Woven modularity : exploring playful expressions in textile designSvensson, Mikaela January 2020 (has links)
This degree work is a project that started out from weaving, which became the founding technique for how a modular textile took its shape, woven together as interlaced parts. Modularity was taken into this work in order to avoid a flat result and give the woven textile playful attributes and multiple functions. By using bold colours and layers in weaving, an investigation of the interactive and playful side of this textile technique was done. The method was based on workshops where geometrical forms were systematically woven into a repetitive pattern according to the plain weave binding. The result were three voluminous textiles with a given hierarchy of colours and material as they were placed at different levels. Practically, it is a textile that can be fitted to different spaces by being either diminished or built out, in order to be interactive. The quantity of elements within the textiles became the essence and the quality in the project and the advantage is that it is a textile that can be made from waste.

We discuss efficient Bayesian estimation of dynamic covariance matrices in multivariate time series through a factor stochastic volatility model. In particular, we propose two interweaving strategies (Yu and Meng, Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, 20(3), 531-570, 2011) to substantially accelerate convergence and mixing of standard MCMC approaches. Similar to marginal data augmentation techniques, the proposed acceleration procedures exploit non-identifiability issues which frequently arise in factor models. Our new interweaving strategies are easy to implement and come at almost no extra computational cost; nevertheless, they can boost estimation efficiency by several orders of magnitude as is shown in extensive simulation studies. To conclude, the application of our algorithm to a 26-dimensional exchange rate data set illustrates the superior performance of the new approach for real-world data. / Series: Research Report Series / Department of Statistics and Mathematics

Designing Situated Capability Viewpoints : Adapting the general concept of capability to work practicesTell, Anders W. January 2018 (has links)
Capability is a long-established term and concept that has found its way to be used to describe organisations. It provides the basis for a genre of analysis, design and planning methods used in several fields. In enterprise architecture frameworks, capability has become a central architectural and fundamental element. In the field of strategic management, it was used in the 1990s to describe the resources and core competencies that a company needs in order to compete in a market, while in military applications, the concept of capability is used for mission planning. It has also been suggested that the design of information systems could be based on the concept of capability. There is no broad agreement on the nature of capability in the enterprise architecture, strategy, planning and engineering literature. This may lead to problems, as differences in perception and use in and across work practices may hamper the utility of the concept of capability in practical approaches encompassing many different kinds of stakeholders, perspectives and work practices. The overall research goal of this thesis is to design a general concept of capability, a capability viewpoint and a capability situating method that can be used to adapt the concept of capability for use within enterprise architecture frameworks, to support different work practices, and at the same time to support coherence between work practices. The research methodology used in this thesis is based on the design science paradigm, which has the primary aim of creating innovative artifacts and new knowledge to solve general and practical problems. The thesis contributes to a deepened understanding of the varying uses and utility of the concept of capability in different work practices, through an empirical case study of a mega-scale programme. This work also presents three novel artifacts, a general capability pattern, a base capability viewpoint and a capability situating method, which can be used to increase the relevance, use and utility of the concept of capability in the different types of work people do themselves and together with others in organisations. The method provides a way to adapt and tailor the concept of capability to existing enterprise architecture frameworks and to different work practices, in order to lower the barriers of application, and to improve the facilitating conditions for and actual use of capability analysis, design and planning. The results contribute to the field of enterprise architecture by enabling the creation of ISO 42010 compliant situated capability viewpoints through the application of this method.

Influence of Consolidation and Interweaving on Compression Behavior of IsoTruss™ StructuresHansen, Steven Matthew 09 March 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Composite IsoTruss™ structures incorporate intersecting longitudinal and helical members. At the intersections, the fiber tows can be interwoven to achieve mechanical interlocking for increased joint integrity. Interlocking introduces gaps and curvilinear fiber paths similar to the crossovers in filament-wound structures, potentially facilitating local delamination within the members, thus reducing the strength and/or damage tolerance of the structure. Optimizing the interlocking pattern at the joints along with efficient consolidation minimizes these effects.
Joint specimens were fabricated using a specially designed machine. Specific tow intersection patterns at the joint were: 1) Completely encapsulating the longitudinal member with the tows of the helical member; and 2) Interweaving the tows of the helical member with the tows of the longitudinal member. Consolidation was accomplished using: 1) a braided sleeve; 2) a coiled sleeve; 3) a sparse spiral Kevlar® wrap; 4) a polyester shrink tape sleeve; 5) twisting the entire bundle of longitudinal fiber tows; and 6) cinching the joints using aramid fiber.
Ultimate compression strength and stiffness is directly related to the straightness of the tows in the longitudinal members at the intersections. An encapsulated joint reduces member strength by only 4.6%; whereas, an interwoven joint reduces member strength by 30.5%. The fiber paths of the longitudinal member in encapsulated joints are straighter than in interwoven joints, resulting in an average strength difference of 26.2%.
Physical properties, strength, and stiffness show that consolidation quality directly affects performance. Consolidation using sleeves provides high quality consolidation, high strength, and high stiffness. Encapsulated joints consolidated using sleeves have an average ultimate strength and Young's modulus 34% and 21% higher, respectively, than encapsulated joints consolidated using other methods. Interwoven joints consolidated using sleeves have an average ultimate strength and Young's modulus 28% and 19% higher, respectively, than interwoven joints consolidated using other methods. Consolidating specimens using a braided sleeve yields the highest quality based on consistency, strength, and stiffness. Consolidating specimens by twisting the longitudinal member yields the lowest strength and stiffness. These conclusions will be applied to IsoTrussâ„¢ grid structure design and manufacturing technology.

Consolidation and Interweaving of Composite Members by a Continuous Manufacturing ProcessKesler, Sarita L. 27 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Recent research and development has resulted in a working prototype of an automated process for manufacturing IsoTruss® and other innovative open lattice composite structures which yields faster, and more predictable and consistent parts, while automatically consolidating individual members. This machine is sufficiently versatile to manufacture any type of open lattice structure fabricated from filamentary composite materials. The objectives of the research in this thesis were two-fold: (1) to validate this new process for making IsoTruss structures; and (2) to measure the compression strength and stiffness of specimens produced on the machine. In order to accomplish the first purpose, various parts were manufactured on this prototype machine, including: a six-node IsoTruss structure with single outer longitudinal members, a three-longitudinal member section of an inner longitudinal IsoTruss structure with consolidated members, and a two-bay IsoTruss panel structure. By creating and running patterns to make these parts, the hypothesis that the machine will make any geometry of IsoTruss structure was validated. The second objective of this research was accomplished by testing the compression strength and stiffness of specimens manufactured with this automated process. Buckling versus compression failure of members was examined by varying member aspect ratios. The effect of intersecting helical members was also explored, as was the effect of changing the number of braiding bobbins used to consolidate members. Testing showed that increasing the number of braiders increases consistency of the braided sleeves and reduces scatter in the results. The ratio of helical to longitudinal tows at a joint is directly related to the percent decrease in member strength at the joint. Compression failure of individual members is the preferred method of failure, because this type of failure absorbs significantly more energy. This research proves that the manufacturing process will produce even the most complex IsoTruss geometries, with the necessary consolidation of individual members. Findings also indicate that a few modifications -- such as improved bobbins, more reliable switches, more accurate pulling system, etc. -- will enable this automated process to produce composite lattice structures with superior mechanical properties.

La production urbaine dans le cas d'Alger : Quid du "Projet urbain" ? / Urban production in the case of Algiers : Looking for the Urban Design.Bouragba, Djamel Eddine 14 October 2016 (has links)
Le présent travail de recherche aborde la question du projet urbain appliqué dans le cas de la métropole algéroise. Dans cette ville des chantiers de grande ampleur ont été engagés: réseaux routiers et autoroutiers, grands équipements, réseaux de transport, etc. La démarche globale y a été formalisée dans le Plan Stratégique Alger 2030. Ce plan, dans les choix qu’il propose, réfère à de nombreuses expériences. Les éléments d’exécution du plan ne montrent cependant pas la prise en compte réelle de l’esprit de ces expériences. En situation d’incertitude quant à une mise en œuvre effective de projet, nous avons questionné le Plan Stratégique pour vérifier dans quelle mesure il mettait en acte les principes auxquels il réfère dans le discours. L’analyse a montré que ce plan est réduit dans les faits et les pratiques à une fonction de dessin en déficit de dessein. Ce Plan Stratégique semble éloigné de l’esprit du projet urbain : un plan qui ne s’appuie pas sur la connaissance et l’analyse du réel urbain, ni sur l’examen ou l’exploration de scénarii, ni sur ce que pourraient apporter les démarches de concertation et de débat, soit, de tout ce qui fait le projet urbain. / The present research addresses the issue of Urban Design applied to the case of Algiers metropolis. In this city, large-scale projects have been undertaken during the last decade : highway infrastructure, major equipements, urban and suburban transport networks, etc. The overall approach has been formalized in the Algiers 2030 Strategic Plan. The choices that this plan offers, are drawn from many experiences. Nevertheless, the delivery elements of the plan do not reflect the spirit of the experiences refered to. In a situation of uncertainty regarding the real execution of the project, we have examined the Strategic Plan to check how to put into practice the principles contained in its discourse. The analysis showed that the plan is reduced in practice to a plan drawing function without a purpose, an aim or a vision. This Strategic Plan seems far from the Urban Design approach : a plan that does not rely on a knowledge and an analysis of urban reality, the examination and the exploration of possible futur outcomes, nor what a consultation process and debate could bring, that is to say, all of which makes the Urban Design.
