This work examines the nature of frames that restrict our perspectives and thus give birth to such sociological entities like societies, communities and nations. How is the dualism of &ldquo / inside-outside&rdquo / created on sociological and psychic levels? More importantly, what instruments play what kind of roles in the creation of that dualism? Examining the formation of Ottoman subjectivity as a case, this study gives original answers to these questions. The psychoanalytic theory, which opened a new methodological domain for the social sciences in the past century, productively accommodated a good amount of works on these questions. Sigmund Freud&rsquo / s pioneering works on the dynamics of human psyche and Jacques Lacan&rsquo / s theories of human subjectivity played important roles in the improvement of this domain. Beginning from the second half of the past century, discussions on identity and belonging, as well as such furious social questions as nationalism, racism and xenophobia, have been held in the light of the new approaches of psychoanalytic theories in the field of social sciences. In this sense, this study can be seen as a part of those approaches, because methodologically, it bases itself on the opportunities offered by a particular psychoanalytic theory, namely, that of a French psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan. I pick up two of Lacan&rsquo / s productively scrutinized concepts, namely the &ldquo / real&rdquo / and the &ldquo / imaginary&rdquo / , to develop a particular perspective towards this question: How is the dualism of inside-outside created in different contexts throughout the Ottoman history, so that this dualism could give birth to Ottoman subjectivity? Taking the two Lacanian concepts as a base, I analyze the instruments that play the role of &ldquo / thresholds&rdquo / in the formation of the dualism of &ldquo / inside-outside&rdquo / , under two general headings: The &ldquo / real thresholds&rdquo / and the &ldquo / imaginary thresholds&rdquo / . To put in a very brief manner, a &ldquo / real threshold&rdquo / is born out of any material obstacle that puts restrictions of any kind to the abilities of human body (natural obstacles like mountains, rivers and oceans, as well as designed obstacles like any object of war architecture, for instance, fall into this heading). Imaginary thresholds, on the other hand, are the &ldquo / images of selves&rdquo / that reflect back to us on the social ground, just in the same manner as our mirror-images come back to us and provide us with a subjective feeling of self (like the diplomatic texts and the mythologies). Although I borrow the two Lacanian terms (i.e. real and imaginary) to build up a theory of thresholds, I do not hesitate to bend and reshape those concepts whenever necessary, to build the conceptual tools into a rather ergonomic manner.

Dans le contexte d'une société américaine où la religion occupe une place primordiale, une approche lacanienne des romans de Tom Robbins s'avère particulièrement utile pour dégager les thèmes directeurs de ses œuvres : le messianisme, le mysticisme et le monothéisme. Non seulement ces manifestations religieuses jouent un rôle central dans son œuvre romanesque, mais elles servent aussi à mieux exploiter les outils psychanalytiques développés par Jacques Lacan, et en particulier le Symbolique, l'Imaginaire et le Réel. Comment le RSI peut-il éclaircir le débat religieux dans les œuvres de Tom Robbins ou dans d'autres œuvres postmodernes ? Cette étude multidisciplinaire répond à cette problématique en se portant sur trois axes principaux. Premièrement, l'envergure de la messianité dans la société américaine donne lieu au phénomène littéraire que nous appelons " le sujet messianique ", se caractérisant par son ancrage topologique dans le Symbolique lacanien. Ensuite, la prévalence d'une approche mystique de la spiritualité dans les œuvres robbinsiennes s'exprime par une relation mystique entre un être divin d'une part, et le croyant d'autre part - rapport symbiotique propre à l'instance Imaginaire. Enfin, le Réel lacanien met en exergue l'impossibilité de la réconciliation structurale entre ces deux instances en explorant le thème du monothéisme dans les œuvres de Tom Robbins. A criança autora de ato infracional - as medidas de proteção e o Conselho Tutelar - um debate para o campo psicanalítico. Dissertação de Mestrado, Instituto de Psicologia, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo. Este trabalho tem como objetivo abordar a temática da criança autora de ato infracional e a aplicação das medidas de proteção pelos Conselhos Tutelares de São Paulo-SP e, com isso, trazer contribuições para a aplicação destas medidas. Para que se possa apreender o contexto atual de sua aplicação, do surgimento dos Conselhos Tutelares e da situação da criança autora de ato infracional, faz-se um levantamento histórico sobre o assunto. Em seguida, apresenta um levantamento teórico, dentro do panorama jurídico, sobre os conceitos de ato infracional e as medidas socioeducativas e de proteção aplicadas pela justiça e pelo Conselho Tutelar, respectivamente, nestes casos. A pesquisa qualitativa de campo é o cerne deste trabalho. A escuta dos conselheiros tutelares, tendo como objetivo conhecer suas experiências no atendimento e encaminhamento destes casos, articula-se a uma série de problemáticas como a atribuição ou não de ato infracional praticado por criança, o entendimento das medidas de proteção como garantistas ou restritivas de direitos e a questão da competência nestas situações. Para concluir a primeira parte do trabalho, estas questões são desenvolvidas, onde se extrai a hipótese da pesquisa: qual o lugar da criança autora de ato infracional sob medidas de proteção?. Por meio deste questionamento, conjectura tratar-se da criança que está entre a garantia e a restrição de direitos, em que se forja a noção do fora-do-lugar. Encaminha-se uma articulação conceitual acerca dos lugares de discurso em psicanálise, elucida os lugares da criança enquanto sujeito nos quatro discursos propostos por Jacques Lacan e a concepção de infantil. Por fim, aborda a criança autora de ato infracional sob medidas de proteção por meio dos argumentos teóricos do discurso do capitalista e da noção de lei simbólica em psicanálise / This paper aims at discussing the matter of child offender and the application of protective measures by child protection authorities in São Paulo-SP and, with that, aims to bring contributions for the implementation of these measures. To apprehend the current context of these measures, the emergence of child protection authorities and child offenders situation, makes a historical survey on the subject. Further, it presents a theoretical research within legal landscape on the concepts of act of infraction, socioeducational measures and protection applied by justice and child protection authorities, respectively, in these cases. Qualitative research field is the core of this work. Listening child protective authorities, aiming to understand their experiences in care and management on these cases, articulates a number of questions such as attribution or not of act of infraction committed by children, the understanding of protection measures as guarantees or restriction of the rights and the matter of competence in these situations. To conclude the first part of the work, these questions are developed, in which it extracts the research hypothesis: what is the place of child offender under protective measures?. Through this questioning, conjecture that it is the child who is between the guarantee and the restriction of rights, which forges the notion of \"out-of-place\". Forward to a conceptual articulation about places of discourse in psychoanalysis, clarifies childs places as a subject in the four discourses proposed by Jacques Lacan and the child conception. Finally, discusses child offender under protective measures through the theoretical arguments of the capitalist discourse and the notion of symbolic law in psychoanalysis

The first aim of the thesis is to demonstrate the structural congruence between the discourse theory, as is formulated in the work of political philospoher Ernesto Laclau, and the Lacanian psychoanalytical discouse. Moreover, we claim that any potential attempt to remove or omit the theoretical connection with Lacanian thinking from Laclauan work is illegitimate and thwart a coherence of this work. Through this demonstration we want to reach our second aim, which is to reconstruct a theory of discourse and ideology in particular which can consistently draw upon theories of both Jacques Lacan and Ernesto Laclau. To reinforce our argumentation in context of this second aim, it turned out to be very fruitful to introduce another contemporary thinker, Slavoj Žižek, to our theoretical exposition. Joining these two aims made possible a delineation of post-structurally and at the same time psychoanalytically oriented critical political theory of ideology and society.

This is an essay about the swedish modernist writer and poet Gösta Oswald’s novel En privatmans vedermödor. The essay focuses on the question about how he uses the modernist language to portray the subject and main character Mr O. Oswald’s novel and his portrayal of the subject is compared and contrasted to earlier ideas about the subject in the modernist and pessimistic traditions presented by philosophers, e g Friedrich Nietzsche. Oswald’s literary style and ideas are also compared to his contemporary modernist writers, for instance Stig Dagerman. Through a psychoanalytical reading of Oswald’s novel using mostly Jacques Lacan’s theories about language the essay argues that it is a story about the nothingness of the subject. How to Factor Loss is a collection of poems and translations prefaced by a critical paper over Robert Hass's “Meditation at Lagunitas.” The preface, “A Sensuous Theory, A Sensuous Poem,” explores how Hass merges the discourses of theory and poetry to create a poem that hangs suspended between a confidence and an anxiety about language. The poems in this thesis are primarily responses to finitude. The first section turns toward an “other” as a strategy of placating desire and of reaching both inward and outward. The second section explores the potential failures of art as a means of touching objects. The final section acknowledges that finitude is the condition of humankind, and it turns toward a more tender language, one that embraces limitations and is filled with something like faith. The collection is followed by an appendix which contains translations of several poems by René Guy Cadou and Georg Trakl.

Within the field of Disability Studies, research on cognitive and developmental disabilities is relatively rare in comparison to other types of disabilities. Using Clifford Geertz's anthropological approach, "thick description," autism can be better understood by placing both fiction and non-fiction accounts of the disorder into a larger theoretical context. Applying concepts from existing works in Disability Studies to the major writings of Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Jacques Lacan, and Donna Haraway also proves to be mutually enlightening. This ethnographic approach within the context of analysis of literary texts provides a model by which representations of individuals who are cognitively or developmentally disabled can be included in the academy.

For many years, theorists have turned to popular movies and books to help interpret the difficult principles of Jacques Lacan. However, one story that has gotten very little attention is Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and its derivative body of film adaptations. Both the novella and Rouben Mamoulian’s 1931 film are a small part of an intertextual body of work which contains scenes that play out the Lacanian principles of the mirror stage and the gaze very well. Since art imitates life, an in depth exploration of the way that these scenes play out can illuminate how Lacan’s abstract theories might look in the real life formation of identity and in male/female relations.
