involvement of the extrathoracic and central areas of the respiratory tract. As a result, the modifications of defined IOS parameters (intensification of negative frequency dependency, rise in Rp, drop in Cl) which were present at least as a tendency, indicated an additional involvement of the peripheral lung areas. The results of IOS measurements over a defined period were compared with the findings from lung sonography. High correlations between IOS parameters indicating peripheral changes and lung changes detected by sonography were demonstrated. Conclusions 1.) Both diagnostic methods studied may be used in swine and will provide a valuable completion of conventional diagnosis in the respiratory tract of this species. 2.) With a high probability, lung sonography will provide evidence of the presence of visible pathological-anatomical changes in the lung and their extent in the lung area that is accessible to sonography. 3.) Impulse oscillometry provides a complex of parameters that contain information about the functional state of the entire respiratory system. This state is dependent upon numerous physiological factors (among them position of the head, growth, time of the day), pharmacologically active substances administered (e.g. diazepam, carbachol, fenoterolhydrobromide) and the presence of respiratory disease (e.g. caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae). 4.) Since the two methods reflect different facts, i.e. the morphological (sonography) and the functional (impulse oscillometry) state of the respiratory system, they supply mutually supplementing information. 5.) Both diagnostic methods offer themselves above all for use in scientific research on swine. Owing to their non-invasive character, it is possible to handle test animals in a non-offensive way. 6.) In specific cases, lung sonography may also be used in the veterinary practitioner's surgery, e.g. for the examination of animals kept for breeding.

Lecointre, Aubin 01 October 2010 (has links)
The research work presented in this thesis is situated in the framework of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The issue addressed is the design of a radio interface answering the specific needs of WSNs: simplicity, low cost, low power, small size, high data rate and reconfigurability. Current wireless technologies like WiFi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee are not able to respond to these requirements. Thus this study focuses on Impulse Radio Ultra-WideBand (IR-UWB) technology. At first, a joint study of the channel capacity and the hardware implementation is carried out to determine the optimal architecture of IR-UWB transceivers. This study proposes an architecture using multi-band IR-UWB (MB-UWB-IR) with a mixed implementation at 60 GHz with directional antennas. This solution is optimized according to the criteria of data rate and power consumption. To support the all the needs of WSN applications and to adapt to the evolution of the WSN’s environment, reconfigurability must be implemented in the proposed IR-UWB transceiver. This thesis presents a new solution: the reconfigurability by parameters. It supports the widest range of multi-property reconfigurability (with respect to data rate, bit error rate, radio range, power consumption, ...) of the state of the art. Finally, to validate these techniques by measurements, FPGA and ASIC implementations are realized by using the reconfigurability and the IR-UWB transceiver architecture proposed. A new method for joint synchronization and demodulation is proposed for a reconfigurable IR-UWB BPSK S-Rake receiver. The measurements show that the proposed technique improves the circuit performance: synchronization, demodulation, efficiency, network throughput, power consumption and complexity of the circuit. The proposed IR-UWB reconfigurable transceiver achieves a data rate and a wider range of reconfigurability compared to the state of the art

On ultra-wideband over fiber transmission systems employing semiconductor optical amplifiers / Etude de systèmes de transmission à bande ultra large sur fibre utilisant des amplificateurs optiques à semiconducteurs

Taki, Haidar 25 September 2017 (has links)
Ultra WideBand (UWB) over fiber is a promising technology for meeting the demands of future wireless local-area networks (WLANs) and wireless personal-area networks (WPANs). Thanks to the enormous bandwidth and fiber characteristics, a high communication quality may be established at long reach. UWB wireless propagation must be achieved with special power and spectral constraints fixed by the regulatory bodies (e.g. US Federal Communication Commission). The novelty of our work originates from exploiting the benefits of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) so as to get a reach extension at limited cost and complexity. However, the inherent nonlinear effects and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise associated to such device may affect the system performance.Overcoming these impairments has been of central importance in this study. SOA nonlinearities have been mitigated by applying analog pre-distortion in electrical domain. Phaser-based processing was also proposed to simultaneously reduce ASE influence and linearize SOA characteristics, thanks to up/down chirping performed on the transmitter/receiver sides. With Impulse Radio UWB transmission, due to the time properties of modulation patterns, discrete lines arise in the corresponding spectrum, which may violate FCC limit or reduce the power efficiency. A new shape randomization technique has been investigated, which proved to be effective in suppressing these spectral spikes. The three approaches have shown a great potential with On Off Keying and Pulse Position Modulation formats at long optical reach. The performance of Differential Chaos Shift Keying was finally examined in the over fiber system, a lower error probability was experimentally achieved in comparison with other non-coherent modulations.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The modeling of reverberant environments using techniques based on geometry, such as Ray Tracing or behavior-based wave, such as Finite Elements are devoted respectively to large and small places . But the great difficulty arises in the simulation of medium enclosures, based on precision to the geometrical approach and the computational cost for the behavior-based wave. Therefore, the objective of this work is to obtain Impulse Response Room (Room Impulse Response - RIR ) in midsize through technical Digital Waveguide Mesh ( Digital Waveguide Mesh - DWG ) environments . During the simulations the excitation was made by a half-sine, representing an approximation of the Dirac Delta. To simulate the reverberant field, were explored different geometries of meshes. Applying the results obtained it was possible to predict numerically the acoustic behavior of a sample of the same audio playing through the auralization. Added to this, certain parameters of acoustic quality which are directly derived from the RIR could be calculated . Finally, a comparative study of the RIR obtained experimentally , theoretically and via DWG was performed . From the initial proposal of the work , we have reached a computational tool able to predict the acoustic behavior in two and three dimensional environments , a relatively low computational time and quality in their results . Therefore , it was possible to make a preliminary analysis of the acoustic quality of the room , including allowing the sound reproduced in the virtual room.
