Political Participation Contrasted in India: A Contextual Comparison Between Kerala and Biha

Brush, Shayla January 2011 (has links)
State processes and programs are often constructed and implemented with the intention to ameliorate the lives of the inhabitants living within those borders. However, in order for citizens to benefit from these programs and processes, for example, anti-poverty programs and decentralization projects, their participation is a necessity. But societal contexts in which citizen participation occurs vary to great extents. It is important then to investigate these differences so as to further our understanding of the workings of participation. This research conducts a comparative analysis between two states in India, Kerala and Bihar, of contextual factors impacting participation. It shows that both trust in the state as well as formal education affect the level of participation of the population. This research engages with and attempts to add to the literature of participatory development by analyzing and explaining some of the impact that context has on participation of inhabitants.

Sätt krydda på undervisningen

Svalin, Matilda January 2006 (has links)

Perceptions of PCOS between women in urban and rural areas in Kerala, India

Nitin, Saritha 24 March 2023 (has links)
BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine dysfunction problems among women of the reproductive age, with a global prevalence of 4-20%, causing 430,000 associated DALYs. Initial treatment of PCOS is mainly focused on diet and exercise and, if left untreated, PCOS can lead to many complications including, but not limited to, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and endometrial cancer. In India, one out of five women are found to have PCOS with the numbers increasing with every year, according to a 2015 study done by Metropolis Healthcare. Some studies done in other parts of the country have shown that there is very limited knowledge about PCOS. Currently there is no data about the knowledge, attitudes and practices about PCOS in Kerala, India, which is an area known to have the highest rates of diabetes in India as well as an area having a high rate of infertility. PROPOSED PROJECT AND SIGNIFICANCE: This study is proposed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of PCOS among women of reproductive age (18-45 years) in urban and rural areas of Thrissur, Kerala, India. This will help in understanding if there are any barriers to treatment and highlight the best preventive measures, as well as treatment strategies in this population, that might reduce its health burden. CONCLUSION: This will be a pilot study assessing perceptions of PCOS in Kerala, India. If this study demonstrates a low understanding of PCOS as shown in other parts of India, this will provide help in understanding the reasons why the prevalences of PCOS as well as diabetes and infertility, are increasing in the state of Kerala.

Könsdiskriminering i Indien i konsekvens av son preferenser : En jämförande fallstudie om könsdiskriminering i Kerala respektive Uttar Pradesh / Gender discrimination in India in consequence of son preferences : A comparative case study on gender discrimination in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh

Nadr Ali, Tamara January 2019 (has links)
This thesis aims to study and compare gender discrimination in terms of son preferences in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh in India. It also aims to explain how son preferences appears in these states. This study uses Judith Butler’s (2007) and Yvonne Hirdman’s (2001) gender theories to explain the gender discrimination in the different states. Research shows that the son preference in India is strongly permeated in many parts of the country. This is mainly due to the deep-rooted patriarchal system that exists in India. The results show that this is particularly prominent in Uttar Pradesh than in Kerala. Previous research and the existing theories show that the strong son preferences that exists in the Indian society results in many women and young girls being discriminated. Through the gender perspective, this can be explained by the social constructions that are created in society. There are social and cultural norms and an unchanging cultural law that has been passed on for generations, where the roles of men and women in society are constructed and implemented. The social press on women, from both society and families to give birth to sons, leads to many devastating consequences and adversities for both women and young girls.

Critical edition of the Goladīpikā (Illumination of the sphere) by Parameśvara, with translation and commentaries / Édition critique de Goladīpikā (L’illumination de la sphère) par Parameśvara, avec une traduction et des résumés

Hirose, Sho 17 March 2017 (has links)
The Goladīpikā (Illumination of the sphere) is a Sanskrit treatise by Parameśvara, which is extant in two distinctly different versions. One of them has been edited with an English translation and the other has only an edition using three manuscripts. This dissertation presents a new edition of the latter version using eleven manuscripts, addinga newly found anonymous commentary. It further consists of an English translation of the base text and the commentary as well as explanatory notes. The main content of the Goladīpikā is a collection of procedures to ind the positions of celestial objects in the sky. This dissertation highlights the mathematical tools used in these procedures, notably Rules of Three, and discusses how the author Parameśvara could have grounded the steps. There is a description of an armillary sphere at the beginning of the Goladīpikā, and the dissertation also examines how this instrument could have been involved in explaining the procedures. In the course of these arguments, the dissertation also attempts to position the Goladīpikā among the corpus of Parameśvara’s text as well as in relation to other authors

To Walk Like Boys - The Limit of Gender Equality? : A Qualitative Evaluation of the Facilitator Role in The Adolescent Project Conducted by The Sakhi Resource Center in Thiruvanathapuram, the Capital of Kerala, a State in the South of India / :

Carrigan, Anna January 2011 (has links)
Abstract The Sakhi Resource Center is at the moment conducting an educational program for adolescent girls and village health care workers in the district of Trivandrum, Kerala. Gender and sexual reproductive health are taught among other things. Classes are structured in a participatory way, giving the girls the opportunity to develop and practice their leadership and organizational skills among other things. One of the aims of The Project is to increase the confidence and sense of coherence of the girls and thus raise their ability to act in an empowered way in their societies. Another is to educate and engage health care workers out in the villages. The health care workers are Facilitators in The Adolescent Project. The Facilitators are both being educated by the Project staff and then themselves educating adolescents in The Project. The purpose of my study has been to evaluate the role of The Facilitators in The Project with the focus on gender. My research method is case study, and my empirical results are based on observations and nine in-depth interviews with The Facilitators. I have also studied Project Documents. I have used gender theory and theories of empowerment along with postcolonial theories of intersectionality. The Facilitators have a key-function here as after the project they are intended to continue conducting classes in the villages. I have found for example that the motivation to become a Facilitator in the Project can often be traced back to personal experiences from adolescence. I have focused on the Facilitators’ attitudes and found a tendency for them to promote arranged marriages and set limits on gender equality. I have also focused on how the Facilitators experienced results gained from the Project, both for them themselves and for the adolescents. In the analysis I have suggested that Sakhi could put more emphasis on the student role of The Facilitator to ensure gender sensitive project running in the future.
