The instruments and the processes of knowledge representation reflect the political and cultural standpoint of its creators and, therefore, they are not neutral. That way, and considering that ethics establishes itself as a way to distance power over others, preventing itself from being the object of any ideology, one can observe that, the issue of representation is linked to an ethical dimension, because it shall concern its utility and reliability for determined groups of users. In this direction, it is considered, by means of exploratory research of theoretical-investigative character, to establish, based on the studies of Antonio García Gutiérrez, Michèle Hudon and Clare Beghtol, the identification of convergent theoretical chains that subsidize the issues on ethical aspects in the activities of knowledge representation. From confrontation and critical analysis of the ideas of the authors listed above, one can observe that the same ones have convergent takes on the user and its beliefs, and complementary takes concerning the professional ability, thus concluding that the values of transcultural ethics of mediation, multilingualism and cultural warrant are inherent to the activities of knowledge representation and determinant to professional performance in the field.

Pinho, Fábio Assis [UNESP] 28 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)

The studies on ethics in Knowledge Organization and Representation, especially in the Subject Approach to Information, have collaborated to establish the theoretical and methodological aspects of Information Science which are justified by the assumption of social inclusion, as a metavalue, it situated itself between social prejudice and proselytize, creating a situation where three axiological universes coexist: the document or information, the user and the librarian. Therefore, the indexing is linked to an ethical dimension because it must concern itself with its reliability and usefulness in certain discourse communities or specific domains. In this direction, it is proposed through an exploratory and documental research with qualitative and inductive characteristics to identify the maximum specific terminological that Brazilian indexing languages allow for terms relating to male homosexuality, analyzing like investigative corpus the terms assigned to papers published in the Journal of Homosexuality, Sexualities and Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health, between the years 2005 to 2009. From confrontation and analysis of terms and the Brazilian indexing languages there is an approximation of meaning in the Brazilian context, imprecision in the terminology, with indications of prejudices disseminate by ‘politically correct’, the biased representation of the thematic and the presence of figures of speech

Determination of system and processes employed by the property industry to manage information ethics in Gauteng South Africa

Moropane, Itumeleng Vanessa 10 1900 (has links)
The South African property sector is characterised by property practitioner firms that fail to comply with the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB) code of conduct and firms having inefficient systems which are unable to combat hacking and cybercrime in the sector. Although property practitioner firms have systems and processes in place, there are still instances of unethical behaviour. Failure to prevent client personal information from being leaked is still a major problem in the sector, this issue can be addressed by demonstrating due diligence with respect to safeguarding sensitive information. The accuracy of information is also a problem in the sector and requires firms to resort to analysing collected data before capturing it, in order to maintain accuracy. The sector encounter illegal access to systems including breaking the password protected websites and password protection on a computer system. The objectives for this study were to investigate the extent to which firms enforce Information Ethics (IE), explore the systems and processes put in place by firms to enforce IE and to explore the challenges experienced by the firms in the Gauteng province when enforcing IE. The study was qualitative in nature and indepth interviews were conducted to gather information from five managers and five employees within the firm situated in Gauteng province. The study found that these property practitioner firms enforce IE to a certain extent. These firms use (22) systems and processes to enforce IE and experienced (5) challenges during the enforcement of IE. The study concludes that these property practitioner firms enforce IE using different systems and processes and experience challenges during enforcement. The list of IE enforcement systems and processes and challenges identified in this study will assist policy makers in compiling IE policies. The findings will also assist firms in IE enforcement and reduction of IE enforcement challenges. / Business Management / M. Com. (Business Management)

e-Research and the Ubiquitious Open Grid Digital Libraries of the Future

Patkar, Vivek, Chandra, Smita January 2006 (has links)
Libraries have traditionally facilitated each of the following elements of research: production of new knowledge, its preservation and its organization to make it accessible for use over the generations. In modern times, the library is constantly required to meet the challenges of information explosion. Assimilating resources and restructuring practices to process the large data volumes both in the print and digital form held across the globe, therefore, becomes very important. A recourse by the libraries to application of successive forms of what can be called as Digital Library Technologies (DLT) has been the imperative. The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) is one recent development that is expected to assist the libraries to partner in setting up virtual learning environment and integrating research on a near universal scale. Future extension of this concept is envisaged to be that of Grid Computing. The technologies driving the â Gridâ would let people share computing power, databases, and other on-line tools securely across institutional and geographic boundaries without sacrificing the local autonomy. Ushering an era of the ubiquitous library helping the e-research is thus on the card. This paper reviews the emerging technological changes and charts the future role for the libraries with special reference to India.
