Le problème cartésien de l'interaction psychophysique : clés de lecture classiques et contemporaines / The cartesian problem of psychophysical interaction : classical and contemporary interpretive insights

Roux, Sandrine 08 December 2015 (has links)
It is common to trace back the origin of the “mind-body problem” to Descartes and to his radical distinction between extended and thinking substance. The question is well known: how can the immaterial mind act on the body and move it, and how can the body, in turn, act on the mind by causing its feelings and passions? While Descartes did not regard this as the source of any difficulties that might have necessitated the rejection of the distinction between substances or, inversely, of the theory of real causal interaction between mind and body, his readers and interpreters did. They constantly insisted on the inconsistency of his “interactionist dualism,” which is often invoked as a reason for discarding the theory of causal relation between mind and body in the classical period, and for replacing substance dualism with a physicalist ontology in the contemporary period. In this work, we return to the difficulties generated by Cartesian philosophy about the relationship between mind and body from three interrelated perspectives, which combine classical and contemporary receptions of Descartes: that of the first objectors to Descartes; that of his successors, with special consideration of their treatment of the difficulties involved in explaining mind-body interaction; and that of contemporary philosophers of mind, whose reflections on the mind-body problem are examined. Our approach to the philosophical issues thus brought to light allows us to revisit Descartes’s theses, and to propose a new evaluation of the doctrines on the basis of the psychophysical phenomena that they are capable of accounting for or not.

Postavení KLDR v současných mezinárodních vztazích (na základě determinujícího aspektu ideologie Čučche) / The Role of DPRK in the Field of Contemporary International Relations (on the Basis of the Aspect of Juche Ideology)

Žáková, Tereza January 2009 (has links)
The thesis introduces the Juche ideology and examines its impact on the North Korean regime. The main objective is to evaluate the role of the DPRK in the system of international relations, with regard to the Juche ideology. Due to the fact that in the DPRK and the mutual relations with other countries, it is very difficult to find a direct link with the ideas of proclaimed ideology, the main characteristics for a given pair of countries is emphasised. Mutual relations with five countries, which are articipating in the six-party talks with DPRK(the disarmament process is discussed in a separate section of thesis) are commented on. The role of the European Union is mentioned, because in the future, the EU could happen for several reasons, an important partner for the DPRK.

A Study of Selected Pedagogical Aspects of Two Intercultural Pieces for Late Intermediate and Early Advanced Students: "Variations sur un thème populaire coréen" by Sung-Ki Kim and "Six Pieces for Piano ‘Nori'" by Chung-Sock Kim

Choi, Yujin 12 1900 (has links)
I contend that young students should be introduced to intercultural contemporary music, as this exposure brings benefits to their artistic development and fosters appreciation of other cultures. Variations sur un thème populaire coréen by Sung-Ki Kim (b. 1954) and Six Pieces for Piano ‘Nori' by Chung-Sock Kim (b. 1940) are effective pedagogical works that fit perfectly into the intercultural mold mentioned above, and both are suitable for late intermediate or early advanced level students. A detailed comparison of these two works can help instructors understand the ways by which these composers incorporate Korean folk materials and blend them with Western contemporary techniques. An analysis of Sung-Ki Kim's Variations sur un theme populaire coréen and Chung-Sock Kim's Six Pieces for Piano ‘Nori' can be divided into three categories: harmony, rhythm, and performance-related aspects. By analyzing these two pieces, these study illustrates in greater depth their intercultural aspects, showing the way by which both composers merged traditional Korean folk idioms through the inclusion of traditional Korean rhythms, and the imitation of sounds of several traditional Korean instruments with Western contemporary technique such as non-traditional sounds and use of sostenuto pedal. Finally, this study provides some practicing suggestions and listing exercise on how to practice musical and technical challenges.

Superveniens och dess plats inom anomal monism : En analys av debatten mellan Donald Davidson och Jaegwon Kim / Supervenience and its place within Anomalous Monism : An analysis of the debate between Donald Davidson and Jaegwon Kim

Beckman, Emma January 2006 (has links)
This paper analyses the debate between Donald Davidson and Jaegwon Kim concerning Davidsons idea of the supervenience of the mental upon the physical. This thought is part of Davidson's general theory of the relation between mind and body; anomalous monism. The author asks wherther Kim is right that mental supervenience is insufficient to gurantee the mental causal power. The paper analyses the standpoints of both philosophers, especially regarding their definitions of "supervenience" and argues that Kim, to some extent, can be said to have misunderstood Davidson's notion of supervenience. Kim has offered definitons of "weak" and "strong" supervenience and interpreted Davidsons supervenience as being of the kind last mentioned. The author takes a standpoint opposite of Kim's and argues that Davidson's notion of supervenience is better understood as weak supervenience, but at the same time notes that it is by no means obvious that Davidsons supervenience can be said to belong to either of these categories since these refer to "possible worlds", which Davidson refuses to accept.

Traditional Korean Music in Contemporary Context: A Performance Guide to Gideon Gee Bum Kim's Kangkangsullae

Lee, Hyejin 05 1900 (has links)
Gideon Gee Bum Kim is an internationally-acclaimed contemporary Korean-Canadian composer. Kim has utilized traditional Korean music with Western composition techniques in some of his works. Kim created his own style by incorporating traditional Korean musical elements such as the scale, rhythmic diversity, syncopation, variation, ornamentation, and the progression of melody into a body of music that is otherwise contemporary and Western. The purpose of this study is to develop a performance guide for Gideon Gee Bum Kim's Kangkangsullae for string trio. Kangkangsullae trio is based on Korean historical, cultural and musical influences. I give a detailed historical and cultural background for this work and demonstrate how Kim integrated Western compositional techniques with traditional Korean music. My emphasis is on defining specific characteristics of traditional Korean music which will provide several points toward understanding Kim's compositional style.

The United States’ Enemy Image against North Korea during the Presidency of Donald J. Trump : Decision-Making at the Elite-Level

Schillström, Felicia January 2020 (has links)
The United States' enemy image of North Korea has been on its political agenda since the Korean war. Weapons of mass destruction has, since the Cold War, shown the complexity it brings on conflictual interests and decision-makers persuading efforts. Enemy image, per se, brings difficulties in achieving cooperation, substantially when both parties contempt high levels of enmity. However, the newly established U.S.-DPRK relationship brings hope for cooperative possibilities regarding denuclearization on the Korean peninsula. The relationship between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un is not based on trust, instead, it is dependent on the concrete steps taken by the other. The enemy image of North Korea has been settled on the U.S. political agenda firmly because of the principles regarding denuclearization and security. The enemy image is also an important factor to consider when examining political agendas, since the changing dynamics are dependent on how state A interpret state B and vice versa. What has articulated the dynamics of the U.S. enemy image against North Korea? and how has its enemy image changed? To answer the question at issue, a theory consumption of Eriksson and Noreen’s explanatory model is necessary. Which consists of context-dependent external and informal factors that will contribute different but coherent hypotheses.

Poésie et visuel : domaines américain et européen : Myung Mi Kim, Susan Howe et Anne-Marie Albiach / The visual use of the page in American and European poetry : Myung Mi Kim, Susan Howe and Anne-Marie Albiach

Dick, Jennifer Kay 04 June 2009 (has links)
This dissertation explores the diverse ways in which the work of Anne-Marie Albiach, Myung Mi Kim and Susan Howe visually organise the space of the page. The use of poetry’s visual dimension enlarges the traditional possibilities of the Word: to depict, multiply and produce an echo which is simultaneously resonant and visual. Exploiting the gaze also creates paradoxes through the juxtaposition of various elements. All of this calls into question the status of language, and poetic language in particular. This dissertation studies the ways these poets engage their readers as they produce a plurality of meanings which extend far beyond traditional sense-making. These works have significations which need to be seen rather than understood, via a reading process of its multifarious components [iconographic, linguistic, abstract, in series]. This study’s point of departure is the consideration of various types of fragments which illustrate how the fragment’s visual subtlety is intimately linked to each poet’s development. Connections between word and image are closely examined in order to locate the antecedents for the procedures being applied to the page. These works use “iconographic” techniques much as Apollinaire did in his calligrammes, while associating with these Mallarmé’s methods of drawing a poem’s reading out over numerous pages. The poetries of Howe, Albiach and Kim present a synesthesia of correspondences between all the forms which had heretofore been used separately. Consequently, these works radicalize the notion of what is possible in poetry by assimilating advertising, pop culture, collage and montage techniques.

A White Orphan’s Educational Path in British India : A Postcolonial Perspective on Rudyard Kipling’s Novel Kim

Uhlén, Karin January 2016 (has links)
In this essay Rudyard Kipling’s novel Kim (1901) is dealt with from a postcolonial perspective, and the aim is to show how three father figures - Colonel Creighton, Mahbub Ali and the lama - individually influence Kim’s education. Furthermore, how their point of view on education and parenting can be used to understand the larger concepts of postcolonialism and the pedagogy of Empire. This essay will argue that Kipling provides three different approaches to education that each can be considered the most suitable for a white orphan in British India during the late nineteenth century. Colonel Creighton is the personification of the imperial mindset, an authoritarian leader who strongly believes in institutions such as schools. Whereas Mahbub Ali, the wild horse from beyond the border and a servant of the Great Game, advocates freedom and a non-institutionalised form of education. Last but not least, the Buddhist lama from Tibet wishes to make Kim his chela and teach him the Wheel of Life. Reading Kipling’s novel Kim helps us to create an awareness of how the world order has changed during the decades and also gives us the opportunity to look at our present time in different lights.

Political Personality and Foreign Policy Behavior : A Case Study of Kim Jong-Il and North Korea’s Negotiating Behavior Regarding the Nuclear Issue

Kim, Chung-Hwan January 2006 (has links)
<p>The aim of this paper is to analyze the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il’s personality and its influence on North Korea’s negotiating behavior regarding the nuclear issue. Through the theory of social identity shaping and personality disorder, this study has generated a hypothesis by the operationalization of the theoretical framework. By using these analytical methods the following conclusions have been drawn:</p><p>Kim Jong-Il had experienced a sense of loss and damaged self-esteem in his childhood. He had tried to compensate for these feelings through the film industry (which served as an ideological tool) in order to regain his father’s affection, and he succeeded in becoming recognized for his political ability. However, he overcompensated for these feelings of low self-esteem by removing his potential political enemies. The experiences made him acquire an idiosyncratic character and personality disorder. This study has found that North Korea’s nuclear negotiations with the United States since 1993 have reflected Kim Jong-Il’s personality.</p><p>The model of the study can be used as a basis for further academic studies in the practical exploration of the correlations between a country’s foreign policy and its leader’s personality.</p>

What Is America Reading?: The Phenomena of Book Clubs and Literary Awards in Contemporary America

Winget, Lindsay January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Judith Wilt / Experience as an English major, a bookseller, a publishing intern, and a reader has formed questions in my mind about why people read what they do. My interest is focused in two particular "categories" of literature that vie for readers' attention: book clubs and literary awards. Because my skills are in literary interpretation and not societal or industrial analysis, I explored this supposed dichotomy by reading and comparing books from each category. In the "book club" books (My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards), I found a remarkable familial structure at the core: a daughter with a medical condition; a mother struggling to cope emotionally; a father who distances himself through work and offers profound symbolism via a hobby; an older brother who rebels; an outside couple, professionally involved in the action and romantically involved in each other. The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction-winning books, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, stretch farther with voice, style, and imagery. I found them intellectually and personally more satisfying. In addition pursuing academic interests, I also grew to better understand the variety of purposes for which we read. Though I concluded that if all four novels were to be labeled, they should simply be named "middlebrow," I came to appreciate different writers' strengths — research, personal experience, mastery of language — even when they do not match my personal criteria as a reader. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College.
