A Phenomenological Case Study of a Principal Leadership: The Influence of Mr. Clark's Leadership on Students, Teachers and Administrators at Eastside High School

Miller, Olandha Pinky 11 August 2011 (has links)
Joe Louis Clark was the principal of Eastside High School (EHS) located in Paterson, New Jersey from 1982 to 1989. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore Mr. Clark’s leadership style as principal of EHS, and to investigate from the point of view of Mr. Clark’s former students, teachers, and administrators what, if any effect, his leadership style had at EHS, as well as on his students, teachers, and administrators’ lives during and subsequent to their time at EHS. I conducted this investigation by giving voice to my classmates, teachers, administrators and myself. I graduated from EHS during Mr. Clark’s tenure and I am a member of his first graduating class in 1986. When Mr. Clark arrived as principal, EHS was characterized by large numbers of students living at or below the poverty line, overcrowded classrooms, and outdated resources. Additionally, there were issues such as: high dropout rates, drugs, teenage pregnancy, violence towards students and teachers. In an attempt to raise the students’ Minimum Basic Skills Test scores and eliminate the violence at EHS, Mr. Clark was hired as the principal. Through face-to-face and telephone semi-structured, open ended in-depth interviews with twenty-two participants, I uncovered personal views of Mr. Clark’s leadership style. Mr. Clark used a leadership style that was characterized by the informants as autocratic, directive, charismatic and caring. The voices of his students, teachers, and administrators speak volumes about the strategies he developed that made an impact on their lives in addition to reforming EHS.

Performing Taboo: The Creation of an Aesthetic through the Exploration of Censorship in Theatre and the Challenges of Directing Killer Joe

Zimmerman, David Todd 30 November 2012 (has links)
This document explores the performance of taboo on the stage. The exploration is focused around the establishment of my personal aesthetic, which was developed through my studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Starting with my first trip to Broadway, my journey goes through the class work that I did at VCU and the two plays that I did on the Shafer Street Alliance Laboratory Theatre stage: my performance and use of latex costumes in Funnyhouse of a Negro, and my direction and the troubles with producing Killer Joe. The exploration concludes with a look at the theatre in parts of Virginia and the ability to pursue an acting career with an aesthetic that pushes boundaries.

[en] BLOOD, GUTS, CHARACTERS AND MOVIE: A GLANCE AT JOSÉ MOJICA MARINS TERROR / [pt] SANGUE, TRIPAS, LETRAS E PELÍCULA: UM OLHAR SOBRE O TERROR EM JOSÉ MOJICA MARINS

ANNA CAROLINA CABRAL DE ANDRADE DA MATTA MACHADO 05 December 2003 (has links)
[en] This dissertation reads the horror in the film maker s José Mojica Marins work. The unstable condition and the uncommon career of this dammed film maker in the history of the Brazilian movie industry passes as a compulsory evanescence logic, where the director was forced to explore new fields: text, television, radio and, more recently, the Internet, in order to keep on insisting/investing in the arduous task of making scripts, producing and releasing his more than 30 films. The intention is to understand why his history happened this way. What similarities and differences does it keep with the classics? To what extent can he be considered as a descendent of the French theatre of the Grand Guignol? Much more than analyse narrow concepts about the fantastic literature approaching fictions ingredients, the idea is to make an analysis of the horror in its contemporary and cultural aspects relating it to the director s biography.

[en] VAR EVALUATION OF EMERGING AND DEVELOPED MARKETS VIA DYNAMIC COPULA MODELS / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE VAR DE MERCADOS EMERGENTES E DESENVOLVIDOS VIA MODELOS DE CÓPULAS DINÂMICAS

FLAVIO LUCIO DE OLIVEIRA COELHO 30 August 2013 (has links)
[en] The aim of this dissertation is to analyze how the subprime crisis impacted the dependence structure among the emerging and developed markets by using the MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) market index as proxy for each of these markets. The proposed methodology is based on the construction of bivariate distributions via conditional copulas. The marginal distribution for each of the indexes makes use of univariate GARCH models and model dependence is captured via the following copulas: normal, normal GAS (Generalised Autoregressive Score) and Joe-Clayton symmetric considering both fixed parameters (static framework) and time varying parameters (dynamic framework). Our results show that the normal GAS copula with structural break was the most adequate to capture dependence between the returns of emerging and developed markets. Throughout the proposed framework it was possible to infer that correlation and tail dependence measures between these markets sharply increased during the subprime crisis. Finally VaR (Value at Risk) coverage was used as goodness of fit measure, and on this metric the normal GAS copula has also outperformed the others.

Pilon, Guillaume January 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Presidential Manifestation of Verbal Dominance : A discourse analysis of conversational dominance strategies employed by Joe Biden and Donald Trump

Alafifi, Markus January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to observe linguistic disparities in the distribution of the conversational dominance strategies interruptions, amount of talk, and questions in the first U.S. 2020 presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Subsequently, these findings establish the evaluation of how the interactive phenomena relate to the masculinity conceptualizations of hegemonic masculinity and subordination. To examine the study objective, the methodology conducted was a discourse analysis of the debate transcript. Hence, the method intended to measure to which extent Biden and Trump employed interruptions, amount of talk, and questions during the debate. The outcome of the review established the discursive dominance framework used to discuss how the presidential candidates demonstrated adherence to diverse masculinities’ conceptualizations. The discourse analysis outcome revealed an asymmetrical distribution of the interactive phenomena across all variables measured in favor of Donald Trump. These results suggest that Trump’s discursive performance signaled adherence to hegemonic masculinity norms to a greater extent than Biden through employing more conversational dominance strategies during the debate. Consequently, Biden’s discursive performance indicated closer relations to masculine subordination than Trump’s performance.

“The United States stands with the people of Israel.” : A Political Discourse Analysis of Joe Biden's Posts from the Platform X

Lundberg, Felicia January 2024 (has links)
Through recent years social media has become a useful platform for politicians to share their political ideologies with their followers. An example of such a platform is X(formerly Twitter) where politicians regularly post statements for their followers. Donald Trump, the former American president, particularly stands out for his memorable “fake news” statements. Numerous studies have been done on the correlation between X and political discourse. This study will further this research by looking at the political discourse of American President Joe Biden on his official X account, @POTUS. This study will look at posts from Joe Biden regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The study aims to gain a better understanding of how Biden represents himself and The United States through his discourse. The analytical tools for this analysis will be speech acts per the Speech Act Theory, as defined by John Searle and George Yule, and personal deixis. 116 posts were saved from Biden ́s account, where 73 posts containing only text were chosen for analysis. The results from the analysis showed a tendency to use assertive, commissive, and expressive strategies and a high frequency in personal deixis wherein the pronouns “I” and “we” were used the most. The results showed that Biden ́s discourse helped represent himself and The United States as proactive, empathetic, and engaged actors in the war. Biden conveyed a strong stance in support of Israel while also expressing concern for Palestinian civilians.
