Cinerati

Brown, Anna Marie 06 June 2012 (has links)
From the polluted canals of turn-of-the-century Birmingham, England, William Moxley is an ineffectual captain of industry burning for a Music Hall life. With his unlikely bride Elvina in tow, he journeys to the west coast of the United States, only to shipwreck against his lifelong dream--a vaudeville hall called "The Sunshine." In "Dear Clara," a depression-era love story, Warren Wilkerson has been a Sunshine fixture since the age of six; suddenly forced out by the theatre's back-stabbing, bootlegging "owner," Warren must resort to desperate measures in order to pay for his dying wife's insulin. Freewheeling philosopher Holly Jo is a Seattleite sausage cart owner with a bun in the oven. Having recently lost her parents, she forges a new family from the fringes of 1974 arthouse--it's "The Labor of Holly Jo Daffodil." In "Chapter Eleven," foul-mouthed Red--the Helios's manager--learns that his boss is selling out to evil Emerald Cinemas; the news triggers a long-overdue heart attack, which turns out to be the least of his worries. Beginning with the birth of the feature length and ending at the onset of the digital age, Cinerati is a comic salute to the celluloid era--a grand era spanning over a century. Featuring an eccentric ensemble where a bit player in one decade can take a lead role in the next, Cinerati celebrates the venues in which cinema was meant to be seen, and the strange families that pop up wherever the projectors flicker.

O lugar do patrimônio industrial / The place of industrial heritage

Dezen-Kempter, Eloisa, 1963- 17 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Cristina Meneguello / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-17T16:05:07Z (GMT). América Fabril (1878) e a Fábrica Bangu (1893). The effects of the deindustrialization and economic restructuring, intensified uring the 1990's, reaching large manufacturing complexes established in he XIX and XX centuries, which were the economic drivers and the main ttractors of urban development in that location. These industrial sites imprinted, in an unique manner, spatial character and identity, organizing the urban dynamics and the social relations. Its deactivation changes the territory, beforehand occupied with industrial activities, into obsolete and vulnerable to restructuring and incorporation process as a result of new urban activities that demand new spatial presence, putting in danger its existence. Considering then, that the urban environment is transforming rapidly and fundamentally, this thesis intends to, by analysis and comparison of the history of five textile factories in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, contribute in unveiling the potential and singularity of the industrial "place" in producing contemporary urban areas. The industrial buildings analyzed were selected due to their technical and architectural importance as well as the element that directed the urban development in that area. In the Sao Paulo state were analyzed the Sao Luis Factory (1869) in Itu, the Enrico Dell'Acqua and Co (1892), in Sao Roque, the Brasital (1875) in Salto, and in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Cia America Fabril (1878) and the Bangu Factory (1893). In order to do that, it was analyzed the industrial development in the two states, focusing in the role the industrial complexes and its edificial structures in configuring an architectural type and comparing the industrial area preservation strategies part of the cultural landscape, in a process of praising its form, use and scale diversity, as well as a witness and reference of historical, technological and social importance. Based on the analysis of the industrial edifications, focused in recreating the historical context through a myriad of information sources - corporate documents, architectural blueprints, publications, cartography, field visits and review of the process of selection criteria to list a building- it was possible to established a broad perspective of its complexity. In parallel, it was analyzed the emerging need to value the industrial patrimony in the Brazilian preservationist practice by identifying the listed buildings by IPHAN and by comparing the parameters of selection that purposed the preservation of two factories, aiming at identifying the specific procedures for industrial areas of cultural interest. It was verified that, with the disuse and abandonment, these industrial sites, as material support of cultural and social expressions, were adjusted to the new urban demands, in which the rehabilitation process plays an important role in a pratical preservationist, promoting its monumental value and acknowledgment / Doutorado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Doutor em História

Reformas na indústria elétrica brasileira: A disputa pelas \'fontes\' e o controle dos excedentes / REFORMS IN THE BRAZILIAN ELECTRIC INDUSTRY: THE DISPUTE FOR `SOURCES\' AND THE CONTROL OF THE EXCEEDING LABOUR

Dorival Gonçalves Junior 28 September 2007 (has links)
The industry of infrastructure that Brazil produces, transports and distributes electricity, as integrant part of the chain of the electric industry, has been submitted, historically, to a movement of permanent change in its organizational structure of production. These usually have happened in the interior of quarrels carried through in the enterprise ways, politicians - also with the participation of bureaucracies of states - and academics. In a general way, the working class always was absent and nor was invited to participate of the quarrels of as to organize the electricity industry. Apparently, the winning ideas at each time, finish determining the organizational structure for that historical period. Synthetically is common to characterize the evolution of this industry in three great historical movements. First, in the principle of industry, when it is organized from private investors. Second, the period of great expansion, when the electricity industry is developed by the State. Third, the current movement of change, comes being reorganized in the direction to return it in the totality to the private control. In general, these movements of changes of the electricity industry have been explained, as resulted of ideal external trends, revealed for new organizational conceptions that aim the improvement of the electricity industry, while a good for all the society. Inside of this scene, this study - \"REFORMS IN THE BRAZILIAN ELECTRIC INDUSTRY: THE DISPUTE FOR `SOURCES\' AND THE CONTROL OF THE EXCEEDING LABOUR\" - the pretension has to understand the past and the present of the changes in the industry of according to perspective Brazilian electricity of the Economy Politics in Marx. On aspects to the nature, the techniques and the technologies related to the electricity industry are boarded while manifestations of the social form of the capitalist production. The analysis of the relations and the contradictions appeared in the production/circulation - in general, manifest in crises that if propagate almost for the totality of the production - and in the movement of changes of the electric industry allows to identify to which the main operating economic forces and its respective strategies in the fight scenes of control for the exceeding labour

Estampas na tecelagem brasileira: da origem à originalidade / Printed textile design in Brazilian textiles: from origins to originality.

Luz Garcia Neira 13 August 2012 (has links)
The Brazilian textile industry reached its apogee in the period 1950-1970. The widespread impact it made in a climate of euphoric nationalism, led to this sector being turned into a means of strengthening feelings about the existence of a particular Brazilian national identity, which it achieved by producing printed designs that were genuinelyBrazilian. On the basis of this supposition, this research project is devoted to exploring the way nationalistic and patriotic feelings have been instilled and spread through images, by employing a methodology that mainly involves investigating the inner processes of industrialisation and the observation of the promotion of the textile industry in that period. The study seeks to support the view that the feelings that have been evoked, arise more from an effective discourse than any authentic or genuine creation that has taken place in this sector.

Evolução histórica da concentração da indústria de refino de açúcar na região Centro-Sul do Brasil e análise da sua estrutura de equilíbrio / Historical evolution of refined sugar industry concentration in Center-South of Brazil and analysis of equilibrium structure of this industry

Rodrigues, Laura Poggi 12 December 2005 (has links)
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the refined sugar industryin Brazil and to identify its market behavior in the central region in Southern Brazil Accordingly, this study analyzed the influence of distinct levels of competition concerning price and entrance barriers on the market structure. Some exogenous factors, such as public regulation, sectorial organization, and strategies to set up costs, were also verified to determine the market sector’s concentration. the theoretical model of two-stage game for industries intensive in exogenous sunk cost described by Sutton (1991) was used to determine the value of the set up costs for a single plant of minimum efficient scale (m.e.s). Data of the present study were compared to those reported by Sutton (1991), whose study focused on Europe, Japan, United States and Taiwan. The present work, however, focused on the central region in Southern Brazil. The ratio of the market concentration of the sugar-refining industry, as well as the ratio of its market size and exogenous sunk cost was calculated. The value of σ/S found for 2001 was 0.8407%, consistent with the values found for the countries analyzed by Sutton; furthermore, this result evidences the high index of set up costs and existence of barriers of entrance, suggesting that that the industry of refining sugar in Brazil was initiated with small and average commercial groups, with a regionally-concentrated sector. During the regulated period the industry was highly concentrated (by the 1980s the CR4 was about 80%). In the 1990s, there was a great entrance of new brands and consequently a decline in the leader brand (União). One of the reasons that such industry is highly concentrated is the huge sunk cost. Like the refined sugar industry analyzed in other countries, the Brazilian refined sugar industry presented, in 2003, high exogenous sunk cost in relation to the size market.

Book Publishing In Turkey: Problems And Prospects In The Context Of Industrialization

Boyraz, Cemil 01 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the Turkish book publishing industry within the framework of historical development of book publishing since Ottoman practice onwards and current structure of the Turkish book market. The aim of the thesis is to understand recent trends, developments, and problems in the Turkish book market, within its specific historical conditions and in a comparative method to the current structure of book publishing industry in developed countries where book publishing is a global business and highly integrated to other sectors of cultural commodity production. The hypothesis is that although there have been profound changes in the Turkish book publishing sector on the way towards industrialization during recent decade, especially after 2000s / book publishing in Turkey remained an &quot / infant industry&quot / and Turkish book publishing market is still unsaturated as a result of serious problems continuing in different cycles of circulating capital in the Turkish book market and in preconditions of profit-maximization and capital accumulation processes / impediments on the creation of a large mass of readers and new genres / lack of an industrial organization of book production and business, and belated developments in regulative-legal framework in copyright regime.
