Children Adopted Internationally Examining Developmental Status At Arrival and Six Month Follow Up

In the past 5 years, almost 100,000 children have been internationally adopted. Research suggests that many of these children have growth and developmental delays, but few large scale studies have been completed. In the current study data obtained from a restrospective chart review of 534 children followed in the International Adoption Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center between 1999 and 2007 was analyzed. Prevalence of developmental delays and sensory processing issues initially and after 6 months in country, the relationship of delays/issues with previously identified risk factors, and the frequency of recommendations for early intervention (EI) and therapy services were all examined. Results demonstrated the following: 1) Development: most children fell > 1SD below the mean in at least one developmental domain (Vineland Developmental Motor Scales) initially, however improvements in developmental scores were noted between initial and follow up visits. The number of children with a delay in at least one domain dropped from 58% (initial visit) to 44% (follow up). Developmental scores at six months had the strongest correlation with age at time of adoption; children adopted at older ages had lower scores at follow up. 2) Sensory processing: Infant/toddler sensory profile scores for children aged 1-3 were compared at initial and follow up visits. The percentage of children with atypical scores in at least one area of sensory processing decreased from 68% initially to 48% by follow up. Similarly, children > 3 years of age demonstrated improvements in sensory processing; at follow up, only 15% had an atypical total score on the short sensory profile compared to 42% initially. 3) Referral: Referral data was available for 61% of children; of these approximately half received a recommendation for additional services. Most referrals were for EI services (31%); 22% received a referral to speech therapy, and 12% received referrals to PT and OT. Consistent with other work, a significant number of internationally adopted children demonstrate delays in developmental skills and sensory processing abilities. Although improvements in these areas were generally noted, developmental delays and sensory processing issues remained for some children 6 months after adoption. Over half of the children received recommendations for additional services; this number increased for those with more significant delays.

Thank you. / After the 1989 fall of Communism in Romania, the world became aware of the plight of the country's thousands of institutionalized children, and an international adoption system saw the adoption of many of these children to other countries. Thousands of children, however, remained in institutions as the newly Democratic Romania struggled with the legacy of its Communist era. During the process of applying to join the European Union, Romania in 2000 initiated the eventual banning of international adoption. Using a qualitative approach that relies on interviews, document review, and observation, this study finds both positive and negative interpretations of the ban, with subjects pointing to Romania's desire to join the EU as a supposed major factor in its decision to ban international adoption. The implications of the ban include the emergence of a foster care system and domestic adoption, efforts to reunify families and to prevent the abandonment, relinquishment, and removal of children from their biological families, and the development of alternative forms of care in tandem with a new deinstitutionalization initiative. / 2031-01-02

A Narrative Study About International Adopted Young Adults' Experiences Regarding Identity Development

This study was based on three interviews with three internationally adopted young adults. The aim of the study was to explore how international adopted young adults have experienced their identity development in a retrospective perspective in relation to family and friends. To answer the research-questions semi-structured qualitative inter­views have been performed. A narrative method was chosen to explore how the parti­cipants' described their experiences. Topics that appeared in the result where topics such as family relationships, the society’s influence on the participants and connections to other adoptees. The conclusions of this study were that com­muni­cation and connections to family was an essential factor in the subjects' identity develop­ment. The informants feeling of belonging was affected by society´s influence on appearances and it was important for the participants to have someone in their life that they could talk to and get support from.

A presente pesquisa visa uma análise aprofundada da cooperação jurídica internacional no campo da adoção internacional, bem como um estudo sobre os efeitos deste tipo de adoção na nacionalidade da pessoa adotada. Pesquisar os procedimentos e regras que compõe o arcabouço jurídico da cooperação internacional em matéria de adoção, e verificar como Brasil e Japão realizam a integração desta pessoa legalmente em seus sistemas jurídicos. É cada vez mais crescente o número de refugiados em países em constantes crises humanitárias e onde crianças morrem diariamente por motivos como a inanição, doenças sem tratamento e como vítimas de guerras civis intermináveis. A adoção internacional é, portanto, um dos instrumentos internacionais e humanitários que permite a aproximação de casais que buscam constituir ou ampliar uma família, e crianças espalhadas pelo mundo desejosas para terem um lar e uma família, é a aplicação da cooperação jurídica internacional em prol da solidariedade. Diretamente relacionado com o instituto da adoção internacional, a preocupação de qual será a nacionalidade que o adotado terá após a decisão que concederá a adoção em definitivo. Esta análise se torna relevante, pois a pessoa adotada após todos os procedimentos legais da adoção passará a responder e a viver em um novo universo jurídico, com deveres e direitos novos para ela. Le travail de thèse présenté porte sur l'observation de la pratique opérationelle del'intercompréhension selon une perspective de recherche inhabituelle. En effet, si sonpotentiel en tant qu'approche plurilingue de l'enseignement des langues étrangères estdésormais largement reconnu, l'apport de l'intercompréhension en tant que stratégie demédiation dans des espaces de diversité linguistique reste fortement sous exploré. Afin derelever le défi lancé par le 7ème projet de recherche MIME – mobilité et inclusion dans uneEurope multilingue, le champ d'application de l'intercompréhension a été élargi et testé dansdes environnements multilingues spontanés, résultant de la mobilité des citoyens européensavec une attention particulière accordée aux rapports d'inclusion des individus mobiles. Enparticulier, le terrain d'essai de cette étude a été la communication des familles issues del'adoption à l'international comme exemple de communautés qui se construisent à partir dudéplacement de leur barycentre géographique, culturel et linguistique. La méthodologieutilisée dans notre recherche a été organisée selon une structure "à pyramide inversée" quipermet d'observer le phénomène en question selon deux perspectives complémentaires : laperspective émique de l'entretien semi-structurée et la perspective étique de l'observationdirecte. D'après nos résultats, dans un cadre de langues voisines et apparentées,l'intercompréhension émerge spontanément à la fois comme solution adaptative pourcontourner les défis imposés par la diversité linguistique et, ce qui est le plus important,comme espace communicatif orienté vers l'inclusion de l'enfant et de sa langue d'origine.Cette recherche montre tout l'intérêt d'élargir l'observation des applications del'intercompréhension dans l'expérience complexe et évolutive de la mobilité et de favoriser samise en oeuvre des locuteurs au moyen d'une formation ciblée aux contextes pluriels. / The study on which the following thesis is based focuses on discussing intercomprehensionfrom an unusual research perspective. Indeed, while its potential as a multilingual approach toforeign language teaching is now widely recognized, the value of intercomprehension as amediation strategy in contexts of linguistic diversity remains largely under-explored. In orderto meet the challenge of the 7th research project MIME - Mobility and inclusion inmultilingual Europe, the scope of intercomprehension has been broadened and tested inspontaneous multilingual environments, that were shaped by the mobility of Europeancitizens, with particular focus on mechanisms of inclusion for mobile individuals. Inparticular, the test case of this study has been the communication of international adoptivefamilies, which are examples of communities that are built on the reorganization ofgeographical, cultural and linguistic references. The methodology used in our research wasorganized according to an "inverted pyramid" structure that makes it possible to observe thephenomenon in question according to two complementary perspectives: the emic perspectiveof the semi-structured interview and the etic perspective of direct observation. According toour results, in a framework of mutually intelligible languages, intercomprehension emergesspontaneously both as an adaptive solution to overcome the challenges imposed by linguisticdiversity and, more importantly, as a communicative space oriented greatly towards theinclusion of the child and his or her original language. This research shows the value ofexpanding research into the applications of intercomprehension in the complex and evolvingexperience of mobility and of promoting its informed implementation among speakersthrough targeted training in plural contexts.

Adolescent Behavioral Adjustment in Girls Adopted from China: Examining Pre-adoption and Post-adoption Factors

Despite research that indicates that internationally adopted children are at greater risk for poor developmental outcomes than their non-adopted peers (Bimmel, Juffer, IJzendoorn, Bakermans-Kranenburg, 2003; Juffer, & van IJzendoorn, 2005), girls adopted from China into Western culture tend to thrive, exhibiting high self-esteem, low behavior problems (i.e., both externalizing and internalizing), and excelling academically (Rojewski, Shapiro, & Shapiro, 2000; Tan & Jordan-Arthur, 2012). However, few studies have examined whether this trend continues into adolescence, as well as to what factors lead to these positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate predictors of mental health outcomes among internationally adopted adolescent Chinese girls, particularly factors that predicted levels of internalizing pathology (e.g., depression and anxiety) in adolescence. To fulfill this purpose, a secondary data analysis (N = 167) of information collected as part of a longitudinal study of U.S. international adoptions of Chinese children (2005-present) was completed using a hierarchical regression approach. Overall, these variables (e.g., age at adoption, pre-adoption adversity, family stress, parenting style, adolescent self-esteem, and academic competence) predicted 35% of the variance in internalizing behavior outcomes. The positive adjustment that has been seen in childhood continued to adolescence in this study, with 88% of the adolescent girls reporting Total Internalizing T-scores of less than 60 (i.e., in the normal range) on the Youth Self-Report form on the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001b). Authoritative parenting style and self-esteem showed the strongest relations to internalizing behaviors. Implications of the study for practice and discussion of future research based on these findings are explored.
