In search of Cuban nationalism: transcending borders

Marquetti, Mariem 07 November 2018 (has links)
Nationalism prevails both inside and outside of what is known to be the geographic boundaries of the nation, as seen by immigrants in the United States, for instance, who recreate sociocultural environments that remind them of home. This study focuses on one such case: Cuban nationalism. How is it that nationalism is found among Cubans born and raised in the island and those born and raised outside? What is at the core of this nationalism that connects persons of different national upbringings? It has something to do with a love for the people, but such a hypothesis needed further explanation. Thus, I collected surveys from 46 Cuban Americans and 48 Cubans in the island who answered basic national history and cultural questions, and engaged in thought experiments. Each respondent was assigned a nationalist score (1 to 4) based on their responses, and the mean score values of both samples were calculated. The responses confirmed that Cuban nationalism is indeed an admiration not only for the people, but more for their sociocultural way of being. Moreover, nationalism is thought to be influenced by domestic factors, but it is equally impacted by international ones. Cuba’s involvement in Angola from 1975 to 1989, where more than 500,000 Cubans served, demonstrates this. As it impacted so many Cubans, it is important to ask: to what extent did this foreign affair affect national identities? To address this question, I interviewed 27 internationalists and examined how this event informed national identities among those involved. Overall, the following study provides an in-depth account of Cuban nationalism as a case study to better understand nationalism as a concept.

L' Association internationale des travailleurs après la Révolution espagnole (1939-années 1990) : principes, tactiques et finalités anarcho-syndicalistes : crise permanente et résurgences marginales / International Workers Association after the Spanish Revolution (1939-1990s) : anarcho-syndicalist principles, tactics and aims : permanent crisis and marginal resurgences

Guinchard, François 20 November 2017 (has links)
The International Workers Association was founded in 1922, and is the historical and largest organisation of anarcho-syndicalism, one of the major working class currents, mainly in Europe and Latin America between the 1910 and 1930 decades. The collectivizations in Spain during the civil war represent its biggest fulfillment, while in the other countries the movement allready started to decline. The practical application of the anarcho-syndicalist principles, tactics and aims leads to various re-assessments and internal conflicts. This thesis studies the causes and manifestations of the long term crisis which starts at this moment and goes on throughout the whole XXth century. At the same time as anarcho-syndicalism divides and marginalizes itself, multiform resurgences occurs. This overview enables to discern the transformations of the IWA, of the current and the culture it embodies, and the reasons of their persistence.

The study makes use of the theoretical and methodological model proposed by João Bernardo, and follows Pedrosa's course through several social groups, seeking to understand the intellectual evolution of the author from the ideologies expressed by such groups. The work's objective is to present and provide an explanation to Pedrosa's transition from proletarian internationalism to the Third World nationalism. That explanation centers on the author's institutional trajectory, first through social groups linked to the working class, then through social groups linked to various classes, which is interpreted as the gateway to the Third World nationalism. This study comes to fill a gap in academic research on the author, bringing unknown writings from Pedrosa, mostly from the 1950's, that set him within the field of Brazilian anti-imperialist nationalism, alongside intellectuals linked for instance to the ISEB and other institutions. Pedrosa is best known for his trajectory within the ambit of the arts, the ambit of culture. And his best known political work, and for there is a satisfactory historiographic production, is that one of the 1920's. Thus, through this thesis, we intend to present an intellectual evolution that is unknown in the academic ambit.

The cut of the comparative study occurred in the formal organizational structures of the National Union of Educators, National Union, Ciudad del Este-Alto Paraná-Paraguay Base Committee (hereinafter UNE-SN-CDE), APP- Union of workers in education (hereinafter referred to as APP-FI) and the Union of Teachers of the Province of Misiones (hereinafter UDPM-PI), the Trade Union Department of Puerto Iguazú-Misiones-Argentina. The central question of this study was: do the formal structures of these unions reveal evidence of internationalist initiatives among workers' unions in the education of the Foz do Iguaçu-Brazil, Ciudad del Este-Paraguay and Puerto Iguazú-Argentina frontiers? What are the similarities and differences in the formal organizational structures of these unions? The initial understanding is that these unions had in common the territorial proximity, given by the Brazil-Paraguay-Argentina border. We chose as method of research the Historical Dialectical Materialism, the general categories that guided the study were praxis, totality and contradiction. We analyze the categories of content: nationalism, proletarian internationalism, I, II, III and IV editions of the International Workers' Association (1st chapter), the Brazilian scientific production on proletarian internationalism, currently (2nd chapter). Through the methodological resources of interviewing and documentary analysis, we performed the comparative analysis of oral histories, formal organization structures and union documents UNE-SN-CDE, APP-FI and UDPM-PI evidencing the internationalist articulations found (3rd chapter). The results of the study show that there are few, occasional, individualized, discontinuous and sparse internationalist articulation initiatives, materialized in the form of meetings, meetings and participation in seminars and congresses.

Amanda Pacini de Moura 15 September 2015 (has links)
This research investigates the relationship between documentation and internationalism in Paul Otlet\'s (1868-1944) thought, focusing specifically in how internationalism informs the problematics and solutions surrounding the document. The methods employed were bibliographic and documentary survey, review and analysis of a corpus of Otlet\'s texts, as well as texts form his interpreters. It observes the centrality of the First World War in Otlet\'s reasoning concerning the workings of social life, and the descriptive models based on biology, industrial physics and chemistry, and rationalism through which he understood social dynamics. It exposes his diagnosis of a crisis of social growth and adaptation to internationalization - the insufficiency of the Nation-State, the proliferation of international associations, the need for a Society of Nations -, and it establishes how internationalism manifests in his thought both as a fact and as a political position. It discusses Otlet\'s understanding of documentation as a sociotechnical phenomenon, following how its construction supports and is supported by an evolutionary view of man and society. It observes how he employs the images of matter and force to describe the effect of documentation on human thought, pointing out the document as the material condition for the possibilities of sustained communication, the development of objective knowledge and ultimately social cohesion. It demonstrates how in the years between the World Wars Otlet aimed to establish institutionally the connection between documentation and internationalism, both by conceiving a new organizational structure, the Palais mondial (later Mundaneum), and by arguing for the League of Nations\' recognition of the social demands for international intellectual cooperation. It exposes how Otlet connected thus the development of social consensus and the possibility of democratic action to the development of knowledge and the organization of documents. Finally, it points out the interdependence between documentation and internationalism in Otlet\'s thought as an example of the need to consider the political and social elements underlying theoretical and technical conceptions in Information Science.

Universalism as Utopia: A Historical Study of the Schemes and Schemas of Paul Otlet (1868-1944)

Van Acker, Wouter 07 November 2011 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation is an intellectual biography which discusses the projects and utopian visions of Paul Otlet (1868-1944). Paul Otlet formulated the concept of ‘documentation’, a field incorporating both study and practice that evolved out of bibliography before developing into information science. He was also a sociologist, an internationalist and indefatigable promoter of his conception of ‘universalism’ or ‘mondialism’, and of the Mundaneum and the Cité Mondiale. The major source that is used to throw new light on Otlet as a utopian thinker is an impressive collection of thousands of unpublished schemas. By means of an historical analysis of his schemas and writings, this thesis aims to identify the fundamental universalistic character of his utopian vision of knowledge organization and international organization. Universalism was a phenomenon incorporating complex personal ideals and social objectives, assuming different meanings in the fields of science, culture and politics, and reflecting the historical circumstances and undertakings of the time. By exploring how Paul Otlet and others dealt with the issue, this dissertation aims to contribute to the history of the idea of ‘universalism’. / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Emerging markets multinational enterprises : internationalisation of South African chemical companies into the rest of Africa

Luxomo, Nomvula January 2014 (has links)
The internationalisation of multinationals from emerging markets has increased remarkably over the last two decades which has caused a fundamental shift in the global economy whereby more focus is now being directed to the foreign expansion strategies pursued by these firms. There is a growing debate amongst IB scholars about the applicability of existing theories and frameworks in explaining the rise of emerging market multinationals. The objective of this research was to explore internationalisation strategies of multinationals from emerging countries to provide more insights and understanding into the foreign expansion approaches employed by these multinational companies (MNCs) when investing in other emerging economies with the focus on foreign expansion of South African chemical companies into the rest of Africa. A qualitative exploratory study was followed where 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior managers and executives across four South African chemical companies. The findings indicate how the rising competition in the domestic market due to the introduction of international competition and the increase of local market competitors led to the successful internationalisation of South African companies from the chemical. The study also shows that chemical companies from South Africa adopt a gradual internationalisation approach when expanding into the rest of Africa and these companies based their foreign expansion on firm-specific advantages that were shaped by the unique history South Africa. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / zkgibs2015 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / Unrestricted

Effect of institutions on multinational corporation internationalisation strategies across base-of-the-pyramid markets in Africa

Samuel, Tessa-Marie January 2014 (has links)
In and amongst the institutional chaos of Africa lies a wealth of business potential for multinational corporations (MNCs) worthy of entry. This research study investigated the effect of political, regulatory and societal norm aspects of institutions on internationalising MNC, base-of-the-pyramid (BoP), strategies across various emerging economies in Africa. Although there is an abundance of literature on the BoP markets in emerging economies, literature is limited on the construct of strategy internationalisation across African countries through the institutional lens. A qualitative research methodology was used for this study to understand the institutional variables. Individual depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight managers having cumulative experience across ten MNCs. The focus of the study was on the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. However, to give the data variance five of the interviewees were employed in the FMCG industry while the others were employed in the consumer electronics, pulp and paper, and mobile telecommunications industries. The research data were analysed using an inductive approach to explore the themes discovered. These themes were: political ties and history, consumer insight, and information and communication technology (ICT). This study confirmed the importance of institutional aspects on BoP strategy internationalisation in Africa. Also, the study discovered a new and remarkable finding that acknowledges the BoP as non-traditional MNC shareholders rather than viewing the market as consumers or business partners alone. This progressive understanding of the BoP will encourage close, long-term interaction and mutualistic relationships, and foster shared commitment through embeddedness, as well as increase market penetration through creative channels and inclusive networks. From the findings above, a functional framework was developed for MNCs exploring the BoP space in Africa. The framework builds upon and advances the BoP 2.0 protocol developed by Stuart Hart, and will enable MNCs to anticipate challenges and risks associated with BoP markets in Africa. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / lmgibs2015 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / Unrestricted
