Unga vuxnas åsikter kring bokomslags formgivning : En enkät- och fokusgruppsundersökning / Young adults’ perceptions of book cover designs : A questionnaire and focus group survey

Beillon, Nathalie, Runeby, Fanny January 2012 (has links)
The reader’s first encounter with a book is through its cover. Therefore it is important that the cover is appealing and sends out the right message. According to book publishers, young adults (individuals aged 16–27 years) are hard to reach because of a lack of knowledge about what attracts them and because of the group’s diversity. The objective of this study is to show what young adults are attracted by in book cover designs, using an extensive questionnaire survey and two focus groups investigating their perceptions. The results show that young adults argue that a book cover must relate to the potential reader and corresponds to the reader’s identity. The typography should be easy to read. Photographic images are preferred and should depict the contents of the book. Unsaturated colors appeal to the target group – red and black seem to be the most popular colors, while pink is not preferred. Special effects (like varnish and foil) should be used with caution.

Seismic Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Columns

Liu, James 08 August 2013 (has links)
Appropriate transverse confinement can significantly improve strength, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete columns, therefore enhancing their seismic resistance. This study is conducted to evaluate the seismic behaviour of concrete columns transversely confined by steel spirals, ties or fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping. In the experimental program of this study, fifteen circular concrete columns of 356 mm (14 in.) diameter and 1473 mm (58 in.) length were tested under lateral cyclic displacement excursions while simultaneously subjected to constant axial load thus simulating earthquake loads. Eight columns were solely confined by various amounts of steel spirals, while seven other columns containing only minimal steel spirals were retrofitted by external FRP wrapping. Test results revealed that the increased transverse confinement can improve the energy dissipation capacity, ductility, deformability and flexural strength of concrete columns. The required transverse confinement should also be enhanced with the increase of axial load level to satisfy certain seismic design criterion. A computation program was developed to conduct monotonic pushover analysis for confined concrete columns, which can predict the envelope curves of moment vs. curvature and shear vs. deflection hysteresis loops with reasonable accuracy for columns subjected to simulated seismic loading. Based on extensive numerical analysis, expressions were developed for the relationships between the amount of transverse confinement and different ductility parameters, as well as the strength enhancement of confined columns. Finally, design procedures to determine the amount of transverse confinement were developed for concrete columns to achieve a certain ductility target. The enhancement of flexural strength of columns due to transverse confinement was also evaluated.

Termoisolation : Ett utredande arbete för Didriksons

Carlsson, Jonna January 2018 (has links)
This study is a thesis during the last semester of three years at the SportsTechnology program at the Mid Sweden University in Östersund. Theaim of the study is to give the swedish clothing brand Didriksons ananswer to the question of which padding used in their production thathas the best thermal insulation properties and which factors that mayhave an impact on it. The goal for this study is to present a satisfactoryresult for Didriksons from all the executed tests combined which laterhopefully will help them within their product development. To answerthat question, nine equal jackets with different isolation materials andways of construction have been tested in various laboratories such as thecold chamber at National Wintersport Centre and the wind tunnel atSports Tech Research Centre all within the Mid Sweden University. Thetests have not been according to any ISO-standards or such, but hasbeen produced by the student together with Didriksons and researcherswith expertise within the subject at the university. Studies showed thatthe jacket with the best thermal isolation property was the onefabricated with synthetic down. The study also showed that so calledcold spots, stiches, zippers and so on, may affect the padding whichresults in a big negative impact to the thermal isolation, especially whenthe garment is exposed to wind. Jackets with the same type of paddingbut different amounts of cold spots have delivered the best and theworst results during the tests. The different paddings have also beeninvestigated in laboratories to see how they withstand wind and toanalyze their micro structure. All this to get a better understanding ofthe materials and its various properties.
