The Renovation of Post World War Two Ranch House Interiors: Case Study - Wood's House C. 1947

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: Mid-Century ranch house architecture and design is significant to the architectural landscape of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The increasing age of the city's post-WWII properties is creating a need for renovation and rehabilitation, and new technologies have created modern conveniences for today's homeowners, changing interior space plan requirements. These homeowners will need guidance to alter these properties correctly and to preserve the home's essential features. This thesis analyzes the design trends and materials used during the mid-twentieth century, and demonstrates methods for applying them to a current renovation project. The research outlined in this document proves that it is possible to maintain historic integrity, include "Green" design strategies, and apply contemporary technology to a modern ranch renovation. / M.S.D. Pattern Language: A Design Tool for Collaborative Work Environments

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Interior design continues to re-define itself as a discipline that presents designers with new problems that require innovative solutions. This is particularly true in the case in office design. The transformation of the office environment from the standard bullpen configuration to today's dynamic, flexible, and open floor plans has required new design methodologies that incorporate tools and technologies that are readily available to interior designers. Today, increased use of teams in the workplace challenges interior designers to create environments that accommodate both group and individual tasks (Brill, Weidermann & BOSTI associates, 2001). Collaboration has received considerable attention as organizations focus on productivity and reducing costs to compete in a global economy (Hassanain, 2006). Designers and architects should learn to create environments that respond to dynamic, moveable, and flexible work methods. This web-based research study explores the use of pattern language as a new tool for designing collaborative work environments. In 1977, Christopher Alexander and his associates developed `Pattern language' (Alexander, Ishikawa & Silverstein, 1977) as a design formulation methodology. It consists of a series of interrelated physical elements combined to create a framework for design solutions. This pattern language tool for collaborative work environments was created based on research by Lori Anthony (2001). This study further builds upon current trends and research in collaborative work environments. The researcher conducted a pilot test by sending the web-based tool and an online questionnaire to all graduate students and faculty members in the fields of interior design and healthcare and healing environment (HHE). After testing its validity in The Design School at Arizona State University, the same tool and questionnaire was sent to the employees of one of the leading architecture and interior design firms in Phoenix, AZ. The results showed that among those design professionals surveyed, the majority believe pattern language could be a valuable design tool. The insights obtained from this study will provide designers, architects, and facility managers with a new design tool to aid in creating effective collaborative spaces in a work environment. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.D. O papel do design de interiores na comunicação de uma marca: o caso Melissa.

Stella Spagolla Hermida Martin 09 September 2010 (has links)
This research intends to deepen the question of communication through built spaces, more specifically in the playful universe of the stores and their brand representation. We aimed to analyse and understand how the branding discourse, representative of the consumer society, is manifested in the constructed object and the environment established for it. We have used theories of Gilles Lipovetsky and Everardo Rocha about consumerism and its representation in modern-contemporary society as well as methods of analysis based on Lucia Santaella Pierces semiotics theories . Therefore, we have built a theoretical framework that allows us to understand the manifestation of a brand oriented by consumption phenomenon; its forms of representation, identity and also its role in commercial interior spaces.

Nature Inspired Interior Design Principles in the Hot Arid Climate of Saudi Arabia

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Biomimicry is an approach that entails understanding the natural system and designs and mimicking them to create new non-biological systems that can solve human problems. From bio-based material development to biologically inspired designs, architects and designers excelled in highlighting the fascination of integrating the biomimetic thinking process into the modern design that provides more comfortable space in which to live. This thesis explores how historical sustainable strategies from Islamic traditional architecture incorporated natural design system that could now be appropriately applied to interior architecture. In addition, it explores the current existing problems in this field and the possibilities of biomimetic sustainable solutions for existing buildings in the hot dry climate regions of Saudi Arabia. The author concentrates on examining Islamic traditional architecture where the past architects incorporated certain aspects of nature in their construction and through using local resources, built buildings that mitigated heat and provided protection from cold. As a result of completing this research, it was found that there are common characteristics between the traditional Islamic architecture elements and system solutions found in some natural organisms. Characteristics included, for example, evaporative cooling, stuck effect, and avoiding heat gain. However, in the natural world, there is always opportunities to further explore more about the impacts of biomimicry and natural strategies applicable to enhance interior environments of buildings. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Design 2016

The aging of population has been object of concerns of researchers from different areas, especially because, in the last decades, there was a significant increase in the number of elderly people, both global perspective and Brazil. Concurrently with this growth, it is also occurring the increase in the number of falls, frequent in this part of the population, and the factors related to the physical environment appear as the most common cause in the falls of older people. Thus, the research seeks to identify which extrinsic factors to the individual and related to the physical environment of interior design contribute to the fall risk of older people in home environments. The study took place in the theoretical field from the survey of the state of the art and, in the practical field, with the target population, listing and categorizing the elements of the interior design present in domiciles. To carry out the empirical survey were selected, randomly, 95 elderly from the Centro de Convivência do Idoso Dona Itália Franco (Dona Itália Franco Community Center for the Elderly), in Juiz de Fora(MGBrazil)where techniques and instruments of Post-Occupancy Evaluation were used; at first, with interviews and then, with the walkthrough, combining observation of the housing environments visited with new interviews. The theoretical research data were complemented with the data from the empirical survey. Finally, the elements of the home built environment were systematically listed, through the elaboration of a diagram from the listed categories, showing the complexity of the interior design in the relation with the fall risk in the elderly population. As a product, the diagrams are presented with the elements of interior design identified in the study as intrinsic to the built environment and extrinsic to the individual, and that were presented as influencers of fall risk in elderly people in home environments, which are organized in two large groups: the edification categories and the interior space categories. At the end, the sight is to attract new looks and more critical focus to the inconsistencies present in the physical environment domiciled for the elderly. That categorization contribute to the comprehension and elucidation of the causal phenomena, allowing that way, the development of measures and effective preventive actions from the possibility of appropriation of content analyzed by part of the built environment planning sectors.

Experiential Hospitality Environments: The Roles of the Interior Architectural Features in Affording Meanings of Place

Pelaez, Tari 09 November 2011 (has links)
People’s authentic sense of place is being overshadowed by less authentic experiences referred to as placelessness. Consequently, a demand for experiential interior environments has surfaced. Experiential environmental and place attachment theories suggested that the relationships between self, others, and the environment are what encourage users in creating meaningful authentic experiences. This qualitative study explored the roles of the experiential interior architectural features in affording users of hospitality environments higher-level needs, such as meanings of place. For the case study, ten participants stayed at a hotel for two nights. Participants were given a guided list of ten facets of an experience, which was insidiously structured by both experiential environmental and place attachment theories. The participants used photographs to document each of the facets on the guided list. The photos were then used during the photo elicitation interviews, which evoked additional qualitative information. Participants identified specific interior architectural features and described them using the themes associated to place attachment theories. The findings revealed that the interior architectural features might enrich the meanings a person associates with a given place. Possibly affording users higher-level needs. As a result, if an experiential interior environment allows users to foster relationships between self, others, and the physical environment, they may experience more authentic experiences and give more meanings to a place.

Volvo Abisko

Vahtola, Antti January 2020 (has links)
Volvo Abisko is proposing the possibility to experience the Arctic wilderness and the surrounding nature in a responsible way. The author has been hiking in the north, every time asking - what if everybody could experience this? Would it be possible to get into the wild with minimal impact on the environment? What if you wouldn’t need the expertise, the knowledge, or even the equipment to get into the pristine nature and to interact with the untouched Arctic? Volvo Abisko is representing the dream of offering this experience for a broader audience. Abisko - Ábeskovvu in the Same language - is one of the oldest national parks in Northern Sweden, which has been home to the Sami who followed herds of wilds between the forest land and the mountains. Ábeskovvu - “the forest by the great water”, where “the great water” refers to Scandinavia’s largest mountain lake Torneträsk. There were several moral questions during the process - is it the right choice to encourage people to visit these pristine areas? If the goal is to reduce the impact on nature, is it the right choice to create a physical service in such a fragile region? During the research and process, the decision was to design something that people can physically visit. Even if the digital appliances open a lot of opportunities, such as virtual traveling by virtual reality, the author believes that the experience is ideal when the user can engage all the senses to feel the surrounding nature. The idea of proposing sustainable development through design, instead of restricting access from people to certain regions, was quiding the project during the way. The creative process followed the boundaries set by the research, and the seamless functionality of the whole service was the priority. Analog sketching was the primary tool to discover shapes, and exploring the form in 3D helped to understand the space and to make multiple objects to work as one. The design focus of this project is transportation as a service, which is applied to the growing Arctic tourism sector. The concept includes an electric vertical takeoff vehicle (eVTOL) and a cabin, which is designed to be used with the vehicle. The vehicle enables a safe and exciting journey into the wild, letting the users observe the environment from the bird’s perspective. Eventually, the vehicle can land on the cabin, which is designed to give shelter for the users to spend time in the wild - being a base for a hiking adventure or just an attractive place to spend a night in solitude.
