A Critical Engagement with the Biblical Hebrew Verbal System Theories of John Cook and Jan Joosten by Applying Aspect Prominent Theory and Relative Tense Theory to Psalms 1-41Dyck, Andrew January 2015 (has links)
Scholars have studied the Biblical Hebrew verbal system for an extended period of time. Over the last 150 years, scholarship on Biblical Hebrew grammar has been in transition. Historically, scholars observed the function of Hebrew verbs through the lens of traditional grammars. Currently, scholars are moving toward the study of Hebrew verbs through the application of complex linguistic methodologies. As a result of advancement and transition, the study of Biblical Hebrew grammar is convoluted. In 2012, John Cook and Jan Joosten each published their own understanding of the function of the Biblical Hebrew verbal system. Through the application of an aspect prominent method, Cook considers the Biblical Hebrew verbal system to primarily express aspect. Joosten approaches the Biblical Hebrew verbal system through the lens of relative tense theory and concludes that Biblical Hebrew is primarily a temporal and modal language. Each scholar establishes their interpretation of verbal function through an observation of the same texts, but each arrives at an opposing conclusion. In this thesis, I provide a review of each scholar's theory. Particular attention is given to the YIQTOL verbal form. Following an exhaustive review, I provide possible criteria that can be used to determine YIQTOL function in real instances in real texts. I take the criteria of each method and apply them to Pss 1-41 as a test case. I provide each method an opportunity to observe YIQTOL's function in Biblical Hebrew poetry. This study reveals that each method can effectively be applied to Biblical Hebrew poetry despite the fact that this genre of literature was the focus of either methodology. While each method is seen to be transferable between literary genres, I highlight instances where either theory could not explain YIQTOL's function. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Architektura ve službách Československých aerolinií. Interiéry reprezentačních cestovních kanceláří ČSA a letiště Praha-Ruzyně v 60. letech / Architekture and Czechoslovak Airlines (ČSA). Interiors of ČSA Offices and Prague Ruzyně International Airport in the SixtiesPapežová, Petra January 2017 (has links)
In the 1960s Czechoslovak Airlines (ČSA) set up offices in the countries to which they operated regular flights. ČSA branches abroad were to match high standards of other airlines premises. In those years travelling by air was still regarded a luxury. ČSA had to take these facts into consideration. The same group of architects, designers and artists who participated in the design of ČSA branch offices took also part in the outline of the new Prague Ruzyně international airport checking-in hall. This thesis aims to depict some former, now vanished, ČSA premises. In the 1990s ČSA closed down some offices abroad and the Prague Ruzyně international airport checking- in hall (now Terminal 1) was completely reconstructed. Press and other articles, archive documents, monographies as well as information provided directly by architects, designers and artists or their relatives were used in order to describe some previous ČSA publicly accessible premises and works of art that they included. On the basis of ascertained facts, it is obvious that in the 1960s ČSA offices abroad were not only to promote the good company reputation but further fulfilled a political role to create a positive picture of the Czechoslovak Republic. ČSA offices were designed by groups around Karel Filsak and Jan Šrámek. Their signatures can...

'n Vergelykende studie van twee jeugromans : Winterijs (2001) deur Peter van Gestel en Roepman (2004) deur Jan van TonderRoets, Kristel 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / This thesis is a comparative literature study of a Dutch and an Afrikaans novel that can be
read by the youth and adults alike and display similarities with regard to genre, content,
structure and theme. The novels are Winterijs (2001) by Peter van Gestel and Roepman
(2004) by Jan van Tonder. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction. In chapter 2 concepts
such as “crossover literature”, “cross publication”, “dual audience authors” and “dual
audience literature” are discussed. Chapter 3 presents an overview of the theory that
provides a conceptual framework for this study. The method of investigation that is
followed by Helma Van Lierop-Debrauwer and Neel Bastiaansen-Harks (2005) in their
study of the similarities and differences between an adolescent novel for the youth and an
adolescent novel for adults is used, as well as the theory of Victor Turner (1969) on the
concept of liminality. As it provides a useful method for approaching and analyzing the
two texts, the above mentioned theories are applied to Winterijs and Roepman in
Chapters 4 and 5, with specific reference to the representation of a male child narrator
with liminal characteristics. In chapter 6 the similarities and differences between the two
novels are pointed out and summarized. Conclusions are drawn and possibilities for
further research are presented in chapter 7.

Jazykový rozbor vybraných památek tzv. Pinvičkova sborníku / Language analysis of the selected texts of the Pinvicka collectionKlubalová, Jana January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the language analysis of the Tandarias poem published as a part of Pinvicka collection which was written in the 2nd half of 15th century by Jan Pinvicka z Domazlic. The attention is paid to the description of ortography and all language dimensions. The main aim of this thesis is to describe the language statement of the relic and evaluate the influence of the previous versions of theTandarias poem on the examined version published in Pinvicka collection. We found out that it is not possible to give an evidence that the examined poem is significantly influenced by the language usus of the 14th century when this subject was translated to Czech. But we claim that some of the language phenomena refering to older language usus can be explained with the personal language manner of author. Nevertheless the influence of the original German writing is obvious in the lexical dimension. The addressing of the writing to the bourgeoisie and other lower social classes is supported with the tendency of the language of the text to approach to the spoken form of language.

Meziválečná propaganda Československa v zahraničí: propagandistické akce Ministerstva zahraničních věcí ve Vídni / Newspapers published in Austria in the years 1918-1939 by czechoslovakian ministry of foreigen affairsLukešová, Olga January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis investigates propaganda practices of the Czechoslovakian Ministry of Foreign Affairs applied especially to the local press of Vienna during the interwar period. The aim of the thesis is to explain the reasons that made the Czechoslovakian authorities take these steps and to reconstruct the events surrounding the subsidizing of the Vernay publishing house. A part of the investigation is an analysis of the press published under this house (Der Tag, Die Stunde, Die Börse, Die Bühne, Die Sphinx and business books of Compass) - its history, political orientation, columns, journalists, characteristics, etc. The emphasis is placed on changes brought by the Czechoslovakian influence. The thesis studies activities of the journalists (not only in Vernay's newspapers) during the crucial moments of the history of the Austrian - Czechoslovakian relations (e.g. the Austro-German Customs Union of 1931) and then draws conclusions on the effectiveness the propaganda. In this regard, the aspects seen as the most problematic are especially the non-loyalty of some of the journalists, a wide awareness of the propaganda in both countries, and a choice of newspapers intended for the purpose of propaganda.
