Developing Interactional Competence Through Video-Based Computer-Mediated Conversations: Beginning Learners of Spanish

This dissertation examines the discourse produced by beginning learners of Spanish using social media. Specifically, it looks at the use and development of interactional resources during two video-mediated conversations. Through a combination of Conversation Analysis tools and quantitative data analysis, the use of turn-taking strategies, repair trajectories, and alignment moves was examined to discover how beginning language learners manage videoconferencing exchanges and develop their interactional capabilities in this new interactional setting. The goal of this investigation was twofold: 1) to describe and explain how students construct, manage and maintain conversations via videoconferencing, and 2) to gain a better understanding of the links between technology-based social media and language learning. The results of this study indicate that instructional videoconferencing conversations display their own clearly delimited and idiosyncratic organization of interactional features. In terms of turn-taking, the results of the analyses demonstrate that beginning learners are fully capable of participating competently in speaker selection to manage a conversation with a peer of similar proficiency level. In the area of repair, the analyses show that, during instructional videoconferencing exchanges, beginning learners orient to both the communication of personal meaning and the accuracy of their discourse. They enact this orientation through the use of self-initiated self-repair. Finally, with regard to the use of alignment moves, the analyses reveal that, in tune with their nascent linguistic and interactional abilities, beginning learners use primarily acknowledgement moves.

Examining typologies and outcomes of children and adolescents in psychiatric residential treatment facilities

The purpose of this dissertation was to expand the understanding of youth in psychiatric residential treatment facilities by using psychosocial indicators to develop subgroup profiles. Additionally, differences in treatment outcomes between subgroups and the extent to which within-treatment factors accounted for observed differences in treatment outcomes between subgroups were examined. Data were extracted from the case records of 447 youth who were served in psychiatric residential treatment facilities over a seven year span of time. A latent class analysis was used to identify and describe subgroups. A series of multivariate regression analyses were used to examine group differences in functional impairment at discharge. Next, a path analysis was used to determine if there were differences in average change in functional impairment from admission to discharge between subgroups and to test within treatment factors as potential mediators of group differences. Finally, a logistic regression was used to determine if there were differences between groups in the probability of discharging to a community-based placement or discharging to another congregate care facility. The latent class analysis revealed four distinct subgroups of youth. The analyses of treatment outcomes revealed statistically significant differences in the level of functional impairment at discharge and average change in impairment between groups. Results from the path model of indirect effects supported that within treatment factors accounted for a statistically significant proportion of the observed difference in change between groups. No differences were found in discharge placement outcomes between groups. Implications for future research, practice and policies focused on youth in residential treatment are discussed.

Interactional competence in paired speaking tests: role of paired task and test-taker speaking ability in co-constructed discourse

This dissertation centers on the under-researched construct of interactional competence, which refers to features of jointly constructed discourse. When applied to the testing of speaking skills in a second language, interactional competence refers to features of the discourse that the two students produce together; rather than the speaking ability or performance of each person individually. This dissertation describes the construct of interactional competence in a low-stakes, paired speaking test setting targeted at students in their second year of German instruction at the college level. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, the study analyzes the conversational resources that are co-constructed in the test discourse to maintain mutual understanding, which is considered the basis for interactional competence. Second, the study examines the impact of task (jigsaw task and discussion task) and speaking ability-level combination (same and different ability) in the test-taker pair on the co-constructed test discourse and thus on the deployment of the conversational resources to maintain intersubjectivity. In that respect, this study also seeks to analyze how the identified conversational resources are involved in establishing and negotiating language ability identities that are displayed in the test discourse. Conversation analytic conventions were used to investigate the interactional resources that test takers deploy to maintain mutual understanding. The procedures of repair (self-repair in response to other-initiated repair, inter-turn delays, and misunderstandings as well as other-repair in conjunction with word search activities) that emerged from the inductive analysis of the test discourse have broadened the conceptualization of interactional competence in the context of paired speaking assessments. Frequency distributions of the interactional resources were created to provide a better understanding of the impact of task and ability-level combination on the co-constructed repair procedures. The rationale behind this analysis is the general understanding of language testers that both resources and context influence test performance. The findings from the quantitative analysis suggest that there are more similarities than differences in repair use across the jigsaw task and the discussion task. In addition, even though some trends in the co-construction of repair procedures may be attributed to the higher or lower speaking ability of the test takers, the relationship between the ability-level combination in the pair and the use of repair seems to be rather variable. Finally, to learn more about the interrelationship between test takers’ speaking ability and interactional competence, this dissertation also approached speaking ability in terms of test takers’ co-constructed language ability identities that are displayed in the test discourse. By means of single case analyses, the study provided a detailed picture of the relationship between language ability identities and the procedures of repair, both of which are co-constructed at the discourse level. The findings from the conversation analysis show that the speaker who provides the repair is usually able to position himself or herself as the more competent or proficient speaker in the test discourse.

The word amongst us : a descriptive study of the perceptions of communication problems in a traditionally hierarchical organisation moving to a more lateral form of collaborative ministry

This paper attempts to isolate some implications for secondary and adult education emerging from an exploratory study of perceived effective interactional communication in a religious organisation. Leaders of the local parishes of the Catholic Church in Australia are in the process of moving from the traditional basic communication structure of an hierarchical model to the lateral and collaborative interaction of a more participative model of management. This descriptive study records the perceptions of a sample of parish workers in the Church throughout Australia as they describe some of the problems they experienced in communication processes and attempted to identify the reason why these problems emerged. In doing so, they also identified the more effective communication processes emerging in this new form of pastoral ministry. They listed a number of attitudes which they believed would lead to greater communication effectiveness and without which genuine constructive communication usually does not take place (Carl Rogers 1957 in Bolton, 1983 p. 259). The media and written communication are not explored, except in their relation to effective meeting procedures. Verbal and non-verbal communication amongst people interacting with one another in the interpersonal organisational setting is the focus of this work. The findings of this study point in the short term, to the need for empowering people engaged in pastoral work with the necessary skills of effective communication processes. In the long term, the paper proposes the need for continuing educational emphasis on communication skills especially in secondary schools when students move towards a more personalised form of self-assertion.

Die multimodale Darstellung von Mitleid in Erzählaktivitäten / The multimodal display of sympathy in storytellings

In dieser konversationsanalytisch-interaktionslinguistischen Arbeit werden verbale, para-verbale und nonverbale Ressourcen zur Darstellung des Affekts Mitleid im Rahmen der sozialen Aktivität Erzählung untersucht. Grundlage der Analyse sind Video- und Audiodaten deutscher Gespräche. Es wird einerseits aufgezeigt, welche Ressourcen von Erzählerinnen eingesetzt werden, um affektive Reaktionen relevant zu machen (z.B. Blickverhalten, Augenbrauenbewegungen, rhetorische Mittel), andererseits wird beschrieben, welche spezifischen Ressourcen zur Darstellung von Mitleid eingesetzt werden (z.B. Interjektionen mit spezifischen Tonhöhenverläufen, „arme/r/s + S“-Konstruktionen, Handbewegungen). Es wird zudem demonstriert, dass es sich bei der Darstellung von Mitleid um ein interaktiv hergestelltes, soziales Phänomen handelt. Anhand des metakommunikativen Wissens der Sprecher, das sprachlich relevant gemacht wird und somit für die Analyse zugänglich ist, kann eine grundlegende soziale Regel zur Darstellung von Mitleid herausgearbeitet werden: Voraussetzung für Mitleid bzw. seine Darstellung ist eine spezifische Qualität der sozialen Beziehung zu der ‚consequential figure‘ (Maynard 1997). Nur wenn diese vorhanden ist bzw. interaktiv hergestellt wird, kann eine Mitleidsdarstellung in einer Erzählung über problematische Themen relevant gemacht werden und der lokalen Herstellung von sozialer Nähe zwischen den Gesprächsteilnehmern dienen. / The thesis explores the verbal, para-verbal and nonverbal resources which speakers deploy in everyday conversation to display sympathy in the course of the social activity storytelling. The analysis draws upon Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics and is based on video and audio data of German talk-in-interaction. It will be shown which resources can be used by storytellers to make affective reactions relevant (e.g. gaze, eye brow movements, rhetorical devices) and which resources are deployed by recipients to display sympathy (e.g. interjections with specific pitch contours, ‘poor+N’-constructions, hand gestures). It will also be demonstrated how participants manage the transition from problematic phases of storytelling to subsequent talk, e.g. by contextualizing it as more humorous. Furthermore, participants provide access to their meta-communicative knowledge of when and how to display sympathy appropriately by making it linguistically relevant in the interaction. Thus, from these observations, it is possible to assume certain feeling and/or display rules for this specific kind of emotive involvement. The overall findings of this study are that a) it seems that a specific quality of the relationship to the ‘consequential figure’ (Maynard 1997) is a prerequisite for displaying sympathy, and b) social closeness may be created locally within the interaction through the affect display.

The Everyday Practice of School Bullying : Children's participation in peer group activities and school-based anti-bullying initiatives

This thesis explores the everyday practice of school bullying by examining children's participation in peer group activities as well as in school-based anti-bullying activities within an educational setting. The empirical material is drawn from a long-term (1 year) ethnographic study conducted among preadolescent children in a 5th grade class in a Swedish elementary school. An ethnomethodological approach is used in analysis of ethnographically based fieldnotes, and in detailed analysis of video recordings collected during participant observations.    The first study examines, through elaborated investigation of a peer group's everyday peer encounters, how social exclusion is situated within the flow of intricate, subtle and seemingly innocent interactions. In this, the study offers detailed information about how girls' everyday peer group interactions, taken across a range of activities, may be consequential for the process of social exclusion.    The second study examines the interactional moral work accomplished within the situated practice of ART classroom sessions on moral reasoning used as part of the school's anti-bullying prevention program. The study contributes an understanding of the interactional managment of children's moral stance-taking, something that has previously been overshadowed by the quest to project the outcomes for individual children's moral reasoning. The third study examines a gossip dispute event, in which a group of girls take action against another girl for reporting school bullying to the teacher. The study demonstrates how, as the gossip dispute unfolds, the girls accused of bullying appropriate and even subvert the social organization of the school's anti-bullying program, and manage to turn the tables so that the girl initially reporting to be a victim of bullying is cast as an instigator, and the girls accused of the bullying as victims of false accusations.    The thesis illuminates the complex meanings and functions of social actions referred to as bullying within a school context and in the literature. Also, it sheds light on the difficulties that come with teachers' attempts to structure children's social relationships. All in all, the thesis illuminates the need to challange an individualistic approach to bullying, recognizing the social and moral orders children orient to in their everyday life at school.

There have been good arguments made for the development of aggressive affirmative action policies with the end goal of quickly moving black South Africans into corporate and high ranks within management of organisations. One of the central arguments in favour of aggressive AA policies is the risk of racial polarization post-apartheid should a quick fix not be initiated. It makes good business and economic sense for AA policies to be implemented as black consumers coupled with black managers will have the eventual end point of lower unemployment and crime, through job creation and security of the representative majority.

Manifestarsi plurilingui a tavola : La commutazione di codice di una famiglia italo-svedese

The aim of the present study is to examine the interactional functions of code-switching in plurilingual conversation, with a particular focus on those related to the elaboration of the social identities of the interlocutors, i. e. their identity work. The adopted analytical model was initiated by Auer, and further developed by Gafaranga, who combined it with the Membership Categorization Analysis elaborated by Sacks. The study is based on a corpus consisting of the audio recorded dinner talk of an Italian-Swedish family whose members use Swedish, Italian and a Ligurian dialect, and focuses on the sequential progression of the talk in interaction, thus based on an approach proper of conversation analysis. The participants create and display their different roles (identities), which are related to both group membership and individuality, a subsequent distinction made by Fant. Code-switching is used as a communicative strategy among the speakers and is used to make relevant identities, as well as a tool for the management of the interaction. The analysis is divided in two distinctive parts: one related to the code-switching connected to the organisational management of the conversation, the other connected to the identity work of the interlocutors. The linguistic codes used within the group are either inclusive (Swedish, Italian) or selective (Ligurian) and the analysis indicates a general inclusion rather than exclusion of interlocutors, as the speakers accommodating to the linguistic preferences and competences of the interlocutor. The speakers, when selecting a code, thus make use of recipient design, a concept worked out by Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson. They choose code in order to include a particular interlocutor, adjusting to the language preferences of the other. There are some instances of asymmetrical plurilingual conversation, in which the interlocutors maintain different codes, but since the code choice appears to be anticipated by the addressee the interaction runs smoothly between them. As for the direction of the code switch, two different tendencies emerge: one in the switches connected to the identity work of the participants in which the direction of the switches seems to be highly significant. The other in the switches connected to the management of the conversation in which the direction proves to be reversible.

An Investigation On Customer Interactional Principles And Face-threatening Speech Act Performance In Service Encounters: The Case Of Turkish And English

This thesis investigates self-guiding sociopragmatic interactional principles (SIP) in communication and choice of linguistic strategies of politeness during service encounters in Turkish and English. To this end, two questionnaires were administered to 67 monolingual native speakers of English (ENS) by online administration and 85 monolingual native speakers of Turkish (TNS) by pen and paper administration who were all university students. Data were collected (1) by a SIP questionnaire to determine what principles are important in deciding what to say, and (2) by a linguistic strategies of politeness questionnaire (LSQ) to determine the strategies subjects would employ in conflict-generating service encounters. Three sociopragmatic interactional superprinciples were identified through factor analysis, namely (a) Tact (cost-benefit), (b) Relational Communicative Style, and (c) Task achievement. It has been found that face is of central value in communication and the key to the design of politeness and that its maintenance appears to be a prerequisite to adjusting communicative style and goal-orientation. Results indicate that the major differences between TNS and ENS were related to the principles of &amp / #8216 / sounding restrained&amp / #8217 / , &amp / #8216 / sounding humorous&amp / #8217 / , and &amp / #8216 / sounding warm and friendly&amp / #8217 / . The principles of &amp / #8216 / hinting&amp / #8217 / and &amp / #8216 / clarity&amp / #8217 / were not found as opposites for the TNS whereas they were in negative correlation for the ENS. Moreover, findings for the LSQ demonstrate that realization of self-goal was more important for TNS than ENS as reflected in conflict-maximizing linguistic strategy choice. The study underscores the need for a novel approach to politeness that incorporates SIPs choice of linguistic strategy.

The Research of Organizational Citizenship Behavior for Contracted Employees and Formal Employees in the Legislative Yuan¡ÐThe Moderating Effect of Organizational Justice Abstract The organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is altruistic behavior beyond formal norms performed by members of an organization. Empirically, it has been established that OCB serves to lubricate within-organizational interactions, enhance organizational performance, improve service quality as well as customer satisfaction, and helps to prevent members from leaving the organization. Given these facts, OCB is especially important to the service-oriented public sector. Up to this stage, however, we have seen relatively few local discussions on how OCB can be affected by employment status, and even less on the moderating variables that influence the relationship between OCB and employment status. The purpose of this research is to study differences in organizational citizenship behavior between contracted and formal employees in the Legislative Yuan. Furhtermore, the study tries to explore how organizational justice moderates the impact employment status has on organizational citizenship behavior. The major findings of this study are as following: (1) Relative to formal employees, contracted employees are less conscientious,but not significantly different in the ¡§en-teamed¡¨, ¡§loyalty¡¨ and ¡§enthusiasm¡¨ variables. (2) The moderating effect of organizational justice is obvious. There are significant differences between contracted and formal employees in their ¡§en-team¡¨, ¡§conscientiousness¡¨, ¡§loyalty¡¨ and ¡§enthusiasm¡¨. Contracted employees scored lower than formal employees in these variables.
