An educational psychologist's perspective in understanding the experiences of residential youth care workers

Carstens, Alison Lee 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / As primary caregivers (such as residential youth-care workers) are the first teachers of children and spend much more time with the child than any other service provider, educational psychologists need to implement programmes that include primary caregivers in actively working with the youth in their care. This calls for educational psychologists to gain a rich understanding of the experiences of youth-care workers in order to work collaboratively in rehabilitating youth at risk within the youth’s ecosystem. The study attempts to explore the experiences of youth-care workers in residential facilities, using the ecosystemic perspective. A proposed outcome of the research is to contribute to the skills and interventions educational psychologists can use in collaborating with and supporting youth-care workers in residential facilities to rehabilitate youth who are at risk successfully. Qualitative research within the interpretive/constructivist paradigm was employed as the research design. Research was based at two residential facilities in an outlying area of Cape Town, from which four youth-care workers and two youths were drawn as a sample. The data was collected through six semi-structured interviews, observations over a 10-month period at one of the facilities, and photographs of youth-care workers and children. The review of literature and the findings of this research uncovered many experiences that appear to typify residential youth care. These experiences include the multifaceted nature of the role that youth-care workers fulfil in a residential facility; three types of emotional affect experienced by youth-care workers working in facilities; the significance of healthy youth-care worker-child relationships and the importance of these relationships in the successful rehabilitation of youth at risk; and the levels of support and training required in order to perform the task of successfully rehabilitating youth at risk in residential settings.

Female adolescents identified with emotional disturbance and adjudicated female adolescents: A comparison of self-concepts.

Christensen, Jennifer E. 05 1900 (has links)
This study addresses the academic, social, and self-image self-concepts of females ages 13-17 who are labeled emotionally and behaviorally disordered by their public school systems and are in residential treatment, and females ages 13-17 who are adjudicated, or labeled “juvenile offenders” and are involved with the juvenile justice system. The purpose of this study is to examine and compare the self-concepts of these populations of adolescent females. Research questions focus on whether or not there is a difference in the confidence scores of self-image, academic, and social self-concepts, the importance scores of self-image, academic, and social self-concepts, and the confidence composite and outcome composite scores among female adolescents according to whether or not the female is adjudicated. Results show no statistically significant differences on seven of the eight measures. On the eighth measure, a statistically significant difference was found, with the non-offenders having a higher Outcome Confidence Composite score than the offenders.

The Texas Reformatory System with Emphasis on the Gatesville School for Boys

Johnson, Samuel Maurice 01 1900 (has links)
At least one state function is handled differently in most all of the forty-eight sovereign states. This function is that of juvenile control, or the care of juvenile delinquents. The states vary a great deal in their methods of combating juvenile delinquency and in the operation of their reformatories, and most of these systems are in crying need of reform. Many are the forgotten chore of state administrators, and others are the thorn in the side of the state's political administration. The latter is the case in the state of Texas.

The purpose of the research was to analyze the penalizing route prior to those youngsters death, focusing on the practices of social and juridical technicians working in institutions responsible for these youngsters provisional internment, judicial sentence and follow-up of social-educational measures outside the institutions. The data gathering and the record analysis carried out together with the project Murialdo, the Integrated Center for the Attendance of the Juvenile Delinquent (CIAADI/SAS) and the Infancy and Juvenile Jurisdiction of the Forum of Londrina Pr., made it possible to obtain information and analyze the processes to discuss the selectivity of the juvenile penal justice, the negative figure of crime and the regularity of the penalizing discourse among agents authorized to deal with juvenile delinquents, and those who were exterminated during the period they were carrying out social-educational measures outside the institutions. The analytical issue of the research asks to what extent the adoption of juridical-political measures of juvenile control from a distance represent the continuity of official penalizing solutions, based on academic-discourse practices with the purpose of extending the mechanisms of control, life management and continuous reinforcement of the State power. Against this, the thesis intends to criticize the model of action of the juvenile control apparatus and stimulate changes of attitude that call the attention to the existence of a society without penalties and make it viable, apart from the State penal justice apparatuses, the creation of conflicts solution mechanisms which grant power to the parts directly and indirectly involved, to solve the problems where they occur / As determinações institucionais sobre os adolescentes infratores que passaram pelo complexo tutelar e assistencial de atendimento em Londrina (PR), incluindo os que foram vítimas de assassinato, constituem o objeto de estudo da tese.

A social constructionist re-conceptualisation of adolescent delinquency

Imrie, Jina 30 June 2002 (has links)
Available literature reveals that most prevalently delinquency has been viewed from a modernist perspective. However, as cybernetic epistemology increased its stronghold within the field of psychology, explanations became increasingly systemic in nature. In this study a literature review is presented which articulates these approaches. This critique is followed by a comprehensive consideration of delinquency from a social constructionist stance as an alternative to modernist and early cybernetic perspectives. Examples are provided as to possible ways in which the label "delinquency" evolves within an interpersonal context, as well as the ways in which the meaning engendered is linked to broader cultural discourses. It has been acknowledged that this does not constitute the social constructionist perspective on delinquency, but represents some challenging ideas about how delinquency is co-created between people. Implications for therapy and research are also discussed. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

The self-concept formation of juvenile delinquents

Maphila, Makaladi Lazarus 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-concept of juvenile delinquents and to compare it with the self-concept of non-delinquent adolescents. The aspects of the self and their role in self-concept formation were outlined. Psychosocial and moral development were discussed, as well as factors that affect moral development. Juvenile delinquency was studied. Poverty and lack of parental care stood out as the main causes of juvenile delinquency. The South African juvenile justice system was also investigated. The Adolescent Self-concept Scale was administered to 20 delinquent and 20 nondelinquent adolescents. The results revealed that there is a significant difference between the self-concept of juvenile delinquents and that of non-delinquents. The delinquent group was found to have a low general self-concept. In order to determine how delinquent behaviour influences the self-concept and vice versa, one respondent from the delinquent group was randomly selected and an indepth study was carried out. / Educational Studies / M.
