Waters edge: inhabiting the riverscape

Greenham, Corey 24 July 2012 (has links)
Waters Edge began with the inspiration to be closer to water and progressed into exploring architecture within the inhabitation of the riverscape through the vehicle of an urban kayak station. A 1:1 scaled kayak was constructed to materialize the conceptual research and provide a means to understand the relationship between built form and water. The necessity of each line and material component in the kayak construction manifested itself into the making of the urban kayak station. Further research into the St. Johns rowing regatta and boat making enhanced the social aspect of revitalizing Winnipeg’s river culture. A series of architectural models and drawings were constructed to explore the conceptualizations of the research and multiple iterations of the project emerged. The research concludes with further exploration into the way we inhabit the riverscape.

Habitar: cidade e habitação social moderna em Medellín, 1940-1972 / Inhabiting: city and modern housing in Medellin: 1940-1972

Calle, Juan José Cuervo 20 September 2016 (has links)
This research presents the study on housing and the city between 1940 and 1972 time frame highlighted by the development of urban and architectural solutions of the highest quality ; process I entered a period of decline from the second half of 1970. The distribution pattern of the coral-inhabiting snail Coralliophila violacea around the waters of Taiwan

Chen, Huang-ju 18 September 2006 (has links)
The coral-inhabiting snail Coralliophila violacea is a common species in the Indo-Pacific coral reefs and it usually lives on the surface of its host, Porites spp. In this study, field survey on the distribution of C. violacea on poritid corals, Porites spp. among sites were conducted. And the influence of flow rate on the distribution of snails was also examined through a simulation model. The sampling sites were northeastern of Taiwan, Taitung, Penghu, Lutao, Hsiao-liu-chiu and Lanyu. The presence of spatial variability in the relative abundance of C. violacea on porited corals has been observed. The highest percentage of corals with snails was in northeastern Taiwan, i.e. 45% and the lowest ones were in Lutao and Lanyu, i.e. 12%. The distribution of snails among sites were heterogeneous (X2-test of independence; p<0.001). Significant differences of shell length in snails among sites were also found. Among them, the distribution pattern of shell length in snails from Lutao and Lanyu was not normal. Difference in the age-distribution of snails among sites was present. In general, five and six years old snails were most abundant. A lack of snails under two years old had been found in Lutao, Lanyu and Penghu. Based on the simulated downward trajectory of snail larvae, it was indicated that a minimum substratum for larval settlement varied with flow rates and depth of water.

Embodiment - Architecture, Body and Mind (Inhabiting Urban Markers)

Hajric, Elma 20 January 2006 (has links)
What a human being can experience and how can it make sense of that experience depends not only on one's body, but also on its interaction with the environment. It is through our embodiment that we inhabit the world and through our body that we act within it. Embodiment is not about the body per se, but about the culture. According to Merleau-Ponty, "the body is never isolated in its activity, but always already engaged in the world." Our embodiment is always mediated by our interaction with other human and/or non-human bodies. Embodiment is experienced through substance, quality, as well as existence associated with specific space and time. Bodies are pre-consciously aware of their existence and consciously ask questions regarding their own being and that others. Bodies also have to be aware of their own historical development and their boundaries. This can only be applied to human beings, because only human beings are capable of asking questions and being aware of things. For non-human beings their existence is only experienced by its "showing" to us. My thesis concentrates on the connection between the human body, its activity, and of the world. It examines what effect our bodily experience has on our understanding of the world by exploring how our body is positioned in space relative to the environment around us. This thesis is studied through a series of four specific design interventions or embodiments. When the diamond of Washington D.C. was surveyed in 1791, mile markers were placed to manifest the invisible boundary. For the sites, I am using the four Corner-Stone locations of this boundary. By using such modest monuments as locations for my sites, I am hoping to extend public awareness of the historical importance of these markers that has been lost over time. These individual markers work together in order to embody one thing - the district. By elaborating spaces around them, the public would have a chance to explore the spatial quality of the environment; as well as their relation to the cultural and historical embodiment of the city. Through this project I studied architectural embodiment through the making present of the invisible survey line of the district boundary. / Master of Architecture

Franco, Thiago Cardoso 25 March 2019 (has links)
This research arose from the problematic of verifying the connection mode of the non- Western landscapes from the communicative forms of inhabiting Krahô. I sought to investigate the connection of landscapes, in non-digital and digital environments. Research is not organized in the linear subject-object relationship. All the field exercises involved the participation of several groups in the perception of the data and in this way it is a reticular narrative. I start from the assumptions that the Krahô, in digital network, connect with a cosmological diversity, that escaped of the tax dichotomies of the West. In performing their landscapes, the Krahô leave traces, which can be perceived. His images reveal different ways of dwelling and narrating the world. I also realize that the Krahô elements undergo transubstantiation without losing the first essence. The theoretical objectives sought to contribute to the elaboration of a network theory of communication, which includes network networks, based on an experience with the Krahô community.

Holanda, Jorge Garcia de January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation aims to discuss narratives of homeless people that reveal the ways how the they think and live the life on the streets. This work is the result of an ethnography in the city of Fortaleza/CE, made beetween 2015 and 2016. From the reports of four people (Roberto, Josué, Julia e Paulista) who throughout the fieldwork have become key interlocutors of the research, I seek to discuss how some categories are defined by these people. This categories are the next: morador de rua, sistema da rua and se virar. Starting from the notion that movement and knowledge are simultaneously coproduced in the processes of inhabiting the streets, I try here to discuss the micropolitics of these categories, pointing to the ways they are operationalized as a practical knowledge in the paths of these people in the city.

Tomaz Zan, Vitor 24 May 2019 (has links)
This study of 20 of the most inventive Brazilian fiction and documentary films produced between 2005 and 2017 reveals how they share central concerns related to the urban environment. The act of inhabiting becomes a point of convergence between social activism and artistic ambition in these films. The notion of territory, which adds a political dimension to the conception of space, is key to this analysis of recent Brazilian cinema, which seeks to identify trends in the works examined without ignoring the filmmakers’ individual styles.
