A comparison of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) cultivars affected by different cultural practices in two production systems

Lalk, Geoffrey Thomas 25 November 2020 (has links)
Strawberry cultivar performance affected by various cultural practices was investigated in two production systems. The first study investigated strawberry yield, fruit quality, and production timing of eight cultivars when using black and red plastic mulches in a high tunnel production system. The high tunnel increased air temperatures and advanced strawberry fruiting by four to six weeks compared to local openield production. The second study investigated plant growth, yield, and fruit quality of 10 cultivars fertilized with organic or conventional fertilizer and irrigated once or twice daily with the same total irrigation volume in a container system. Strawberry cultivars varied in their yield and quality variables including soluble solids contents, firmness, and titratible acidity in the two production systems. Mulch color, fertilizer type, and irrigation frequency had varying effects on the growth microenvironment, fruit yield, and certain quality variables.

[en] JUNE 2013 PROTESTS IN BRAZIL: A CORPOGRAPHY OF POWER AND RESISTANCE / [pt] PROTESTOS DE JUNHO DE 2013 NO BRASIL: UMA CORPOGRAFIA DE PODER E RESISTÊNCIA

TABATHA FRONY MORGADO 17 September 2020 (has links)
[en] Broadly speaking, this thesis deals with different gazes, narratives and interpretations regarding bodies in protest in Brazil. The work is an effort to situate these corpographies through an analysis of the practices and discourses of resistance and power and their connection with the bodies circulating the June 2013 protests in Brazil. Moreover, the relations between power and resistance are informed by a Foucauldian theoretico-methodological framework and queer theory, in special the lines developed by Judith Butler. As such, this thesis has bodies (material and discursive), as the privileged analytical entry/departure point. In order to contextualize these onto-epistemological lines, racism is discussed as a historical-cultural trait that guides the interpretation of these corpographies. Racism is therefore understood as a central factor in regulating the circulation of bodies in Brazilian time and space. Finally, this thesis seeks to observe how, in a more global context, bodies have been ambivalently invested with power and resistance. Such ambivalence is analyzed through the treatment of racialization and queering practices, specifically linked to the June 2013 context in Brazil.

On the horns of a dilemma : clarity and ambivalence in oppositional writing in the wake of the uprising of 17 June 1953 in the German Democratic Republic

Harkin, Patrick P. January 2010 (has links)
A civil Uprising on 17 June 1953 in the German Democratic Republic created a dilemma for a number of writers there. On one hand, they were deeply committed to the principles of socialism, upon which their state was based and which they saw as being put in grave danger by events such as those they experienced on 17 June. On the other hand, they were fiercely critical of the practice of socialism as pursued by the governing party, whose Stalinist methods of governance they believed to be in large part responsible for the civil unrest. My thesis explores the nature of this dilemma in the case of four writers, Bertolt Brecht, Heiner Müller, Stefan Heym and Erich Loest, and their efforts to resolve it within a repressive state, whose regime vigorously suppressed all signs of criticism or dissent. These writers created major works of fiction, a cycle of poems, a drama and two novels, in which the Uprising of 17 June is the central theme. In addition, each has provided a substantial body of non-fictional texts, largely journalistic and autobiographical, in which the Uprising is extensively contextualised. In bringing together and interrelating the fictional and non-fictional work of each author into my analysis, I have been able to demonstrate that all four held and publicly expressed views that set them in opposition to the regime in the GDR.

Assessment of business risk economic capital for South Africa banks : a response to Pillar 2 of Basel II

Alie, Kaylene Jean January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (M.M. (Finance & Investment)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Wits Business School, 2016 / The study is an assessment of the current treatment of business risk, as a significant risk type for financial institutions. It includes an industry analysis of the five major banks in South Africa, as well as international banks, and how these banks currently manage business risk in the Pillar 2 supervisory process. It assesses economic capital frameworks and the importance of business risk in the risk assessment and measurement process in the global and local industry. Various methodologies have been researched to assess which statistical methods are best suited in the measurement of this risk type as well as the quantification of the capital levels required. This study has compared the available statistical methodologies currently used in the industry and concludes which is best given the issues pertaining to the modelling of business risk quantification. A statistical model has been developed to quantify business risk for a specific bank using bank specific data, using a methodology which is relatively generic and could be applied widely across all financial institutions. The model serves to illustrate the principles surrounding the quantification of business risk economic capital. / GR2018

Noleto, Rafael da Silva 09 December 2016 (has links)
This research aims to analyze the expression of sexual and gender diversity, intersected by conceptions of race, in the context of the June festivals in Belém. From ethnography produced in June competitions held on "peripheral" areas of the city and also in competitions promoted by Belém City Hall and Government of the State of Pará, it is proposed to address these contests as a moment of ritualized social congregation. It is assumed that the participation of certain subjects in this festive context (especially cisgender women, gay men, travestis and transgender people) can yield important insights about processes in which gender, race and sexuality are articulated in performance. In an approach that focuses on the analysis of the ethnographic context from the questioning of social markers of difference articulated, this research is dedicated to the understanding of how the June festivals produce gendered, racialized and sexualized people. The intention is to give intelligibility to a tense process of recognition of certain subjects in the context of a popular festive cycle produced by the State but also by peripheral cultural producers in Belém.

The third chapter intends to point out the process of incorporation of the party spread and its increasing involvement with the tourism and marketing. The development of the dissertation finds references in the sources consulted and in the reading and interpretation of the theorics of the social history, just like: Canclini (2011), Hall (2003) and Hobsbawn (2015) / Esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo o Arraiá do Zé Bagunça, que acontece desde 1982, na cidade de Bueno Brandão-MG. No. of bitstreams: 1 AndressaVieira.pdf: 4920021 bytes, checksum: d9379904c7bf0181990712677dc370b4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-11-07 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico do Maranhão (FAPEMA) / The research analyzes the political aspects of the June 2013 manifestations in São Luís city, from the recent economic crisis of 2008 context and in relation to the social classes political action and the state's role as the ruling classes interest cohesive factor. Noteworthy is the organization process, the various groups / social movements participating in the June 2013 manifestations actions and reactions, and the State's responses to these manifestations claims. This research used several research techniques, such as documentary research in original sources or "first hand" (Laws, Bills, Decrees, pronouncements of managers, parliamentarians and activist, newspapers and police reports), militants interviews and content analysis from websites that summoned the protests. The theoretical analysis was based on the categories of social movements, social struggles, state, social classes and economic crisis. I believe that economic crises are inherent to the capitalist system, therefore, the social struggles intensify, demanding the working class organize itself into groups or social movements to perform resistance protests to this adverse scenario. Thus, the recent global events and the June 2013 manifestations should be understood as social struggles expressions that are constantly updated and redefined, so that, in the analyzed events case, due to the correlation of forces, the results walked towards an ideological polarization. In São Luis city, for example, the political actions that fallowed the June Manifestations which tried to ensure a more progressive agenda, were gradually ceasing. Equally problematic was the fact that some militants from that period turned into support for conservative or reactionary social movements ideological perspective, promoted by the media propaganda, intensely active throughout the process. Thus, it is clear that this politic scenario is not purely local or national, but a process developed internationally which demonstrates that recent global and Brazilian manifestations are structural social struggles updated constantly.

Unexpected Turbulence: An Event Study of President Obama's June 29, 2011 Press Conference and Its Effect on Aircraft Manufacturers

Jiwanlal, Nathan A. 01 January 2012 (has links)
On June 29, 2011, President Barack Obama held a press conference regarding the nation's budget deficit. During the conference, President Obama mentioned corporate jet owners six times, criticizing their desire to maintain an accelerated depreciation tax break. The President's comments were met with strong criticism from aircraft manufacturers and members of the aviation community. Based on the underlying assumption that new information is rapidly incorporated into stock prices, the press conference likely had a negative impact on the stock returns of aircraft and aircraft parts manufacturers. This paper uses a financial events study to determine whether or not the press conference significantly hurt the stock prices of aircraft manufacturers.

Les Expositions Muséales du Débarquement de Normandie : essai de Muséohistoire / The Museum Exhibitions of the Landing of Normandy : try of "Muséohistoire"

Pascal, Brice 12 December 2016 (has links)
His PhD thesis focuses on the museal story construction of one the XXth century main historic event: the landing of June 6, 1944. Nowadays, Lower Normandy is a territory scattered with almost thirty museums and memorials. What is the speech about D-Day? What is it made of? On which aspects does it insist? And which ones are ignored? The storytelling of this region is compared to the newest historiography and also to exhibitions of blockbusters’ museums such as the London’s Imperial War Museum, Paris’s Army Museum and the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History of Brussels. In this approach, we'll try to determine whether a specific speech from Normandy exists or not, and we will also analyse the museums' discourses as well as to whom they are addressed.

From a historical account of the relationship between the city of São Paulo and the media, which retrieves facets of our political culture; through a conceptual overview that show forth the various individual and collective meanings of mediated communication; and through a vivid empirical research that highlights images, experiences and places of the demonstrations of June 2013, this dissertation provides a theoretical contribution that reveals the link between the individual small screens and the big screens that are the collective arena of contemporary political action. The establishment of a new public sphere is investigated from the deeds that take place through mobile information and communication technologies, namely small screens. Through these small screens, individuals set themselves into the public sphere — the big screen. Acting in the public space in this context involves being present in these screens, but this is not enough. New information and communication media, like magnets, attract individuals to certain places, which become central to action, insofar as spaces themselves can only become central and be constituted as public spaces when people effectively act within them. The selfie, the videos and the narratives of experiences occurred in public spaces during political action perpetrated through small screens are tools of political activity in which the city spaces are reinterpreted in an intimate, even though mediated, relationship with their individual users. These experiences, then, are lived collectively on the big screens, the arena of political action.
