Removing barriers to learning, enabling international schools to respond to diverse needs : identifying the climate and conditions

Pletser, Jayne January 2016 (has links)
While there was a wealth of research and documentation on meeting student learning needs in mainstream national schools, the world of international schooling appeared to have remained relatively untouched by the march towards inclusion. The motivation for this inquiry was to examine efforts to develop inclusive educational provision in the elementary department of an international school. This small-scale study gave the researcher access to an international elementary school that was considered successful in responding flexibly to the needs of all learners. As there had been little research in the area of inclusion and international schooling the theory for this study was generated from the data and from a comparison with the findings of research on inclusion in national education systems. The research aimed to identify the climate and conditions present in the primary school at the time of the research by considering how it had removed barriers to learning for three students in different levels of learning support. A qualitative approach sought to use the data to understand the context and an ‘emergent’ design combining grounded theory and a case study approach was used. A central principle of constructivist grounded theory is that of giving voice to research participants and this study incorporated the voices, views and experiences of the students alongside their parents, educators and the specialists who worked with them. Data was collected from interviews and multidisciplinary child study meetings. Interviews were carried out with the senior leadership team, the students, their parents and educators. Classroom observations were carried out to supplement interview data for the student in intensive levels of support and further data was collected from school documentation written for parents. The findings indicated that the school climate was characterised by a strong focus on learning, access and solution seeking and the conditions found to support this climate were space and resources. Space was considered in terms of the use of space and the time required to facilitate both collaboration within the wider school community and collaborative teaching practices. Resources considered at the level of school organisation included personnel, therapies, policies and procedures, and the school curriculum. The overall findings from this study indicate that inclusion in this context was a process bound up in a proactive, dynamic, continuous cycle where a focus on solution seeking, learning and access drove the cycle. Based on the findings from this small-scale study it is recommended that international schools locate inclusion in the arena of whole school development where learning, access and solution seeking drives the school development cycle. It is recognised that the emerging theory could not be divorced from the interpretations of the researcher and additional research by a diverse range of researchers, in diverse international school contexts is needed. To better inform international school leaders it is hoped that these results will become part of a larger body of research that better reflects the range of international school contexts.

Lima, Juliana Ribeiro C?mara 07 August 2005 (has links)

Considering that learning is built from the weaving of socially constructed knowledge and the field of knowledge concerning subjectivity, this research explores the difficulties that occur with the later in the process of inclusion in the schools. Admittedly, the promise implicit in the school does not guarantee that the student learn, but the envisioning of this learning, when the student s educator discredits him, is such that the person is then not taken on as an actual student, being excluded from the transmission of knowledge, even within the school. The project implemented at the Instituto Educacional Casa Escola IECE, for the last three years, shows us that the possibility and sustainability of this envisioning is intimately linked to the subjectivity of the educator, as well as how one relates to the institutional culture. We question then, how this perspective is formed in the educator this perspective capable of denying the offer of a place as student, allowing him to advance while learning. With this in mind, we explore the paradoxical elements present in the paradigm of inclusion, as well as analyzing theoretically, through the body of conceptual psychoanalysis, the process of subjective constitution. We intend to bring to light how this process coincides with the construction of the educator s perspective of exemption from teaching the special needs students. We question, through the formative functions of subjective structuring (The Mirror Stage and the Oedipus Complex), how to form a perspective capable of promoting inclusion of special needs students in educators. Finally, we show how it is possible to bring to light, with the concepts of the I ideal and the ideal I, the subjective difficulties in the practicing instructor / A inclus?o escolar de alunos com necessidades educativas especiais (NEE) coloca-nos diante de uma pr?xis que reivindica discuss?es constantes a respeito de como efetivar esta proposta.

Echalar, Adda Daniela Lima Figueiredo 24 February 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-27T13:44:57Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 ADDA DANIELA LIMA FIGUEIREDO ECHALAR.pdf: 2121531 bytes, checksum: a433e82737cec01e51a8b027b86acac0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-02-24 / This research has as object of study teacher formation for digital inclusion via school environment in the context of the Program One Laptop per Child (PROUCA). This object is formed by the convergence of two thematic axs, the formation of teachers and the digital inclusion track school environment. Whereas access to technologies is not a sufficient condition for the reduction of social inequalities, the formation of teachers for the use of the so-called educational laptops arises as a fundamental aspect of PROUCA. This observation inspires the central question of this research: those formative process teachers are in schools covered by PROUCA in Goiás? On the basis of the principles of historical materialismdialectic, according to the proposed by Marx and Engels, the formative process of the teachers for the digital inclusion that occurred in the process of implantation of PROUCA in Goiás is taken as a special feature that is part of the whole that it reflects: relations material and ideological of a particular historical time. The general objective was to explain the formative processes teachers aiming to digital inclusion, track school environment, schools covered by PROUCA, in Tennessee. The research is exploratory and was performed by means of documentary analysis and field research involving the nine schools of the state of Goiás covered by the Program. It occurred between the years of 2011 and 2014, involving 55 teachers. For the treatment of the issue of digital inclusion track school environment, we highlight the contradiction to clarify the consequences of inclusion, as mere opposition to digital exclusion and social. As regards the formative processes teachers, the principle of alienation in was useful to clarify that the instrumental model adopted indicates much more adaptation of individuals to the demands of the neoliberal economy than a stand-alone formation, as it would be the foundation of action intentional teaching. The formative model was as basic assumptions the fragmentation and the hierarchy, based on an instrumental rationality. For analysis, the textual corpus emerging from exploratory research was organized in three major areas: the fragmentation that characterizes the context of training, the fragility of the concept of digital exclusion and alienation that mark the instrumental training that occurs in the bulge of PROUCA.
