Developing metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills through reflective writing promptsPlatt, Kelsey Elyse 01 May 2016 (has links)
Effective practice determines the quality of a performance and it is essential to improving a musician's overall level of playing. Studies show that experts in the field of music display superior metacognitive skills, or the ability to think about one's thinking. Metacognition is an important skill that needs to be developed in order for a student to become a self-regulated, or independent learner. Effective practice can be improved by learning and developing metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills.
An important component of self-regulated learning is reflective thinking. Reflective thinking is a mental process that contributes to deeper learning experiences, improves problem solving skills, and enhances creativity. Reflective thinking can be stimulated with writing activities. Research and theories of reflective practices informed the creation of the Reflective Writing Prompts.
The Reflective Writing Prompts stimulate reflective thinking as they teach and develop metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills to make practice more effective. Each exercise prompts the student to think and write a response to questions focused on a specific skill. These prompts are based on research in music psychology and reflective thinking, with special focus on metacognition, self-regulated learning, practice habits, and reflective journaling. The pertinent studies and theories in these areas will be examined and explained in relation to each other. With this foundational knowledge in place, the Reflective Writing Prompts will be presented. The prompts are designed to support first or second year music students in their development as independent learners who practice effectively.

History of the Forty-Second Parallel as a Political Boundary Between Utah and IdahoBergeson, Nancy 01 May 1983 (has links)
The original purpose of this paper was to discover why Cache County, Utah at one time taxed towns now located in the State of Idaho. Later, it became apparent that a history of the forty - second parallel was necessary to fully understand the reasoning used by both the Federal and local governments in setting up the political boundaries of Utah and Cache County. Therefore, it was necessary to research the records of the Federal Government, Cache County Government, the LDS Journal History, and diaries of residents of Cache and Bear Lake Valleys, as well as detailed accounts of Spanish and Mexican negotiations with the United States. I also felt it necessary to obtain copies of maps drawn in the 1800s to appreciate the geographical knowledge available at the time. Boundary decisions in the western United States appeared to be the result of compromise more often than not. The forty - second parallel boundary was originally made to appease two independent nations. Because this spirit of compromise continued in the formation of territories after the United States gained control over both sides of the line and precedent was followed more readily than logic, the boundary did not fully satisfy residents on either side of the border for many years .

Constat d'huissier de justice et le droit à la preuve / The proof by the statement of facts drawn up by a judicial officerSchreiber, Marie-Pierre 04 December 2013 (has links)
Although not listed in the civil code in conformance with the approved modes of evidences, the statement of ofacts drawn up by a judicial officer is still a reference tool in the establishment of the proof of legal facts. The flexibility of its regime, in which participates in particular the freedom devolved in the material relation, makes it a probationary process moldable, adapted to the most diverse situations. Instrument of prevention of the disputes, or of their advance settlement, the statement of facts can also allow the litigant to satisfy the procedural burden which falls to him to prove the facts to the support of its claims. In this respect, it serves undoubtedly as a means of realization of the right to evidence, settled as the right to impose to the judge an offer or a request of evidence that hold a legitimate probative interest and recently confirmed by case-law on the basis of the Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The absence of legal straightjacke locking the establishment of the statement of facts could however raise doubts about its quality. This allegation deserves to be felt with regard to the particular quality of the judicial officer. Indifferent to the sporadic regulations of the measure, he guarantees its lawful realization according to the general principles of the trial and the subjective rights third parties. The strengthening in civil maters of the probative value of the findings made by the judicial officer is as such an official confirmation of their indisputable quality.

Teaching the storied past: history in New Zealand primary schools 1900 - 1940Patrick, Rachel January 2009 (has links)
This thesis examines history teaching in New Zealand primary schools between 1900 and 1940, situating the discussion within an intertwined framework of the early twentieth-century New Education movement, and the history of Pakeha settler-colonialism. In particular, it draws attention to the ways in which the pedagogical aims of the New Education intersected with the settler goal of ‘indigenisation’: a process whereby native-born settlers in colonised lands seek to become ‘indigenous’, either by denying the presence of the genuine indigenes, or by appropriating aspects of their culture. Each chapter explores a particular set of pedagogical ideas associated with the New Education and relates it back to the broader context and ideology of settler-colonialism. It examines in turn the overarching goals of the New Education of ‘educating citizens’, within which twentieth-century educationalists sought to mobilise biography and local history to cultivate a ‘love of country’ in primary school pupils, exploring the centrality of the ‘local’ to the experience-based pedagogy of the New Education. Next, it argues that the tendency of textbook histories to depict governments – past and present – in an overwhelmingly positive light, served important ongoing colonising functions. Next it examines the influence of the Victorian ideal of ‘character’ in textbooks, particularly during the first two decades of the twentieth century, through a pedagogy centred upon the assumption that the lives of past individuals or groups could be instructive for present generations. / By the 1920s and 1930s, the normative models of behaviour represented by character had come under challenge by the more flexible notion of ‘personality’ and its associated educational aims of expression, creativity and self-realisation, aims that emerged most clearly in relation to the use of activity-based methods to teach history. The juxtaposition of textbooks and activity-based classroom methodologies in the primary school classrooms of the 1920s and 1930s brought to light some of the broader tensions which existed within the settler-colonial ideology of Pakeha New Zealanders. The longer-term impact was a generation for whom the nineteenth-century British intrusion into Maori lands and cultures from which Pakeha New Zealanders massively profited was normalised.
