Evangelizace v pojetí posledních papežů / The evangelization in concept of the last popes

Bouška, Jaroslav January 2016 (has links)
Evangelization is the most important mission and responsibility of the Church and the main characteristic of her very existence. The church evangelizes because it is her duty to proclaim and to testify for the Gospel. The new evangelization is necessary most of all in such places where the Christian tradition has lost its living sense of faith, where people have lost their feeling of being members of the Church, or they have retreated from Jesus Christ. This topic has proved to be very important and pressing. Since the times of the Second Vatican Council, the Popes, namely Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, have been expressing their opinions on this subject. They have been searching for new language, new ways, new forms of evangelization. This thesis aims to show that there is a noticeable development of approaches of individual pontiffs to evangelization. Keywords The new evangelization; The evangelization; John Paul II.; Benedikt XVI.; Francis; The church.

Perceptions of Duty and Motivations for Service of American Seagoing Officers During the American Revolution

Duerksen, Benjamin 2012 May 1900 (has links)
This study utilizes correspondence, memoirs, and secondary sources to explore the lives and careers of six Continental Navy captains?Esek Hopkins, Joshua Barney, John Paul Jones, Hector McNeill, Lambert Wickes, and John Barry?and reveal the motivational factors of patriotism, a desire for fame and professional advancement, and financial stability which underlay their decisions to seek commissions in the Continental Navy, and influenced their conduct while in the service. Additionally, it suggests that prewar interactions in an "Atlantic World" context influenced the ideological and personal motivations that formed the foundations for service in the Continental Navy. All three motivations played a role in each captain's career and affected their conduct in relation to their understandings of duty, but the degree to which they influenced the captains varied. Although the promise of a steady income helped motivate initial service, financial considerations played a larger role throughout Barney's and Barry's careers than they did for other captains. The desire for fame and personal prestige also affected the conduct and service of all six men, though Jones and Hopkins provide more concrete examples of its influence. Finally, experiences interacting with West Indies and Atlantic trade networks before the war likely influenced the captains' development of revolutionary principles, and their dedication to the United States. In addition to patriotism, Jones professed a devotion to universal principles of liberty and rights, and McNeill perceived the Revolution as an attempt to establish God's Kingdom of the Just. The degree to which each captain succeeded in achieving his goals, and the affect his Continental service had on employment after the Revolution, also varied significantly. Hopkins failed as the navy's commander-in-chief, but his performance did not negatively impact his social and political standing in his native Rhode Island. Unlike McNeill, Captains Barry, Barney and Jones also utilized their networks of friends and acquaintances well, helping them find prestigious and stable employment in other seagoing capacities after the war. Wickes died in 1777, but his brief service also suggests he would have achieved success had he survived.

Prolegomena to a theological theory of justice : a comparative study of Catholic and Protestant anthropological foundations for political-economic justice with special reference to Karol Wojtyla

Smith, Stephanie January 2003 (has links)
This work proposes that the foundation for justice in society begins with an understanding of personhood that begins with Christian theology. While ethical stances such as the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights are helpful in articulating the bounds of justice in society, such humanistic declarations and programs may reach an impasse if they do not incorporate the depth and complexity of human personhood revealed in Jesus Christ. I will make this argument by comparing the Christian anthropologies of two prominent advocates for social justice in the Catholic and Protestant traditions: Karol Wojytla/Pope John Paul II and Karl Barth. Parts One and Two of this thesis will examine the strong critique which both of these men offered within their own historical context toward systems which denied the vital connection between Christian theology and persons in society. These parts will outline the distinctly Christian anthropologies that each theologian proposed as a basis for social justice. The final part of this thesis will set these two anthropologies in critical interaction with one another in the key area of divergence: the ontology of human personhood and the methodological issues integral to it. While John Paul has raised critical issues which are central to social ethics and has articulated many of the complexities of human action, Karl Barth's Christological anthropology proposes an ontological construct of being which critically critiques human motivation and behaviour while also providing a social starting point for personal ethics.

[en] SUFFERING AND MEANING IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE HOMO PATIENS, BY VIKTOR FRANKL AND THE APOSTOLIC LETTER SALVIFICI DOLORIS, BY POPE JOHN PAUL II / [pt] SOFRIMENTO E SENTIDO NO MUNDO CONTEMPORÂNEO: UM DIÁLOGO ENTRE O HOMO PATIENS DE VIKTOR FRANKL E A CARTA APOSTÓLICA SALVIFICI DOLORIS, DE JOÃO PAULO II

JOSEFA ALVES DOS SANTOS 18 January 2019 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to examine the problem of suffering and the meaning of life in the contemporary world, starting from an analysis that contextualizes the understanding and the experience of suffering in the present society. We will study the book Homo Patiens, by the viennese psychiatrist Viktor E. Frankl, and the Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris by Pope John Paul II, seeking a dialogue between faith and culture, through the common points in the authors thoughts. In the face of contemporary society s proposals to suppress suffering, which often results in an existential emptiness, contempt for the weakest and distancing from God, we will search for more adequate answers about the meaning of suffering, about the value of the human person and about the relation between God and the human suffering.

L'État et l'Église en Pologne (1945-1989) : la parole libératrice de Jean-Paul II / The State and the Church in Poland (1945-1989) : John Paul II’s liberating speech

Alt, Joanna 19 June 2015 (has links)
The subject of my thesis bears on the relations between the Church and the State in Poland from the monopole beginning of the Second World War until the breakdown of 1989. It is centered on the liberating words of John Paul II. One aspect of this destruction process of the communist dictatorship, introduced and imposed by the sovietic political power in Poland, has been the influence of the Church and in particular that of the Primate of Poland, Stefan Wyszyński and of the Archbishop of Cracovia, Karol Wojtyła. The latter's visits, once he became Pope, in 1979, 1983 and 1987, are set as a triple carrier of freedom ( on an individual scale), of relieving the burden of totalitarism ( on a social scale) and of the sovietic grip (on a national scale) Wojtyła, once he became John Paul II, operated thanks to a Word which produced a sensitiv effect and exerted a real, moral and intellectual, influence on the people. For this work, I examined the concept of «performative Word» ( that is to say a Word which has the strength to act by itself), used by Wojtyła, and of its impact on the individual, on society, on the nation at large.
