Constructing and validating a measuring instrument for coping with occupational stress

SUMMARY CONSTRUCTING AND VALIDATING A MEASURING INSTRUMENT FOR COPING WITH OCCUPATIONAL STRESS by Melissa du Plessis Supervisor: Prof N. Martins Department: Industrial and Organisational Psychology Degree: Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology Orientation: Occupational stress is still a concern for both individuals and organisations, and academia is no exception. Employees’ ability to cope with occupational stressors depend on the regulatory strategies they adopt in response to the stressor. However, there is no clear consensus on how the coping construct should be measured. Existing literature further outlines various conceptual and methodological concerns regarding the measurement of coping. Van Wyk (2010) advocates that currently, no coping instrument has been developed and very few instruments have been validated in a South African and African context. Research purpose: The primary objective of this research was to construct a valid and reliable instrument for determining which coping strategies academics adopt in response to occupational stress. Research methodology: A combination of steps, suggested by scale development authors, was followed to develop the instrument. The process was broken down into three phases, namely: (1) theoretical investigation, (2) instrument purification, and (3) instrument optimisation. The construction of the questionnaire was based on a sample of 305 university employees who were permanently employed in a higher education institution in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Main findings: The study resulted in a psychometrically sound 33-item measuring instrument. Nine empirically validated coping strategies emerged, namely (1) social coping, (2) religious coping, (3) cognitive coping, (4) active leisure coping, (5) avoidant coping, (6) social disengagement, (7) vacation time, (8) rumination, and (9) emotional coping. These strategies were further classified as adaptive or maladaptive coping strategies. CFA confirmed the nine-factor model. Empirical support for construct and content validity, internal consistency reliability v and composite reliability was available. The instrument further demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity. Contribution/value-add: The key contribution of this study was the development of a psychometrically sound instrument for determining which coping strategies academics adopt in response to occupational stress. This study further contributed to constructing and empirically testing a model for coping with occupational stress. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to consolidate the preventive perspective as one of priority action, both by public authorities and private companies, in order to protect the health and safety of employees. To this end, the obligations incumbent on employers to provide a safe job for employees were studied. These obligations appear in Act 31/95 (November 8th) on Prevention of Risks at Work. A further aim is to assist legal agents in handling the labour regulations on health and safety at work, by the study of the safety regulations that have amplified the Act. Since these regulations originate in the legislation emanating from the International Labour Organization and the European Union, a detailed study was also made of the agreements taken at the ILO to protect the health and safety of employees, and of the directives issued within the European Community to promote improvements in work conditions / La finalidad de la tesis doctoral es consolidar la perspectiva preventiva como la de actuación prioritaria, tanto por los poderes públicos como por la parte empresarial, para la protección de la seguridad y salud de los trabajadores. Con este objeto, se realiza un estudio de las obligaciones que conciernen al empresario para proveer un puesto de trabajo seguro al trabajador, y que vienen reguladas en la Ley 31/1995, de 8 de noviembre, de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales. También se pretende facilitar al agente jurídico el manejo de la normativa laboral de seguridad y salud en el trabajo mediante el estudio de los reglamentos de seguridad que han desarrollado la Ley. A segurança e saúde no trabalho é tema de grande relevância nos dias atuais, sobretudo, em razão do elevado custo financeiro, social e para a saúde dos trabalhadores relacionados aos agravos decorrentes dos riscos existentes nas atividades laborais. Desde a Revolução Industrial e no Brasil desde o fim da escravidão o tema vem progressivamente adquirindo maior importância e chamando a atenção das autoridades públicas. No Brasil a segurança e saúde do trabalho é amplamente abordada e disciplinada na legislação trabalhista através das disposições da Consolidação das Leis Trabalhistas – CLT e das Normas Regulamentadoras, emitidas pelo Ministério do Trabalho, bem como de outros instrumentos legais afins. Entretanto, no âmbito do serviço público a realidade é bastante diferente. Apesar de o setor público abrigar diversas atividades que implicam em riscos à saúde e à integridade física de seus trabalhadores, a SST é marcada pela omissão legislativa nesse setor. Enquanto no regime CLT a disciplina legal e regulamentar do tema é bastante satisfatória em termos de abrangência, no serviço público, por sua vez a disciplina do tema resume-se a tratar dos adicionais ocupacionais, deixando de lado importantes programas e medidas que são utilizadas no regime celetista. O objetivo geral deste estudo é propor alternativas para sanar a omissão legislativa e regulamentar sobre saúde e segurança no trabalho no regime jurídico único federal (estatutário). O trabalho foi elaborado com base em pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. Discute-se a possibilidade de criação de alternativas para superar a omissão legislativa e regulamentar sobre SST que atinge os trabalhadores do setor público com vistas a garantir maior isonomia no tratamento dos trabalhadores de ambos os regimes, no que diz respeito à proteção de sua saúde e segurança no trabalho. / Safety and health at work is a subject which has great relevance nowadays, mainly due to the high financial, social and health costs of workers related to the grieves arising from the existing risks in the work activities. Since the Industrial Revolution, and in Brazil, since the end of slavery the issue has gradually become more important and has been drawing the attention of public authorities. In Brazil, occupational safety and health is widely approached and disciplined in labor legislation through the provisions of the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) and the Regulatory Norms issued by the Ministry of Labor, as well as other related legal instruments. However, within the public service the reality is quite different. Although the public sector has several activities that imply risks to the health and physical integrity of its workers, the SHW is marked by the legislative omission in this sector. While in the CLT regime the legal and regulatory discipline of the subject is quite satisfactory in terms of scope, in the public service, in its turn the discipline of the topic boils down to dealing with occupational additional which is paid to those who work in circumstances of risk, leaving aside important programs and initiatives that are used in the private sector. The general objective of this study is to propose alternatives to solve the legislative and regulatory omission on health and safety at work in the federal (statutory) single legal regime. The work was elaborated taking as a base bibliographical and documentary research. The possibility of creating alternatives to overcoming the legislative and regulatory omission of SHW affecting public sector workers is discussed, with a view in ensuring greater equality in the treatment of workers in both regimes with regard to the protection of their health and safety at work.

A crescente demanda da construção civil nacional nos últimos anos leva-nos a pensar em técnicas de construção mais avançadas, com utilização de pré-fabricação, com maior nível de industrialização, redução do volume de desperdícios e prazos de entrega, mas sem abrir mão da qualidade e durabilidade dos materiais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar e analisar os sistemas de gestão da qualidade, SSO e ambiental, de empresas de pré-fabricados. Para tanto, foi utilizado o método de pesquisa qualitativa e estudo de caso como técnica principal. Participaram deste trabalho oito empresas que estão localizadas na cidade de Curitiba e região metropolitana, Paraná. Para a coleta de dados, foi elaborado um questionário, observações diretas e entrevistas com alguns gestores. A partir das informações obtidas, desenvolveu-se um manual de processos e o mesmo foi aplicado como estudo de caso em uma das empresas que participou da pesquisa. O estudo mostrou que os processos e as atividades de gestão da maioria das empresas deste setor apresentam dificuldades e necessidade de melhorias. Com o estudo de caso foi possível aplicar o manual elaborado e pretende-se que os resultados obtidos sirvam de experiência para o desenvolvimento de técnicas semelhantes em empresas do mesmo ramo e setor. / The growing demand of national construction in recent years leads us to think in more advanced construction techniques, using prefabrication, with higher level of industrialization, reducing the volume of waste and delivery, but without sacrificing quality and durability of this materials. O study aims to identify and analyze the systems of quality management, safety and health at work, and environmental prefabricated companies. Thus, the qualitative research method and case study was used as the main technique. Participated in this study, eight companies are located in the city of Curitiba and metropolitan region, Paraná. To collect data, a questionnaire, direct observation and interviews with some managers was developed. From the information obtained, we developed a manual process and it has been implemented as a case study in one of the companies that participated in the survey. The study showed that the processes and activities of management of most companies in this sector have difficulties and need for improvement. With the case study it was possible to apply the manual prepared and it is intended that the results serve as experience for the development of similar techniques in companies in the same industry and sector.

Development of practical guidelines to promote occupational health and safety for workers in the construction industry in Windhoek, Namibia

Text in English / The study, which considers that the construction industry is a high risk one due to the physical work demand and nature of the working environment, was conducted to develop practical guidelines for workers and employers that promote occupational health and safety (OHS) in the construction industry in Namibia. The study, conducted at 13 study sites in Windhoek, Namibia, used a quantitative descriptive study method to gather data regarding the OHS status of the construction industry. Data was collected from the 13 study sites using a site interviewer-led questionnaire for 549 construction workers. In addition, both a site inspection checklist and document review checklist were used to collect the data from ten construction sites. A review of documents concerning occupational accidents, diseases and injuries encountered at construction sites that were held by the Ministry of Labour, Industrial relations and Employment creation for the five-year period from April 2011 to March 2016 was carried out. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 23. The study findings show that most of the workers at the study sites were young and male, with most participants lacking awareness of OHS issues, which may hinder accidents and injuries prevention. It also emerged that occupational hazards are prevalent at the study sites and yet there were poor mechanisms for hazard prevention or mitigation measures. The study notes that there was a high rate of occupational accidents and injuries, as well as a few incidences of health hazards, as indicated by few participants, although there was no documented occupational disease. It is also noted that most study sites do not comply with OHS legislations, such as having OHS policies that indicate the employer’s commitment towards OHS, which placed workers at risk of hazard exposure, occupational accidents, injuries and diseases. Developing and evaluating a coaching program to improve safety leadership

Legislators are placing increased pressure on mining companies to improve their safety performance. The importance of safety leadership is highlighted by its role in safety culture and improving safety performance. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the impact of a coaching program on safety leadership. The main constructs namely safety culture, safety leadership and coaching was conceptualised along the humanistic paradigm, with theoretical definitions and models. In this study, safety culture is employees’ shared attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values about safety that affect their behaviour in the workplace. Safety leadership is the interpersonal influence that a leader exercises to achieve the organisation’s safety performance goals. Coaching is an interpersonal interaction that aims to improve individual performance through increased selfawareness and action plans. A theoretical model was developed to explain the elements that constitute effective safety leadership. A coaching program was developed based on executive coaching and leadership development principles. The empirical investigation was conducted in an organisation in the South African mining industry. A nested mixed methods design was followed. In the quantitative study, a 360 degree survey was employed to assess the ratings of a purposive sample (n=54) along eight dimensions before and after the coaching. Data was analysed with descriptive and inferential analysis. Results showed statistically significant improvements on accountability, collaboration, and feedback and recognition after the coaching. The results reflected differences in 360 degree ratings according to gender, race, job level, age and geographical location. The most significant improvements were for females, Africans, management, age 51-60 years, and site 2. In the qualitative study, a semi-structured interview was employed to study four cases to investigate managers’ personal experiences and changes in attitude toward safety. Data was analysed utilising thematic analysis. The findings revealed that coaching was a positive experience and contributed to changing managers’ attitudes toward safety. The research added to the field of organisational behaviour by presenting a theoretical model that enhances the understanding of safety leadership, the development of a coaching program and providing empirical evidence that the principles of coaching and leadership development can be applied to improve safety leadership. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D. O trauma corporal por acidentes de trabalho e suas implicações psíquicas

O estudo do acidente de trabalho é um tema relativamente recente, nasce no início do século XX, posteriormente à revolução industrial, tomando força com o nascimento da medicina do trabalho. Desde então, vem despertando o interesse por parte dos pesquisadores das ciências da saúde, ciências humanas e ciências sociais, pois é possível estudá-lo sob diferentes enfoques. Esta pesquisa se propõe estudar as implicações psíquicas do trauma corporal nos vitimados por acidentes de trabalhos. Especificamente, pretende abordar o conceito de trauma psíquico de modo a servir de subsídio para repensar a clínica com acidentados e analisar quais as razões que levam alguns indivíduos a permanecerem vinculados ao trauma decorrente do acidente do trabalho, fazendo dele um elemento central nas suas vidas. Trata-se de um projeto inserido num estudo mais amplo que discute as questões das psicopatologias do corpo no contexto social atual. O trabalho teve como referencial teórico estudos acerca do acidente de trabalho, a teoria freudiana do trauma, as contribuições de Paul - Laurent Assoun, sobre o corpo na psicanálise e autores psicanalíticos contemporâneos. A pesquisa de campo foi realizada junto a pessoas adultas que sofreram acidentes de trabalho, independente da faixa etária e sexo e, para tanto, escolhemos, uma instituição governamental, Instituto Nacional de Seguro Social (INSS). como campo de nossa pesquisa, por ser ela a instituição pública encarregada de prestar assistência ao trabalhador quando ele perde a capacidade de trabalho, seja por doença, por invalidez, por idade avançada, por desemprego, ou ainda por assistir às famílias dos trabalhadores em caso de morte. Coletamos depoimentos de sujeitos que sofreram acidentes de trabalho, tais depoimentos foram interpretados à luz dos conceitos psicanalíticos que sustentam a prática clínica. Esperamos que os resultados ampliem a discussão e o conhecimento sobre as repercussões psíquicas em pessoas traumatizadas por acidente de trabalho, mostrando os desdobramentos desses traumas no corpo e suas relações psicossociais

Impact des modifications des conditions de travail dans l'amélioration de la santé-sécurité au travail des mineurs artisanaux du Katanga en République Démocratique du Congo

L’exploitation minière artisanale est une activité qui intervient dans un contexte de précarité et suscité plus interrogations sur le respect des règles de l’art minier, la protection de l’environnement ainsi que la préservation de la santé, de la sécurité et du bien-être au travail des personnes impliquées. Dans le cas particulier de la Province du Katanga, en République Démocratique du Congo, elle a connu un essor particulier suite à l’effondrement de la GECAMINES, société d'État qui exploite le cuivre et le cobalt et était le principal pourvoyeur des emplois directs et indirects dans cette partie du pays. Cet essor s’est également trouvé conforté par l’envolée des prix des produits miniers et a accentué l’ampleur des problèmes posés par l’artisanat minier.<p>Alors que la plus grande attention est tournée vers la gestion des problèmes environnementaux, nous avons voulu évaluer l’impact des conditions de travail dans ce secteur d’activité sur la santé et la sécurité des exploitants artisanaux. En matérialisant cet impact, notre ambition est d’identifier les facteurs-clé sur lesquels construire une politique de promotion, d’éducation et d’amélioration de la santé au travail dans ce milieu.<p><p>Matériel et méthodes<p>Notre étude repose sur deux enquêtes réalisées en vue de circonscrire les éléments caractéristiques de la situation de travail dans l’exploitation minière artisanale. Ces enquêtes se sont déroulées dans les mines artisanales de la Ruashi et de Lupoto. Elles nous ont permis également de procéder à une observation de cette activité, telle qu’elle se pratique sur le terrain et la première enquête a été couplée à une analyse d’exposition et d’imprégnation des mineurs artisanaux aux contaminants contenus dans la gangue minéralisée.<p>L’exploitation des résultats de ces enquêtes a donné lieu à plusieurs études descriptives à visée étiologiques dans lesquelles nous avons présenté, en plus des statistiques usuelles, les Odds Ratio et les tests d’association calculés grâce au logiciel SPSS version 17. Nous avons également procédé à des revues de la littérature, principalement pour circonscrire les pathologies liées aux risques toxicologiques spécifiques à cette activité ainsi que pour identifier les facteurs-clé de succès des expériences de réforme de la mine artisanale.<p><p>Résultats<p>Les résultats obtenus ont fait l’objet des publications compilées dans la présente thèse. Since then, it has aroused the interest of researchers in the health sciences, humanities and social sciences, it is possible to study it under different approaches. This research proposes to study the psychological implications of body trauma in victims of accidents at work. Specifically, it seeks to address the concept of psychic trauma in order to provide support for rethinking the clinic with accidents and analyze the reasons that lead some individuals to remain bound to the trauma caused by accidents at work, making it a central element in their lives. This is a project housed in a larger study that discusses the issues of the pathologies of the body in current social context. The work has a theoretical studies about the accident at work, Freud's theory of trauma,the contributions of Paul - Laurent Assoun on the body in psychoanalysis and contemporary psychoanalytic authors. Field research was conducted among adults who have suffered accidents at work, regardless of age and sex and, therefore, we chose a government institution,the National Insurance Institute (INSS). as a field of our research, it being a public institution responsible to assist the employee when he loses the ability to work, whether due to sickness,invalidity, old age, unemployment, or by assisting the families of workers if death. Desde então, vem despertando o interesse por parte dos pesquisadores das ciências da saúde, ciências humanas e ciências sociais, pois é possível estudá-lo sob diferentes enfoques. Esta pesquisa se propõe estudar as implicações psíquicas do trauma corporal nos vitimados por acidentes de trabalhos. Especificamente, pretende abordar o conceito de trauma psíquico de modo a servir de subsídio para repensar a clínica com acidentados e analisar quais as razões que levam alguns indivíduos a permanecerem vinculados ao trauma decorrente do acidente do trabalho, fazendo dele um elemento central nas suas vidas.
