Organização da informação em sistemas eletrônicos abertos de Informação Científica & Tecnológica: Análise da Plataforma Lattes / Scientific and technological information organization in open systems: Lattes database analysis

Silva, Fábio Mascarenhas e 15 January 2008 (has links)
Discussion, assessment and presentation of parameters for organization of Brazilian Scientific and Technological Information (STI) on electronic means, focusing on the problems of access to information in open systems, specifically the Lattes Data Base of the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa (CNPq). For the theoretical and conceptual well-grounding of this research, a retrospect of Brazilian STI was carried out from the evolution of its national Science and Technology politics, and then the resources related to the organization of information were critically analyzed. An explanatory study is presented, developed from CVs taken from the Lattes Data Base in order to identify if the open nature of the system puts the consistency of data at risk when information is retrieved. This analysis was carried out in two steps: the first one was done based on the logic of Personal Files, and the second one by observing the ways the system is fulfilled within three categories: fields with Total Autonomy, with Partial Autonomy and with No Autonomy. We conclude that consistency is at a risk when information is retrieved in open systems. From systemization of results we present suggestions to improve on the system.

Tratamento da informação nas artes digitais: uma abordagem contemporânea da documentação em meios tecnológicos / Digital arts information processing: contemporary approaches at new media documentation.

Orth, Gabriela Previdello Ferreira 23 September 2013 (has links)
The subject matter of this research addresses information treatment in digital ambience. It involves data processing, collection organization and art works conservation, considering the existing technological media. Its Theoretical base grounds in Documentation, theories of Information Science, as well as knowledge organization and technology. On the other hand, this approach is related to both Digital Art and Culture, considering all art works singularities that due to the fact of being made in a collective way are often ephemeral. The paradoxical features found in digital art treatment are considered the harder issue, once one has to record it in order to its reuse and/or updating possibilities. The methodology used is qualitative and exploratory, working on information treatment theories and organization institutionally accepted examples. Debate about information condition and technology statute is considered the starting point in our analysis to qualify digital art in informational ambience. Document and documentation in art and technology sphere is explored. Nontraditional documentary practices possibilities are being considered in digital art information systems and collection treatment. Digital art sites made by consortiums and other organization cases analysis allows to describe several informational resources utilized, including interoperability and preservation troubleshooting adopted. We conclude that Digital art information ambience is structured in complex manners. Various audiovisual media and computational technologies are used to work with miscellaneous content and different types of documents.

Exploration of RDA-Based MARC21 Subject Metadata in Worldcat Database and Its Readiness to Support Linked Data Functionality

Zavalin, Vyacheslav I. 08 1900 (has links)
Subject of information entity is one of the fundamental concepts in the field of information science. Subject of any document represents its intellectual potential -- 'aboutness' of the document. Traditionally, subject (along with title and author) is the one of three major ways to access information, so subject metadata plays a central role in this process and the role is constantly growing. Previous research concluded that the larger bibliographic database is, the richer subject vocabularies and classification schemes are needed to support information discovery. Further, a high proportion of information objects are unretrievable without subject headings in metadata records. This exploratory study provides the analysis of the subject metadata in MARC 21 bibliographic records created in 2020; and develops understanding of the level and patterns of 'aboutness' representation in the MARC 21 bibliographic records. Study also examines how these records apply the recent RDA and MARC21 guidelines and features intended to support functionality in a Linked Data environment. Methods of Social Network Analysis were applied along with content analysis, to answer research questions of this study. Suggestions for future research, implications for education, and practical recommendations for library metadata creation and management are discussed.

Ménard, Elaine 27 November 2008 (has links)
During the last few years, the Internet has become an indispensable medium for the dissemination of multilingual resources. However, language differences are often a major obstacle to the exchange of scientific, cultural, educational and commercial documents. Besides this linguistic diversity, many databases and collections now contain documents in various formats that can also adversely affect their retrieval process. In general, images are considered to be language-independent resources. Nevertheless, the image indexing process using either a controlled or uncontrolled vocabulary gives the image a linguistic status similar to any other textual document and thus leads to the same difficulties in their retrieval. The goal of our research is to first identify the differences between the indexing approaches using a controlled and an uncontrolled vocabulary for ordinary images of everyday-life objects and to then differentiate between the results obtained at the time of image retrieval. This study supposes that the two indexing approaches show not only common characteristics, but also differences that can influence image retrieval. Thus, this research makes it possible to indicate if one of these indexing approaches surpasses the other in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction of the image searcher in a multilingual retrieval context. For this study, two specific objectives are defined: to identify the characteristics of each approach used for ordinary image indexing of everyday-life objects that can effect image retrieval in a multilingual context; and to explore the differences between the two indexing approaches in terms of their effectiveness, their efficiency, and the satisfaction of the image searcher when trying to retrieve ordinary images of everyday-life objects indexed according to either approach in a multilingual retrieval context. Three methods of data collection are used: an analysis of the image indexing terms, a simulation of the retrieval of a set of images indexed according to each of the two indexing approaches conducted with sixty respondents, and a questionnaire submitted to the participants during and after the retrieval simulation. Four measures are defined in this research: the effectiveness of image retrieval measured by the success rate calculated in terms of the number of retrieved images; time efficiency measured by the average time, in seconds, used to retrieve an image; human efficiency measured in terms of the human effort represented per average number of queries necessary to retrieve an image; and the satisfaction of the image searcher measured by the self-evaluation of the participant of the retrieval process after each completed task. This research shows that in terms of ordinary image indexing representing everyday-life objects, the two approaches investigated are fundamentally distinct on the terminological, perceptual, and structural perspective. Additionally, the analysis of the characteristics of the two indexing approaches reveals that if the indexing language differs, the characteristics vary little within the same indexing approach. Finally, this research underlines that the two indexing approaches of ordinary images representing everyday-life objects have a retrieval performance that is different in terms of its effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction of the image searcher according to the approach and the language used for indexing.

Knowledge retention at a platinum mine in the North West Province of South Africa

Makhubela, Salmon Salba 02 1900 (has links)
Knowledge retention plays an important role in combating organisational knowledge loss. However, some organisations, including mining companies, still lose organisational knowledge due to employees retiring, resigning, downsizing, attrition and so on. This leaves the companies with a shortage of qualified and senior, experienced employees to meet production needs, which has a negative impact on the running of the operational functions on a day-to-day basis. This qualitative study utilised the knowledge-retention model as a theoretical framework to investigate knowledge-retention strategies at a platinum mine in the North West province in South Africa. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 employees of the platinum mine in North West province who were chosen purposively, as well as organisational document review. The key findings revealed that although the mine has a knowledge-retention policy, some of the employees are not aware of its existence and there is no enough investment in knowledge-retention initiatives within the organisation. The study concludes by arguing that having knowledge retention policy, strategies and initiatives on paper but failing to implement is as good as not having it. The study recommends that management become involved, support knowledge-retention initiatives, and ensure that knowledge retention policy is implemented in the organisation. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)
